  1. In a repeat of Tuesday’s results, the Carolina Mudcats were the sole affiliate to win on Wednesday night, dropping our minor league squads to a 2-6 record on the week thus far. Wednesday’s Game Balls go to Will Rudy, Jesus Chirinos, Adam Seminaris, Noah Campbell and Robert Moore. Transactions: RHP Lucas Erceg traded to the Oakland A’s (for cash) from AAA Nashville. This is one more twist in Erceg's epic journey to (hopefully, eventually) a long career in the Major Leagues OF Arbert Cipion assigned to High-A Wisconsin (last played September 9, 2022, also for Wisconsin) RHP Jake Cousins recalled to MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Durham 4, Nashville 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review the affiliate write-up as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Silenced in Durham The Sounds had the sole late game amongst Brewers’ affiliates on Wednesday, but their bats had already slept off by game time, generating just one hit and striking out 14 times in the shutout defeat. Three Quick Strikes: RHP Pedro Fernandez (3 1/3 IP, 4 R (2 ER), 4 H, 3 BB, 5 Ks) was relatively effective through the first two innings, but his night ended early at 66 pitches, after a solo homer in the 3rd inning and the first two batters reaching in the 4th inning (single, walk; both scored). The defense let him down with two errors and a passed ball. RHPs Tyson Miller and Thyago Vieira combined on 4 2/3 scoreless innings (1 hit, 2 BB, 6 Ks) to keep the Sounds in the ballgame throughout. 29-year old Vieira continues to throw 99mph consistently and has yet to allow an earned run in 2023 in 7 2/3 innings pitched. The Bulls tried to be generous, committing three errors of their own, walking six Sounds (including 1B Jon Singleton three times) and hitting one batter, but Nashville’s lumber couldn’t come through, stranding nine runners. Newly-added right fielder Michael Reed went 0-for-3 with a walk. Thursday’s outlook: I’m guessing Nashville will opt for a bullpen game (e.g. LHP Alex Claudio to open?), unless RHP Caleb Boushley is recalled early from the Development List. The Sounds needs a victory to get back to 2-1 in the series. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Chattanooga 2, Biloxi 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Seminaris Ties Career-High with Seven Innings, Shuckers Fall to Lookouts, 2-0 Losing a fourth straight game doesn’t get more frustrating than this, as the Shuckers went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position, leaving 13 men on base (vs. just four men left on base for the Lookouts): 1st inning: 2 of first 3 batters reached base, but didn’t score 3rd inning: 4 of first 5 batters reached base, but didn’t… 4th inning: 3 of first 4 batters reached base, but… 5th inning: 3 of first 4 batters reached base, … 6th inning: 2 of first 4 batters reached base… 9th inning: first 2 batters reached… Three Quick Strikes: LHP Adam Seminaris (7 IP, 2 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 5 Ks) collected his fourth loss of 2023, but the organization will be happy that he put together a second consecutive decent start after a rough commencement to the season. After right fielder Noah Campbell (1-for-1, 4 walks; .900 season OPS) singled to start the game, Chattanooga pitchers wanted nothing more to do with him, walking him the next four times up. Campbell also gunned down a runner at home to end the 7th inning. Is it time to test out 23-year old switch hitting Campbell in AAA ball? Left fielder Tristen Lutz returned from a month-long injury absence, going 1-for-5. However, both he and center fielder Jackson Chourio (1-for-5) stranded seven men on base during their at-bats. Thursday’s outlook: RHP Justin Jarvis (2.18 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 10.4 K/9 in 33 IP) gets the start, as the Shuckers need a victory to claw back to 2-1 in the series. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Quad Cities 9, Wisconsin 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Rattlers Drop Decision to Quad Cities The River Bandits were a bit relentless in this game, outhitting Wisconsin thirteen to eight and going 4-for-21 with runners in scoring position, stranding a whopping 16 baserunners. They also stole six bases and weren’t caught even once (troubling for C Darrien Miller, whose defensive development is a major focus). The Timber Rattlers’ loss was their third in a row. Check out the video highlights as compiled by the Wisconsin’s excellent media team. We’ve also got another Chris Mehring and Kyle Lobner post-game podcast for your listening pleasure, including comments on 1B Ernesto Martinez (exited early with knee