  1. $18M for one year isn't necessarily better than $15 each for four years. Security matters. Baseball contracts are guaranteed. $18M for one year doesn't mean he will make $60M over the 4 years. It gets even better if he is able to sign for $70M for five years with a opt out after 3. That is security plus opportunity. The Brewers could even set it up at 15M per for three and then $12.5 for the last two. Insurance against slipping production plus opportunity for 3 good years to turn into a new 3 or 4 year deal when he is 33.
  2. Eduardo Rodriguez from Boston would fit the Archer mold for team control for the next few years. It may take a bit more than Santana but Santana would fill a bosox need chheply so the could then sign one of the pitchers remaining.
  3. Corbin + Jon Duplainter for Santana and Wilkerson
  4. The bigger question is: Can Phillips play second base?
  5. If nothing changes: 25 man roster generally will include 12 pitchers. Sometimes 13. 8 positional starters So you are at 20. Then you add Santana as outfielder number 4 if he isn't traded which brings you to 21. Add to it which ever person isn't playing second base is 22 Plus a Perez that can play all over is 23 A back up catcher is 24. So then it is either Aguilar, Phillips or another multidimensional player on the bench. If the Brewers sign a true second baseman than there is no room for Phillips. Even if they don't; having another player that can play both infield and outfield may hold more value than keeping Phillips on the active roster. Plus you may not want this young of a player rusting at the end of the bench. This is all assuming that that Brewers value Phillips above Broxton as a fifth outfielder. Unless something changes Phillips is a Triple A all star this year!
  6. More recently, as Burnes is appearing in Top 100 lists, you read that he possesses stuff to be a top of the rotation starter, has excellent control, and still room to gain consistency on his curveball and change up to be weapons. He may be ALL That and a bag of peanuts. I don't get how many people are describing Phillips as the perfect fit for the Brewers roster this year. Unless Santana is traded, it is highly unlikely that Phillips spends much time on the 25 man active roster unless one of the four other outfielders has a substantial stay on the DL.
  7. This has potential. Maybe pieces like Perez, Wilkerson and a Grisham? This would be the trade to make if they have no luck signing one of the big 4 free agent pitchers. It still gives you four experienced starters at the beginning of the season.
  8. Eh. Maybe he found something last year or maybe he didn't. I don't know that he offers much more than Woodruff or Wilkerson unless the Brewers can really point to something that he was doing different in 2017 from 2016 and they feel it is sustainable.
  9. I think it is a bit much. I can see why people are excited. Archer has the stuff. And he will be going to the National League which will help. But the last 2 years his ERA has been just over 4.00. He walks a few too many and his WHiP is above 1.25. This isn't a small sample and he is almost 30 so he should have been at peak production the last two years. He may be a guy that turns into an ace for a few years or he may be someone with electric stuff but never gets an ERA below 3.00 and wins 15 to 20 games. There are intangibles in pitching which lead to top level success. I don't know that Archer gets there.
  10. Trading for Oddorizzi and signing Cobb sounds fine. And in this scenario you are left with two options: 1. Trade for an ace at the deadline. 2. Ortiz or Burnes becomes a Nelson or Anderson and you are in great shape for the next 4 or 5 years. If you trade for Archer your options are: 1. Archer's stuff really is better than his 4+ ERA and you are playoff bound. 2. Archer isn't that great and/or gets hurt and you can't make other moves cause so many prospects are gone.
  11. Narrowing down the "source": Health and physicals Media and Marketing Bagels and coffee Leaking information to rile up the ardent fan base Coordinator He/she has to be in one of these areas or some other part of the front office of the organization. Or maybe with the CIA and they are spying?
  12. Ryu doesn't offer much more than Suter. The Brewers have enough fifth starters. They Dodgers are trying to off load an outfielder not add one. There doesn't seem to be a good fit here.
  13. What about trading Yelich? He hasn't been a Brewer that long so fans aren't so attached to him. And as I understand it, he is worth at least some pretty good prospects. Maybe the Brewers could score a top of the rotation guy for him straight up?
  14. I think that Darvish will sign on Friday. This free agent season has been strange. I can see why the top players are all hanging around waiting for Darvish to sign but what is happening with everyone else? Set up bullpen guys signed early and for more $$ than expected. A few 4th starter type guys have signed. But almost everyone else is just waiting. Even the Walker and Nunez type folks.
  15. Actually as a Red Wings fan, this year, I could be converted
  16. It is more likely Santana for Mejia straight up.
  17. This is perhaps the worse written contract in MLB: (From Baseball Prospectus) $18M signing bonus (paid in $3M installments each 5/31, 2016-21) •16:$31M, 17:$31M, 18:$31M, 19:$31.5M, 20:$32M, 21:$32M •total of $62.5M in salary is deferred ($10M each in 2016-18, $10.5M in 2019, $11M each in 2020-21), to be paid in five installments of $12.5M each 11/1, 2022-26 The only way the Brewers should take this is if the Diamondbacks take all of the deferred $$ and signing bonus paid in each year leaving the Brewers with about $20 to $21M a year through 2021. And even then they should take it in a trade for Corey Ray. This contract is exactly the reason the free agent market is so slow this year. No one will give Darvish a contract like this because it is just stupid to take this type of a chance on a pitcher in his mid-thirties. And yet, because some team has been this stupid, the agents keep holding out.
  18. Signing a position player, even a Center Fielder for 5 years, is one type of risk. Signing a pitcher for five years at $125M is a whole different risk level. I am guessing, no insider information here, that the Brewers made a 3 year 90M offer. The interesting part is the $30M per year. Darvish likely has decided that he wants the security of more years. It is also possible that the Brewers put in an offer with a deadline of prior to the signing of Cain. And it was presented as sign now or forget about it Mr. Darvish. As far as signing Darvish the idea was if they sign Cain they wouldn't be Able.
  19. Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that Cain will earn $13MM in 2018, $14MM in 2019, $15MM in 2020, $16MM in 2021 and $17MM in 2022. This contract seems backwards based on anticipated production. But it does leave an additional $3M to add to what they spend on pitching in 2018.
  20. He is getting paid $15M for 2018 and poof he would be gone. This is more like salary dump for the Diamondbacks so they can sign someone better. I don't think the Brewers want to help with that. And that $15M might be enough to stop the Brewers from signing someone like Cobb. With that in mind I think the Brewers offer a negative deal... We will take Corbin if you pay for us upgrading our spring training facility in your lousy State and no you we won't sell you any water either!
  21. More likely it is Domingo and ____ for Mejia. With the _______ being Perez or Villar and Nottingham. The Indians may also throw in the bottom wrung on their 40 man in this deal just cause they have to clear space. I could see this type of a deal happening.
