RHP Ryan Brady promoted to AA Biloxi from High-A Wisconsin INF/OF Eddy Alvarez transferred to Development List by AAA Nashville on 7/1 and re-activated today -
Logan Henderson struck out eight in his first win for the Mudcats, with Luis Lara providing early offense. Joe Gray Jr. and others supported Jacob Misiorowski in Wisconsin’s victory. Nashville lost an extra inning contest and Jeferson Quero’s homer wasn’t enough for Biloxi. Image courtesy of Biloxi Shuckers All affiliates are back in action on Monday for a special set of “Independence Day Eve” games. Transactions: OF Hendry Mendez activated from High-A Wisconsin’s 7-day injured list LHP Nate Peterson activated from Low-A Carolina’s 7-day injured list RHP Pedro Fernandez activated from AAA Nashville’s 7-day injured list RHP Luis Contreras promoted to AAA Nashville from AA Biloxi Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Memphis 9, Nashville 8 (in 10 innings) Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review the affiliate write-up as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Drop Dramatic 10-Inning Contest to Redbirds Nashville’s five-game win streak came to an end in an entertaining back-and-forth affair in front of just 2,860 fans in Memphis (92 degrees, clear skies, wind blowing out to center field – what gives, Redbird fans?). Starting RHP Pedro Fernandez (5 IP, 5 R, 7 H, 2 BB, 1 K) was rusty after an injury sidelined him for 16 days, giving up three home runs in five innings and exiting down 5-3, but Nashville mounted comebacks via a three-run 7th inning (to lead 6-5) and two-run 9th inning to send the game to extra innings. Sounds’ Extras: Left fielder Keston Hiura (2-for-5, double, 3 RBIs) and 1B Abraham Toro had key RBI doubles in the comeback, with Toro knocking in the tying run with two outs in the top of the 9th inning. Eight of the nine lineup spots registered at least one hit, with 3B Mike Brosseau notching his fourth home run and 2B Josh VanMeter producing two singles and an RBI. After the Sounds went 3-up, 3-down in failing to bring home the ghost runner, RHP Luis Contreras was thrust into the pressure cooker in his first AAA action since May 5, giving up a walk-off single to the second batter of the frame. While RHPs Abner Uribe and Thyago Vieira were solid in the ‘pen (combined 3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks), RHP Peter Strzelecki (1 IP, 3 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 1 K) was not sharp in his first minor league outing since August 2022. On the Promotion Watch, center fielder Sal Frelick (2-for-4, walk) and DH/OF Tyrone Taylor (1-for-3, walk, HBP) both contributed, as they alternate center field duties from game-to-game. Monday’s outlook: Nashville’s already won the series (up four games to one), but RHP Caleb Boushley (4.63 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 7.4 K/9 in 72 IP) will try to make it a 5-1 week. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Mississippi 9, Biloxi 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Jeferson Quero Hits Team-Leading 12th Home Run in Loss to M-Braves Tied 2-2 after five innings, this game didn’t appear headed to blowout territory until starting RHP Christian Mejias (5 1/3 IP, 4 R, 7 H, 3 BB, 6 Ks was asked to extend himself beyond 91 pitches, ending his day with a double and a walk before handing over to struggling RHP Ryan Middendorf. Earlier, C Jeferson Quero (3-for-4, HR, RBI) had given Biloxi a 2-1 lead with his team-leading 12th homer of 2023: You’ll see a few more highlights at the Shuckers Twitter feed. Shuckers’ Extras: Middendorf (2 2/3 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 HBP, 2 Ks), still searching for his 2022 form, allowed three of the first four batters to reach as Mississippi grabbed a 5-2 lead and never looked back. Quero and SS Freddy Zamora (2-for-4, RBI) had five of the Shuckers’ six hits, with the rest of the team going 1-for-24. RHP Cam Robinson’s nightmare 2023 continued with a three-run 9th inning. His AAA ERA this year was 6.75 and now his AA ERA is 10.91. Monday’s outlook: RHP TJ Shook (5.40 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, 11.3 K/9 in 36 2/3 IP) will make his third start of the season, as Biloxi needs a victory in the series finale to tie it up at three games apiece. