  1. I would be optimistic that he could. And as someone else said, if the Saladino's of the world are getting 2 mil, then why not that coin for Arcia.
  2. Bingo. Another possibility would be trying to shift toward a new lineup composition. Perhaps a move away from the all or nothing, rely on HRs offense. Something I've been begging for and also backed up with the Urias acquistion. If it works out this way and this team is able to score more runs while hitting fewer home runs, it will be fun thinking about all the backtracking posts which won't ever come. I'd bet some of the same people complaining about not re-signing Moose and cutting ties with Thames and Shaw, are the same people who litter the IGTs with complaints about striking out when a run could be scored simply putting the ball in play.
  3. We shall see. I don't think anyone here is expecting anything less than a major haul if Hader is dealt. And with 4 years control a haul is exactly what they should get.
  4. Again, to stay above the level you're dragging this down to, there are other ways to have roster flexibility other than having a guy who plays every position. A good start is having your #1 utility guy being someone who has elite capability at the most important defensive position.
  5. Not really, Hader is not going to fill a bunch of roster spots. If you lose a wheel taking one of the other three wheels to replace the wheel that fell off still leaves you with three wheels. The only way to truly improve is through FA and trade that ADD talent on the MLB roster not subtract. Well if he's traded for 3 MLB pieces or 2 MLB pieces and a prospect, he will have filled 1-2 more roster spots than keeping him. What will you say then?
  6. There were players literally signed after the season started last year. You don't have to count on players falling into your lap. This isn't going to be the first ever free agency that wraps up on December 3rd. These aren't things that should need to be pointed out to adults.
  7. More roster spots to fill. Only increases the likelihood of a Hader deal imo.
  8. Edited my post to reflect your not being in the sky is falling group.
  9. Arcia will be our emergency catcher, relief pitcher, outfielder, and all other infield positions? I could go the other direction with a smartass reply, but instead I'll offer a response much more useful than your retort. Not many teams have someone capable of playing 8-9 positions. So the Hernan Perez role is much more likely to be filled by a more traditional utility player. Arcia can be that guy. Stearns has already commented on Urias' ability to play 2B, SS, and 3B. Since I'm expecting Urias to be an everyday player, it would make Arcia a reverse utility player just as I opined. Arcia spells Urias, and Urias can in turn spell others.
  10. Umm, history is on the side of those who are expecting significant additions to come. The complainers fearing that nothing is going to happen are batting a tidy .000 when factoring in offseasons and trade deadlines. It's like some here have the memories of goldfish or something.
  11. I could see this hand wringing if the talk of what could still come kept amounting to nothing year after year. But since Stearns became GM, he's never sat on his hands even once. The past two offseasons have been highlighted by the Yelich/Cain acquistions and the Moustakas and Grandal signings among other things. Heck they've already made a rather significant trade THIS offseason. Do the "sky is falling" people enjoy winding up with egg on their faces year after year?
  12. Say things like this and you should be willing to leave the forum if 2020 payroll winds up meeting or exceeding last season. C'mon we gotta be better than this here. It's getting out of hand. The forum needs a banner showing how many days are left before spring training.
  13. You said it way more efficiently than I did. Well done! See, and I missed yours and once I saw what you said, I liked yours better. The part about not letting ego get in the way is the essence of it.
  14. Couldn't that sentence continue on to say "planning to cut payroll..........to free up money to overhaul their roster." Not only could it, I'd bet on it.
  15. Claudio trade was a mistake no doubt. Glad they did the right thing in admitting it and moved on rather than continue to try and justify it.
  16. Yeah and all 3 were too risky to take $5 million gambles on imo. Apparently the Brewers agreed. You simply can't use the out option as a factor because the second any of them were tendered, that's $5 million each subtracted from the budget. What part of that is so objectionable?
  17. That sounds like something else might get done, to me at least. Nothing wrong with it either. These guys weren't attractive at their projected arby numbers. But any of them can look much better at a lower number. This also pushes those decisions to a later date which helps with budgeting for other things.
  18. I'm not sure why you would think they don't. Replacing and improving on Shaw's 2019 isn't a tall task.
  19. Smart and not surprising. That would have been a pretty penny to spend on question marks. Hopefully no one here takes this as them being cheap. They're not going to carry a $60 million payroll (or whatever the current tally is). They're going to acquire or sign some people with a salary figure attached, you can count on it. If not, complain at that time.
  20. All 3 plus Claudio non tendered. Money to spend elsewhere.
  21. Then I'm apparently the only one who understands the reverberations if they tender these guys today. I doubt I'm the only one who gets this though. Chance to get out of the deal for a fraction or not, it's $5 million each subtracted from the budget for any of those 3 if they're tendered. That's up to $15 million that won't be spent to improve the roster in other ways. You simply don't tender players with their failing in mind. If they play well in ST, you're spending that $15 million.
  22. I'm sensing a pattern in your reaction to each and every decision they make this offseason.
  23. Damn, I got a free look at the article before but it's behind a paywall now. I could've sworn there were more quotes from Stearns in that article, including one in which Stearns used Hader's name. If not, I'm mistaken and I'd lower the odds of a Hader trade into the territory of a coin toss. If forced to wager, I think he gets moved.
  24. So then they all play great in ST and all are kept. Unless you're suddenly willing to go $15 million over budget, that money committed today most certainly affects how you spend money in free agency. That's why I say, the out in ST is great but not the safety net some here are making it out to be. Sure it's cool that you can save some money if a player flops but the downside is you now have a huge hole with no way to fill it. If they tender Shaw, Nelson, and Guerra that's $15 million out of the budget no matter the fact they can cut their losses later. Like I said, you don't tender these guys under the assumption they'll fail. Because if they don't and you spend elsewhere under the premise of these outs, then you're suddenly way over budget if none of them flop.
  25. Agreed, no surprise on this one. Now tendering any of Shaw, Nelson, or Guerra would be a surprise to me. I think all 3 are gone. However it's always worth remembering that arbitration contracts aren't fully guaranteed. If a player is released before opening day, the team pays something like 1/6-1/4 of the amount depending on when they're released. So think of it like having a $5m option with a $1m buyout, where a decision has to be made in spring training. If the team is feeling hopeful about Shaw and/or Nelson, that could be one rationale behind offering them arbitration. True but you don't budget the rest of your offseason around a player not panning out. So allocating 5 million here, 5 million there, and 5 million there cuts into what you have left to spend. If you're anticipating cutting these guys in ST why bother?
