  1. Or he just didn't have any other offers, and he saw that the Brewers have a starting pitching need, so he figured this was his best opportunity. I highly, highly doubt the team's brass promised him anything. In fact, seeing that Gallardo signed an actual ML deal, I'd say that as of now, he has a better shot of breaking camp with the team than Miley does. The fact is, the team needs pitchers willing to get pummeled at Colorado Springs, and Miley wants to collect a paycheck. I still don't have a doubt that they will acquire another higher-end starting pitcher. It doesn't hurt to have several veteran arms in the organization in case there is a rash of injuries.
  2. Well, I hope he's ahead of Espino, considering Paolo is in the Rangers organization now. Actually, no I don't.
  3. Think the Tigers may be interested in a 31-year-old workhorse lefty? He'd be cheap!
  4. Hopefully he has some type of early-season opt-out date, which he will exercise so he can go pitch every fifth day for the Marlins. That's the type of team for Miley. He shouldn't be anywhere near a playoff-contending rotation.
  5. This reeks of a Doug Melvin-type signing. I can't possibly see what they see in Miley to think that he stands a chance of turning it around. But just think, if they signed Tillman, they'd have 3/5 of the Orioles 2016 rotation! Wonder what Ubaldo Jimenez is up to?
  6. Reminds me of the Tommy Milone signing last year. The Brewers seem to have a guy like this in camp every year. If he makes it at the expense of someone like Woodruff, Suter or even Jorge Lopez, I'll be disappointed. But ... if they need starters to to be shelled as sacrificial lambs at Colorado Springs, while the real pitching prospects are in Biloxi, I guess it's fine.
  7. Ugh, hopefully he's just a deep depth signing. I don't want to see him anywhere close to the ML rotation.
  8. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/rosenblog/ct-spt-jake-arrieta-cubs-brewers-cardinals-rosenbloom-20180214-story.html The only thing I can think while reading this is BARF! These idiots have one title in a century, and suddenly are looking down their noses at everyone else. Ugh! This almost makes me want the Brewers to sign Arrieta, and have him destroy the Cubs for the next 3 seasons.
  9. Man, just look: https://twitter.com/HighHeat9Teen I cant at work. Thanks! Gotcha ... no, no updates. I'm sure anything would be up on this thread momentarily if there were, though. I think for the sake of everyone's sanity, we should probably lay off begging him for updates. That's kind of what got things messy to begin with.

  11. If Braun to 1B is a mirage, where does he play? You don't acquire Yelich to play him out of position in RF, and while I suppose Braun could play in RF, he's not the ideal solution there, either. I agree that there are likely several personnel moves this team has left to make, because the makeup of the roster doesn't make a lot of sense. I would imagine Santana, Broxton and one of Thames/Aguiar are all on the trade block, which opens up 1B for Braun to be part of a platoon there, with the rest of Braun's starts coming in LF, giving Yelich breathers or kicking Yelich to CF to give Cain breathers. I still believe that Phillips will see most of the time in RF.
  12. Could be, but you'd have to think it's more of a 1-year contract guy since they'd be paying in trade value for 4 years of Broxton when they really only need someone for 2 months. You are probably right. Looking at all those pitching prospects the Braves have has me wishful thinking, though. But they'll probably just do something like sign Dyson.
  13. Bumping this thread. Could Broxton be the target?
  14. Everyone should worry about themselves and let HH19 worry about himself. And last I looked, this is the Alex Cobb thread, let's keep it that way. +1
  15. I see matching WARs of 3.9 in his 25 and 26 year old seasons, which is pretty dang close to elite to me. He missed his 27-year old season, and the majority of his 28-year-old season with the Tommy John surgery, then put up a 2.4 WAR in 29 starts last year while knocking off the rust. I mean, yeah, he's not the "name" guy people are looking for, but going into 2015, he was considered Tampa's #1, ahead of Archer. I just don't see where the problem is. If you are worried about injury history, yeah, he had nagging stuff that held him back a bit in the years before his elbow blew out. But he was durable last year, and yeah, he's got upside.
