  1. I would LOVE to get Bumgarner, but I don't think Gamel would get him. I think you'd probably have to throw in either another prospect or make it about more than those two. Say Gamel and Hardy for Bumgarner and J. Sanchez.
  2. That's true, but i think the immediate need, which is also a long term need, is starting pitching. I just can't imagine McGehee bringing back anything more than a #4 or #5 pitcher, which we don't need. Trading Gamel could very easily bring in the type of pitcher this team really needs, and we have a young cheap hitter who plays better defense and is still capable of 20 home runs to replace him. Finding power in the free agent market is also easier than finding starting pitching. I don't like the idea of trading Gamel, but I really think its something that needs to be considered.
  3. Matt Cain has one more year plus a club option for 2011 at a very reasonable price. Perhaps if we got him we could extend him through 2013 or something.
  4. I know this won't be a popular idea amongst most of us, but I really think the Brewers need to consider trading Mat Gamel for pitching this off season. The time is right. Milwaukee found a possible gem in Casey McGehee and he can play 3rd base full time. If he doesn't work out, Taylor Green isn't too far behind. If for whatever reason Gamel doesn't meet his potential, we're going to miss out on a possible huge return. This team is still good enough to win, but they need some pieces, mainly a #1 or #2 pitcher and a more consistent offense. McGehee can help with the offensive consistency, and Gamel can help bring in a pitcher. I don't think Hart and/or Hardy has enough value to bring in anyone significant. The Giants need offense and have pitching. I've read Sandoval can slide over to first base, making room for Gamel. Perhaps theres a way we could bring a Matt Cain over here next season. I haven't really thought out who we could get in return, but it would have to be someone with more than a year left on their contract. Hart can stay another year as we really have no replacement for him, and perhaps Macha or a new manager will let him run more. Hardy can also be flipped for pitching if need be or even included in the SF deal to bring back a pitching prospect as well. Thoughts?
  5. Its really sad to see the season turn out this way. Escobar needs to play every day. So does Gamel. Craig Counsel is having a terrific season, but really, what is the point of him starting? I just wish there was a way to get Irabarren and McGehee in every day too. You have to see what Irabarren can do and McGehee is a very promising young player, exactly the kind this team needs to plug in around Braun and Fielder. This is going to be a VERY interesting off season.
  6. It's either clearly wrong or gross hyperbole to say there is no competitive balance. There are certainly improvements that should be made, but teams that fail do so because of poor management, not because they don't have the ability to compete within the system. Poor management certainly part of it, but how you can say the Yankees and Red Sox don't have an advantage over the Pirates and Royals then you aren't thinking straight. The Yankees can overcome poor management MUCH easier and quicker than the Pirates can because they can afford to buy off their mistakes, something most teams don't have the luxury of doing. Also, if teams are passing on the best players in the draft because they won't be able to sign them, is that poor management, or is it the system? I've said it before and I'll say it again. When 2/3 of the teams in the league don't even have a chance to sign someone like CC Sabathia, how can you claim there is competitive balance?
  7. What about Kopps? I think those are the best in the city.
  8. perhaps a way around a "cap" is to provide much stiffer penalties over a certain amount, but lower the amount so that only the Yankees don't have to pay it. Also, set penalties for payrolls under a certain number. Increase revenue sharing, and for pete's sake....fix the draft! World wide draft, strict rookie slotting or caps.
  9. When was the last time the Packers signed a highly touted free agent? That's hardly the point. First off, they have just as much opportunity to sign top tier free agents as anyone else. Just because their GM chooses not to does not mean they cant. The Brewers, on the other hand, like 2/3 of the rest of the MLB teams, did not have a chance to sign CC Sabathia. The Bengal, Lions, Browns, all those teams you mention...they've been bad for a while, for numerous reasons....poor coaching, poor drafting, off field issues, etc. The NFL needs 22 players to start, almost 3x that of MLB. You can't spend all your money on one or two big money players and expect that to turn around an 0-16 team. Second, just off the top of my head i assume Green Bay is the smallest market in all of professional sports, yet since they signed Reggie White a number of years ago, they've been a playoff regular. There is no possible way if Green Bay had MLB instead of NFL that would happen. That team wouldn't last in Green Bay more than 5 years, if that. And Badger made a good point. Its not like Green Bay, WI is glamor city USA. I live in MILWAUKEE and i think Green Bay is boring.
  10. There will never be true competitive balance until one of two things happen. 1) Set up a world wide draft and some sort of maximum rookie salary or slotting system that allows the worst teams to not only draft but sign at a reasonable price the best players 2) A salary cap for the 40 man roster. People who say we have competitive balance say "oh well last season the Brewers and Rays made the playoffs and the Yankees didn't". So what? It was first time ever the Rays made it, and the first time in a quarter of a century the Brewers made. The Yankees merely took a year off. They went and signed pretty much the only reason the Brewers did make the playoffs, and look at what its done to both clubs. When, realistically, only a third of the leagues teams have a shot at signing the top tier players, I don't see how anyone can claim we have true competitive balance. The NFL, now that is true competitive balance.
  11. If push came to shove, I would rather the Brewers just retain Gerut for CF as opposed to giving up something to get Morgan... even though his first name is spelled with a "y" http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif You cannot be serious. Gerut has been atrocious this year! You're really willing to play him full time for an entire year? Nyger Morgan would be a perfect fit for this team. I'd trade a prospect or two to get him. Lorenzo Cain can just as easily replace Hart in right field as he can play center. Plus, he's really struggling in AA. What if he doesn't pan out? He's one of our only decent outfield prospects, and the only one above A ball.
  12. I'd let Salome and Rivera battle it out. We need all the money we have to improve the pitching staff and sign a centerfielder to replace Cameron.
