  1. If Melvin doesn't sign someone I am going to be very disappointed. Last offseason he did next to nothing to improve the rotation, settling on Braden Looper. If he thinks replacing Looper with Wolf is going to all of a sudden make us a contender he is crazy. They allowed Cameron and Kendall to leave and traded Hardy all to save money. I realize there were some raisies, but c'mon. Wolf, Counsell, and Zaun and all of a sudden we don't have any money left? He signed a reliever in Hawkins, when, in no offense to Hawkins, we didn't really need him because we already have a crowded bullpen. If he allows this team to enter 2010 with Jeff Suppan as the #5 starter I am going to be extremely disappointed with him, for the second year in a row. I don't care if its Garland, Washburn, Sheets, or Davis. All of them are better options than Suppan and would give us more depth. Just do something!
  2. Yeah from what I've seen Heether can play pretty much all of the infield spots, though I believe third and second are his two main positions? Is that right? Irabarren is mainly a second basemen and can play some outfield, though I don't know how well. I actually think they could fit well with Counsell. You have Counsell who can backup shortstop whenever, Heether can play first and third when he needs to, Irabarren can cover second base and in an emergency play in the outfield. The real problems would occur if Counsell/Escobar got hurt or if an outfielder got hurt, but in that case they can always sign someone for an emergency role. They'll definitely have third base and second base covered well, though. Plus it'd be very beneficial financially. With Irabarren on the roster they'd have a TON of speed between him, Weeks, Gomez, Escobar, and even Hart and Braun. If Macha ever figures out how to use it they could a pitchers nightmare.
  3. I would like to see both Heether and Irabarren make the roster. Unfortunately both are mainly infielders. I don't know if Irabarren can play the outfield well enough to be the "5th" outfielder, but I'd just hate to give up on him without really seeing what he can do. I thought he may have gotten a chance when Weeks got hurt last season but obviously he didn't. Heether also deserves a chance and I am glad the Brewers added him to the roster.
  4. ugh...if only I wanted to pay $109 a month to ATT to get that channel.
  5. I didnt want to start a new thread for this, but does anyone know if the USA-Canada championship game from the Juniors tournament is on tv tonight? I know its on in Canada, but anything around here?
  6. Do you have any interest in a Suppan bobble for trade?
  7. Yale is actually a pretty good team, so a win is a win. It seems like they have been doing this a lot lately in their tournament. There is a big layoff between games and then a lot of their best player are playing in the Juniors. I'm kinda sad that the tournament isn't happening anymore. Back when I was in HS the tournament was in Milwaukee and the teams that had coming in some years, like Boston University, made for a darn exciting tournament. I wish the Badgers would play in Milwaukee more, but now that they have that new facility there's really no reason too. Anyway, these next two series against Denver and CC are super important so hopefully they can pick up their play.
  8. I'd love to see the Brewers take a flier on Bedard or Sheets if they'll be ready for opening day. If not, I wouldn't mind David or Garland if the price is right. Infield wise they shouldn't spend on dime. The starters are set in McGehee, Escobar, Weeks, and Fielder. Depth wise Counsell is back and they SHOULD give the other spot to either Heether (my preference) or Irrabarren (also could be used as an outfielder). Outfield we have Braun, Gomez Gerut and Hart. I'd like to see Gamel playing LF in Nashville. They'll probably need to sign someone, although as a 5th outfielder I doubt it will a high profile signing. They're taking a huge chance on Gomez and if he doesn't pan out they'll be in trouble. Really other than a 5th outfielder type and maybe another starter, I don't see them signing or trading for anyone else.
  9. Not sure why this is relevant. Why is Loopers wins even mentioned? Wins has zero value, it just tells you really how lucky they are. I think it IS relevant and here is my reasoning. When looking how the team compares to last years team, I was looking at who we lost and who we gained. Regardless of bad Looper pitched, he was the winning pitcher in 14 games meaning somehow the Brewers managed to win when he was pitching. Whether it was luck or for some odd reason the bats came alive more when he was pitching...whatever. The bottom line is he won 14 times. If Wolf comes in and posts a 2.16 ERA in 30 starts, but the Brewers lose 25 of the 30 games, can you really argue his addition improved the team? I'm not so sure because even though he pitched a lot better than the alternative, then team had less success. So really when I was comparing the loss of Looper to addition of Wolf, I am wondering if Wolf will match the production of Looper, which I think should include wins because regardless of how he got them, he still got them. I'd take 14 wins and a 5.00 ERA over 7 wins and a 2.5 ERA. I know in reality I should have looked at the Brewers record in all the games he started because its probably more relevant than win-loss record, but I didnt really have time to find that.
  10. Looking at what the Brewers have done so far, does anyone here think we've improved enough to be playoff contenders in 2010? Looking at their moves CF: Gomez for Cameron. Probably a downgrade on both ends, but saved a lot of money SS: Escobar for Hardy: Offensively they are different type players. If Macha lets Escobar steal some bases his value should be higher, but he won't hit the HR or drive in runs like Hardy can. C: Zaun and ? for Kendall: I sure hope the ? isn't Lucroy as I dont think having him jump of from AA to play only part time is a good idea. However, I have a hard time seeing how anyone could be a downgrade offensively from Kendall SP: Wolf for Looper: Although Wolf is definitely better, Looper did lead the team in wins last season. The bullpen is probably going to be better as well with Hawkins and Vargas and maybe Riske. I'm not sure they have the money to make any other major moves, and unless they plan on trading Gamel or Lawrie, which I'm starting to hope they don't, I don't see any other major upgrades. So this is the team. Do we think it's going to be a playoff contender? My money says no but I suppose you never know. Gallardo and Parra need to improve and the bullpen needs to pitch to its potential. Escobar and Gomez, in my opinion, are going to be key players because if they struggle I don't really see any replacements for them.
