  1. Shaw wouldn't be my first choice to fill the 2B hole, but I suppose if the contract were affordable enough, they could make it work. It would make that lineup murder against righties, but I would worry about facing tough lefties.
  2. I agree. Hate it. Just saying "initial out-getter" sounds stupid. You're right ... it is synonymous with "starting pitcher". Of course, I hate the idea of piggybacking starters too, but that's another argument.
  3. If only we had an insider who could give us a percentage on this deal happening ... I just spent the last half hour reading through the now-locked Yelich rumor thread from last offseason. There were so many off-the-mark comments, but others were close to right-on. One poster even floated the idea of trading for Yelich and signing Cain a week before it actually happened. A few of the Yelich trade proposals were pretty dang close as well. Of course, as the speculation mounted in the couple days leading up to the deal on Feb. 25, things got a little nervy. Still, it was fun to read through in retrospect, and I recommend it if you have some free time. I wonder if this thread will get that far?
  4. Two players that I am guaranteed to confuse with each other as they move up the ladder. Maybe Stearns is trying to find his own version of Altuve? Probably much more likely, though, that they need players to fill out the DSL squads. Odds are these guys won't make much of an impact in the system, but who knows?
  5. I really do too. I think this move was the first of a very big offseason for the future of the franchise. They need playmakers..... not sure we see that on defense. Another .500 type year is what I feel. Seems kinda premature to make that sort of statement, don't you think? Any answer other than "yes" would be incorrect here.
  6. If you consider Davies and Anderson garbage, you're going to have a lot of dumpster divers. Why is it that every time the Brewers deem a player as available, there are fans who deem them not worth anything? Davies had a rough injury-plagued year last year, but was great in 2017, is entering his age 26 year and is cost controlled for several more seasons. Anderson, despite his propensity to give up long balls last year, was actually still a very effective, durable starter last year. I mean, look at his numbers! Even in a down year, pretty much any team would take those stats from a mid-rotation guy. And he was better than that in 2017. It's frustrating to see people look right past stats, results and proof.
  7. I'm really surprised it took an Major League deal to get him. His recent stats scream minors deal with an invite to Spring Training and one of those out clauses. Of course, perhaps that last option led to the deal being structured this way s they don't run into the same situation they did with Choi last year.
  8. Putting myself in their shoes and there is no way I am taking that deal. An astute GM knows they are not competing in the next 2 seasons and I want players that will be making their debut and contributing when that window opens again. Anderson/Davies and Perez do nothing for that window and Supak is too much of an unknown for me to accept that for Bumgarner. I understand Burnes/Woodruff/Peralta is likely not realistic and if I am dead set on a SP, I require Brown and want Erceg and Supak to round out the deal. I get why the Brewers would make Davies available, but lets not kid ourselves that he doesn't fit the window of a rebuilding club. He is entering his age 26 season and is under team control through the 2022 season. An affordable, proven innings-eating mid-rotation starter is actually a perfect fit for a rebuilding club.
  9. I'm going to assume looking again at the wording of the tweet that the conversation started with Woodruff, Peralta and Burnes for the initial ask, and when the Brewers balked and called the Giants' bluff, the talk then turned to Ray.
  10. Starting high is all well and good, but it has to be a reasonable starting point or it's just dumb. I doubt the Brewers put Keon on the market asking for Vlad+ or similar value. This starting point isn't AS dumb as that starting point would have been, but I think you see my point. Asking Peralta for MB is not realistic even as a starting point. It also is possible that the Brewers and Stearns don't hold Peralta in as such high esteem. He looked great at times last year, but he also wouldn't be the first young pitcher to come up showing promise, only to go downhill.
  11. If they want one of those young pitchers and Ray, I would think there would have to be more coming back than just Bumgarner. Giants have other pieces that I would think would be of interest.
  12. Peralta and Ray for Bumgarner, Smith and Panik would intrigue me.
  13. Also should be noted that Bumgarner is a bulldog of a competitor. The Giants have not been all that competitive lately, and while his numbers have still been solid, they aren't up to the levels they were during the Giants' World Series runs. Has he taken his foot off the gas a bit playing for a non-competitive team, or is he truly starting to decline? That's the question that Stearns and the Brewers need to answer.
  14. If following baseball transactions has taught me anything, its that if the Brewers do acquire someone like Bumgarner, there will be posters and fans who think they got a steal, while others will view it as an overpay. If you want a refresher, go look at the Yelich trade thread. Whether it is a fair deal or not is always in the eye of the beholder. With the Yelich deal, many loved it, while others would make you believe that the Brewers' sold their first-born child for a Snickers bar. When the Brewers traded for Greinke, they gave up Cain, Escobar, Odorizzi and Jeffress, and got two years of Greinke, Betancourt and $2 million. Obviously that extra year of control brings huge value. I think Ray probably holds a similar value to what Cain did at the time. I think if it is just a trade for one year of Bumgarner, a fair return would be something like Ray and a lower-level pitcher like Lemons or Jarvis. If the deal could be expanded, though, the Giants have some other pieces that would be of value to the Brewers, including 2B Joe Panik, SS Brandon Crawford, INF Alen Hanson, and pen pieces like Will Smith, Tony Watson, Mark Melancon, Sam Dyson or Ty Blach.