  13. The solution seems pretty simple. The Brewers should trade Hart and Hardy for pitching. Then they can put Gamel in Right Field and McGehee at 3rd. That's exactly what I was going to say. The only option I could see if trading Hardy and Weeks, playing Gamel at third, McGehee at second, and Escobar at short.
  14. We don't need another left handed outfielder, what with Jody Gerut tearing it up and all.
  15. I dont really agree with this line of thinking. Jones and Butler both are having very good seasons. Why ruin that by having them get shellacked in their final start? Let them finish the season on a high note, and give them a chance in the spring time to impress.
  16. Here's to hoping for another year next year in the Milwaukee system. Start him in Nashville and see what happens.
  17. I realize we have to keep resigning him, but I don't see the point in bringing him up to Milwaukee yet. Its not like he's going to be the savior to the pitching staff. Sign him for another year, start him and Nashville, and who knows, maybe at this point next year he'll be starting games in Milwaukee.
  18. The cupboard may be bare now, especially at the upper levels of the system. But I think there is a good crop of pitchers at the lower levels that have some promise. Arnett, Odorizzi, Anundson, Peralta, Scarpetta as starters, plus Braddock and Wooten in the pen. Throw in wild cards such as Rogers, Jeffress, and Jones. Obviously only time will tell, but I feel better now than I did 2 years ago. Impending trades of Hardy and Fielder and possibly Hart in the next few years, and that should help bring in some upper level prospects. The key to all of this, in my opinion is resigning Gallardo and Parra to long term deals.
  19. Ok shes pretty desperate to get rid of it, so if anyone is willing to buy it for at least $60 I'll throw in free tickets to TWO of the listed brewer games (they are all terrace reserve tickets). I don't care what you do with the thing, you can try to resell it for a profit if you want, but you have to come get it. I can help you load it. Thanks guys. 20. I definitely agree with the cheap youth. All season long I've been going back and forth about what to do with Fielder and Hardy. After watching the offense all year being so inconsistent, its become obvious to me that a) you need to keep your consistent performers i.e. Fielder. and fix your inconsistencies (OBP). I also think though you cant switch a players position every 3 years, so when Taylor Green comes up the year after next, I'd prefer to have Gamel in the outfield already. We have some very big contracts coming off the books soon and if we can avoid hefty raises to Hart, Hardy, and Weeks, that money could go a long way to finding some decent pitching.
  21. I realize this may be a little early but this off season something is going to have to be done with the infield. I won't include first base in the discussion since its Prince, but for three spots we have Hall, Hardy, Weeks, McGehee, Escobar, Gamel, Heether, and Irabarren. That's not even including Counsell whom I sure would resign in Milwaukee if offered a contract. Irabarren and Hall surely won't be in consideration for starting spots, but I hate just to give up on Irabarren. Same with Heether. Obviously a move or two has to be made, but what? I think no matter what happens, Hall needs to go. I realize that you'd have to eat his salary if he cut him, but its worth it. You allow Adam Heether to take that role. I think if he doesn't get a chance, Heether is leaving. No way do you let Heether walk without a chance so you can keep letting Bill Hall swing and miss until his contract runs out. Counsell, unfortunately, you can't bring back because theres no room. Maybe trade Hart and Hardy for pitching, which frees up shortstop for Escobar. Now what I'd like to see done then is move Gamel to the outfield and play McGehee full time at third. Weeks is at second with Heether and Irabarren playing backup roles. Any ideas for something else?
  22. If we lose him, even if its not for 2 years, we create an enormous hole in the lineup. Looking at the minors, we don't have a player in the entire system the can replace. Probably the guy with the best chance in my opinion, Mat Gamel, has never even played first base. We have the pieces in the minors (Escobar, Green, Cain, Salome, Lucroy, Gillespie, Lawrie, Irabarren, Heether, Gindl) to replace our more expensive positional players like Hall, Kendall, Weeks, Hart and Hardy. We can afford to sign a Fielder without leaving every other position with a scrub. I agree with southpaw, don't make him just a token "see I told you we'd make him an offer" offer. Go out and get it done. We can afford to lose Hardy and Hart. We can't afford to lose Fielder.
  23. I still say I'd rather just see them hold onto him for the next two years, try to re-sign him, and assuming he goes elsewhere, take the draft picks. I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but why on earth would you take the picks? Haven't the last two drafts turned you off to that? I had always been for trading Fielder, but now I officially change my mind. We have positional players that can fill almost every position within 3 years, meaning we won't have to pony up for the likes of Hart, Hardy, or Weeks. Braun is signed long term for a very reasonable salary. I'd give Prince what he wants. Braun and Fielder in this lineup for the next 6 or 7 years can turn into the next Yount/Molitor. Within 3 years you surround them with guys like Gamel, Escobar, McGehee, Cain, Gillespie, Salome, Lucroy, Green, and Lawrie (all for very cheap) Bullpen wise you have help on the way in the form of Wooten, Braddock, and maybe even Mike Jones or Roque Mercedes. Over the next two seasons you lose a ton in salary from Suppan, Hall, Cameron, Hoffman, Kendall, and Looper. Money wise, and future wise, I think it makes sense to offer Fielder a long term deal at maybe $15-$16 million a year.
  24. I'd rather go with him at under $2 million than Pierre. Has Jody Gerut even gotten a hit in Milwaukee yet? He is absolutely worthless. Perhaps there is a trade we can explore in the off season for one of the multitude of infielders we'll have. Personally I'd love to acquire a young centerfield prospect because Cain can just as easily move to a corner spot. That would allow us to trade Corey Hart.
  25. I am NOT the one selling this, my friend is, but i told her i would post the link for her on here. The $100 I am pretty sure isn't set in stone. I'm sure if you make a reasonable offer she'll accept it. Thanks http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/hsh/1268556755.html
