  1. As a backup, I'd also imagine his PAs were pretty sporadic for the first few years, which makes it tougher to hit. It will be interesting to see how he does if he gets regular PT at AAA. It would certainly be nice to have a MLB catcher come "out of nowhere" for the Crew.
  2. I think Betancourt is set in stone as our opening day starting SS, but I agree on Kotsay. I'm rooting extra hard for Boggs and Dickerson to have great ST just so they're both retained over Kotsay. Almonte has certainly impressed so far, and it will be interesting to see if he can somehow make the club.
  3. I'm not at all convinced that Cruz is better than Betancourt Me either, but if George is the next in line after Cruz, we need to hold onto Cruz. George had two errors in an inning yesterday, and had 40 in 78 games last year. I certainly don't want him as the everyday SS if Yuni goes down. Again, I don't think Counsell will hold up to everyday play long-term
  4. I just hope the Brewers keep him in AAA playing whatever position the Brewers want him to play at the MLB level in 2012. Right now, it doesn't sound like he's MLB-ready at any position.
  5. Bottom line though is it didn't have much bearing on future negotiations. Probably not, but I can't read Prince's mind. He (and Boras) certainly didn't take long to reject the Brewers every time they approached him about an extension. That's pretty typical of Boras, but I can't be certain Prince doesn't have any pent up hostilities. Either way, Prince will be gone and Casey will be under team control for three seasons after this one. The Brewers have done a pretty good job lately at locking up their young talent and I think Melvin will sign McGehee to a multi-year deal when and if he feels he can get it done in a favorable fashion for the Brewers.
  6. This injury will allow the Brewers to do what I was hoping for to begin with: Start Gamel at AAA, bringing him up as an injury replacement (if needed) and probably when they play interleague games. Then next year when Prince is gone, Gamel will be starting at the MLB level at either 1B, 3B or RF. He still has talent, and the Brewers will get five years of him starting through his prime. It sucks for him, as he will lose out on a lot of money, but I think it's the best for the Brewers organization.
  7. I thought he was mad because Ryan Howard got something like $900k in his final pre-arby year and the Brewers only gave Prince somewhere around $600k, using the arguement that Howard had an MVP under his belt, so he was worth more. That was a while ago, so I could very well be wrong.
  8. Just a guess, but I doubt that Cruz will win the starting SS job. More likely, a good spring would mean that he'd win the backup job, and if Yuni plays poorly to start the season or gets injured, Cruz would move into the starting role. I believe that we'd lose Cruz if he doesn't make the opening day roster. The reasons I'd like to see him make the squad are that (A) Yuni's not a great option & (B) if we lose Cruz, then we have no other backup SS options should Yuni get injured or fail. Counsell is fine for a short-term fix, but I doubt he could play every day if Yuni got hurt for an extended period. Cruz may not be a world-beater, but at least his body would hold up to everyday SS duties, and he shouldn't be that big of a downgrade (and may be an upgrade) from Yuni.
  9. Casey doesn't exactly sound thrilled. Could be that, or it could be he knows that players are held under a microscope when discussing contracts/money, so he's nervous that he'll say the wrong thing. I'd guess that Melvin was trying to do exactly what many here said he should do, which is offer a contract that is less than McGehee would likely get if he went year-to-year. McGehee obviously thought the deal was too low, so nothing has been signed. I don't really care too much one way or the other. Casey will be moving out of his prime when his arby years are up, so the additional risk the Brewers would shoulder wouldn't be worth it unless they could get significant (expected) cost savings over the next few years. It'd be nice to have the cost certainty and a happier Casey, but not if the team doesn't save a lot of money. Note: as I type this, McGehee just hit his 2nd HR of the game vs the Cubs :-)
  10. I think Bill & Brian did the non-WTMJ Gameday Audio games last ST, so most if not all of the ST games are broadcast.
  11. Joe, I'd guess Tommy John surgery would make it a certainty that today's pitchers have a longer career.
  12. I'd guess that seeing first-hand how different pitchers' pitches move would help his defense and limit the passed balls. The biggest thing that will keep him in extended ST will probably be getting some ABs against live pitching so he doesn't look completely lost at the plate.
  13. It'll be interesting to see how bad this is, but I've always firgured 6-8 weeks for a broken finger to heal. We're a month and a half out from opening day, so I wouldn't think he'd miss too much of the season. He'll probably need some "extended ST" before he'll be up to speed, so my guess would be that he'll miss 2-3 weeks.
  14. Unless they think that being able to field a grounder or throw a ball accurately from second base to first base is an important part of an MLB 2B's repertoire :-)
  15. There's no real games for another 6 weeks. No, but if you get Gameday Audio, you can listen to every Spring Training game live on your computer. That makes the March afternoons enjoyable.