tenderness), Matt Wood and others from Manager Joe Ayrault. Three Quick Strikes: Starting RHP Tyler Woessner (4 1/3 IP, 1 R, 6 H, 3 BB, 7 Ks) dealt with more traffic than usual but limited the damage, ultimately exiting early in the 5th inning after reaching 87 pitches. LHP Karlos Morales managed to strand two inherited runners in that 5th inning, but then conceded three runs of his own in the pivotal 6th inning, as the 7th-year minor leaguer was tagged with the loss. In all, the bullpen of Morales, Ryan Brady, Michele Vassalotti and Brandon Jordan conceded eight runs (five earned) in 4 2/3 IP. 2B Robert Moore (2-for-5, 2 doubles, 2 RBIs) is not yet out of his hitting slump (.182 season AVG), but he was clutch in the 7th inning, doubling in a run and scoring on a ground out to cut the deficit to 6-5. Thursday’s outlook: RHP Alexander Cornielle (6.33 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 12.2 K/9 in 21 1/3 IP) will try to turn the tide for Wisconsin, who trail their home series 2-0 against Quad Cities. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 7, Kannapolis 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: First Place Mudcats Blank Ballers 7-0 Let’s be grateful for the Mudcats, who were the sole winning affiliate for the second day in a row, dominating the Cannon Ballers from start to finish in this game, including outhitting them 10 to 4 and not committing any errors (vs. two errors for Kannapolis). RHP Will Rudy (5 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks) managed to breeze through his five innings on just 62 pitches, as I’m sure excitement among Brewers’ brass grows regarding their 2022 5th round draft pick. He did not concede any extra base hits. Have a look at many beautiful strikeouts here and check out the Mudcats’ Twitter feed for the offensive highlights: Three Quick Strikes: Eight players in the lineup reached base two times, with 1B Jesus Chirinos (2-for-4, 4 RBIs) having his best game of 2023 as he rediscovers his stroke. It was also good to see left fielder Hedbert Perez (2-for-5, double) record a double and a single with no strikeouts. RHP Yerlin Rodriguez (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K) closed out the 9th inning in his first game since September 2, 2022, while Chase Costello (3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) was solid over three scoreless innings. 3B Luke Adams (1-for-3, double, walk, 2 RBIs) knows how to get on base (.397 season OPS, despite a .184 AVG that’s supressed by a .213 BABIP) and get in scoring position from there, stealing his 11th base in this game. SS Daniel Guilarte (1-for-4, walk, SB) also stole his 16th base while extending his on-base streak to 35 games (including five games last year). Thursday’s outlook: RHP Aidan Maldonado (4.00 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, 11.0 K/9 in 18 IP) and LHP Nate Peterson (3.04 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 12.2 K/9 in 23 2/3 IP) are scheduled start two ends of a doubleheader (with Carolina "hosting" one game on the road to make up for a prior rain-out), as the Mudcats seek a 4-0 series lead. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Good luck to all teams in their Thursday night contests, including the Mudcats doubleheader! 2. OF Michael Reed assigned to AAA Nashville from ACL Brewers RHP Jake Cousins recalled to MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville (replacing LHP Wade Miley, who went on the injured list) RHP Pedro Fernandez activated by AAA Nashville from Development List RHP JC Mejia activated by AAA Nashville from Development List
  3. OF Arbert Cipion assigned to High-A Wisconsin (last played September 9, 2022, also for Wisconsin)
  4. - RHP Yujanyer Herrera activated from Low-A Carolina’s 7-day injured list - OF Tristen Lutz activated by AA Biloxi from 7-day injured list - OF Lamar Sparks activated by AA Biloxi from 7-day injured list - OF Skye Bolt activated by AAA Nashville from 7-day injured list - RHP JB Bukauskas recalled by MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville - SS Filippo Di Turi assigned to DSL Brewers-1
  5. I don't think that Gray was really prepared for the level adjustment, then he ended up going 2-for-37 at Biloxi with just one walk. Hopefully OF Tristen Lutz is healthy and returning to the Shuckers lineup. Maybe we'll hear from Micah at some point. For now, I'll assume the nicks and injuries just became too much - missed 2 months in mid-2021, missed 3 months to conclude 2022 season, probably faced some new issue recently (last played 9 days ago). Hopefully he's on course to earning a university degree somewhere after being drafted in 2018 directly out of high school.
