Cool. Box score was a mess the whole game. Happy if it was Gray breaking out of a slump in a big way. Box score also added a 10th inning run for Cedar Rapids, while taking away one of their hits. One of those days, I guess.

Sort of thing I'd totally ignore if I was the mayor, governor, senator, assemblyman. Leaked conveniently close to other news on taxpayers picking up cost of planned improvements, so simply feels too coordinated. Process is already underway to consider repairs and how to pay for it. MLB is like the guy at work checking on the task you're already doing, adding zero value.

That's a solid 4-1 extra inning win for Wisconsin. Felt like they were in control the whole way, just needing one of the Brown-Moore cycles to pay off. Cornielle, Brady, Morales and Jordan limited the Kernels to 4 hits. Oh, and yes it was Robert Moore with the 3-run blast in the 10th inning. Progress!!

And INF Tommy Troy of Stanford is at 1.205 OPS, 13 HRs, 26 BB vs. 29 Ks. While C Kyle Teel of Virginia has a 1.148 OPS, 11 HRs, 27 BB vs. 30 Ks. I guess we still have INF Brayden Taylor of TCU to fall back on: 1.018 OPS, 18 HRs, 45 BB vs. 47 Ks. Of course, we'll probably go an entirely different direction.

Wisconsin controlled this game from start to finish, grabbing a 5-1 lead by the 3rd inning and responding to the Kernels’ attempted comeback by adding runs in three of the last four frames. We greatly appreciate this road highlight of SS Eric Brown Jr. (4-for-5, HR, 3 RBIs, SB) crushing a ball. Three Quick Strikes: Of 12 hits, seven came from Brown and C Matt Wood (3-for-5, 3 RBIs), who also combined to drive in six runs. Cedar Rapids certainly had opportunities (2-for-14 with RISP), but starting RHP Tyler Woessner (5 2/3 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 5 BB, 6 Ks) and the bullpen were effective in stranding 11 Kernels. RHPs Taylor Floyd and Max Lazar conceded two runs, but also K’d seven batters in three innings of work. Being effective in High-A ball since 2021, it feels like it’s time for Floyd to try out AA ball again. Wednesday’s outlook: After some rough outings and a lot of bad luck (.389 BABIP against), RHP Alexander Cornielle needs a bounce back game in his start today. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Down East 9, Carolina 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Mudcats Waste Early Lead in 9-5 Loss This series opener felt like two games in one, with Carolina grabbing a 3-0 lead by the 5th inning, then being outscored 9-2 thereafter, but it only counts as one game in the standings, unfortunately allowing Down East to move into first place in the division. Three Quick Strikes: It was yet another smooth sailing game for 2022 fifth round draft selection RHP Will Rudy (5 IP, 0 R, 5 H, 2 BB, 7 Ks), who lowered his ERA to 0.93 after four starts and raised his strikeout rate as well, exiting with a 3-0 lead. After 3B Luke Adams (1-for-2, double, walk, RBI, SB, CS) doubled to score 2B Jheremy Vargas (2-for-5, 2 doubles), the game went entirely downhill. Adams was caught stealing and exited after one more inning in the field, so we’ll keep an eye on his status. When healthy, the team likes RHP Miguel Guerrero (2 IP, 5 R) to get to about 40 pitches, but those last 12 pitches were costly in this game, with three batters reaching to start the 8th inning, each of which scored. RHP Yerlin Rodriguez (2 IP, 4 R) also struggled in just his 3rd game of the season. Intriguing RHP Will Rudy (1.26 ERA, 0.77 WHIP, 8.2 K/9 in 14.1 IP) makes his 4th start of the year tonight. The youngest players on the team (CF Luis Lara, 3B Luke Adams) have the highest OPS' on the roster (.788, .757, respectively).

The High-A Timber Rattlers, owners of a 7-game losing streak, are on the road this week to take on Twins' affiliate Cedar Rapids. RHP Tyler Woessner (2.52 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, 7.8 K/9 in 35 2/3 IP) gets the first chance to snap the skid. C Darrien Miller is absent from the lineup for the 6th time in 7 games, as C Matt Wood (.273 AVG, 724 in 25 PAs since promotion) maximizes his opportunities.

AAA Nashville hosts Cubs' affiliate Iowa this week, with RHP Janson Junk (3.86 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 6.7 K/9 in 35 IP) indeed getting the opening game start (instead of a recall by the Brewers for Thursday's spot start). One-time Olympic speed skater 2B Eddy Alvarez leads the team in OBP (.407) and stolen bases (11).

I hope that this works out swimmingly. That said, it feels like a sad, token gesture that will ultimately be pointless while costing scarce funds. I'll admit that Teheran's recent run of form in the Pacific Coast League wasn't necessarily terrible (Last 21.2 IP since April 27: 3.74 ERA, 1.48 adjusted WHIP (including HBPs), 9.6 K/9, .718 OPS against, on a .333 BABIP), but it doesn't suggest to me that he should be starting any MLB games, especially for our Brewers. I'd have rather seen us call up RH reliever Thyago Vieira, who seems like he's actually throwing at an MLB-caliber level, going with a Bryse Wilson-led bullpen game when necessary, and adding an extra starter for AAA Nashville. Nonetheless, welcome Mr. Teheran. I hope you have an excellent run with the Brewers.

