  1. Yet they are 23-21 against the top 3 NL teams (ChC, Mil, StL). Who knows why they struggled in those Diamondback and Dodger series? Maybe they faced Kershaw both series or they faced them with some of their key guys out. Maybe the Crew got the D-backs before Goldschmidt started hitting. Kind of weird to think about though. The Crew lost those 5 games against them when they were on fire. If they play them at a different point in the season maybe they go 3-2 instead and the Cubs lead is that much smaller. I love the 162 game season as it allows for teams to suffer down periods and recover, but it can be cruel too. Playing a struggling team only in May while your rival plays them in July can be pivotal.
  2. Just kind of interesting. Don't know when their games were or why they struggled so much. Given the other 110 games, they are equal. With the Crew dominating and the Pirates awful against those teams, they are completely out of the race and the Brewers are leading the WC.
  3. Just was looking at vs division standings. Crew us 21-10 vs NL West, Pirates are 12-21. If they had done what we have against that division, they would be ahead of us in the standings. Kind of crazy to think about.
  4. I'm always amazed at guys that toil in the minors for years without getting an opportunity. On the one hand, before 30, it has to be the best job you will ever have. At the same time, getting passed by younger guys and becoming a veteran minor leaguer that no organization is really pushing you has to be hard to take. Signing each year with a team that might offer a shot if things go badly (injuries). Add in that you can be traded in a minute and have to uproot your family...wow! I hope Kratz gets to enjoy a nice postseason run and can make some spectacular memories by getting a key hit or a phenomenal tag out at the plate.
  5. Current win % is .564. This is the 49th season for the franchise. Only 6 seasons had a better rate--'78, '79, '81, '82, '92, '11.
  6. All of you arguing for electronic strike zone... Are we talking about a full 3D zone? So often it seems to me that the point shown on TV or Gameday is where the ball hits the C mitt. Of it was in the zone at the front of the plate or just nipped the corner of a true 3D box, that is a strike. If they could use a chip inside the balls that worked in conjunction with a computer that adjusted the zone for tall and short hitters, I could go along. Been saying that for 1st downs in football for years. Just don't like the way people judge an ump based on where the pitch ends up.
  7. Ok. Right now this is our rotation... Today...Miley Wed...Chacin Off Fri....Chase Sat....Gio Sun...Davies That looks like Miley, Chacin, & Chase vs Cubs (Quintana, Hendricks, Lester) next week in Chicago.
  8. I think we found out the answer to this in the Nats series. I tend to agree. 1) This is the Cubs, not the Nats. 2) Having won game 1 and having game 2 in your favor and in jeopardy with a possibility at the sweep that close... I just think it is possible that Counsell asks for 6 pitches. He shouldn't need to. If I had any confidence in Jennings, I wouldn't even mention the thought. But he might get be thinking at that moment that he wants to save Soria for an inning plus on Wednesday. "I just need this out and we are home free having won #1 & #2 and we are just 3 games back with Chacin going for us."
  9. Obviously it is very likely that Hader will not pitch, but if the Crew has a lead and the Cubs get a situation where there are are men on and 2 out and a lefty batter up... Would you ask him to pitch to 1 guy?
  10. I like the way it is now. First, it rewards the #1 overall seed as they play a team that might have burned their best starter and quite possibly their bullpen playing the WC game. Secondly, basing it upon records is a bit silly. Each division plays roughly the same schedules as their divisional opponents, while comparing the Brewer's schedule to the Dodger's is a different animal. Simply the interleague is way easier this year. That could be a 5-6 game difference by itself. I do find the AL/NL split quite interesting. Teams like Tampa and Seattle might he having one of their best seasons in years and can't sniff the pennant chase. Is that because the top 7 are sitting clearly ahead of the bottom 8 (Cal, Tx, Tor, Bal, Mn, Det, KC, ChW). What will it mean for the WS?
  11. Colorado has 17 home games left (10R) while the Dodgers only have 9 (17R). You would think that would be huge in favor of the Rockies, but each of the NLWest teams are performing better on the road than at home.
  12. My post was 4 starters, either Gio or Zach in the spot depending on results. Do you go with 7 relievers and 6 bench bats? Can't imagine needing a 3rd lefty reliever, but if so then I guess Jennings is added. Is Thames our best available lefty bat at this point after Yelich, Moose, Shaw, & Granderson?
  13. This can't be overlooked. 90 wins is +18. So Crew needs a 14-12 record to get there. The other main contenders for the WC have 72 wins and would need 18 to get there. 18-10 is a very high win % for a team that is 10 over for the year. Yes, 14-12 might be hard for the Crew to achieve. Or some team amongst the Phillies, Rockies, or Dodgers could get white hot like the Cards have. As of the moment though, being at +16 is HUGE!!!
  14. vs RHP Yelich Cain Moose Aguilar Shaw Granderson Arcia Pina Bench--Perez, Kratz, Braun, Schoop, Broxton vs LHP Cain Yelich Braun Aguilar Schoop Perez Arcia Pina Bench--Shaw, Granderson, Moose, Kratz, Broxton I'm so down on Thames at this point. Not sure if having a lefty bench bat is worth it with him K'ing in 50%.
