The AA Shuckers will try to win a 3rd straight game in Mississippi. The team has the youngest average position player age (22.5) in the league, but is first in walks and stolen bases, and 2nd-best in not striking out. RHP TJ Shook (3.71 ERA in 26.2 IP) makes his 2nd start (10th appearance).

The Timber Rattlers can take a 4th straight contest in West Michigan with a victory tonight, sending 21-year old RHP Stiven Cruz to the mound. Cruz is coming off of two decent outings (combined 10 IP, 4 R, 7 Ks). C Matt Wood has a 6-game hitting streak, lifting his High-A average to .296.

From that point onward, the deflated Sounds managed just one hit (a harmless 6th inning single from Michael Reed), with the final seven Nashville players striking out to end the contest, thus evening the series in Jacksonville at 2-2. Three Quick Strikes: Winker walked to lead off the game, then was registered as caught stealing, which is a shock considering that the relatively slow-footed player had only four attempted stolen bases from 2018-2023. 2B Noah Campbell was also caught on the bases (picked off after a single) in the second inning, as the Sounds’ generated just one run (helped by an error) in the first three innings despite putting the leadoff man aboard each time. C Brian Navaretto collected the team’s only extra-base hit with a 2nd inning double. Starting LHP Thomas Pannone (7 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks) gave his usual respectable performance, though undone by some harder contact than usual (homer, two doubles). The team will likely draw some encouragement from RHP Matt Bush’s first rehab appearance (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks, 1 WP), but let’s see how his health and velocity recover for subsequent outings. Friday’s outlook: RHP Janson Junk (4.27 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 5.6 K/9 in 52 2/3 IP) is scheduled to turn the tide for the Sounds in his 11th appearance of the season. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 8, Mississippi 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Five-Run Sixth Powers Shuckers to 8-2 Win over M-Braves This game was a lot tighter than the final score indicates, as the clubs entered the 6th inning tied at one run a piece. All of the damage in that 5-run 6th inning was produced with two outs, with the Shuckers getting two singles and four walks before left fielder Isaac Collins’ (2-for-4, two doubles, 2 RBIs, 2 SBs) two-run double pushed the lead to 6-1. You’ll see plenty more Shuckers’ video highlights at Biloxi’s Twitter feed. Three Quick Strikes: RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez (5 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 4 BB, 9 Ks) battled admirably in this one, overcoming some heavy traffic with key strikeouts, though needed 98 pitches (54 strikes) to get through five innings. He was helped out by the do-everything Collins and SS Freddy Zamora gunning down a runner at the plate on a double in the 3rd inning - nice relay. Other position players chipping in on the victory included center fielder Jackson Chourio (two hits and a stolen base), Zamora and 3B Zavier Warren (two RBIs each) and DH/3B Tyler Black (a hit and two stolen bases). The team was also happy to see struggling RHP Cam Robinson (1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 Ks) turn in a positive relief stint. For the Braves, Southern League legend 1B Drew Lugbauer connected on his 58th homer over 2.5 seasons of Double-A ball (and 12th this year in just 44 games), as their MLB club has for whatever reason decided that this is how the left-handed masher should spend his 7th minor league season in their organization. Friday’s outlook: Although no starting pitcher is listed, the most likely selection is RHP TJ Shook (3.71 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 10.1 K/9 in 26 2/3 IP), who last pitched one week ago. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 4, West Michigan 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Misiorowski Dazzles in Timber Rattlers Debut Undoubtedly the story of the day was 21-year old RHP Jacob Misiorowski (5 1/3 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 1 BB, 1 HBP, 7 Ks) making his debut in High-A ball and only allowing three baserunners to reach in a dominating performance. The way he mixes 100mph heat with well-placed off-speed pitches is impressive and Brewers’ fans will hope to see many more such performances over the next 20 years. Three Quick Strikes: Though Misiorowski was cruising, the game was actually scoreless into the 6th inning, when the Rattlers finally broke through on center fielder Joe Gray Jr.'s double with two runners on base. That odd play saw the lead runner (2B Robert Moore – 1-for-3, walk, RBI, SB) score, the trailing runner (DH/C Matt Wood – 2-for-4) thrown out at the plate, then Gray himself come around to score on a throw into left field. 