Maybe the Bush and Lauer situations will help the brass be more proactive/adamant in the future about shutting players with troubling velocity dips down early.

Thanks for this. So Wiemer's .259 BABIP appears in large part due to his terribly low line drive rate. Shoot!!!! But Adames' low BABIP (.245) is moreso the result of bad luck. They're probably wishing Tyrone Taylor could show any respectable level of offense, so they can give Wiemer a chance to re-boot in AAA. Alas... I guess all we can do is hope that Urias makes it back soon (or that Wiemer/Taylor somehow turns the corner despite that looking far-fetched at the moment), which would enable Anderson to play more right field (even if we love his 3B defense). Most of the AAA options (Hiura, Toro, Alvarez, Singleton) don't play CF or RF, which leaves us with Blake Perkins and Skye Bolt.

Jackson (1-for-3, HR, HBP, 2 RBIs) may only be sporting a .160 season average, but his hits are often impactful, collecting his fifth of homer of the year in the top of the 7th inning to give the Sounds their first lead at 3-2. He was also hit by pitch to lead off the top of the 10th inning, coming around to score a critical insurance run. 3B/1B Patrick Dorrian (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs) also came through with a solo homer off Glasgow and an RBI single to score the Manfred Man. If the Brewers are looking for right-handed bullpen relief, they may not need to look any further than 29-year old Brazilian fireman Thyago Vieira (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks; season ERA 0.00). Thrust into a difficult situation in the bottom of the 7th inning with nobody out and runners on second and third while clinging to a 3-2 lead, he managed to limit the damage to just an RBI groundout, then kept the Bulls off the board in the 9th inning as well, ultimately earning his second win of the year for his efforts. I suspect that Quero may have more pop than many of us realized: 21-year old starting RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez (6 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 3 BB, 5 Ks) bounced back from a rare bad start on Tuesday, as well as a difficult second inning in this game to deliver a quality start, although denied a win. 3B Tyler Black (2-for-4, triple, 2 walks, 2 SBs) also recovered from a mini-slump by reaching base four times. Three Quick Strikes: Perhaps unsurprisingly in light of their 7-game losing streak, the Shuckers found a way to nearly blow this game, squandering a 1st and 3rd, nobody out opportunity in the top of the 7th inning, then seeing the lead frittered away with RHPs Cam Robinson and Zach Vennaro allowing five runs (four earned) and RHP Robbie Baker (1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 2 Ks) being tagged with a blown save. The team then wasted another 1st and 3rd opportunity in the top of the 9th inning, this time with one out, before thankfully coming through in the 10th inning with a INF Zavier Warren walk, DH/OF Noah Campbell (2-for-6, 2 RBIs, SB) RBI single and Quero RBI groundout. Manager Mike Guerrero then finally brought in RHP James Meeker to close out a 3-up, 3-down 10th inning for his first save in 2023. Warren only managed a walk in four plate appearances, but his contribution was far greater, as SS Freddy Zamora exited after three innings, forcing Warren to play shortstop for the first time since his college days (2020), with INF Ethan Murray (last played Wednesday the 17th) apparently also unavailable. Let’s hope that Zamora and Murray are both healthy by Tuesday’s home game. In this game, Wisconsin fell behind 4-0 by the 3rd inning and 7-2 by the 7th inning, but kept battling enough to bring the potential game-tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 8th inning, although that opportunity went for naught (center fielder Terence Doston pop out, SS Eric Brown Jr. strikeout). Three Quick Strikes: Concern may rightfully be growing after 21-year old starting RHP Stiven Cruz (2 2/3 IP, 4 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 3 Ks) failed to make it past the 4th inning for his fourth consecutive contest. His strikeout rate per nine innings is down from 10.7 last year to 7.9 in 2023 and his strikeout/walk ratio is woefully down at 1.44 versus 4.54 in 2022. Sporting the lowest runs per game (3.74), batting average (.208), OBP (.298) and OPS (.642) in the 12-team Midwest League, I can at least see a glimmer of upside given their league-lowest .270 BABIP (vs. .298 league average). Looking for additional positives in the abyss, we can point to LHP Luis Amaya and RHP Bo Bowman (combined 5 1/3 innings scoreless), 2B Robert Moore with his fifth homer of 2023, C Matt Wood with two hits and an RBI, and Je’Von Ward with a single, walk and two runs batted in. Also, Moore and Brown got special kudos for giving extended autographs despite the rough week. There’s a big time highlight here: Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin heads on the road to take on Twins’ affiliate Cedar Rapids (22-17), with RHP Tyler Woessner (2.52 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, 7.8 K/9 in 35 2/3 IP) ready to win games on Tuesday and Sunday.
