  1. Also, I dig this move, especially on a one year deal. It takes all the pressure off of having to promote and depend on an inexperienced, unproven middle infielder in the midst of a pennant race, barring injury of course. I think there's a strong possibility that we don't see Hiura until rosters expand now.
  2. Who gets the DFA? I think Albers is gone. Nope ... you bring Albers in and see if he is the 2017 and early 2018 version. Easy move is Suter to the 60-day. I am 99.9% sure that will be the move they make.
  3. Yep. 12 months ago everyone thought the Brewers were set at 1B, as Eric Thames was coming off a 31 HR year. I imagine the leash isn't going to be super long with Aguilar after his down 2nd half. I'm surprised they haven't signed a Choi-type to take reps at 1B in AAA.
  4. This is interesting: If owners were going to collude, it is odd that they'd do it on someone like Mark Reynolds.
  5. Well, I'm looking at an .825 OPS last year, and an .863 in 2017. I'm looking at 32 bombs last year, and 31 in 2017. Those would very much put him in the All Star conversation as a 2B. He likely is never going to measure up perfectly defensively as a 2B, but he proved last year that he is not out of his league there. I do agree that Shaw and Moose have skillsets that are somewhat redundant. But this is a World Series-contending squad, and having Shaw in the lineup at 2B makes the lineup deeper than having the Spangenez platoon there. Having Perez as part of a platoon takes away his value as a jack-of-all-trades as well.
  6. But again ... who are you going to sign or trade for to play 2B that is going to provide more value there than Shaw? Personally, I think if Shaw ends up at 2B, there's a strong chance that he's your starting 2B in the 2019 All Star game. Very few current 2B are going to put up the numbers Shaw can from that position.
  7. Once Thames came back from injury, Aguilar had established himself, and the soft platoon was set. The only way Braun was going to see significant time at 1B was if Aguilar didn't make the team, and/or Domingo Santana established himself as someone worth starting every day in RF. Obviously neither of those things happened.
  8. OK, if that is your argument, what is the solution? Personally, I think that Moose is going to provide more to this lineup than a platoon of Perez and Spangenberg. Also, if Perez is playing in a platoon, it removes his value as a versatile jack-of-all-trades. I'm ok with Moose coming back. I'd be very happy with Marwin Gonzalez as well.
  9. If the choice here is either trying to get a good return for Thames, or putting out the lineup likely to win the most games for a team that has WS aspirations, then surely it's not even a close decision? Aguilar/Shaw/Thames puts the best offense in the lineup, no question about it. No black holes (other than the risk of Arcia replicating the first half of 2018) aside from the pitcher. cf: Cain rf: Yelich lf: Braun 2b: Shaw 3b: Aguilar c: Grandal 1b: Thames ss: Arcia Where is the weak link in that lineup? Defense. Defense is the weak link. And you are not going to admit it, but defense does matter.
  10. So once again, you are suggesting that Jesus plays 3B for at least the first month of the season? You must own a glue factory the way you beat dead horses around here... The thing is... if the Crew wants a good return for Thames, he has to be a very big run producer. That requires playing time. You can't really sit Shaw or Aguilar, they're also both good. So, how else to get all three in the lineup on a regular basis? You platoon Aguilar and Thames. That's it. Because what you are proposing I very much doubt will happen. This is a World Series-contending team. They have no business playing with the lineup, and putting out a horrible defense just to showcase guys for a potential deal.
  11. Well, considering literally no info on these guys is coming out from anywhere, I guess we gotta take what we can get. Wouldn't that be more reason to ignore what Michaels is saying? Like if he said it and then Rosenthal or even someone like Haudricourt picked up on that and heard it too, that would be one thing but Michaels said it and nobody has said anything else confirming it. So why would some MLB insider break this bit of news to Bill Michaels, who only talks about baseball when he can compare it to something in football? I don't deny that the guy is a doofus. The Brewers are a World Series contender coming off arguably the best season in their history, and the Bucks are arguably the best team in the NBA, yet the vast majority of his time is spent arguing about the Packers offseason plans. That said, I think he's too much of an idiot to make of a rumor that specific.