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 5, Quad Cities 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Wisconsin Holds On for 5-4 Win at Quad Cities The Timber Rattlers started fast in support of starting RHP Jacob Misiorowski (4 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 HBP, 2 Ks, 1 WP), putting two runners in scoring position in the 1st inning, then plating five runs over the next two frames for an early 5-0 lead. Little did they know that they’d register zero hits over the next 5 2/3 innings, needing to hold off the River Bandits with pitching and defense to escape with a 5-4 victory and 3-2 series lead. Timber Rattlers’ Extras: Center fielder Joe Gray Jr. (2-for-5, 2 RBIs) and C Matt Wood (1-for-4, double, walk, 2 RBIs) had the big 2nd inning hits, each driving in two runs in that frame, before right fielder Hendry Mendez (1-for-4, HR, RBI) made his presence known with a solo shot to lead off the 3rd inning. This was 19-year old Mendez’s first game back with Wisconsin since a May 10 injury and he made solid contact all evening. RHPs Nick Merkel (3 1/3 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 0 BB, 4 Ks) and Sam Gardner (1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K) were up to the task of keeping Quad Cities at bay, with Gardner earning his second save since joining the Timber Rattlers exactly one month ago. Unsurprisingly, neither SS Eric Brown Jr. nor INF Eduardo Garcia was in the lineup after exiting games early on Saturday and Friday, respectively. Robert Moore manned shortstop and Jose Acosta played second base, with C Darrien Miller and OF Terence Doston likely the only position players available on the bench. We await news on the seriousness of injuries to either player and hope they’re only dealing with bruises. Monday’s outlook: RHP Cameron Wagoner (6.96 ERA, 1.66 WHIP, 7.0 K/9 in 54 1/3 IP) gets a second crack against the River Bandits this week, with Wisconsin seeking a win to claim the series four games to two. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 7, Down East 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Carolina Wins Second Straight 7-3 in Kinston Starting RHP Logan Henderson (5 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 8 Ks) and center fielder Luis Lara (3-for-4, walk, RBI) got back to their previous excellent form, with Henderson throwing a season-high 75 pitches to grab his first win of 2023 and Lara reaching base three times in the first four innings to help Carolina take a 4-1 early lead. The win was the Mudcats’ second in a row and they’ll get a chance to even the series on Monday. Mudcats’ Extras: Elder statesman (at 24 years old) C Jose Sibrian (2-for-4, double, HBP, 2 RBI) is now 12-for-his-last-34, opening the game’s scoring with a two-run double, while right fielder Jace Avina (1-for-4, HR, walk, 2 RBIs) came through with a two-run homer in the 9th inning to give the Mudcats some needed breathing room. LHP Nate Peterson (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks) returned for his first official game since being injured 31 days earlier, picking up nicely where Henderson left off. Usual contributors 3B Luke Adams and SS Gregory Barrios had a day to forget, however, going a combined 0-for-10 with five strikeouts (four Ks for Adams). Credit goes to left fielder Hedbert Perez for a 2-hit day, as well as 2B Jheremy Vargas (single, 2 walks) and 1B Jesus Chirinos (single, 2 walks, HBP) for reaching base three times and four times, respectively. RHP Jeison Pena entered in the bottom of the 8th inning with a 5-1 advantage and unfortunately struggled to hold it, allowing two full count walks and a single as the Wood Ducks made the contest competitive late. RHP Yerlin Rodriguez closed out the game with a scoreless 9th inning after Avina’s blast. Monday’s outlook: 19-year old RHP Yujanyer Herrera (4.47 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 7.4 K/9 in 48 1/3 IP) gets the call to try to even the series. Will this be the game where rehabbing OF Luis Castillo and 1B/C Tayden Hall return? We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Good luck in Monday’s special 7-game MILB slate! It’s been tough sledding for 3B/1B Zavier Warren at Biloxi this year: - April OPS - .600 - May OPS - .574 - June OPS - .488 But the .200 season BABIP suggests a LOT of bad luck. If INF Eduardo Garcia is sidelined for a bit (hopefully he’s not), maybe Warren could spend a few weeks mashing for Wisconsin before returning to Biloxi.