  16. Really, you're that sure about a 28-year old who has ~100 innings above AA? Should be Woodruff as I just copied from the previous post. Yes I do. Woodruff is 25. He has the stuff, he performed over that level last year if you scale his innings to ~160 even when he had a bad end of the year (likely tired due to his longest season). I am not against signing Cobb, I have advocated signing him in multiple posts as long as we don't overpay for the production he brings. I think he is excellent insurance against delayed Nelson recovery/performance and to keep us close going into the trade deadline where I hope we add that TOR starter through a trade. But at some point in the near future we will have younger alternatives that could out-produce him at a fraction of the cost. Cobb wouldn't be replacing Woodruff in the rotation. He'd be replacing the 5-headed monster of Suter/Guerra/Wilkerson/Gallardo/Lopez, knocking the other guys down a spot. I think Woodruff is the #5 with a Cobb signing. When Nelson comes back, if everyone is still healthy, you kick whoever is performing poorest to the pen. Those type of situations typically have a way of working themselves out.
  17. It's not that I strictly doubt him or his source, I'm actually rooting for him to be right, but he deleted his previous account in the last week already, started this one a day later and got 1000 followers in the first 24 hrs, I don't think he's that worried about deleting his account again. He never had a Twitter account before Monday. He did, however, have Twitter troll imitators. Probably alternate Twitter handles from the Wild West Brewer Twitterverse. viewtopic.php?f=67&t=36399
  18. Cobb is going into his 2nd season post-Tommy John surgery, which is when you typically see an uptick in velocity and performance for pitchers. His numbers pre-surgery are near ace-level. I believe he's got quite a bit of upside. Substantially more than Davies, who I also like as well. So you are saying Cobb would be #4 behind Anderson, Davies and Nelson? Hell, if the three of those guys are putting up the numbers they are capable of, Cobb would be the best #4 in the NL! Sign me up! Saying you trust Wilkerson to put up similar numbers to what Cobb could give you is a stretch, though. I think Cobb puts up an ERA in the high 2's to low 3's pitching in the NL. That'll get it done.
  19. Ah, the annual "Best Shape of my Life" February feature story. Spring has finally sprung! Yawn! Kemp has become a garbage player with an even "garbagier" contract. I hope the Dodgers enjoy that albatross. No one should even think about bailing them out unless they are giving up some of their top prospects.
  20. Or perhaps go with the slowpitch softball-inspired 4-outfielder defensive alignment. I mean, no one really likes our 2B options anyway, so lets just not have one.
  21. That's pretty much impossible to predict. I mean, that's why they play 162 games, right? I mean, no one knew that the Cubs would stumble out of the gate last year, and that the upstart Brewers would spend more than half the season in 1st place. But it happened. I think the acquisitions of Cain and Yelich got a lot of fans excited, but now that it has had time to calm, I think expectations need to be tempered a bit. Is this team a playoff contender? Yes, no doubt. They are better than they were last year, and they were a playoff contender through 161 games last year. Are they a division title contender? Yes, but with the caveat that, at least on paper, the Cubs and Brewers probably have similar offensive upside, while the Cubs rotation is a notch above the Brewers. Also, the Brewers aren't going to sneak up on anyone this year. The rest of the league knows they are a playoff contender. Right now, I am expecting them to be in the thick of the wild card race, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least if they were battling with the Cubs for the division up until the end. And depending on what moves can still be made before the season even starts, that expectation may very well improve.
  22. Better than Anderson? Well, if we get the same Anderson we got last year, that is arguable. Better than Davies, Chacin, Woodruff and Gallardo/Wilkerson/Suter/Guerra/Lopez? That's a big yes. On the current staff the way it is constructed, Cobb is basically a co-#1 with Anderson, and slides down if/when Nelson comes back and regains form. I would say stuff-wise, Cobb is a notch above Anderson as well. He'd be an extremely solid pickup.
  23. My thought is if they don't add a starter, and Davies and Anderson pitch like they did last season, and Chacin provides solid #3-like numbers, and Woodruff fulfills his potential and provides a solid #4, and #5 can be held down competently by the likes of Suter, Gallardo, Wilkerson, Lopez or Guerra, and Nelson makes a May comeback and is the same TOR pitcher he showed to be last year, they stand a CHANCE of being in the Wildcard hunt. But that's a lot of "ands" ...
  24. Just a warning, though. If you think the negativity is bad here, it's at a whole other level in the Brewer Twitterverse. I get the feeling that a lot of those guys are former BF.net posters who got kicked out for one reason or another. Rise above.
