  1. I hope he does well and makes this very difficult for the front office. But in 2016, Villar had an OPS of .826 playing most of the time at short. They didn't need to call him up when they did with the underwhelming numbers at Colorado Springs. Today, yeah, he's hot this month, but can he make it stick? I dunno. But if Ryan Cordell can add 150-200 more points... maybe it's time to think about making a switch. I don't think there is anything remotely difficult about this for the front office. Arcia is, and will continue to be, the starting SS for quite some time. The kid is 22 for cripes sake. Cordell is 25 and hasn't made it out of the minors yet. I'm not even sure Cordell can put up the lofty offensive numbers you keep touting. He's only got a .670 OPS outside of Colorado Spings. His OPS last year in AA was .803 (Arcia @ .800) and only .771 (Arcia .738) the year before while splitting time between high A and AA. There are some awfully big assumptions being thrown out there on both sides of the ball with regard to Cordell's ability.
  2. Maybe I'm missing it but I don't see George Iskenderian on any roster either.
  3. I'll go back to that they know they aren't signing a bunch of those high school picks in the middle rounds.
  4. Lemons, Beam, Lipscomb and Robledo unaccounted for.
  5. It appears Joaquin De La Cruz and Wilfred Salaman have been brought stateside as each now appear on the AZL roster.
  6. Nathan Kirby says hello. Actually, after reading up I'm not sure how Thornburg or Kirby are relevant. Kirby had a lat strain that caused him to miss his last college season. The Brewers found the UCL injury upon his draft exam and slashed his bonus because of it. He then had TJS almost immediately (pitched a few innings). While rehabbing that surgery this spring he encountered a less serious issue that required a surgery that will probably keep him out until late in the year at best. Don't know how that relates to Hiura at all. Thornburg actually had the same PRP injection that Hiura had a completely recovered from it and went on to pitch effectively enough to bring back a significant trade package. Here is an expert from an article on Thornburg after the trade. "So the decision was made to shut Thornburg down for a full three months after the PRP injection. Luckily for Thornburg and the Brewers, that move worked and the former third-round draft choice was back throwing in mid-November." His issues now are due to thoracic outlet syndrome which is a shoulder injury, not an elbow injury. Again, that seems to make the case for what Hiura did and not having surgery as opposed to having an unnecessary surgery.
  7. Nathan Kirby says hello. I don't recall the Brewers coming out and saying the injury was healed with either Thornburg or Kriby. In both cases I'd bet the player had a significant say in whether they rehabbed or had surgery. Neither Thornburg or Kirby are position players. Neither I, or anyone else on this board, has reviewed the medicals of the players involved to determine how similar or dis-similar the injuries were between the three players. Having any surgery is risky and having a procedure "just to check" is a horrible idea. There is a growing opinion that surgery is not the answer. I'm not worried in the least.
  8. This notion that the Brewers brass randomly drafted this kid without being VERY informed as to his medical situation seems very strange to me. Likewise, the idea that the Brewers brass are a bunch of bumbling idiots that, after acquiring even more medical information, are just going to throw him on the field to play despite an obvious need for surgery is equally strange. They looked at the medicals and re-examined the kid after the draft. If they say the elbow is good, then the elbow is good. Even so, they are not taking that for granted. They have clearly stated that he is going to start with a throwing program in Maryvale before going on. Unless one is a M.D. AND one has reviewed the medicals, then one has nothing more than conjecture to conclude future issues.
  9. Who goes from the outfield? I would think Phillips will go when Braun comes back by why would any other move need to be made in order for Brinson to play? I don't think Broxton has done enough to block anyone.
  10. That was my take but thank you for confirming it.
  11. Brewers Area Scout Scott Nichols -- "Kind of frustrating when a kid begs you to give him a chance and then changes his mind !!!" You would know better than I but is that sort of thing common. I would think a high schooler being confused/undecided would be common. Then again, for a scout to publicly call out that high schooler would seem to indicate either bad form by the scout or that this situation is not all that common.