  6. RHP Trevor Megill recalled to MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville RHP Colin Rea optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers
  7. C Matt Wood promoted to High-A Wisconsin from Low-A Carolina RHP Yerlin Rodriguez assigned to Low-A Carolina (essentially being activated after 3 games in Low-A to end the 2022 season) OF Micah Bello retired (was playing at High-A Wisconsin) OF Joe Gray Jr. assigned to High-A Wisconsin from AA Biloxi 1B Jesus Chirinos assigned to Low-A Carolina from High-A Wisconsin C Jose Sibrian assigned to Low-A Carolina from High-A Wisconsin
  8. Thomas Pannone collected his first win, while Payton Henry and Andruw Monasterio homered for Nashville. Cameron Wagoner and Ryan Brady were terrific for Wisconsin, though they lost in 11 innings. Image courtesy of Biloxi Shuckers The 1-3 day meant that Biloxi (4-2) was the sole series winner, while each of Nashville, Wisconsin and Carolina had three wins and three losses on the week. Sunday’s Game Balls go to my wife, my mother (and all the amazing moms out there who lift us up), along with Thomas Pannone, Payton Henry, Blake Perkins, Cameron Wagoner and Ryan Brady, with an honorable mention to Andruw Monasterio. Transactions: Keston Hiura placed on the Nashville 7-day injured list retroactive to May 13 RHP Justin Yeager placed on AA Biloxi’s 7-day injured list Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 6, Gwinnett 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review the affiliate write-up as part of their Link Report routine: Nashville outlasts late Gwinnett rally to work a 6-5 victory in the series finale Nashville needed this victory to salvage a 3-3 series tie and looked in good shape until a rough 9th inning, barely holding on in front of 8,154 fans. Here’s Payton Henry’s (3-for-4, HR, double, 2 RBIs) first blast of 2023 and you can find more highlights at the Sounds’ Twitter feed: Three Quick Strikes: Blake Perkins (4-for-5, triple, two doubles) and Henry had their best games in a while and Andruw Monasterio (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBIs) continues his recent surge. LHP Clayton Andrews and RHP Jake Cousins were both solid in the ‘pen (combined 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K), while RHP Lucas Erceg and LHP Bennett Sousa allowed three unearned runs before closing it out. The Sounds’ starting rotation has been in flux since RHP Janson Junk and Colin Rea were called up to make Major League starts in mid-April, but it’s settling into two tiers: (i) Talented youngsters Junk and Robert Gasser; (ii) Crafty veterans Pannone (6 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 4 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks; lowers ERA to 2.04 in 17 2/3 IP), Caleb Boushley and Pedro Fernandez. Hot-hitting Keston Hiura went on the 7-day injured list (exited Friday’s game early after being picked off base), shifting the spotlight to 3B Abraham Toro (1-for-4, double, RBI) as the next position player up for possible promotion. In this game, Toro extended his on-base streak to 31 games, but also committed two errors to give him five on the season. Next week’s outlook: The Sounds (20-18) head out to take on Rays’ affiliate Durham (also 20-18). RHP Janson Junk (2.90 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 6.7 K/9 in 31 IP) is scheduled to start the series opener. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Rocket City 6, Biloxi 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Shuckers Threaten Late, Fall to Trash Pandas, 6-4, in Series Finale This tight 3-2 affair nearly got out of hand when RHP Cam Robinson (0 IP, 3 R, 2 H, 3 BB, 0 Ks) opened the 7th inning by throwing nine consecutive balls, ultimately failing to retire any of the five batters he faced. As such, it may be back-to-the-drawing-board for Mr. Robinson. Three Quick Strikes: Leading 6-2, Rocket City attempted to return the favor by allowing the first five Shuckers to reach base in the bottom of the 7th inning, before normally-reliable left fielder Noah Campbell (struck out looking) and center fielder Jackson Chourio (GIDP) were unable to knock in any more runs with the bases loaded in a 6-4 game. Chourio (1-for-4, double, RBI) did hit an RBI double to drive in Campbell in the 1st inning, then have a great catch in the top of the 9th inning. Prior to the game, we breezed a sigh of relief as 20-year old C Jeferson Quero (1-for-4; threw out 1 of 3 basestealers) returned to full action, despite exiting Friday’s game after three innings. Although the Shuckers committed two errors (SS Freddy Zamora, right fielder Joe Gray Jr.), they did manage to turn a nifty 4-2-3 double play in that troublesome 7th inning, with credit going to 2B Ethan Murray in particular. One of those errors led to an unearned run in the 3rd inning, thus tagging starting RHP Christian Mejias (5 IP, 3 R (2 ER), 3 H, 3 BB, 3 Ks) with the loss. Next week’s outlook: Biloxi (19-14) travels to face Reds’ affiliate Chattanooga (14-18) this week, with terrific RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez (1.88 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 12.9 K/9 in 28 2/3 IP) expected to start the opening game. