  1. Welcome to the Ronnie Gideon era.
  2. Maybe, but I doubt it. I won't lose one bit of sleep over it either way. It was a trade at the margins of the roster.
  3. Not really. He just doesn't have the stuff to get through a lineup three times.
  4. I'm more Gallardo/Weeks/Hart on that group than I am Braun/Sheets/Fielder. I feel like this was the pitcher that Nelson was supposed to be so I buy him and I buy Santana as a guy that was a touted prospect. Shaw may be a bit over his head but he did show some ability last year. I wouldn't rush to call any of them "franchise cornerstones" but I think all could be solid contributors on a winning team. That my be what we end up with here is a team built of a bunch of really good ballplayers but no real superstars. Which would be the opposite of the '11 team which had a few superstars but some black holes as well. EDIT: I'd add Arcia and Brinson to that list as well.
  5. Come on. Oakland doesn't even consider that for a second. I don't think it's too far off. maybe something like Broxton, Jungmann, Ray and Diplan.
  6. Sure glad that Quintana guy is mediocre.
  7. That does make a bit more sense to me. Using someone like Davies would keep the pitching prospects home. Davies, Ray, Lara, and Medeiros would be a good package, IMO. This is also where I think the Garrett Cooper trade bites us where it hurts. I think a Davies-Jesus Aguilar combo would have meant the Crew might be able to get away with tossing in just one of Ray/Lara/Orimoloye/Harrison. I'd still think about offering Davies and Aguilar, but now, the question becomes who spells Thames against tough lefties? Cooper was ready, now... Cordell? Braun to first? I disagree, i think Jesus is a very capable platoon guy with thames who clearly needs ddays off pretty regularly. Cooper is unknown at the MLB level and is imo at best a .800 ops guy but more likely .750 Why are we dinking around with this? Suter straight up and call it a day!
  8. If all these guys are garbage, why would the A's do this deal? If the A's wouldn't do this deal, why propose it?
  9. So Tebow had a .648 OPS in a ball but still got promoted. Why do you think that is?
  10. I was under the impression that he was a more of a right handed finesse pitcher.
  11. Brown was injured early in the season - thus the gap from April 6th to May 11th and only 2-inning stints May 11th and 16th, and thus why he was "awful". Excluding those first three outings, his ERA has been 3.00. He's been pretty darn good even with those outings. For a guy who was pegged as almost certainly moving to the pen almost immediately, he has done very well.
  12. For all the talk of moving Hader to the rotation, the freight train at the back end of the bullpen looked awfully good tonight.
  13. I probably can't find the tweet but it was from one of the regular Brewers minor league tweeters that mentioned the velo uptick was something he was hearing in the last few weeks, and seemed like it might've been due to an adjustment he had made at AA. I might be wrong though, there's been a lot of talk about him making adjustments throughout the season. Honestly though, if he's making adjustments and seeing any sort of increase in consistency/velocity, then with these results his realistic ceiling is only going up. Oh I agree and I'm not disputing your info, just giving my personal expereince. What your saying about an adjustment sounds vaguely familiar. If that is correct and he is throwing mid 90's, with his already described as "eliete" curveball and average change, then he has to be on the cusp when it comes to these lists. I don't put much stock in these prospect lists as they seem arbitrary and reactionary when it comes to moving players up and down. However, when we get reports of something changing in the players skill set, then that makes a difference in my mind.
  14. I've seen Burnes pitch a couple times when he was at A+. The second time the gun in the stadium was showing velo that high but I talked to a scout who was clocking pitches and said the gun (EDIT: at the stadium) was 3/4 MPH high.
  15. So Tebow had a .648 OPS in a ball but still got promoted. Why do you think that is?
  16. I never said their MiLB numbers were comparable. And I probably should've said Coopers ceiling was Overbay rather than a direct comp. But both have been good contact, high OBP, doubles hitters. Poor athleticism limits them to 1B, but decent glove. They even look similar. Rogers is a decent comp for numbers sake, but not much else. It's amazing how much stock is put into a stat line with zero context. I'll stay away from the personal attacks and snark except to say that my whole post was about context. If Rogers is a good comp for numbers sake, and we are specifically talking about numbers, how is that irrelevant? In either case Overbay was a significantly better hitter than Cooper at every single level without the benefit of CS. To say that Overbay is the ceiling for Cooper is giving Cooper more credit than he has earned.
  17. You can chop up the numbers however you like but I don't how you look at his splits and conclude anything other than that he has greatly benefited from playing half his games in CS. I don't care how old he was when he was drafted. He is going to be 27 going into next season. Honestly, I don't think his career arch is all that different than a Jason Rogers. Go look at Overbay's minor league numbers, its just not even close.
  18. It's amazing how much stock is put into a stat line with zero context. If this exact trade happened a year ago would anyone have these same sentiments toward Cooper?
  19. I doubt Hader is being shopped and I doubt he is moving to the rotation. This just allows Hader to pitch more multi-inning games and still have a lefty. If they wanted him to start they could have easily done that and used Suter in the same role.
  20. I would bet real money that at least Jimenez will/would be up before 2020, maybe even next year. I don't think those four players would net you Jimenez in a trade much less Quintana. In no way are those four players the equivalent of what the Cubs gave up.
  21. They probably just want another lefty in the pen.
  22. His ERA may be marginally higher in Biloxi but everything else says he has been BETTER in Biloxi than he was in A+. If he keeps it up I don't see any way he stays out of the top 100.
  23. I agree on the minor league guys. I would add Florentino to that group as well as Rodriguez and L. Ernesto singed this latest period. Plus you have folks like Sibrian, Piniero, Mallen, Yerald Martinez, Salaman, Chirino and Jay Feliciano aleady stateside. If you look at it, the org is absolutely dotted with kids out of the DSL program. The ramp up started under Melvin but Sterns has taken it to a new level.
  24. Both get on base at a good clip, Reed maybe a little better at it. Reed never showed the power that Stokes is flashing this year. It was always promised, but never delivered.
  25. This is a great post. It has a lot to do with the availability of information as well. There are a lot of folks that think they can read a basic stat line and form a definitive, informed opinion of that player based on a comparison to some arbitrarily picked player and/or player group. Maybe it's a product of our fast food drive through, instant gratification society that we NEED to know how a prospect will pan out long before that event ever happens. Too many fans just cannot enjoy the ride and HAVE to from an instant opinion and then spend inordinate amounts of time trying to justify that opinion with some misguided sense that they can predict the future. They do this while dismissing any context at all and fomenting at those who dare to look at any evaluations of that player beyond their anointed basic stat line. There is a reason every single team employs actual, in person scouts and that is because it matters. Stats aren't everything.
