  1. Interesting read in the Shepherd. Pretty much what I remembered. I still don't believe it was a poor decision not knowing that Molly would go on to have great seasons afterwards. Bando was a poor GM and made bad trades and horrific drafts. How much of that was on him and how much he was hamstrung by ownership we will never really know. That era of baseball was just nearly impossible for small market teams. I was a huge fan in all of those years. Living in Milwaukee, I went to probably 30+ games each year from '87-'92. I would buy the cheapest seat and pay the $4 parking fee and drink with my buds in the parking lot. I was one of the reasons that the payroll was tiny. Think this was true of much of the fan base. There were very few season ticket holders and no premium seating really in County Stadium. Often you would have more people sitting upstairs than in the lower grandstand when the price difference was like $3. Nowadays people pay far more.
  2. That would be pretty amazing. Losing the Chicago market yesterday...then drop NY today...with Boston, Houston, LA falling within a week??? The ratings would be pretty miserable I'm sure, but would still be phenomenal games with the Braves youth and an incredible story in the A's and the Indians and Brewers trying to end crazy long title droughts. I too am rooting for the Indians to reach the WS. Just really like that club and wish they would have won in '16. Plus it might trigger some renewed interest in a great movie...
  3. Posted this in another thread, AL West went 114-51 against the AL Central. Each team there feasted upon those teams for 32-34 games vs the 20 that the NL Central teams did. There is really no way to know if those magnificent AL records of the Astros, RedSox, Yankees, and A's are a measure of how great those teams are or if the dregs of Baltimore, KC, ChiSox, and Tigers simply inflated those numbers. Yes the Marlins were horrible, and the Padres also we're pretty bad, but the rest of the NL generally had competitive clubs. Even those 2 were no where near as pathetic as the O's or Royals. This is another reason I doubt the Braves and Indians. Braves were 22 over vs their division and -4 vs everyone else. Cleveland was +22 and -2. That being said, none of that means anything in a 7 game series where you only need 4 starters. Who gets the best pitching and timely hits will win.
  4. I am right with your 25 adambr2. My only question is Davies. If they decide they want to start Peralta or Woodruff, I could see him being dropped for either Broxton or Thames. With off days for travel, not sure they need 12 pitchers. Assume you get a lead in 1 of the first 2 games. That game you go with your normal Knebel, Hader 2 innings & Jeffress for the ninth. If that is game 1, sure Josh is out for game 2, but I'm pretty confident in Burnes or Soria in late innings and JJ ought to be up for a 2nd 1 inning appearance. By game 3, you are hopefully up 2-0 or if things didn't go your way in 1 or 2, it's tied 1-1 but you have a decently rested pen again. Only reason that Thames might make it is you know when they start a righty that we likely have Granderson, Shaw, Moustakas, and Yelich in the lineup. It is nice to have 1 lefty bat on the bench to toss in for Kratz/Pina late if they have burnt through all of their lefty relievers.
  5. His contract with Toronto was 3yrs 12.175 million. I have no idea what the Brewers offered, but it doesn't matter. They decided to move on from a guy that was 36 and played only DH. That is not a dumb decision in any way other than the fact that Molly went on to have a great end of his career. If the Brewers decided to offer that type of deal to Braun (if his deal was up this off-season) this board would blow up. Again the issue was not in letting him go but that they need to replenish the organization for losing his services. You can't afford to have HOF type players play their entire career in a small market more than one at a time. We should have traded Molitor and we should have traded Prince. I remember when we could have had Bumgarner, man that would have been sweet.
  6. I don't want to get into a huge argument about this, but he was a 36yr-old DH. The issue wasn't that they didn't retain him, but that you didn't get anything in return. Probably should have dealt him in '91 for some real prospects and the early 90's would have been far better. Of course, he went on to have 5 more excellent seasons. Not sure any of you think Braun will do the same...
  7. After starting the season 1-8 vs the Cubs, the Crew went 8-3 the rest of the way. That includes 4-2 in Wrigley.
  8. Game 1 is Thursday. Whomever starts that game will likely be the game 5 starter if needed. Can't be Chacin and likely not Gio either. Does it change depending on Cubs/Rockies? Right now it would appear: Miley Gio offday Chacin ??? offday Miley Then theoretically you could start Chacin on normal rest in game 1 of NLCS. (Normal rest would also be game 5 and game 1 of WS). The more I think about it, the biggest decision is who or how they approach the 4 SP spot. Is that Davies? Guerra? Or do they go with Peralta/Woodruff and rely on the pen? I might go with Guerra, but Peralta might be the surprise choice.
  9. Just want to send a shout out to 2 Cardinals... Mikolas for his spectacular start on Saturday and whoever that pinch runner was for tripping over 3rd base last Thursday. Thank you!!!
  10. Updating a month later: SP: Chacin, Miley, Gio RP: JJ, Hader, Knebel, Soria, Cedeno, Burnes, Peralta, Woodruff, lefty (Jennings?) C: Kratz, Pina 1B: Aguilar Infielders: Shaw, Moustakis, Arcia, Schoop, Perez Outfielders: Yelich, Cain, Braun, Granderson, Santana???
  11. Gio gets the start. Would guess that Peralta is next in line. Woodruff? The good news is that Counsell can see what's happening with the Cubs/Cards game and can adjust on the fly. If Cubs take a huge lead and Brewers are scuffling he can go to Lyles or someone else. If Cards have a lead, he can choose to go all out for the W. Is anyone going to watch football? Between the 4 baseball games involving Chicago, LA, Denver and Milwaukee that us a lot of viewers skewed towards the diamond.
