  1. According to this list (https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/mlb-free-agent-tracker-latest-hot-stove-signings-ranking-50-best-players-available-for-2019/), 18 of the top 50 free agents remain unsigned. We may see Machado and Harper drag out into February, but I totally expect many of the guys lower on the list, including Miley, to come off within the next week or so. I predict Pollack will be the next big name to go, and maybe Keuchel this week as well. I think Moose signs somewhere this week. It is absolutely astonishing to me that Marwin Gonzalez remains unsigned. I thought he'd be one of the first off the board. Every team in MLB can use that versatility and solid bat. Perhaps he knows this too, and is asking for the moon.
  2. While not overly likely to happen, how much fun would it be to see Starlin absolutely mashing against the Cubs left-handed starters while in a Brewers uniform. My understanding was that Castro wanted to be traded form Miami. I always wondered if the Crew couldn't have taken Castro off Miami's hands - and maybe have kept one of Diaz or Harrison (say dealing the Marlins Dubon instead). I don't think the Brewers viewed 2B as a huge need last offseason. They had Sogard coming off a career year and were still seemingly very high on Villar's potential to rebound. Heck, they never gave Neil Walker a second thought after he was pretty valuable for them in 2017. I'd say 2B is much more of an obvious need this year than it was at this time last year. The last two seasons they've attempted to shore up 2B with an in-season trade (Walker in 2017 and Schoop last year). I'd like to see them avoid this scenario this year and actually have a solid option there from the get-go. If the Marlins would be willing to take a high contract or two, or eat some of Castro's deal, I wouldn't be opposed to picking him up. Hi skillset would be a nice fit for the lineup. I also don't think the Marlins would be reluctant to make another deal with the Brewers. I don't think GMs operate that way.
  3. It's actually a little disappointing that I don't stand a chance of even getting close to that level of cool. Thames may have his faults as a baseball player, but no one can deny that guy isn't winning at life. He looks totally at home pretty much doing anything besides playing RF and facing lefties.
  4. Really? Because I seem to remember a whole lot of people being real excited about the possibility of Machado coming over here in free agency. I think it's a lot easier to say you don't want Machado when there's virtually zero chance it's going to happen. I don't really like the guy....but I like an elite power hitting SS/3B. Yes, there were a lot of people excited by the idea of Machado at deadline time. Things change. Brewer fans have first-hand experience seeing how big of a douche he is now.
  5. That's because that's exactly what it says. ONE of Long or Stephenson may be going. Yeah, I read it wrong. My bad.
  6. The only cure is some juicy Derek Dietrich rumors ...
  7. Long, Stevenson and a sandwich pick for Gray? Wow, that seems like a lot. Brewer equivalent would probably be Payton Henry, Mauricio Dubon and someone like Caden Lemons. For one year of Gray? Yikes, that's rich.
  8. This Brewer team just doesn't have the type of strong leadership personalities that would keep a diva like Machado in his place. I think Counsell and Stearns are very cognizant of team chemistry and the importance it plays in success. Because of that, I think the chance of the Brewers signing Machado are about as close to 0% as you can get.
  9. I wouldn't say that Miley doesn't have big velocity. He was regularly sitting at 93-94 with his fastball, and was getting up up to 96 at times. For a lefty, that's great. His velocity was actually the big thing that surprised me about him last year. I hadn't thought he had that good of an arm. I agree, too, that Miley looked much better than Gio. Gio, while effective for the most part, did appear to always be on the verge of giving up a big inning. I'd be happy to see a Miley reunion. 91.8 which is about where he's always been. Maybe I'm remembering Spring Training then, because I remember seeing mid-90s, and being super surprised by it.
  10. That thought makes me shudder. If they were going to blow that kind of money, I'd rather it be on Harper. Machado is probably more gifted, and plays a more valuable position, but he's such a tool.
