  1. Forgot to mention Josh Harrison above. He'd fit Stearns' MO as a guy who can play nearly anywhere, and would be a terrific locker room guy. He'll turn 32 in July.
  2. He doubled down late last night after the Grandal news broke that the Brewers are still in on Moose. Moose seems to be spending a lot of time with Yelich, Braun and Mike Attanasio out in LA this offseason. It wouldn't surprise me if he's got a contract offer from the Brewers in hand, and is only waiting on Machado to sign his mega deal to see if one of the runners up throw stupid money at him as a response to not landing Manny.
  3. The 2B dominos are starting to fall. Plenty of fish left in the sea, though. LeMahieu, Lowrie, Gonzalez and Dietrich would all be solid FA solutions for the Brewers. Whit Merrifield, Starlin Castro or a darkhorse like Joey Wendle on the trade market as well.
  4. Well, cross Dozier off the list: That is a good deal for the Nats, and lets Dozier recoup value. I would have done that deal if I were Stearns.
  5. Same was said about Andre Rison, he had even more issues. That worked out alright. In fact, Favre was a problem child before he came to GB. Every player, every situation is different. I share your concerns, but I'll trust the Packers to do their homework. And if they feel uncomfortable at all, I agree with you- stay away. Apples and oranges situations. That 1996 team lost its superstar receiver, Robert Brooks, to a devastating ACL tear, and while Antonio Freeman and Derrick Mayes were promising, they were both very young and somewhat unproven. Don Beebe was that team's wily vet, but he wasn't the type of starting WR that a Super Bowl team should have been counting on. Desmond Howard had proven by that time that he was never going to be the type game-changing WR he was in college. Rison was a superstar-level talent available at a supremely discounted price. He was the perfect fit for that team. But it was telling that the Packers didn't try to overly hard to resign him following the SB win.
  6. We are also paying him $18+ million to play every day, or nearly every day, and you just can't do that with a 30-year-old catcher. Pina is a streaky hitter, and if he gets on one of his hot streaks, there are going to be times that you want both his and Grandal's bats in the lineup. I have no doubt that Grandal will see time at 1B this year, along with at DH in interleague games.
  7. Looking at who the Brewers play going into the All Star break gives me nightmares.
  8. Manny Pina is a perfect fit as a backup catcher in a 70/30-style timeshare. If Pina gets one one of his hot stretches, Grandal can even grab a few starts at 1B here and there. Not only does this move make the Brewers' starting lineup better, it has a huge impact on the team's depth. Pina goes from being an average MLB starting catcher to possible the best backup catcher in the league. Kratz goes from catching 80 games at the MLB level to serving as an on-field coach and mentor at AAA, and as a solid "in case of emergency" option. Nottingham goes from one Pina injury away from being a starting MLB catcher on a World Series contender, to a developmental guy who the team can bring along slowly, and will be given the chance to prove that his Colorado Springs offensive jump wasn't a fluke.
  9. Don't they still have their 1st and 2nd, or did I miss something? Yes, they have picks #28 and #66, then jump to #134.
  10. I don't know if Brown will be the guy, but this is exactly the type of move I expect the Packers to be looking at this offseason. They've been hamstrung by Ted Thompson's inactivity for too long, and it has probably cost them at least one Super Bowl, multiple playoff wins, and a good coach his job (part of that was McCarthy's message getting stale too). You've already seen that Gute is going to be more aggressive, and knowing that Rodgers likely has 5 years max, they aren't going to continue to sit on the sidelines while the teams around them improve. The Vikings and Bears proved that the NFC North is there for the taking, as neither of those teams are or are even close to elite. WR isn't near the need that other spots on the roster are, but acquiring him is the type of move that a team that views itself as a Super Bowl contender would make. I think that Rodgers can still be a top-flight QB, but his days of carrying an offense with middling talent on his shoulders may be over. It's time to surround him with top-flight talent and see where it goes.
