  1. Yes, but if Suppan is still the better pitcher, salary is irrelevant. I doubt Suppan is the better pitcher, but that's debatable. I think Parra has much better stuff and his biggest problem is mental, which is fixable. Suppan's biggest problem is his ability, which is not. Also consider this though. After this season, Suppan is gone whereas Parra is not. Parra is younger, more talented, cheaper, and under our control for a few more seasons. I think Rick Peterson will make a big difference with him this season. Parra was also mishandled last season. Melvin and Macha expected him to walk in and be our second best pitcher and he had a lot of pressure on him. If he fails again this year, my opinion on him will change, but he deserves another shot. Suppan is getting progressively worse and his salary should have no bearing whatsoever on whether he is in the rotation. If he is one of the top 5, fine, but don't give him a spot because he makes $12.5 million. My opinion on Lofgren is the same. If we was one of the best 12 pitchers, then let him stay. Instead Melvin over-signed for the bullpen and Lofgren never even had a chance to make the roster.
  2. I'll be fine if he doesn't win a job in the rotation to start the year and he obviously was overpaid but the constant over the top comments about how bad he has been as a Brewer can be a bit much at times. You're right my post was a little exaggerated due to frustration. I get upset when they give up on a young lefty pitcher with some upside, no matter how little upside it is, because they choose to keep Suppan for salary reasons. Suppan was one of the worst starting pitchers in baseball last season. He's in Milwaukee one more season. He's going to get his money no matter what. We can't do anything about that. But if we released him and used Lofgren as the long guy, at least until he proves to be such a handicap that he needs to be replaced, we could have one more young pitcher with some upside in the organization. He'd be making the league minimum so it's not like you're going to paying a huge amount of money for him. Give him a shot. Why not?
  3. Yeah I was kind of disappointed that even with Weeks' injury last season Irabarren wasn't given a chance. He had some really good seasons in the minors. The Lofgren thing I don't really get. They used a Rule 5 pick on him but he wasn't given a chance either. Yeah it would be hard to hide him in the pen, but not that hard. We had Elmer Dessens on the roster a few years ago for Pete's sake. Lofgren could easily have been the long man or a second situational lefty. Jeff Suppan is going to suck up a roster spot and get shelled just like he has the past 3 seasons, all as he is raking in $12.5 million, and Lofgren, who at least could have an upside, is offered back to Cleveland. Why not just put Suppan on waivers and either have him pitch in Nashville until we need him or let him walk? Just because we made the mistake of vastly over paying him doesn't mean we need to keep making the mistake of letting him ruin our team. I haven't seen Lofgren pitch one inning, but I think I would rather see him make a spot start than Suppan.
  4. There are only so many plots you can go through. The only thing left to do that would surprise anyone is to have Jack die.
  5. There are major rumors going on that this is the last season for 24 because Fox is going to cancel it.
  6. Hopefully Brett Bennett doesn't see the ice anymore this season. The Badgers dominated AA before and can hopefully do it again. I'm really excited about this team. They can play with anyone. I think anything short of the Frozen Four is a disappointment.
  7. What a joke. They'll consider anything but what the actual solution is, and that's a salary cap. Having teams switch divisions every year based on a payroll is a joke. Why don't they make a salary cap and a salary floor and the competitive balance thing will fix itself. Fix the draft so that the worst teams are able to sign the best prospects, and institute a salary cap and there is the solution. Why doesn't Bud Selig grow a pair and take on the union that he has allowed to become as strong as it is.
