  1. Board management is now forbidding us from having an In Game Thread tonight? Just because the Crew has struggled recently doesn't mean that the mods have to become fascists. When we become fascistfan.net, I have dibs on BenitoMussoliniCanRake.
  2. We are putting up the Christmas tree tonight.
  3. Ok, the first thing I need to clarify is that Nelson is not currently on the 40-man roster. He was, but I had forgotten he was outrighted in June 2006. This means we don't need to worry about options or the 40 man roster, but we do still need to worry about him becoming a free agent. It is important to note that Milwaukee can't simply add him to the 40-man roster to keep him. I think you are confusing the Rule 5 draft and minor league free agency. From the BF.net FAQ: What is the 40-man ros The 40-man roster is comprised of all of the players on the 25-man roster, anyone who is on the 15-day disabled list, and minor leaguers who usually have played 3 or more professional seasons. Players who are on the 60-day disabled list are not on the 40-man roster. A team may recall players that are on the 40-man roster that are not on the 25-man roster during the season.[/i] The only time Nelson will be on Milwaukee's 40-man roster again is if he were added to the 25-man roster. And, if that were to happen, I think he'd be out of options. Now, after six minor league season, which would be after this year, Nelson can become a free agent. He could still resign with the Brewers, but as a FA he isn't obligated to do so. If he were to sign a minor league deal with the Brewers, he would be property of the Brewers and wouldn't be on the 40 man roster. That said, there are probably other teams that would put him closer to seeing time in the majors if he signed with them. As a player who has worked for 6 seasons to get to the majors, I am sure he will give a lot of consideration to moving on if he thinks he has a better chance of making it to the majors with another team. Sorry for the confusion.
  4. the issue at this point is he more of a prospect than dillon, nix, sarfate, rottino, and several other players that are on the 40 man roster? The only way the Brewers can ensure that Nelson remains with the organization is to add him to the 25-man roster next year. If he's not, they'll have to designate him for assignment. He'll probably clear waivers, and if he expresses a desire to play elsewhere, the Brewers will probably let him. Just because he's "better" than some of the guys you mentioned doesn't meant he Brewers will or should keep him.
  5. I like him and I think he could have a career, but I wouldn't use a 40 man roster spot on him, and someone will sign him. If you mean this year, right now, there isn't any reason to remove him from the 40-man roster. There isn't a roster crunch and his arm is still good enough to pitch in the majors and have success. He is still an option to pitch in Milwaukee this year if needed, although based upon the call-ups to date that doesn't seem too likely. If you mean next year, simply keeping him on the 40-man roster won't be good enough. He's out of options, so it's 25-man roster or bust with regard to Milwaukee. If there isn't room in Milwaukee, I think he'll find opportunities someplace else.
  6. That didn't work out so well.... Grate... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  7. http://images.lightinguniverse.com/img/i/451/159378_family.jpg Dang Brewers!
  8. Wow... Bill was my favorite coach of all time. He'll be missed.
  9. Parra should be able to pitch Tuesday- that's his normal between-starts throwing day- so he might well stay in the pen until Linebrink returns to the team. At that time, because the Brewers will have 13 pitchers on their roster, I suspect that Parra will be sent to Nashville and either Gwynn or Gross will be recalled. I like what Manny has accomplished and I'd like to see him stay in Milwaukee and pitch out of the pen, but the numbers don't seem to favor that unless the Brewers stay with a 13-man staff.
  10. I don't mean to be insensitive here, but he gets paid over $2 million to pitch. I don't think how much he is paid matters. If he wants to be with his wife and his new child, for whatever reason, no amount of money will allow him to be at his job and with his wife and child at the same time. While I don't have any problem with anyone who doesn't want to spend more than a day off of work for this sort of thing, I think I'd do the exact same thing that Linebrink is doing. I don't think Linebrink should be penalized because he has a higher-profile job or makes a lot of money if he thinks his family is more important than his job (the Brewers).
  11. I have some information about the injury. Dennis pulled a "right chest" muscle, so the injury isn't arm related. It sounds like the report of Dennis not throwing for the next four or five days is accurate, and it doesn't sound too serious. Hopefully Dennis will rejoin the bullpen at the end of the week. What ever Dennis' future might be with Milwaukee, I doubt that the Brewers would release him this year. There isn't any sort of roster crunch in Milwaukee or Nashville, so releasing him doesn't make any sense.
  12. This is the couples first child, so I imagine that he'll take as much time as necessary away from the team to be with his wife and child.
  13. In 56 games Braun has 18 home runs. If one were to project that over 155 games, which seems like a reasonable number of games to play in a full season, that is 50 home runs.