2023 Minor League Transaction Thread
Ro Mueller replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
- OF Eduarqui Fernandez placed on High-A Wisconsin’s 7-day injured list, retroactive to 6/29. -
Stiven Cruz and Janson Junk were both stellar for Wisconsin and Nashville respectively, while Tyler Black had two key triples for Biloxi and Cam Devanney smacked two homers for Nashville. Carolina and the DSL squads struggled. Image courtesy of Biloxi Shuckers - Tyler Black Transactions: INF Brice Turang recalled to MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville INF Luis Urias optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers OF Tyler Naquin placed on AAA Nashville’s 7-day injured list OF Tyrone Taylor sent on rehab assignment to AAA Nashville C Payton Henry suspended for his part in the mini-brawl against Norfolk on Sunday Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 5, Memphis 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review the affiliate write-up as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Roll Redbirds For Third Straight Win 27-year old RHP Janson Junk (7 IP, 1 ER, 6 H – all singles, 2 BB, 6 Ks) delivered his third straight quality start and hit a season-high with six strikeouts, leaving the game with a comfortable 4-1 lead and earning his fifth victory of 2023. The offense was largely provided by 26-year old SS Cam Devanney (2-for-3, 2 HRs, SF, 4 RBIs), whose solo homer gave Nashville a 2-1 lead in the 2nd inning, followed by a two-run shot in the bottom of the 6th inning to push the advantage to 4-1. Sounds’ Extras: Already on the 40-man roster, Junk may not be a fireballer (just 47 Ks in 75 2/3 IP this year), but he’s getting the job done for the Sounds (3.69 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, team-lead in innings pitched). Passed over by 29 teams in last offseason’s pitcher-heavy Rule 5 draft, Devanney’s making an even stronger case this time around with a 1.057 OPS in his last 82 plate appearances, after starting the year slowly due to injury. MLB call-up watch: 1B Keston Hiura and 3B Abraham Toro each collected two singles and a walk, while center fielder Sal Frelick had a single in four at-bats. Rehabbing Tyrone Taylor manned right field for his first action since June 1st, going 0-for-5 but contributed by throwing out a runner to end the 1st inning. And RHP Abner Uribe (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K) topped 100mph five times in his one inning of fabulous relief work, while RHP JB Bukauskas (1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K) also pitched a scoreless 9th inning. Friday’s outlook: If he can replicate his last outing (4 2/3 scoreless innings five days ago) with a solid start tonight, RHP Jason Alexander will certainly strengthen his case to be added to the 40-man MLB roster when he comes off the 60-day injured list shortly. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 7, Mississippi 6 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Tyler Black Triples Twice, Drives in Three in Shuckers' 7-6 Comeback Win 3B Tyler Black (2-for-4, 2 triples, 3 RBIs) tripled early as Biloxi built a 4-0 lead, then tripled again in the bottom of the 7th inning to tie the game 6-6 after the Shuckers had fallen behind 6-4. He then scored on a wild pitch for what proved to be the winning run. You’ll see plenty more video highlights at the Shuckers Twitter feed. Shuckers’ Extras: Relative to his usual outings, starting RHP Justin Jarvis (4 2/3 IP, 3 R (2 ER), 5 H, 3 BB, 8 Ks, 1 WP) struggled a bit and exited after reaching 99 pitches in the top of the 5th inning. That said, he collected another eight strikeouts and became the third Southern League pitcher to reach 90 Ks in the season’s first half (likely aided by the extra tacky baseballs being experimented with). RHP Robbie Baker (2 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 4 Ks) helped Jarvis escape the 5th inning by delivering a strikeout, then covered an additional 1 2/3 innings, though conceded a homer to Drew Lugbauer (26 years old; .996 OPS – c’mon Braves, promote the man). After RHP Zach Vennaro struggled (1/3 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 0 H, 2 BBs, 2 HBPs, 1 K), LHPs Luis Amaya (Biloxi debut) and Ryan Middendorf were terrific in relief, combining on two scoreless innings, with Amaya striking out three batters. Center fielder Jackson Chourio (2-for-3, walk, RBI) also had a solid game in reaching base three times. Friday’s outlook: 28-year old RHP James Meeker (2.41 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, 11.3 K/9 in 37 1/3 IP) is due to make his second straight start, after 16 relief appearances to commence the year. He’s reached 56 and 54 pitches in his last two outings, as we try to decipher whether this is an actual experiment (i.e. converting him to a starter) or simply a case of Manager Mike Guerrero managing limited starting pitching depth. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 3, Quad Cities 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Cruz, Brown Lead Rattlers to Fourth Straight Win 21-year RHP Stiven Cruz (5 IP, 0 R, 2 H – both singles, 1 BB, 8 Ks) was back in prime form, cruising through five innings by pounding the zone effectively (48 strikes in 73 pitches) and earning his third win of 2023. He lowered his season ERA to 6.59 in what has been a rather frustrating year thus far. Cruz left the game with a 1-0 lead, which SS Eric Brown Jr. (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs) added to in the 8th inning with his third home run of 2023, a 2-run shot. From there, Wisconsin held on for dear life, as RHP Brannon Jordan (2/3 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 0 Ks) was not his usual sharp self, handing over to RHP Tanner Shears (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 0 Ks, 1 WP) who closed out the game with a bunt force out and ground ball double play. Timber Rattlers’ Extras: The middle innings were covered by RHP Alexander Cornielle (2 1/3 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 K), in his first appearance in 25 days. He was limited to 40 pitches, though the team will be thrilled to have effective starter available. The Timber Rattlers only notched five hits and walked twice, with no player reaching base twice. 1B Ernesto Martinez (1-for-3, RBI) had a key game, however, singling in a run in the 3rd inning, then gunning down the lead runner at third base for the first out of the bottom of the 9th inning. River Bandit Manager and ex-Brewers infielder Brooks Conrad did not agree with the call and was ejected. The eight strikeouts were a season high for Cruz, lifting his season K/9 rate to 8.0 (vs. 10.7 last year), which hopefully bodes well for future success. We also note that DH/C Matt Wood was back in the starting lineup, despite leaving Wednesday’s game in the 3rd inning. Friday’s outlook: 23-year old RHP Tyler Woessner (2.70 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 8.1 K/9 in 66 2/3 IP), who has been the team’s top starting pitcher, is scheduled to start as Wisconsin seeks a 3-0 series lead. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Down East 5, Carolina 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Mudcats Held to Two Hits Again in Loss to Wood Ducks Two singles and zero walks for the offense won’t win many games, as Carolina has now dropped six of its past seven games. Mudcats’ Extras: With almost no offense to speak of, RHP Will Rudy needed to be perfect, but was instead his reasonable, solid self: 6 IP, 3 R (all coming across with two outs in the 4th inning), 4 H, 0 BB, 4 Ks, 2 WPs. Rudy’s season ERA is now 3.40. Hard-throwing 20-year old RHP Jesus Rivero (2 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) made his debut in full season affiliate ball, notching a strike out against his first batter and ending the 7th inning by inducing a ground ball double play. His second inning of work was not as kind (double, single, walk, two stolen bases), though he did strike out another two batters. Left fielder Hedbert Perez and 1B Jesus Parra collected the two singles, which matched the number of shift violations which the Mudcats were penalized for with automatic balls. Friday’s outlook: Almost-21 year old (his birthday is tomorrow) RHP Alexander Vallecillo (3.33 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 11.1 K/9 in 24 1/3 IP) is scheduled to take the hill as Carolina needs a victory to cut the series deficit to 2-1. Dominican Summer League Action Final: DSL Dodgers Mega 5, DSL Brewers #2 Squad 1 Box Score / Game Log Our Dos youngsters fell to their fifth straight loss in this 7-inning contest, dropping their record to 7-11. Starting 16-year old RHP Melvin Hernandez (4 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 6 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks, 2 WPs; season ERA 1.93) put in a respectable performance, conceding only one earned run in spite of the six hits and exiting with his team down 2-1. However, a 4-for-23 day at the plate with one double and one walk was not enough to get the job done. Key signing 17-year old 2B/SS Filippo Di Turi (2-for-3; season OPS .864) singled twice, but was caught stealing and also picked off base. 19-year old C Eric Martinez (1-for-3, double; season OPS .781) notched the double and scored the team’s only run. Final: DSL White Sox 6, DSL Brewers #1 Squad 1 Box Score / Game Log The young Uno men dropped their third straight game, falling to a 10-8 record thus far. Similar to their DSL-2 brethren, 18-year old starting RHP Jose Meneses (4 IP, 1 R, 7 H, 2 BB, 4 Ks; season ERA 2.70) navigated traffic to make the game competitive, but the offensive performance was lacking – e.g. 3-for-31 at the plate. Meneses exited with the game tied 1-1. That said, I’m blaming lightning at least in part for this loss, as 17-year old RHP Eric Prado’s (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 Ks) relief outing was cut short after just one inning due to a one hour and five minute game delay. Prado had thrown five scoreless innings in his last appearance (see video from prior outings below). 