On no timeline does a well run, small market MLB organization in this economic system sign a free agent to pave the way to be able to trade a prospect. That's just not how it works. They may sign a stop gap free agent when they don't have an in-house replacement ready to go, but they're not trading away a young player they're high on just for the right to hand out a big contract to someone else.