  8. Eh....I'd only make that deal if the Giant's paid some of Bumgarner's league minimum salary too http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  9. This may sound dumb but I think if Josh Butlet and Mike Jones can make big strides this year, and Manny Parra as well, it would go a long way towards resigning Prince Fielder. Here's my reasoning. After the 2010 season Jeff Suppan and his absurd salary finally come off the books. Dave Bush is making something like $5 million this year and isn't under contract past this year, and Doug Davis is making $4.25 million for this year with a mutual option next season. If those guys can be replaced by Jones and Butler, then the Brewers can let them all walk. That would be about $21 million coming off the books with 2 players making minimum salary replacing them....in other words a HUGE savings. This would also involve Manny Parra being able to hold down the #3 spot, which would mean a 2011 rotation of Gallardo, Wolf, Parra, Jones, and Butler. I realize it's an incredible reach, but both Jones and Butler made huge strides last year and if they do the same this year it's not out of the question. Obviously there would be some depth that would need to be signed. Capuano and maybe Narveson may still be options as well. But if you let $21 million come off the books and not have to replace it with a FA pitcher you are paying $6 or $7 million a year, you're talking $15-$20 million dollars available just by replacing three guys. That doesn't even include the Hall and Riske contracts which is another $10 million or so. Plus it would be one year closer for all the other pitching prospects to hopefully develop. I think its possible to have enough money available to resign Fielder, but a lot of pieces are going to have to fall in place.
  10. Can we name 5 starters? I can think of Sheets and Gallardo off the top of my head, but I hadn't followed the Brewers til about '97. Who else is there? Cal Eldred?
  11. And 99.99999% of people making $10 / hour would wet themselves if offered a job that paid $20 / hour. It's supply and demand. Very few people can play major league level baseball and millions of people will pay to watch it. Your comparing apples and oranges here. You're talking about someone who could be set for life 100 times over (literally) vs someone who could switch from buying Magic Stars to buying Lucky Charms. If Prince Field really wanted to stay in Milwaukee, he would. Look at Joe Mauer.
  12. Additionally, guys like Prince and Braun pack the seats and sell a lot of jerseys. There's financial advantage to having him. I think winning sells more tickets though. I would love to resign him, but I don't want to lose any financial flexibility in the process. We still have no real pitching prospects even close (I think Jones and Butler are the only guys you could even think about competing for the rotation in 2011, and they seem to be #4 or #5 starters at best) and last season showed that with no pitching it doesn't really matter it Fielder is here or not. If our prospects don't pan out, and you're paying Fielder $19 million a year, you're not going to be able to sign a real high level free agent pitcher and will continue to end up with the Jeff Suppan/Braden Looper/Doug Davis type signings. I'd be willing to give Fielder more years (6-7) if he signs for a little less money ($16-$18 million). I just don't trust him and his agent will do so. It's really funny if you think about it. 99.999999% of Americans would wet themselves if they were offered a contract that pays you $102 million to play baseball in Milwaukee for 6 years. Yet pro athletes.....nope....I want more. Sheesh.
  13. The shadows are pretty realistic for a day game. I just played a day game at Miller Park (The Show). While the shadows are a pretty cool feature, I thought the shadows were way too dark. When the pitcher was in the shadow, you couldn't even see his face. It was kind of annoying.
  14. I agree, H&T. I actually like the direction in which he seems to have that organization heading... well, technically *dislike*, since they're a division rival & all. I didn't realize he's only been there two years. My fault. It's too bad baseball teams can't trade picks. He could have traded down probably 20 spots and still gotten Tony Sanchez.
  15. I would have thought Neil Huntington would be last. They've had a lot of veterans lately that could have been traded for high level prospects (Jason Bay namely, Adam Laroche, Jack Wilson, I thought they had some decent relievers too), but it just seems like he never gets anyone really good. His drafts have been pitiful save Pedro Alvarez. He wasn't responsible for that Aramis Ramirez trade was he?
  16. Thats kind of weird, but good news.
  17. No, but trading Prince Fielder for three 20-year-olds isn't going to get the Brewers to 95 wins. The odds of them reaching that number are much greater with him knocking in 130 runs for us. We havent had 95 wins in any season Fielder has been with us. We need to improve in several areas, namely pitching. Signing Prince to a huge contract, while solidifying the offense, really gives Melvin no room for error in any other moves. The pitching prospects on the way are still questionable, so even though guys like Gamel, Escobar, McGehee, Lucroy and Lawrie will be cheap for a number of years, this team is going nowhere without pitching. If guys like Arnett, Anundsen, Rivas, Odorizzi, and so on don't work out, this team is going to be a .500 team with no money available to sign a pitcher.