  11. I was pretty ticked off that they didn't televise the college hockey showcase games as well. The lack of Badger games on FSN too is irritating, but I'm assuming it has to be a result of the Bucks games ALWAYS being on. I don't know what the TV schedule looks like coming up, but two of the Badgers' biggest series of the year are coming up after the Showdown and if they don't televise the games I am not going to be happy.
  12. If they are going to do something, they'd better do it soon. The more guys come off the list I think the more expensive it will cost to get someone like Sheets or Bedard. I think DM and Mark A. need to open up the wallet and spend a little more than they intended to this year because Prince is likely gone after this season and it may be a bit of rebuilding after this season.
  13. Maybe if they fail in their attempts to sign Jason Bay. Their offense was terrible last season. If the offer was right, I don't see why the wouldn't trade him. Obviously it would take more than Gamel, but I'd be willing to part with more than Gamel to get a young pitcher with as much upside as him. We don't have any pitching prospects even close to where he is at so acquiring him would be a huge boost to our staff. I'm sure it may just be a pipe dream, but you never know.
  14. I realize that prospect for prospect trades are rare, but wouldn't a trade involving Bumgarner and Mat Gamel make perfect sense for both teams? The Giants are pretty set in pitching but need help on offense. The Brewers offense is strong but they lack pitching. I doubt Gamel alone would get Bumgarner, and since the Giants have Buster Posey I doubt they'd want Salome, but maybe we could throw in another low level pitcher like Rivas, Anundson or Rogers. Bumgarner could likely be a top of the line starter for years to come if he continues to progress, and one make a dynamite 1-2 punch with Gallardo. I'd like to see DM ask about his availability.
  15. I think Melvin made a mistake by signing Hawkins. It's not that he isn't a good pitcher. But with how much Melvin has been talking about payroll, it seems weird he spent what, $7 million on a reliever that they really don't need. With Hoffman, Vargas, and Coffey, you've already got a solid back end of the bullpen. Stetter is your lefty. You have a long man which SHOULD be Suppan (with Narveson taking his spot in the rotation and Jones, Butler, and possibly Capuano available as backup options). Carlos Villanueva is an option. David Riske will be an option. You also have Lofgren whom I really hope they hang onto. He can be a second long man or a second lefty and after this season can move back to starting in the minors, similar to how Matt Ford was used. So that right there is already 8 arms, assuming Riske is ready to go. I just don't see the need to spend money on a multi year contract like Melvin did with Hawkins. Doesn't make sense to me.
  16. If we trade Hart who is going to play RF? Why trade for an "Ok" pitcher who most likely won't be anything more than a #5 or a reliever?
  17. Texas and Boston seem like good matches, but right now I would ask look at Boston. They're apparently going pretty hard after Gonzalez but SD is asking too much. I don't know what they are asking, but maybe the Brewers could make something work. I think we all can agree that Prince isn't going to re-sign with Milwaukee. I don't really want to trade him now that we picked up a decent arm in Wolf, but if we can get Bucholz, a cheap, talented young pitcher, and Anderson, someone to replace Fielder, plus maybe another arm, that would help the team for years. Same with Texas and Smoak plus pitching.
  18. I know this means absolutely nothing, but my brother in law told me his friend saw Ben Sheets at Mitchell International last week. Is anyone here able to verify if he was indeed in Milwaukee and, if so, why?
  19. I think with Weeks' injury history and Hart's history of being crappy, he would be a great pickup.
  20. I favor moving Gamel to the outfield, but I'd like him to get some time there in the minors before we just throw him out there. I don't really see why we'd want John Maine. His numbers are less than impressive and you'd have to take the money you saved by trading Hart and use it to find a replacement (or give the job to someone who has never played the outfield before). John Maine would be a guy I wouldn't have a problem signing if the money was right, but I wouldnt give up anything more than a mid to low ceiling prospect to get him. No way would I trade a major league regular for him.
  21. I was never overwhelmed by Randy Wolf but he is probably the best we are going to do free agent wise. I hope this isn't where Melvin stops, though, as I would love to see one more option, preferably on a one year deal. Money wise, this isn't the killer the Suppan is. We dumped a lot in salary this offseason and will do so again next offseason with Riske, Hall, Suppan, and possibly Hoffman and Fielder coming off the books as well. Overall, I won't be standing in line to get my playoff tickets quite yet but its certianly a good start.
  22. With how dominant he has shown he can be and how terrible this organization has been at producing starting pitchers, I think you have to try him as a starter first. He has shown what he can do as a reliever and he can always be moved back if things don't work out. I say put him in Huntsville as a starter and restrict his pitch count for the year, just to make sure he is healthy. If he's going to be in the bullpen, I don't see why he should have to go back to Huntsville after the numbers he put up there last season.
  23. I know a lot of jobs don't necessarily care what you're degree is in just that you have one. You can be a cop, for instance.
  24. This has got to be one of the most inconsistent teams I've ever seen. How many times already have they won Friday night and lost Saturday night? A 3-2 loss tonight to Michigan and now they are 8-5-1. With the experience and all the super talented defensemen, they should be better than this.
  25. I don't know if he's considered a legitimate prospect anymore, but Mike Jones should be at AAA next season too. He struggled there last season but remember he started the season in Brevard County and really got pushed quickly, so I expect he should do better.