  16. Good to hear!! Now we should be serious playoff contenders for 2011 & 2012, and even longer if we can get Marcum and/or Greinke extended. I've always liked Weeks' workman-like outlook on things, as is evident in this quote from Adam McCalvy's article: "It's business," Weeks said. "No matter who you are, no matter how you play this game, you're going to go through it. I never sat any expectations. I'm one of those guys who takes whatever happens, because I know it happens for a reason."
  17. My biggest concern would be how he was abused by Cub managers early in his career until he became their closer. It didn't matter the situation... if the Cubs were playing, there was a good chance Marmol would be in the game at some point.
  18. I just have a suspicion something could get done yet with Weeks and maybe Marcum as well. I hope you're right Invader. If we can extend two of Weeks, Marcum and Greinke, then I'm much more positive on the mid-term future of the franchise. If we could extend all three, then I think it'll be really fun to watch the Brewers for the foreseeable future. I just don't like the negative swing things seem to have taken with the Weeks extension talks. I don't think that's a hometown discount but I could be wrong. WTP, it seems a lot of people here think players deserve a lot more than I think they deserve. Weeks has to be compared to other 2B, not to Corey Hart. Justifiable or not, RF's historically have been paid much more than 2B. Marcum signed for below $4MM because his history leading up to this year led him to have a lower salary last season, and that has a significant impact on this year's pay, much like Rickie Weeks has been underpaid through arbitration due to his early injury history / iffy play. That's why, in my opinion, it's important to lock people up when they still have several "cheap" years of control. If you wait until they're in their last arby year before you talk about an extension, the player doesn't really have much to risk by waiting for free agency, much like it appears Weeks is going to do. We definitely should have tried to extend Weeks at this time last year, and we should definitely be looking at extending Marcum and Greinke right now.
  19. They probably have a deal done, they just didn't want upstage the Packers and take all the Wisconsin media attention away from the Super Bowl :-)
  20. Especially since a likely person to lose his roster spot due to this move is Boggs, who is our only RH hitting bench player.
  21. But "solid" is not what Weeks's 2010 was. It was elite, and a reflection of his skillset as opposed to fluky. But, again, Uggla's contract was the highest for a 2B in the history of the game. Does one "elite" season mean that he should be the highest paid 2B in the history of the game? Weeks will be worth more than Uggla, and if the Brewers won't give him that contract, someone else gladly will. If an extension can't be reached, Weeks will definitely be sought after, but I disagree that teams will be lining up to meet or beat the Uggla contract. There will be some merited trepidation from teams due to Weeks injury history and some poor offensive and defensive performance prior to the last 1.5 seasons he's played. That said, I like Weeks, and I do hope the sides are able to come to an agreement. I just worry that Weeks' camp is asking for more than he's worth, and the Brewers are offering less than he's worth, and the two sides may be too far apart to find a common ground. I hope I'm wrong, but early comments from both sides sounded like they wanted to get a deal done, while recent comments by both sides don't seem to point to a deal being reached.
  22. The Cards are definitely in a tight spot, kind of like the Brewers are with Fielder. They probably can't afford to pay Pujols what he's asking, and they'll take a big production hit when he leaves. To add insult to injury, I believe Pujols has stated that he'd block any trade to any team. As a Brewer fan, I like that whatever happens the Cards will feel some pain. However, if Pujols goes to FA, I'm sure Fielder will wait until he signs, and then use the contract as a bargaining point. From a small/mid-market team's perspective, a monster contract like this will have bad effects on contracts in the future. When A-Rod signed his Texas deal, the numbers were so far off the norm for every other player, it didn't skew future contracts too much. Now you have guys like Jayson Werth signing $100MM+ deals, so anything resembling a 10 year/$300MM deal for Pujols is going to make any decent future FA (or extension to a young player) very expensive. So, the Brewers will be able to post a $90-100MM roster, but they still won't be able to afford good players.
  23. The reason we picked up Nieves in the first place was our new manager's desire to have someone with experience as a backup catcher. While I'd rather we keep Kottaras, I think Nieves will get the job. I do wonder whether Roenicke's preference for a "veteran presence" at a backup position also had something to do with the Kotsay signing.
  24. I think Bush is better than a lot of #5 starters out there, so I'm surprised he didn't get a major league offer. Bush gave his all for the Brewers and a lot of his bad numbers came from pitching when his arm had to hurt pretty bad from getting drilled with a line drive. I certainly hope he's able to pitch in the majors in 2011, as I believe he deserves it.
  25. Maybe we can trade them the right to pay his buyout for a low-level minor leaguer.