  18. Melvin has done an okay job, I think, but not worthy of #6. I think he got off to a great start with the Sexson trade and has been average everr since. He has been utterly unable to acquire any pitching, other than the obvious Sabathia deal. He made a terrible deal with Suppan, obviously, and the year after Bill Hall had his break out year, he changed positions. Not sure how much that had to do with Hall's struggles, but it probably didn't help. The homegrown players he built the team around, the Fielders, Brauns, Weeks, Harts, Gallardos.....was it really him who brought them in or was it more Jack Z? I think he got fleeced in the Carlos Lee deal. While Cordero did an amazing job in Milwaukee, you don't trade an all star outfielder for a reliever, no matter how good the reliever is. The Doug Davis trade was bad. Also, a lot of the prospects he traded for, like Zach Jackson, Jorge De La Rosa, and Jose Capellan, turned out to be huge busts. Carlos Gomez is a huge gamble that he is very heavily relying on as there really is no alternative. I also think the Ken Macha hiring was a bad move. He's done okay with what he's been given, and certainly found some gems like Scott Podsednik and Casey McGehee, and even scored a big winner by trading Podsednik for Lee, but overall I think #6 is too high.
  19. Is anyone following this at all? Predictions? In D1 Hamilton, Racine Park and Madison Memorial appear to me to be the teams to beat. I thought Milwaukee Washington was a sleeper, but apparently two of their best players just got suspended for going after the referees after their last game. Look out for Milwaukee King too. Anyone here have any thoughts on the tournament, boys or girls?
  20. I know ATT gives you free wireless internet, not sure if TWC does or not. If you like watching Marquette games, as well as some HS basketball games, TWC has its own little sports channel that shows a lot of those games. Equipment wise, I think ATT is better. I honestly think its a horse a piece. I was all happy when I moved into an area where ATT was available because I thought I could save a bunch of money, but I don't. I don't switch to Time Warner mainly because of the free wireless internet and I don't want to go through the hassle of switching.
  21. How are they not going to televise either of the Minnesota games this weekend? What a joke. I have this FSN alternate channel where I get to watch Minnesota play just about everyone, but when it comes to Wisconsin not only will FSN not televise it (thanks again Milwaukee Bucks), but the Big 10 channel would rather show women's college basketball. I have really, really had issues with FSN's television schedule for Wisconsin hockey this season.
  22. I just hope the Brewers don't wait too long to decide what to do. If they don't have him signed by the 2011 trade deadline, he needs to go. I'd prefer to see him traded after this season or even the 2010 trade deadline if he isn't signed because we'd get more in return. What I don't want to see happen is for them to hold onto him until his contract expires thinking they'll make him a good offer only to see his demands are ridiculous and he walks away for nothing.
  23. It seems like every season has just an obnoxious, nothing to do with anything story line that takes away from the good part. Like Wayne Palmer and Julia from awhile ago, and pretty much everything with Sherry Palmer. I'm hoping this thing with Dana is over now that that one dude is dead and her ex is shot. They'd better not try to have her ex be some good guy now after all that he's done.
  24. Because he isn't a RFer and the Brewers would be looking for a Sheets replacement. Are you referring to Sheets injury? His injury came later along. Didn't Melvin really want to make the deal when he did because of all the extra starts he got out of Sabathia? He may not have been willing to give up what Cleveland was asking for if it was a month later. And even more so if his second best pitcher was still pitching.
  25. Why do you think that? He had switched to rightfield. Why would they have switched his position if they didn't plan on ever having him play in Milwaukee? I think its more likely that Corey Hart would have been traded.