24-year old RHP Max Lazar (3 2/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) continued Jacob’s excellent work, pounding the zone with strikes (33 in 43 total pitches) over nearly four innings to deservedly earn his second save. Eight of nine Timber Rattlers’ recorded at least one hit, with 9 of the team’s 10 hits being singles, as the squad finally overcomes the ridiculously low BABIP (now up to .288) which hurt them the past two months. Friday’s outlook: Either RHP Stiven Cruz or RHP Tyler Woessner could get the call to start, with Cruz listed on the MILB.com schedule and Woessner stated in the Game Notes. A win would give Wisconsin a 4-0 series lead and their second consecutive series victory. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Fayetteville 6, Carolina 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Woodpeckers Hand Mudcats Third Straight Loss Starting RHP Logan Henderson (4 2/3 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 6 Ks) did his part, but the offense didn’t generate any extra base hits and left ten men on base in a game which got away from Carolina in the 7th inning. Their third consecutive loss puts the Mudcats one full game behind Down East in the first half standings, so the men need to find another gear quickly to try to take the title. Three Quick Strikes: Henderson’s 70 pitches (51 strikes) and 4 2/3 innings of work are career highs in the Brewers’ system, since being drafted in the fourth round in 2021. The team had taken a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning on 1B Jesus Parra’s RBI single and Henderson exited with the score square at 1-1. Unfortunately, RHP Tyler Wehrle (4 1/3 IP, 5 R (4 ER), 8 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 0 Ks) wasn’t able to keep the game tight, allowing six straight Woodpeckers to reach base (five singles, one hit-by-pitch) in the four-run 6th inning, but thankfully things went better for him over the next 3 2/3 innings as he finished out the game. Offensively, each of left fielder Hedbert Perez (2-for-4, walk, RBI) and Jheremy Vargas (0-for-1, 3 walks) reached base three times, while in the field outfielders Jace Avina and Kay-Lan Nicasia each threw out runners on the bases. This was Nicasia’s first start in center field of 2023, after 15 such games there last year. Friday’s outlook: The team looks to high-performing 20-year old RHP Patricio Aquino (2.39 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 9.2 K/9 in 26 1/3 IP) to end their 3-game skid. Arizona Complex League Action Final: ACL Brewers 10, ACL Angels 4 Box Score / Game Log The most underestimated advantage of combining our two ACL squads in that they can now compete as a Super Team aiming to win the 17-team league. On Thursday, the young Brewers in Arizona outplayed their opposition in every respect: 15 hits to 7, five stolen bases to zero, no errors vs. four for the Angels. It’s still early days, but it must feel good to be young and undefeated at 3-and-0. Every spot in the batting order reached base, with eight of them collecting at least one hit. The team opened the game with four straight singles, led 5-0 after one inning and 10-0 by the 5th inning as they utterly dominated the Angels. Three Quick Strikes: Center fielder Duncan Garcia (3-for-4, triple, 2 RBIs, 2 SBs) and C Satchell Norman (3-for-4, walk, 2 RBIs) each led the way with three hits, while DH/SS Juan Baez (2-for-4, triple, RBI, SB), SS Jhonny Severino (2-for-4, SB) and 1B Johan Barrios (2-for-4) had two each. Starting RHP Daniel Corniel (3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks) was in lineup limbo before the game, mentioned as being in Extended Spring Training but not actually on the ACL roster, thus potentially suggesting an injury matter. Never fear, the organization was just waiting to unleash him at the appropriate time, as he put together a terrific stateside debut. RHP Jesus Rivero (4 1/3 IP, 4 R (3 ER), 5 H, 1 BB, 7 Ks, 1 WP) demonstrated excellent stuff as usual, though the Angels got to him with two doubles and a homer in his third inning of work. This is the first time he’s been asked to pitch more than three innings since his 2021 DSL days. Dominican Summer League Action (write-ups courtesy of colleague Mass Haas) Final: DSL Brewers #2 Squad 4, DSL Cardinals 2 Box Score / Game Log Any win over a Cardinals team is fun, STL only has one DSL team. Down by a 2-1 score entering the bottom of the 7th in this nine-inning affair, the Cerveceros Dos plated three to take a lead they would not relinquish. The runs scored on a line drive double, a fielder's choice, and a sacrifice fly. Of the four teenage pitchers who threw for the victors, three were making their professional debuts, including still-16-year-old starting RHP Melvin Hernandez out of Nicaragua. Venezuelan native Carlos Maurera and Dominican-born Lenin Mendez, both 18-year-old RHP's, like Hernandez, threw well. The three combined for 6.