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: South Bend 2, Wisconsin 1 (in 11 innings) Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Cubs Tip Rattlers in Eleven Innings More than perhaps any other pitcher in the organization, RHP Cameron Wagoner (5 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks; lowering ERA to 9.24) needed a bounce-back performance and he did just that on Sunday. One would have hoped that this spectacular play by 24-year old RHP Ryan Brady (3 IP, 1 Manfred Run (0 ER) 1 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) in the 10th inning would spark the offense to close out a series win, but alas Wisconsin ultimately went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position in a tough loss. Check out many more highlights from this Mother’s Day game as compiled by the Wisconsin media team. We’ve also got a 15-minute Chris Mehring, Kyle Lobner post-game podcast for your listening pleasure. Three Quick Strikes: Wisconsin’s sole run was a SS Eric Brown Jr. special in the bottom of the 8th inning: single, two stolen bases (giving him 15 on the year), scored on a fielder’s choice as South Bend threw home in a futile effort to nab the speedster. RHP Max Lazar (2 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) had a solid run of results coming in (1 ER in last 11 IP), but an opposite field triple tripped him up in this game. Unfortunately, Wisconsin failed to convert any of their late scoring opportunities: 1-on with nobody out in the 9th inning, Manfred man on with nobody out in the 10th inning, 2-on with nobody out in the 11th inning. Next week’s outlook: The Timber Rattlers (11-21) get to stay home, hosting Royals’ affiliate Quad Cities (12-21) this week. Opening game starter RHP Stiven Cruz (6.26 ERA in 23 IP) needs a rebound of his own after allowing 13 runs (9 earned) and 13 hits in his last two starts (five innings). Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Fredericksburg 6, Carolina 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Mudcats Drop Finale 6-3 in Error Filled Day As detailed in the game report, this was a mistake-filled finale for the Mudcats, including for normally-reliable C Matt Wood (two errors) and talented-but-frustrating RHP Jeison Pena (balk, wild pitch, error). The defense wasn’t all bad, however, as 2B Jadher Areinamo continued his terrific glove work on this fabulous 7th inning double play: Three Quick Strikes: Perhaps players started trying to do too much after Carolina squandered a bases loaded, nobody out opportunity in the bottom of the 6th inning while trailing 4-3. Credit the Fredericksburg defense for completing a 1-2-3 double play on struggling (at-the-plate) Areinamo (1-for-4; .223 AVG, .515 OPS) and then striking out 1B Jesus Parra (2-for-4, 2 doubles, 2 RBIs; .196 AVG, .564 OPS). Still trailing 4-3, Pena’s 8th inning included a leadoff walk, Wood committing catcher interference on an 0-2 pitch for one of his errors and a wild pitch. After a nice infield play (3B Luke Adams to Wood for one out) and a fly out, Pena nearly pulled off the scoreless escape, but instead threw past first base for a 2-run error that extended the Nationals’ lead to 6-3. Nine walks helped make up for the Mudcats’ limited hits (4-for-27), but Fredericksburg took a page from Carolina’s playbook in stealing five bases on Sunday (vs. one stolen base for the good guys). We’ll see if the Mudcats get some reinforcements before Tuesday (e.g. Is OF Luis Castillo healthy enough for his 2023 debut?), given that their active roster is down to 27 players (vs. the customary 30). Next week’s outlook: Load up the bus, as Carolina (18-13) heads to take on White Sox affiliate Kannapolis (also 18-13) this week. Although no starter has been listed, I’d expect RHPs Logan Henderson and Patricio Aquino to tag-team the opening game on Tuesday. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report! Three Quick Strikes: After principally mashing on low strikes last month, leftfielder Hiura (2-for-3, HR, 3 RBIs) has clearly reached another level of mastery over the past week, initially fouling off high strikes and now smacking them for hits to all fields. Having partially restored his value at the plate and shown at least some competency in left field, the organization has a major decision of whether to promote or trade Hiura. It was bullpen game from the get-go, with LHP Alex Claudio giving up a run in the 1st inning, then RHP Tyson Miller (3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 6 Ks) allowing another in the 2nd inning, after which the squad were lights out, striking out a season high 19 batters. LHP Clayton Andrews, RHP Jake Cousins and