20-year old RHP Yonawil Florimon walked four batters and threw a wild pitch in two innings of work, though he only conceded one run and zero hits. The game really got away due to a four-run 8th inning off of 22-year old RHP Roman Perez, who walked three, hit one batter and threw five wild pitches in just 2/3rds of an inning. Offensively, the team did manage to collect 7 walks, but went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. 17-year old center fielder Yophery Rodriguez (2-for-4, double) was the bright spot, doubling and singling, though he was caught stealing. Transactions: INF Brice Turang recalled to MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville INF Luis Urias optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers OF Tyler Naquin placed on AAA Nashville’s 7-day injured list OF Tyrone Taylor sent on rehab assignment to AAA Nashville C Payton Henry suspended for his part in the mini-brawl against Norfolk on Sunday Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 5, Memphis 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review the affiliate write-up as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Roll Redbirds For Third Straight Win 27-year old RHP Janson Junk (7 IP, 1 ER, 6 H – all singles, 2 BB, 6 Ks) delivered his third straight quality start and hit a season-high with six strikeouts, leaving the game with a comfortable 4-1 lead and earning his fifth victory of 2023. Adding LHP Thomas Pannone to the 40-man MLB roster at this time is interesting, given that it’s now full and we may need to add rehabbing RHP Jason Alexander and/or LHP Justin Wilson soon. But who knows? Maybe Tyrone Taylor, Jake Cousins, Bennett Sousa, Ethan Small and/or Eric Lauer would be moved to the 60-day injured list to create space.

Nine stolen bases against our ACL Brewers with nobody caught. And zero stolen bases for the good guys. Ouch. That might keep C Satchell Norman (.929 OPS), who’ll turn 21 next month, in ACL ball longer than I was thinking. We’ll see. I’m guessing the Mudcats will get OF Luis Castillo, 1B/C Tayden Hall and OF Reidy Mercado added from the ACL shortly. Which will probably push Jose Sibrian up to Wisconsin, where OF Hendry Mendez also looks ready to return from injury.

Cool. In my mind he was not going to be able to heal, complete rehab work and get into enough of a groove to help the MLB club this season. Would be wonderful to have Ashby back.

Jacob Misiorowski struggled a bit, but Joe Gray Jr. and the offense helped him out with 12 runs on 16 hits. Jason Alexander and Josh VanMeter led Nashville to a win, while Biloxi and Carolina fell on Sunday. Image courtesy of Biloxi Shuckers - Tyler Black For the week, Nashville, Biloxi and Wisconsin each tied their home series 3-3, while Carolina lost its home series 4-1. Transactions: OF Lamar Sparks activated from AA Biloxi’s 7-day injured list RHP Jason Alexander’s rehab shifted to AAA Nashville from AA Biloxi Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 3, Norfolk 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review the affiliate write-up as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Cap First Half With Win Over Tides Rehabbing RHP Jason Alexander (4 2/3 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 4 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks) re-discovered his early 2022 form and 2B Josh VanMeter (1-for-1, HR, 2 walks, HBP, RBI) homered while reaching base four times, leading Nashville to a chippy win over Norfolk in a game which saw three ejections. You’ll find more video highlights at the Nashville Sounds Twitter feed. Sounds’ Extras: After Alexander conceded 7 runs and 14 hits over 7 2/3 IP in his three preceding rehab starts for ACL Brewers and AA Biloxi, I certainly did not expect him to dominate league-leading Norfolk, but he did just that, walking none and limiting hard contact (four singles, lots of ground balls). Though our eyes have been fixated on center fielder Sal Frelick (0-for-4, no Ks in his first game back since a scary foul ball injury on Thursday), 1B Keston Hiura (1-for-3, HBP, 2 Ks) and SS Brice Turang (1-for-3, double, walk, RBI; hitting streak up to 12 games), we need to take note of VanMeter. The 28-year old left-handed hitter only played three games in April, then rehabbed for five games in ACL ball in mid-June and has quickly found his footing in four post-rehab games with Nashville: 3-for-8, 3 homers, 6 walks, 1 HBP, just 2 Ks. He’s played in the majors each of the past four seasons and clearly has his sights set for a return. The game went sideways in the bottom of the 6th inning, as Tides’ fireballer Darwinzon Hernandez hit VanMeter and 3B Patrick Dorrian with pitches that were nowhere near the plate. Each of C Payton Henry (who was on base), Dorrian and Hernandez were sent home early in the ensuing scuffle. LHP Darrell Thompson (1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K) and RHP Abner Uribe (1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) were solid in middle inning relief work, with Uribe entering just after the mini-brawl and throwing several 100mph pitches at and above the eyebrows, though thankfully they were over the plate. Next week’s outlook: Nashville (39-36) travels to face Cardinals’ affiliate Memphis (40-34), with all full season affiliate series running from Wednesday-Monday this time around. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Chattanooga 10, Biloxi 6 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Tyler Black Reaches 40 Stolen Bases in Shuckers Loss to Lookouts The Lookouts jumped on starting RHP Christian Mejias (2 IP, 5 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 1 K) with four runs in the 1st inning and remained relentless thereafter, scoring five more runs off of RHP TJ Shook (4 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 4 Ks) and LHP Nick Bennett (1 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks). Biloxi didn’t wilt, however, scoring in each of the first three innings and narrowing the game to 7-6 with a C Jeferson Quero (1-for-3, HR, walk, RBI) moonshot over the lights in the bottom of the 5th inning, his 10th of the year. Again, you’ll see a lot more video highlights at Biloxi’s Twitter feed. Shuckers’ Extras: 1B/C Wes Clarke (1-for-3, HR, walk, 2 RBIs) continues to show some potency, notching his 8th homer of 2023 with a solo shot in the 3rd inning. 2B Freddy Zamora (2-for-3, double, walk) and left fielder Tristen Lutz (2-for-4, RBI) also contributed four of the team’s seven hits. DH/3B Tyler Black didn’t reach base via hit or walk, but did manage to steal his 40th base of the season after reaching on an error in the 1st inning. Unfortunately, he was caught stealing in the next frame for the fifth time. The team is clearly committed to giving Zamora more time at second base, where he’s started five of the past nine games, even forcing Felix Valerio over to third base in this contest for the first time this season. Trailing 10-6 in the bottom of the 8th inning, the Shuckers got one final chance to turn the tide, but unfortunately Lutz grounded into a double play to end a two-on, one-out threat. Next week’s outlook: After an extra day off on Tuesday, Biloxi (34-35) hosts Braves’ affiliate Mississippi (33-35). Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 12, Lansing 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Offense Pounds Sixteen Hits to Beat Lugnuts 12-4 As always with Timber Rattler home games, take some time to enjoy detailed video highlights and the post-game podcast. Starting his second game of the week, RHP Jacob Misiorowski (2 2/3 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 4 BB, 5 Ks) uncharacteristically struggled, conceding two doubles, two singles and four walks (including the final three batters, each after running counts full), but that strikeout capability to escape threats is something special. Thankfully, the Wisconsin offense picked him up with four runs in each of the 2nd and 3rd innings as the team built an 8-2 lead and never looked back. Timber Rattlers’ Extras: Every spot in the lineup collected at least one hit, with center fielder Joe Gray Jr. (3-for-4, triple, double, SF, 2 RBIs) leading the way with a 2nd inning triple, 3rd inning double, 4th inning single and 6th inning sacrifice fly, following up Saturday’s 2-homer, 6 RBI effort with aplomb. Each of RHPs Brannon Jordan (2 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 4 Ks) and Tanner Shears (1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 2 Ks) and LHP Luis Amaya (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 Ks) were solid in relief, with Jordan stranding three Misiorowski baserunners in a tense top of the 3rd inning. Two-hit games abounded in a fun series finale for 4,606 home fans: 2B Robert Moore, C Matt Wood, 3B Ben Metzinger, right fielder Eduarqui Fernandez, left fielder Terence Doston. 1B Ernesto Martinez also reached base three times (double, walk, HBP). Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin (28-39) hits the road to take on Royals’ affiliate Quad Cities (32-37), with the series commencing on Wednesday. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Lynchburg 3, Carolina 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Lara Homers in 3-1 Series Finale Loss to Lynchburg The final score was close, but the Hillcats really dominated in terms of opportunities, going 2-for-18 with runners in scoring position versus just 0-for-3 for Carolina, who appear to need an offensive infusion. Lynchburg led 3-0 after three innings. 