  11. I distinctly remember that someone posted in the IGT during one of those NLCS games that Grandal was playing his way into the Brewers' price range. That ended up being a pretty ironic joke. Still, it will be nice having Pina as a battle-tested veteran should Grandal develop the yips again.
  12. I'd call this a well thought-out educated guess, but it's still a guess. No one thought we had the cash to sign Grandal to an $18+ million deal, yet here we are. I think Stearns and the Brewers are all about value, and if another big name presents value, I doubt they are going to let an arbitrary budget cap get in the way. I guess we could look at this as a reallocation of the $10 million that would have gone to Schoop, and the $2+ million each that would have gone to Lyles, Vogt, Cedeno and Jennings.
  13. Don't forget that the Packers just hired Ryan Reynolds to be their coach.
  14. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts the Brewers were in on him, and knew exactly what would be required to get him. Which is why Grandal is a Brewer, and why Realmuto will likely start the 2019 season as a Marlin.
  15. I love me some Marwin Gonzalez as well. Very little talk on him so far this offseason. He'd be a terrific bridge 2B, and would be another guy who could literally play anywhere if they need to get Hiura or Dubon in the lineup.
  16. Does that make Nottingham Rube Baker? Maybe Ryan Braun will announce his retirement, then buy the team?
  17. I don't think you make this type of move at the C position, only to leave the poo-poo platter at 2B. They are going for it, and the moves from here on out should reflect that I think. Sign a 2B, and let Hiura develop. Just a matter of who ...
  18. I think Bennett was pretty much universally known as an odd duck, but maybe there was more to his exit than we've been led to believe. Obviously he saw the need to jump ship off the SS McCarthy, and I think we learned why this season. Very much a crap move regardless. Also, it isn't like Cook was a no-brainer re-sign. He was hurt for a pretty good chunk of the year, and while he showed some good chemistry with Rodgers, his career has been a pretty big tease all along. Hard to trust that he'd turn into what he has with the Raiders.
  19. Find a competent 2B (or 3B if the plan is to use Shaw at 2B), and there is no obvious holes in this lineup. I fully expect news of a 2B acquisition in the coming days.
  20. They aren't done making moves. This is an "all in" type of signing. They are going for it in 2019. They are going to find a solution at 2B. It wouldn't surprise me to see a big starting pitching move as well, whether that's Bumgarner, Kluber or some other front-line guy. Buckle up!!!
  21. I wouldn't count Houser out just yet. That guy showed some great, albeit inconsistent stuff in his very limited opportunities at the MLB level last year. Hate to give up on a guy with upper 90s heat, especially after sticking with him through his rehab. Part of me wants to continue to see the Carlos Gomez deal as the gift that keeps on giving as well.
  22. Wow! Talk about an all-in move! This came completely and totally out of nowhere as well. Man I love how Stearns operates! Also, this proves that the thought that the Brewers wouldn't spend this offseason is unfounded.
  23. Perhaps I am misreading things and they feel that Hiura will be up this season. If that happens, you have Moose, Shaw and Perez to rotate between 3B and 1B with Aguilar based on matchups. They could start Perez at 3B against tough lefties. Not ideal in my mind, but if they feel that Moose provides more value than who they are looking at on the FA market at 2B, I get it. They were linked to Moose at this time last year, and obviously they traded for him and played him every day through the stretch run, so it's pretty obvious that they like him.
  24. I could see something like a 2-year/$16-$18 million deal with Moose.
  25. There is a 100% chance of something happening. Not sure if it will be now or next offseason. He will go somewhere though. If for some reason he doesn’t get moved (which he will), that percent drops to 0%. Things can change quickly. It’s getting pretty wild. You won’t like who’s being mentioned in the trade, but I can’t tell you who it is. And don’t ask for any hints! Things are pretty fluid right now though, check back tonight at 9 for an update Joey. +1. I wish there was a way to promote posts here. That is just terrific! Really puts the ridiculousness of late January last year in perspective
