The pass catchers can’t even be trusted to reliably run the correct routes, and we’re the youngest team in football overall. No one on the team will say this (except maybe Bakh, because he’ll say anything), but this is a rebuild. And here’s my biggest problem with that situation: it gives everyone a pass. Every important member of this organization can plausibly say their job should be safe because of circumstances:
- Love can say his protection up front was shoddy and his pass catchers were unreliable, deflecting criticism from his putrid accuracy.
- LaFleur can say his offensive players were too inexperienced to be an accurate reflection of his intended vision, deflecting criticism from his inability to go to war with the army he has instead of the one he wants.
-Barry can say his unit isn’t the problem, which deflects from the fact that he may routinely do less with more talent than anyone else in the NFL.
- Gute can say Love needs more time, deflecting criticism from the fact it’s his guy, and considering when and how he took him, Love will be his career-defining move—and he looks historically bad so far.
- And Murphy doesn’t care because he’s created an entertainment wonderland in Green Bay and is done soon anyway.
So no one will be held accountable. And we do more of the same again. Hooray…