  12. MiLB ranks the Brewers' system at #15 just by position players: https://www.milb.com/milb/news/farm-system-rankings-position-players-20-11/c-303725806 I imagine they will rank lower pitching-wise, as several of the top guys have recently graduated. Big year for guys like Lemons, Jarvis and Ashby to pick up the slack there.
  13. Gotta love flyer signings. Gonna be tough to crack that bullpen off the bat, but if he pitches well in San Antonio, eventually an opportunity will open.
  14. "We have stupid money, but we're only going to blow it on our terms."
  15. I see the starting rotation in a much better spot (both talent-wise and depth wise) going into 2019 than 2018. Therefore, I think I'd take that bet.
  16. I have no doubt that the Brewers will go into some games this season with designed shorter starts, based on matchups and keeping pitch counts on select pitchers under control. I don't think its going to be any sort of regular practice, though. There's just no way they'd be able to sustain the staff all season with regular piggybacking. The five guys that they determine to be the best fits for the rotation will start, and the guys that were vying for those spots who don't get them will either head to the pen, San Antonio or to another team. That doesn't necessarily mean that the five most talented starter-types will be in the rotation. If the Brewers do anything to march to a different beat, its that they place more value on having effective pitching options ready for any scenario, whether that's the 1st, 4th, 7th or 9th inning, than other teams do. A lot of MLB teams throw their worst reliever or least talented starter type in a long relief role. The Brewers don't do that. That role is more important to them than it is to other teams.
  17. I'd say of the free agents remaining, these guys should have ML deals James Shields (borderline) Bryce Harper Manny Machado Adam Jones Ervin Santana Dallas Keuchel Craig Kimbrel Matt Wieters Denard Span Gio Gonzalez Carlos Gonzalez Ryan Madson Josh Harrison Evan Gattis Mike Moustakas Jose Iglesias Tony Sipp Carlos Gomez (borderline) Martin Maldonado Marwin Gonzalez Adam Warren Cameron Maybin (borderline) Derek Dietrich Clay Buchholz Edwin Jackson Still quite a bit of value out there. No doubt that some of these guys are going to end up signing minor league deals and provide solid value.
  18. How is it not obvious that by Counsell saying "It's going to look different", he is referring to the pitching structure looking different than it did in September and October? I take that to mean it's going to look more traditional as far as the rotation and bullpen roles go. I don't think there is really any other way that can be interpreted.
  19. I love the pitching depth, both in the rotation and the pen, that this team has amassed. You can never have enough solid pitching depth, and they provide high value, as there are always teams looking for pitching should the Brewers get to the end of Spring Training and have a hole at another place on the roster to fill.
  20. https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/free-agents/available/ You have to scroll down to get to the guys who are still available, but this is the best list I've found.
  21. I put it to bed months ago using last season as evidence. What I described (again) a dozen posts up is exactly how it's going to play out. Anybody seen True Blue Brew Crew anywhere on this subject matter.....WAIT AND SEE!!!! Yep, I think your post nailed the situation. In fact, that's why it still wouldn't surprise me to see them bring in Keuchel. Not only would that give them a lefty in the rotation, it would also provide length. I'm sure True Blue will eventually show up with some sort of post backtracking on his original thoughts, though, or instead calling us all out as not truly understanding the "revolution".
  22. “We have to remember that we’re going back to 25-man rosters, we’re going to have a game every day,” Counsell said. “What you saw in September and October, you won’t see. It’s going to look different. “We’ve got to get pitchers that are going to get a whole bunch of outs in a game. That’s the best way for us to be successful, to have guys at the start of the game get us a whole bunch of outs.” Can we put this piggybacking nonsense to bed now? Yes, Counsell operates with an early hook. That's just the way he manages. It's great having guys in the pen that can go multiple innings, but they are still going to want/expect long starts from their starters. The Brewers aren't reinventing the wheel.
  23. Well, considering literally no info on these guys is coming out from anywhere, I guess we gotta take what we can get.
  24. Brewers obviously were not impressed with Cedeno during his brief stint here, so they went with Claudio in that role instead. Will be interesting to see which of the two puts up better numbers this season.
  25. Would Bill Michaels actually know anything like that? I feel like he's throwing numbers out that make sense to him. He said "from what he's heard". Could be blowing smoke, but I could imagine he might have a legit source somewhere.