  12. Let's go Giants. Didn't know this is Pudge Rodriguez kid starting...
  13. Selig did fine from '77-'92 IMO. Hard to hold the early years against him either. The problem was they didn't receive anything for 2 HOF players. Molly leaving via FA returned nothing to the organization. Yount was simply done at that point. As a small market it is very difficult to allow that level of player to exit and not gain something to offset the loss. By '92 it was clear that Milwaukee needed a new stadium or it would be impossible to compete. It took another what...7 years to get it passed and 10 to be built??? By that time, Bud was spending most of his time as commish trying to fix the problems in the entire game. Were there management mistakes? Of course, but given the disparity in payrolls during that '93-'03 period, even the best front office would have been hard- pressed to field a competitive team. Look at Pitt, KC, and others. It was the worst time in MLB history for balance.
  14. Yeah, don't want to take anything away from Boston as I do think they are really good. But here is their record: Baltimore 16-3 Toronto 15-4 Vs NL East 16-4 (Atl 5-1, Was 3-0, Phl 2-2, NYM 2-1, Mia 4-0) Texas 6-1 KansasCity 5-1 Vs other 10 AL teams 49-40 Just an example. If the Brewers finish with 2 wins vs Det, they will have gone 13-7 vs the AL Central. Every AL team plays 33 games vs those teams. A .650 win% translates to 21 or 22 wins. That would be 8 or 9 more wins instead of maybe 6 vs "normal" teams. So the Crew simply playing an AL slate would maybe go from 95 to 98 wins. Then how many of their games do they win vs Baltimore?
  15. The AL has 2 teams that are going to finish in middle ground. 7 teams are at +14 and 6 are at -14. Only Minnesota and the Angels are going to finish with a "average" season. That seems to be stranger than any other occurrence.
  16. Both 7 game series go 2-3-2?
  17. As of right now, the Dodgers are WC#2. They finish on the road @SF. Rockies have 1 more vs Phillies then home vs Nats. My guess is Rockies win 3 of 4, Dodgers sweep. That would force a 1 game playoff for the west. In this case, the Cards are out even if they sweep the Cubs. So much still very up in the air.
  18. Just a quick comparison of '82 and '18 using OPS+ & ERA+ Yount 166....Yelich 157 Cooper 142... Aguilar 136 Thomas 137...Cain 122 Molly 129.......Shaw 119 Ogilvie 118....Moustakis 107 Simmons 112...Braun 103 Sutton 116...Miley 177 Vuckovich 114...Chacin 113 Fingers 147...Jeffress 304 Slaton 116...Hader 178 ......................Burnes 159
  19. Listach was great but so was Hamilton in the 2 spot. Those two created so much havoc on the bases. '11 was a great full year, but Marcum and Wolf were toast in Sept. It was going to have to be outscore the opponent or get crazy good pitching out of the pen to win.
  20. Just curious for those if you who have endured being a Brewer fan for 40+ years... This team will not finish with the best overall record. It doesn't have any of the household names like Robin and Molly. They aren't Bambi's Bombers. On the other hand, this team is far better set up than our most recent playoff teams to enter with a real shot at the WS. I was just a 5 year old in '78 and 9 in '82. I don't recall those teams having a great pitching staff. I really like the weapons this team has with mainstays Cain, Yelich, Aguilar, Braun, Shaw and the valuable additions of Moustakis, Granderson, Santana make this a very potent group. The starters are not going to give you 7, but are generally pretty effective in getting through 4 and the relief corp has been amazing. I have more confidence in this team than any since '92. It is hard to compare to those late 70's-early 80's clubs, but might this be the best ever?
  21. Sorry, but I pretty much wrote this game off before it started. Just accept that some opposing pitchers are really good. My only hope was that Davies would somehow throw a gem and we'd squeak out a 1-0 or 2-1 win. Just get tomorrow's game and hope that the White Sox help us out.
  22. Ah, I figured it was a sacrifice of some sort, but thought that sac flies still counted as ABs. Didn't think of a squeeze play.
  23. Don't know why I spent time looking at that but what popped out to me... How did Lyles get an RBI in his only AB with a strike out? That and maybe we need to start an OF of Keon, Domingo, and Gio Gonzalez
  24. NL records since July 27th: StL 33-18 Atl 32-22 Mil 28-20 ChC 29-21 Col 28-23 LAD 27-23 Was 25-26 Pit 23-24 AZ 23-27 SF 20-29 Phl 20-30 This was a point where all 11 teams were at or above .500 and had a shot to make a run. Very few trades had been completed. Thought I'd check and see.
  25. I'm not arguing that the Crew should play more in April. Just that opening week. Then maybe a 6 game trip in division vs Cincy/Pitt followed by another homestand and finishing the month on the road when the weather should be better. Just makes sense to utilize those roofed stadia when it is most likely to be poor weather. Never going to be perfect obviously. The NL is tough as 8 teams are outdoors and in snow-endangered cities (not Atl, Miami, Mil, AZ, 3 in Cal). Have Sea, LAA, Oak, Hou, Tex, Tampa, Tor host in AL. You are at 14 games. Not sure about Wash, KC, or StL but those are probably better than the other spots.
