  1. I guess I sort of disagree. If he was a Cylon, i'd be concerned about his motives. Are you talking about the robot-looking Cylons with the red eye thingie, or the humanoid-looking Cylons? Or, are you talking about the Cylons that are space-ship like? I knew I should have kept watching that show...

  3. And weren't there injury concerns about Rogers because he threw across his body? That's why they've been revamping his mechanics. It could be the same blister problem that Mark had last year, too. It's hard to jump to a conclusion without any news beyond "he's on the DL". I'm going to remain positive until given news to make me worry.

  5. Congratulations, Brian. Jeanette and I are glad that you've moved an hour closer to us, even tho it's still too far away to be on your softball team.
  6. A foul ball is a strike, so they are counted in a players pitch count as a strike.
  7. I think SFs count as a plate appearance when calculating OBP, but not not as an AB when calculating batting average. That's how you end up with low-walk guys like Alex Sanchez occasionally having a lower OBP than batting average. I think your calculations are right as is End's explaination.
  8. Ok, Chis I understand that. I guess I think the odds of needing the 3rd Catcher are low(I'm sure Billy Hall can do everything!). Just in that spot i know you are rolling the dice a bit, but it is a chance to win too. If we fear ever hitting for Moeller, maybe we need to add a utility guy that could catch in a pinch, or at least anotehr postion player for another bat. Maybe the call up of Vinny would solve this. I'm sure the odds of needing a third catcher are low. And chances are really good that if Miller comes into the game he doesn't get hurt. But, if he does, that position is so specialized and so important that having to throw out a non-catcher is really, really scary. It's probably scarier to Yost, who's a catcher himself and as manager has to at least keep those sort of emergancy situations in mind. Yost was probably thinking something he didn't need to roll the dice because he had other things going for him even if Moeller failed in that spot: 1) If Moeller doesn't get it done, there is still a decent chance Cirillo will. 2) If they don't score at all in the 8th, he's bringing Turnbow in. They aren't gonna get any runs, which means they have the top of the order in the 9th in a tie game. If Yost is thinking like that, combine what was said about not losing a backup catcher, and its not a bad choice. I don't think the decision to leave Moeller in is a no-brainer. And, you're right, if Miller gets in for a few innings, it's probably not the end of the world. I think Yost handled it correctly, but I wouldn't have complained if he went the direction you suggested.
  9. Great win! Very fun. Wondering why Ned didn't hit for Moeller in the 8th? 1) Using a pinch hitter doesn't guarantee a run is scored. 3) You use up two pinch hitters (the guy who hits for Moeller and the guy who hits for the pitcher) 2) If you don't score a run, or you give up the lead in the top of the 9th, you play the rest of the game without a backup catcher and you have used an extra pinch hitter.
  10. a-p-p-l-e-t is a reserved word of somekind that is disabled. But, you can still write out Appleton if you don't mind being creative. I simple use empty italic tags in the middle of the word.
  11. From my own amature point of view, I generally prefer K/9 and BB/9, because the ratio doesn't tell give us an indication of those raw numbers, and they are, in my opinion, more important. Three guys can have an identical 2:1 K/BB ratio, but their K and BB rates can be very different and they can have three very different levels of effectiveness because of it. Guy A might have a 8k/9:4bb/9 ratio, and he's probably walking too many hitters. Guy B might be 6k/9:3bb/9, his lower walk total may be more benifical than the lose in K's. Guy C might have be a 4k/9:2bb/9 guy, and while his low walk total is great, he might strike out too few guys to be successful consistently. With regard to small samples skewing numbers, I think that's a potential problem with pretty much every stat/number associated with relievers. My preference for using K and BB rate stats is just as effected by a clunker outing as the k:bb ratio you asked about.

  13. After losing eight in a row, Milwaukee looks to win their third straigh againt San Diego to move within three games of .500. They'll be only 2 games under with a win. Darn you and your stats. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Thanks for the correction. Two games under is definately better than three.