  15. I wouldn't be upset if both Davies and Anderson were slated for rotation spots going into 2019, but both are solid mid-rotation starters on affordable deals who will likely be very appealing to teams with starting pitching shortages. That's why I personally think one, or even both, will be traded before Spring Training, and likely for a return that most are surprisingly impressed with. It would surprise me if they don't go with a stated traditional 5-man rotation to start the season at least. Guerra has already said that the Brewers have him preparing for a pen role next year, and it wouldn't surprise me if he turns out to be one of the top options, health provided. He looked terrific coming out of the pen at the end of last year, and his arsenal of pitches is a good fit there. With Claudio and Hader both being lefties capable of going multiple innings, they are likely fine with their LHRP depth. I agree that they probably want another lefty starter, though, and will likely look at doing a 2-year deal with Miley if they don't go bigger for someone like Bumgarner or Kuechel.
  16. You can only trade competitive balance picks, not your regular picks.
  17. No kidding. Last year at this time many posters were ready to use Ray as a throw-in trade sweetener, and now he's an untouchable prospect? Look, I like Corey Ray, and I have no doubt that he's going to be a Major League OF ... maybe even a pretty good one. But he is also 24 years old and is looking at seeing AAA pitching for the first time in his career in 2019. He is also blocked by two former MVPs and another player who garnered MVP votes last year, along with Ben Gamel and what will likely be another OF depth signing like Granderson. He is also likely behind Tyrone Taylor and Troy Stokes Jr. on the depth chart due to their 40-man statuses. Now, using Ray in a package for Kluber makes a lot of sense. But the Indians have shown absolutely no indication that they don't want to go into the season with once again a train wreck of an OF, and little depth there on the horizon. The Marlins have shown no indication that they are anywhere close to asking for a palatable return for Realmuto, and I'm not interested in trading Hiura, Ray and Burnes for him. If the Brewers can pick up Bumgarner and what will likely be a qualifying offer draft choice for Corey Ray and change, I think that's a deal you make pretty easily.
  18. I really do too. I think this move was the first of a very big offseason for the future of the franchise. I truly think that we'll see a couple "splash"-type acquisitions this offseason. Gute knows that the window with Rodgers is not large, and while it is very important to build depth through the draft, it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see the Packers make a trade for a pass rusher like Von Miller or Chandler Jones. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to see them go after OL and a TE early in the draft. I think they make a play for a safety as well. I believe we're going to see a level of player movement from the Packers that we haven't seen since the Ron Wolf years.
  19. Young innovative offensive guy. Known for getting the most out of his players. Has worked with multiple top QBs. A lot there to like.
  20. Agreed. No way at all. I'd go Ray and maybe someone like Herrera
  21. LOL @ Mets fans saying that Brox is being brought in to back up Juan Lagares. Lagares is oft-injured, and pretty beyond useless when he is healthy. He's also extremely overpaid.
  22. If Ray is the keynote piece going back, I make that deal yesterday. Ray is a nice prospect, and coming off a breakout season certainly increases his value. But I have a hard time seeing where he fits into the Brewers' contention window, and he is likely always going to have contact and swing-and-miss tendencies, which is going to lead to a low average and middling OBP. It seems that Stearns is making a concerted effort to get away from those types, so it doesn't surprise me that Ray is on the block.
  23. The Brewers' love of versatility and the lack of perceived news on him is starting to make me wonder if the Brewers are a darkhorse to sign Marwin Gonzalez. He's a switch hitter who can play nearly anywhere on defense. He'd be another tool for a manager who loves Swiss Army Knife-types.
  24. The Yankees need to crap or get off the pot regarding Gray. Cashman basically told the whole league he was going to get traded back in November, which was a pretty blatant signal that they wanted him gone. Then you see rumors that they want a top prospect or solid MLB piece for him. Forget that noise. If I'm Stearns, I offer Thames straight up with no money changing hands. If they eat most of his contract, I offer someone like Stokes or Houser. If they balk, tell them to pound sand.
  25. Going off the eye test, I'd say Keon is probably a little faster and more athletic than Cain in CF, but Cain is a little more instinctive. Probably makes the two of them about a wash. Keon did seem to lose concentration at times out there, which led to some interesting defense on "can of corn"-type plays. I'll miss Keon's infectious energy. He always seems to play with a smile on his face, and no one is ever going to question his effort.