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 11K - nice! Winning pitcher Maurera also stranded all three runners he inherited from second-year pro David Dominguez. Dominguez walked four, hit a batter, and threw three wild pitches in his 2.1 innings. At the plate: Leadoff man 16-year-old Dominican native Roderick Flores notched his first pro hit. Flores also walked three times. 17-year-old switch-hitting Venezuelan SS Filippo Di Turi, with $1.3M in his pocket (well, not literally, at least we don't think so), had two hits including the big 7th inning double that tied things at 2-2. Three-hole hitter CF Antony Gomez was the 4th highest bonus pool signing back in January, the 17-year-old Dominican inked for a cool $600,000. 17-year-old switch-hitting 3B Luis Lameda, another Venezuelan infielder, was the 6th highest January bonus signing at $320,000. He singled twice and walked 1.207 OPS through his first three games. Did we say infielders in the Crew system tend to be Venezuelans? Another still-16-year-old, drafted as (of course) a shortstop but playing second base here, Pedro Ibarguen, walked and singled. Finally, as we highlight six of the lineup spots today, the international variety continued at the bottom of the order as 17-year-old LF Danny Puerta hails from Colombia. 86 degrees, sunny, calm wind. Because always. Final: DSL Brewers #1 Squad 9, DSL Guardians Blue 3 Box Score / Game Log Whoo-hoo, undefeated at 3-0 and a plus-13 run differential. Print those playoff tickets. Unlike the well-played partner game on the island today, this one was one of those "oh, this is rookie ball" contests. Thankfully, the Crew kids played the relatively clean side of the game. Pro debut for 17-year-old RH starter Eric Prado, who allowed two runs in the first but then tossed two scoreless. 2nd-year-pro LHP Jose Meneses, who signed out of Venezuela for just $10,000, grabbed the win with three scoreless frames (5 K, 1 BB). To close things out, 16-year-old Nicaraguan RHP Saul Sanchez was awarded a save in his pro debut - 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K - sweet, keep that ball and give it to Mom and Dad! Leadoff SS Kevin Ereu is the big $1.4M signing, but his lone contribution here was an RBI groundout in the three-run 9th inning. LH-hitting Yophery Rodriguez (top $1.5M Crew signing out of the Dominican Republic) walked five (!) times before being called out on strikes in the 9th. He'll be 17 years old all season. Did we say World Tour? Catcher Yannic Walther is the Germany native (backstory). Have a pro debut, RF Brian Sanchez! Triple, single, two walks. Mixed adventures on the basepaths, though, check the box. Finally, another pro debut, and another switch-hitter. 17-year-old first baseman Jhon Bencosme of the D.R. walked in three plate appearances. Low-A Carolina trails their home series against Fayetteville 2-1, but has solid RHP Logan Henderson (2.25 ERA with 18 Ks in 12 IP) ready to stifle the opposition tonight. SS Gregory Barrios has an .826 OPS over his last 14 games (60 PAs).

AA Biloxi is tied 1-1 in their series in Mississippi, with RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez (3.72 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 12.1 K/9 in 48.1 IP) looking to bounce back from a difficult last outing. SS Freddy Zamora returned from injury yesterday and continues his strong season at the plate (.777 OPS in 150 PAs).

RHP Jacob Misiorowski (3.04 ERA, 0.83 WHIP, 15.5 K/9 in 26.2 IP) makes his High-A debut tonight at West Michigan, as Wisconsin seeks to increase its series lead to 3-0. 3B Ben Metzinger has hit safely in 7 of his last 8 games.

Really awesome to see this after Campbell’s initial struggles with the promotion to AAA. His confidence has likely done a 180 from where it was just a week ago. Maybe he’s proving he belongs, similar to Weston Wilson in 2021. Now we just need Jon Singleton to find that next gear where he’s situated.

The Low-A Mudcats also play a doubleheader today, with their games at home against Fayetteville. 20-year old RHP Quinton Low (2.16 ERA with 15 Ks in 8.1 IP) starts the opening game. 1B Jesus Chirinos returns to the lineup for the first time since leaving last Thursday’s contest early.