  14. In 56 games Braun has 18 home runs. Over 155 games, that is 50 home runs.
  15. That's silly. Because of a sensationalist media covering something as meaningless as a traffic chase, with helicopters no less, that guy gets slapped with the liability in this case? That's awful. I agree with that. I hope that the people in charge of news departments take a look at how they cover these types of events. I doubt this will change anything, but it's stupid to risk lives for something so trivial as a police change for ratings.

  17. If home runs are a product of a good swing that happens to turn in to a home run....rather than a home run swing (going all out for a homer)...than I am ok with the home runs... But when players get that uppercut in their swing, yes they hit some home runs, but miss opportunities to score runs in other ways and their home run production then is not as important as it would be if they were taking advantage of other opportunities and just hitting home runs when they came. That is the thing, most of the guys are natural home run hitters. They don't hit a lot of them because they are trying to, but rather they hit a lot because they hit the ball high and far naturally. When you look at guys like Braun, Hart and Fielder, guys who hit a lot of homers to left center to right center field, they don't have to try to pull everything to homer. Hall has great opposite field power, too, tho he can get pull happy. Per Uecker, JJ Hardy talked about getting his swing back to where it was earlier this year, that he had developed a bit of an uppercut, but he's the exception and not the rule. The problem at the moment (minus tonight, of course) is that while Braun has been hitting the ball all over the park, he hasn't had a lot of guys on in front of him with Hart slumping and Hardy beeing a lower OBP guy. I think the Brewers would be better off finding a higher OBP guy to hit second instead of blaming it on hitting too many home runs.
  18. Thatcher had a 1-2-3 inning last night, striking out 1 and inducing two ground balls on 14 pitches.
  19. From Jim Powell's chat today: Q: Keith of Appleton - Hello Jim, With it coming to light that Angel Salome was suspended not for steroids but for taking an unauthorized medication, Adderol, for his ADHD instead of his prescribed ritilin, do the Brewers have any recourse to challenge the suspension? It seems like losing the development time (rest of the season) is pretty harsh considering the meds are so similar. A: Jim Powell - The Brewers cannot comment on the suspension beyond expressing disappointment and have not officially released information about what the substance was which triggered the suspension. Salome already appealed and lost before the suspension was announced. It is a done deal. www.jsonline.com/story/in...?id=639029
  20. This seems to be a very polarizing trade, and I fall on both sides of the issue. I absolutely feel that Linebrink helps out the bullpen this year... Now, on the other end, I hate losing Inman... I guess I feel largely the opposite on this one. I am not so sure that Linebrink helps this team as much as we'd hope. I don't think he's been anything special, and while I think he's been OK this year (not considering his July), I am not impressed with him to the point I'd have pulled the trigger on this trade. While I understand the bullpen has been used a lot, and an extra arm will always help, I believe there were other options available that could have replaced Balfour and supplemented Wise, Villy, Turnbow and Cordero. Heck, one of the guys in the trade to get Linebrink has already had a better outing than any Balfour had to date. And Parra is going to need to probably spend most of the rest of the year in the pen anyways, and he's done OK in his outings so far. I don't mind trading Inman- I like him, and I personally would have rather they kept him because I like him, but I understand the business, and I understand that sometimes you do want to trade unproven but talented players for those who are proven. I understand that Inman could potentially be the next Eveland or something, and trading him now does so while his value is highest. That said, and maybe I am overvaluing Inman, but trading him and two other players (especially Thatcher) seems like a very high price to get a player they may have already had around. I guess I'd have felt better if they'd have got someone closer to a sure thing with regard to their ability to for sure help this team.
  21. And Virginia Tech? Dang, missed that. But still, third best, non-NC team isn't too shabby.
  22. Yeah, I'm sure it'll be Balfour, unless they feel like they're in a position to trade another reliever or something. Ok, I need some clarification. Did Linebrink get added to the 25 man roster immediately upon the completion of the trade? That doesn't appear to be the case, since a roster move wasn't made yesterday before the game. If he doesn't need to get added until he reports to the Brewers, then I think when he reports will depend upon when Balfour is DFA'd. If Linebrink isn't to report until after the completion of Saturday's first game with St. Louis, and if Parra starts the 12:00 game, I think it's possible that Parra will be optioned to Nashville after that game and Linebrink will be added to the roster- especially if the Brewers intend to go back to a 12-man staff after the Cards series. The advantage to waiting until after the Cards series to DFA Balfour and recall Gross is that Balfour will be available to pitch Saturday night or Sunday if necessary, whereas Parra won't be available. Of course, this is all moot if I missed Linebrink reporting, or if you have to add the player within so many days/hours of the completion of the transaction regardless of whether or not he has reported to the team yet.
  23. He is bitter because I got him booted after the trade Ryan Braun thread. Like I said... with friends like that...
  24. It should be noted that only one team who didn't win a national championship during that 10 year span was rated ahead of Wisconsin, that being number 11 Georgia.