  12. I think Hiura and Lutz are the dominoes that need to fall as opposed to Harrison and Hairston.
  13. Well, between the lower 20 draft picks and the UDFA signings they will certainly have enough organizational filler. I wish we'd hear more on the earlier draft picks but I'm getting the sense we won't see too many of those guys sign.
  14. Is it me or should we have heard about more signings by now.
  15. Maybe more guys are injured than we know of? Or maybe they are planning on cutting loose a larger number than usual?
  16. This x100. However, if they are in the same position at the deadline as they are now, I think they would have a hard time explaining to the casual fan as to why they sat on their hands if those internal options don't pan out. So yeah, churn through the internal options and then see what you can get for some mid to lower level prospects I guess.
  17. You'd have a hard time convincing me that anyone currently in the system would belong in the same conversation as Braun, Fielder, or Weeks as prospects. Those guys were blue chip players. I know Ray was a tip five pick but not all draft classes are created equal. I think you missed my point. The lists aren't there for comparison, they are there for contrast. The point is the recent 1st round picks aren't similar to the Braun/Fielder/Weeks group. And of course there are exceptions for late bloomers (Lucroy). I have no doubt (and quite a few hopes) that we have a several late bloomers in the current crop of players. But still no one (maybe Brinson) categorizes as a no doubt MLB player. My mistake and I do agree with your premise. Having said that, I don't think Lucroy was a late bloomer, he always had potential. It just took some time for that potential to develop. He was just a different class of prospect than a Fielder or Braun. I believe we have several prospects that fit into that category and that class of prospect sometimes has struggles and take time to develop. Doesn't we mean they won't become very good players and even all-stars. If you (and this is not directed at anyone in particular) are disappointed that a non-blue chip player is not performing at a blue chip level, that is a you (again, no one in particular here) problem. Which is what this whole thing has been about, expectations.
  18. Nelson Cruz was mixed into that group, I believe he had sub .750 OPS in A ball too. Mookie Betts, Jonathan Lucroy are couple of other names that had sub .800 OPS numbers at some point and they turned out to be all stars. My guess is if you really looked, you'd find a whole bunch more.
  19. You'd have a hard time convincing me that anyone currently in the system would belong in the same conversation as Braun, Fielder, or Weeks as prospects. Those guys were blue chip players. I know Ray was a tip five pick but not all draft classes are created equal.
  20. Do I remember from spring training that they had an unusually high number of kids that didn't get assigned to full season ball, or am I wrong on that? It also looks like they have five or six kids up from the DSL squad plus signings like Saint and Castaneda. Frankly, it doesn't seem like they have a ton of room for a full draft class even if they let a few folks go. I think the number of high school picks is a direct reflection of that. They don't need a ton of guys knocking on the doors of the full season rosters right now.
  21. I'd really like to see them get Workman signed in addition to that group. It will be interesting to see how those higher picks come out with regard to the bonuses.
  22. I think Weeks was close to a can't miss prospect when he was drafted. And I think after a year or two in the minors Braun and Fielder we both considered can't miss type prospects as well. Pitching is another matter. I don't recall ever having a can't miss pitching prospect in our system. I was really hoping we'd add an elite level talent this year in the draft but I don't get that sense with Hiura. Only time will tell of course but I'm really concerned about his defensive issues. He'll definitely need to hit his way into elite status. Right, I was speaking more to the post Braun draft era. Specifically, no one in the system currently.
  23. A college sophomore and another JC guy to start the last rounds. The run on senior signs is still not materializing.
  24. And I don't think anyone is arguing that point. I'll be the first to tell you we don't have can't miss talent in the system. I don't recall any payer drafted in recent memory to be considered a can't miss prospect either. We have drafted some guys that were projected to be very good, but I don't recall any of them being labeled as a sure fire perennial all star. So the question then becomes, if we don't have that talent level, whey are we disappointed we don't see that level of production?
  25. And the run ends in the 20th round, but even that looks like a JC pick so still staying younger than senior signs.
