    I would hope that Priester, if 100% healthy, is about as close to a rotation lock as you're going to get. We forget how great he was last season. Getting him back at 100% health would be a boon to the rotation. He wasn't doing it with smoke and mirrors last year. That stuff is legit.

    I was in the middle of coaching high school track, and was not very active on the board at that time. However, as I'm generally on the more optimistic (and in this case, realistic) side of the spectrum around here, I'll let you make an educated guess on what my prediction would have been. My lack of prediction doesn't change my perception of yours being outright hilarious ;)

    I don't know if it is necessarily fair to degrade Arnold on this trade. Not yet at least. As we've seen with the Burnes trade, especially when you are dealing for very young, inexperienced and untested talent, it sometimes takes a bit for these guys to find themselves. Of course, sometimes they never do. But it isn't like Sproat and Williams were two dart throws. Both were high draft picks and have Top 100 prospect pedigrees. Williams is only 22, and Sproat is 25. The Brewers could have targeted players who were further away from MLB contributions, but instead chose guys who they likely planned on making contributions this year. That put them more intensely under the microscope right away. And yes, the returns haven't been what we'd all hoped so far. But IMO we are a LONG way from being able to definitely call this trade a failure.

    Sproat is likely not in the game at all if it were closer. Probably would have seen Ashby in the 8th and Uribe in the 9th.

    Screw that! FanGraphs is a load of poppycock! And I don't buy the whole "our algorithms just don't work for the Brewers" excuse. You know what? When you're predictions underestimate the same team year after year, you change your prediction methods. But nah, FanGraphs probably already has the Brewers slated for 84 wins next year, and has them finishing 6 games behind the Cubs.

    For #6, we're going old school. Despite his failings as a GM, Sal Bando was a very effective 3B for a long time, including several seasons as a Brewer. And for #5, one of my favorite sluggers of all time, Geoff Jenkins.

    Yet another double-whammy of burly sluggers after last night's dramatic win! First, for #8, the man who became one of baseball's top sluggers AFTER his time with the Brewers, Dante Bichette! And for #7, we have the limited but fun Eric Thames!

    Despite today's crappy result, the Cubs getting blown out by the lowly Marlins brings our magic number down to #12. Jon Singleton is happy about it.

    I like Murphy. But his insistence on getting Hamilton in the starting lineup the majority of the time is simply mind boggling. Hamilton is a fringe bench player at absolute best.

    In picking up Senzatilla and Romero, the Brewers effectively took what was already a strength of their team, and made it perhaps bulletproof. Granted its been a small sample, but those two moves are looking very good. I still have hope for May to figure his crap out and provide meaningful, effective starts this month and into the postseason. His stuff and makeup is better than what we've seen the last couple outings, and having a veteran steading presence in the playoff rotation would be a very good development. The Cubs, on the other hand, only picked up Zeferjahn (who has been bad) to try to solve their biggest weakness, which was their pen.

    IF (and that is a huge IF) Woody does come back to pitch at all this season, my guess is that it would be for short stints out of the pen. There is no way that he'd be able to build up to a starter's workload in the time he has left.

    Winning 1 of the next 2 puts the Brewers in very good shape. Taking 2 essentially means sayonara for the Cubs' faint division hopes.

    David Hamilton is currently OPSing .646 vs. righties. Ortiz vs. righties is .729. Basically, the numbers don't support Hamilton EVER playing over Ortiz at this point.

    I think the issue is the Brewers are treating Ortiz like a Hernan Perez-level utility infielder, splitting his time between 3B and SS. When most agree that he should be the everyday 3B, and not taking starts from Pratt at SS. An Ortiz, Pratt, Turang, Vaughn/Bauers infield is the best arrangement, with Bunty planted firmly on the bench, not starting the majority of the games at 3B.