  11. You are assuming that the Yankees (or Reds) care in the least about an arbitrary prospect ranking. I mean, it is easy to determine what every team's top prospects are, but once you get past the first 5 or so, each team is going to have its own ranking system, and I wouldn't doubt that its different than the mlb or any other prospect ranking list that is available to fans. Really?!?! I never would have guessed. Sorry if that came across as snarky. I didn't intend it to. It just bothers me when the national talking heads take prospect rankings as gospel. It's typically how fans immediately decide whether a team "wins" a trade too. It just gets old is all. Sorry if you're offended.

  14. Me too. Kluber is an ace with multiple years of control. He's exactly the type of pitcher the Brewers should be pursuing. They would be so lucky to get him for that proposed offer.
  15. I think you hit the nail on the head with this comment. While I don't think there are payroll constraints, per se, the Brewers and and the term "stupid money" are never going to be in the same sentence. That's just not the way this team is going to operate with the leadership structure currently in place. That doesn't mean that they are going to let money stand in the way of acquiring a player who they view as an instant, substantial upgrade, though, as long as the value is justified. Obviously a player like Harper is an upgrade on what they are bound to have in the corner OF this year opposite Yelich, but the value isn't high enough to offset the $30 million+ per year it's likely to cost.
  16. I saw some scuttlebutt from Yankee fans that a trade of Gray, Kahnle and a mid-level prospect for Bumgarner was going to happen. That would make me sick. That's like the Brewers dealing Chase Anderson, Jacob Barnes and Olczak for Bumgarner. Yankee fans are equal parts pretentious and delusional.
  17. I'm just getting sick of the "he might be traded" scuttlebutt. Cashman needs to crap or get off the pot for heaven's sake. If any teams gives up an upper-end prospect for him, I'm gonna be mad.
  18. So much for the Yankees being conservative with their spending this offseason. Yes, they haven't bought Machado or Harper ... yet.
  19. I don't know. To me it seems like they simply replaced Hundley with a younger, more contractually-controllable version of Hundley. Maybe there is something there with Kizer that can be unlocked, but right now based on his time with the Browns and the albeit very small sample we saw of him in the preseason and regular season, he's an athletically gifted QB who looks like he's in way over his head in the mental part of the game. He's still very young, though, so that may improve. It didn't with Hundley, though.
  20. I agree with you. I like Moose coming back more than anything left on the 2B/3B market. That lineup would be murder on righties, but you'd need to hope that Perez/Braun/Aguilar can pick up the slack against tough lefties. It would also let them ease Hiura into the lineup, instead of tossing him in full time if/when he eventually comes up.
  21. I am so down for the reincarnation of 36-year old Willie Randolph. Give me this, please! I remember being really bummed when they didn't resign him for 1992. He was one of the few things that made watching that 1991 palatable. A lot of fans thought his strong start to the season was a fluke, but he just kept on hitting all the way through. Gumby, at age 39, split time at 2B with 33-year-old Scotty Fletcher in 1992, putting up underwhelming results.
  22. Hill had a terrific preseason, and there was a lot of talk at cutdown time that he'd likely be claimed if cut. He looked substantially better than Hundley and Callahan. I guess I should have prefaced my comment to say that McCarthy didn't see value in hanging onto a 27-year-old rookie on the active roster as his developmental QB. I know that hindsignt is 20/20, but given the dearth of solid backup QB talent in the NFL, that was a clear, clear miss.
  23. Just like last year when he said he expected Nelson to contribute to the 2018 team I know that every athlete heals differently, and it was a very serious shoulder injury, but you'd think the medical staff could give more of a concrete determination than "maybe ... maybe not".
  24. The Brewers got the #73 pick instead of #25 because Teixeira had a higher Elias rating at the time. That's the #25 pick the Angels ended up using on Trout. Brewers got Max Walla at #73
  25. I thought they offered Sheets a Qualifying Offer, and he didn't end up signing with anyone until mid-way through the next season, disqualifying the Brewers from getting a pick. I could be misremembering.