RHP Trevor Megill combined on five scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts. It appears that center fielder Monte Harrison’s (1-for-3, 2 SBs) initial struggles (errors, strikeouts) were truly a function of rust, as he’s really come around in all facets of late. He singled, stole two bases and scored on a SS Andruw Monasterio (1-for-3, SF, RBI; 9-game hitting streak) sacrifice fly for a key late insurance run. Friday’s outlook: RHP Caleb Boushley is on an excellent four-game stretch (2.21 ERA in 20 1/3 IP) and is scheduled to start the fourth game of this week’s series. Along with Biloxi’s twitter feed, catch some fun highlights and RHP Justin Jarvis’ (5 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 4 Ks; 2.18 season ERA) after-game interview here. Three Quick Strikes: After outhitting Rocket City 8-2 in a scoreless first 3 2/3 innings of the opening game of the doubleheader, Zavier Warren (2-for-6, HR, HBP, 5 RBIs) came through with the 2-run blast in the bottom of the 4th inning to give Jarvis the only runs required. This was easily LHP Adam Seminaris’ (5 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 7 Ks) best game of the season, facing only 18 batters in five terrific innings and earning his second victory in the process. Although Jarvis left the opening game after only 79 pitches, it was great to see RHP Justin Yeager make his first appearance since an injury exactly one month ago. The flamethrower faced four batters, walking one and striking out one in the 6th inning. Friday’s outlook: RHP Tobias Myers gets the ball as Biloxi aims to clinch the series win early tonight. Myers needs better luck than his last two starts (8 IP, 8 R, 10 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 12 Ks). Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 3, South Bend 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Fernández Hits Late Homer to Send Rattlers to Victory Be sure to check out the highlights from the Timber Rattlers’ terrific media team. Down 1-0 with 2-on, 1-out in the bottom of the 7th inning, one could not help but wonder how the Timber Rattlers might squander the chance to break their 8-game losing streak and claw a game back against the Cubs. Just listen to the joy and relief in announcer Chris Mehring’s voice when center fielder Eduarqui Fernandez (2-for-3, HR, 3 RBIs) hammered this 1-2 pitch over the wall for a 3-run lead. Three Quick Strikes: The pressure on the pitching staff is immense when your offense is in the doldrums, so give credit to RHP Tyler Woessner (5 1/3 IP, 1 R, 8 H, 2 BB, 3 Ks) for battling through to limit South Bend to only one run. This is the best performance we’ve seen from LHP Russell Smith, who retired all six batters, five of them via strikeout in earning a deserved win. Credit as well goes to LHP Justin King (0.00 season ERA) and RHP Bo Bowman (fifth save). Left fielder Terence Doston may be a slap-hitter at this point in his development, but he’s also a gifted athlete, stealing two bases and throwing out a runner trying for third as key contributions. Friday’s outlook: RHP Alexander Cornielle (5.29 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, 11.1 K/9 in 17 IP) gets the start, as Wisconsin looks to square the series 2-2 tonight. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 4, Fredericksburg 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Rudy Gets First Career Win in 4-3 Carolina Victory Similar to the Sounds, Carolina grabbed an early lead and held on, thus avoiding a third straight loss against mediocre Fredericksburg (10-18 record). Three Quick Strikes: Seeing RHP Will Rudy (5 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 2 Ks) in action has been well worth the wait. Drafted in July 2022, we’ve only now gotten to see the 5th round selection out of Cal Poly Pomona in two starts over the past week (congrats to him on turning 22 years old and earning his first victory!). He only needed 65 pitches to cover five innings in this game. It took him 22 games into the season, but right fielder Jace Avina (2-for-3, HR, walk, 2 RBIs, SB) finally had a multi-hit game, reaching base three times and extending the team’s lead from 2-1 to 4-1 with his 2-run shot in the 5th inning. The game nearly fell apart in the top of the 6th inning, as the first five Nationals reached base against RHP Jeferson Figueroa, cutting the lead to 4-3 with the bases loaded and nobody out. However, Figueroa bore down to strike out the next two batters (the second on a full count) before RHP Chase Costello (3 1/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks) escaped the inning (another K). Costello ultimately retired 10 of the 12 batters he faced in a well-earned save (his first). Friday’s outlook: RHP Aidan Maldonado (3.77 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 10.7 K/9 in 14 1/3 IP) is scheduled for his third start (sixth appearance), with Carolina needing a win to even the series 2-2.