PREVIEW: Tonight Zack Jackson (0-0, 0.00 ERA -- 2-2, 3.00 in AAA Nashville) makes his first career major league start and second appearance when he faces Padre Chan Ho Park (3-3, 4.26 ERA). Jackson throws a four-seam fastball, two-seam fastball, change, cutter and a slider. His four-seam fastball works between around 90-92 mph most games. The defense will need to stay alert tonight, as Jackson pitches to contact and has struck out only 39 in 57.0 AAA innings this summer. 15. It wasn't Melvin (at least I don't think he made any comments), but rather Gord Ash who made the comments about Jones: LINK: BF.net: mlb.com news on Parra, Jones
  16. Perhaps it would be worth checking with EZBoard to see if other users are experiencing the same sort of problems. They may have suggestions or an explaination for any slowness you experience. LINK: EZBoard Help My experience has been when the BF.net forums are slow in loading, all sites are slow in loading. My problems seem to be ISP related, not BF or EZBoard related.
  17. And none of this is taking mental effects into account. If a player is corking his bat and is thinking that it's going to make him considerably better, then he probably will actually hit at least somewhat better. There is a mental aspect there that I know some people don't want to recognize. I'm sure there is a mental aspect. I'd argue that any mental edge gained by corking a bat is simply counteracting self-imposed limitations that all people place upon themselves. Iribarren (and every other player) is physically limited in what he can do with a bat. No matter how much he trains, no matter how mentally focused and positive he is, there are certain physical barriers that he can't overcome. It takes more than physical skill, however, to reach physical limits. I think it's pretty safe to say that Iribarren (and every other player) don't reach those physical limitations for a number of reasons, some of which are physical and some of which are mental. Can using a corked back give Hernan a "mental lift" that will improve his actual on field performance if he thinks it will help? I'm sure he can, but it's only helping to overcoming his own mental limitations to physical performance. Hernan doesn't need cork for that any more than Roger Clemens needs Icy Hot in his jock or John Doe needs to eat spinach before every meal. While each may have the desired affect (of allowing the mind to work better with the body), there are other ways of getting that same affect, and at least what Roger and John do is within the rules. Considering the risk involved, the (at best) mixed physical rewards, and other ways of obtaining the same physical and mental results, and I think Hernan made a rather curious decision.
  18. I remember everyone saying how stupid Sosa was for using a corked bat back when he was caught because it doesn't have the effect the players are looking for. There is a baseball physics website that I used to have bookmarked that did an excellent job of saying why it was flawed and offering alternative methods for doctoring a bat that actually work. I'll see if I can dig that up that URL tonight.
  19. Reporting from Des Moines... We sat next to the Sounds bullpen down the RF line. We spent a lot of the night chatting with Alec Zumwalt and had a blast. Nice night for Dave Krynzel- he was very patient and worked the count well. His double was hit well to left-center, and his single in the ninth was about 5 feet from being a game tying homer. It was hit so hard that Krynzel had no chance for anything but a single. He also had a stolen base and a nice running catch in CF. He looks like he is playing a little deeper in CF than I remember him playing in Huntsville. Nelson Cruz had a tougher night. Last night he hit everything hard, but tonight it was a struggle for him to make contact. But he's got a cannon for an arm, and he looks like he has wayyyy to much fun out there (turning summersaults while shagging balls during BP, getting into a catchers stance while warming up defensively). Between his tools and his demenor, he might be my favorite offensive prospect in the ogranization. With regard to pitching and defense... Justin Lehr did alright. He was working in the high 80s most of the night, touching 90 on occasion. The stadium gun might be slow, tho, as I never saw Sarfate hit more than 94 last night. The three homeruns he gave up were no-doubters. Mike Meyers and Alan Simpson booth looked sharp and kept the Sounds in the game in spite of the rather sporadic offense. The defense was pretty solid, other than Jermaine Clark three-hoping a throw to Abernathy to record a 4-4-4-3 ground out. I think the guys in the bullpen were as disapointed as we were that they didn't show the replay, because we have no idea why the throw was soooo bad. Jeanette also managed to snare a liner (I think off the bat of Rivera) during BP. It was an impressive enough catch that both Alec Zumwalt and Dennis Sarfate commented on it. One more game tomorrow, with Fernandez going for the Sounds. Hopefully they can take one game while we are in town.
  20. He recorded an out on a sac bunt. Chipper Jones made the play.
  21. In spite of the hit given up to the pitcher, nice inning for Eveland...
  22. would you keep a guy who has a 1.100 ops w/ Risp but has a .597 w/ out? - also want to find vice versa No, and yes. First of all, a regular player is going to have three or four times as many ABs without RISP as they do with. Therefore, Guy 1 is gonna have a 700 OPS overall, while Guy 2 is gonna be Albert Pujols or Barry Bonds. Second, RISP performance is generally not repeatable. If you need an example of that, look at Damian Miller's 2004 and 2005 numbers with and without RISP, and look at Brady Clark's 2005 and 2006 numbers with and without. If you can find a pattern, please let me know, because I don't see one.
  23. I hope we don't ever have to throw over to 1B The Brewers have a day game against the Phillies. Brewerfan.net's softball team doesn't list a first baseman in their starting lineup and their game isn't until 9pm. "Batting cleanup for BF.net, first baseman, number 28, Prince..." http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