  15. C--Pina, Kratz 1B--Aguilar Infield--Moose, Shaw, Arcia, Perez, Schoop Outfield--Cain, Yelich, Braun, Granderson, Broxton? SP--Chacin, Chase, Miley, Gio/Davies RP--JJ, Hader, Soria, new WSox guy, Burnes, Barnes I think these 23 are pretty sure bets. Probably want one more hitter and one more pitcher. Does Thames get a spot? Knebel?
  16. I heard it during the game today that he was going to miss us. Sorry if I am incorrect.
  17. Next 9 games...3 @Wash no Scherzer, 3 vs Cubs no Lester, 3 vs SF. 6 home games, is 6-3 too much to ask? That would get the team to 18 over, high-water mark for the season. That would leave them with 9 home and 9 road games (@Cubs, @Cards, @Pitt, Pitt, Cin, Det). Think these next 9 are critical. 5-4 would be OK, but 6 or more would really look nice.
  18. At this point, despite it possibly being bad for the Crew, I want chaos. Have 3 or 4 teams tied for the last WC spot and multiple 1 game tiebreakers. Good news is that Brewers have some series wins that could allow them to play game 2 after the first 2 of 3 tied teams play the day before.
  19. 3 left @StL 3 @Pitt, 6 home 3 @Cin, 6 home 3 @Chi, 3 home 3 @Was 3 home vs SF 3 home vs Det That is 9 games against true playoff contenders. Try for 4-5, though with 6 on the road, I would expect 3-6. 15 vs .500 clubs. 3-3 on the road and 6-3 at home??? 12 vs reds and Detroit. 2-1 on road and 7-2 at home. That would give us 21-15 record and finish with 90 wins. If that is not enough, the other teams simply took off and you tip your cap.
  20. My personal take on this really depends on pitching. Considering the loss of Nelson, this year was going to be a struggle without finding another true bulldog to lead the staff. I didn't think any of the available options in FA were worth pursuing. I did have some hope that they could make a trade to bring in someone using Santana as the chip. You have to find a willing partner and I am sure Stearns tried but couldn't make it work. They did get Chacin and it appears that Miley might have been another good acquisition. Going forward, a lot depends on how Anderson and Nelson figure in. Do they go with Burnes and Peralta? What about Hader as a starter? Once they figure those internal possibilities out, do they need to look outside via trade or a FA this off-season? I do like where they stand for the most part with their regulars. C could use an upgrade and SS is somewhat troubling if Arcia doesn't progress. Bullpen is always something that changes yearly and you must continue to find guys. I like that they have several good minor league guys pushing their way onto the roster. Ray looks promising and Huira sure can hit. Need at least one of these pitchers to become a reliable #2 starter type and either Nelson or Anderson to regain last year's form and you really have something. What I have trouble with is those that want the team to make a big trade to "go for it". Doing so this year or last probably kills the progress and yields very little. Patience is needed and is hard to have. Injuries can completely derail any plan and the one to Nelson was brutal. Hope for the best and stay patient!
  21. Team is 8-20 vs Cubs, Pirates, & Dodgers. 55-29(.654) vs everyone else. Only 16 games left with Pirates and Cubs. 34 vs the others. If they can keep up the .654 pace, it would yield about 22 wins. That would get them to 85. Try to go at least 7-9 in those Pit/Chi games and you would get to 92.
  22. This article is from almost a month ago, but their situation looks even worse now: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.mlb.com/281228198-pirates-could-be-sellers-before-trade-deadline.amp.html Cervelli or Mercer?
  23. Guerra, Anderson, Chacin, Peralta gets us through the Miami series. Thursday starter is ??? Then Guerra again on Friday, followed by Anderson in 1 of 2 for the doubleheader on Saturday, and Chacin in finale before break. Does Peralta go down after the Wednesday start and return for game 4 after the break? That would give him 9 days off and let us stretch his innings limit further into the season. 2nd Saturday starter can't be the same guy as next Thursday, so I will assume a combo of Wilkerson and Woodruff get those. Lot of pressure on Guerra and Anderson to eat up innings in between. Next 9 games are big. Love to get 6 of them.
  24. That trade was made early on. At the point the trade was made, Sheets was dominating. My thought was that with those 2 aces, you could easily expect 3 wins in 4 playoff starts. Then you only needed 1 more win to advance. Then Sheets had his injury and all real hope for a postseason run was gone. CC made the run to get in fun, but I think most everyone knew that the inevitable was upon us. Great move. Unfortunate timing of Sheets injury.
  25. 14 vs Pitt 9 vs Cincy 8 vs Cubs 6 vs Cards 37 in division 27 vs those 4 NL teams 12 vs Det, Col, SD, Miami 76 + 51(W) + 35(L) = 162 So about evenly split between division games and the rest.