18-year old center fielder Luis Lara (2-for-4, HR, RBI) appeared to be the team’s best hope for clawing back into the game thereafter, striking out on a pitch timer violation with a runner aboard in the 3rd inning, homering to lead off the 6th inning and singling to bring the potential game-tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 8th inning. Mudcats’ Extras: RHP Logan Henderson (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K) got the start, though was limited to one inning and 16 pitches after starting a game just five days earlier. I’ll put the concern-o-meter (regarding potential injury) at a 3 out of 10 for Mr. Henderson, while waiting to see if he makes a start in Carolina's upcoming series. That said, if Henderson’s start was abruptly cut short for whatever reason, it might explain why RHP Quinton Low (1 1/3 IP, 3 R, 1 H, 4 BB, 1 WP, 2 Ks) struggled so much in the 2nd inning, commencing with eight consecutive balls. Four tips of the cap to the four relievers who kept Lynchburg off the board over nearly seven innings to give the Mudcats a chance: RHPs Jeferson Figueroa, Will Childers, Jeison Pena and Shane Smith (combined 6 2/3 IP, 0 R, 6 H, 4 BB, 1 HBP, 2 WP, 7 Ks). Childers threw 76 pitches over his three innings of work. 3B Jheremy Vargas followed up Lara’s 8th inning single with a double to put the pressure on the Hillcats, but SS Jadher Areinamo flied out end that threat. C Jose Sibrian went 2-for-3, while right fielder Kay-Lan Nicasia took an early shower, having been ejected after a 4th inning ground out. Next week’s outlook: Carolina (34-32) stays in North Carolina, heading to Kinston to take on Wednesday to take on Rangers’ affiliate Down East (39-25). We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Good luck in the three Rookie level games on each of Monday and Tuesday, with full season affiliates resuming action on Wednesday, June 28. As Biloxi and Carolina were rained out, the organization was a combined 3-and-3 on a busy Thursday, with Nashville splitting its home doubleheader. Transactions: RHP Trevor Megill optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Game One Final: Nashville 7, Norfolk 1 (in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Game Two Final: Norfolk 3, Nashville 0 (in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review the affiliate write-up as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds, Tides Battle to Doubleheader Split The evening in Nashville started well, with LHP Thomas Pannone (6 2/3 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 2 BB, 10 Ks) striking out the first two hitters and left fielder Keston Hiura (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs) homering in his first at-bat in AAA ball since May 12. From there, Pannone didn’t need any more assistance, exiting at 98 pitches, one out shy of a complete-game (7-inning) victory. Unfortunately, the night cap was another matter entirely, with LHP Ethan Small (2 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 3 H, 2 BB, 0 Ks) making a spot start, the team falling behind 3-0 by the 3rd inning and the Sounds’ offense having only one hitter reach base over the final four innings. Sounds’ Extras: We’re anxiously awaiting word on the health of right fielder Sal Frelick, who exited in pain mid-at-bat in the 5th inning of the second game after fouling a ball off his knee. Let’s pray the absence, if any, is short-term. Let’s hold back before anointing Hiura the Brewers’ offensive savior, as he did strike out in his three subsequent at-bats. Other Sounds players contributing on offense included 3B Mike Brosseau (1-for-2, HR, HBP, 2 RBIs), right fielder Skye Bolt (3-for-4) and SS Brice Turang (2-for-6, 2 doubles, walk, 2 RBIs). RHP Abner Uribe (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks) and LHP Darrell Thompson (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 4 Ks) completed solid shifts in the second game. Catch the forum discussion on whether they simply needed some time to adjust to the non-tacky balls after being promoted from the Southern League Shuckers. If LHP Eric Lauer (temporary inactive list) or RHP Jason Alexander (struggled in last rehab start in AA) aren’t at Manager Rick Sweet’s disposal by Sunday, he’ll likely have to cobble together a bullpen game to complete the series. Friday’s outlook: RHP Janson Junk (4.23 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 5.7 K/9 in 61 2/3 IP) is the scheduled starter, as the Sounds seek a win to even the series 2-2. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Via the Shuckers’ website, rainout details: Shuckers-Lookouts Postponed on Thursday Due to Rain The Shuckers and Lookouts will immediately make up for the rainout with a Friday doubleheader, starting at 5:05pm Central Time. Friday’s outlook: Expect RHPs Justin Jarvis (3.32 ERA in 65 IP) and Tobias Myers (5.43 ERA in 59 2/3 IP) to lead Biloxi as they aim to double their 2-0 series lead. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Lansing 4, Wisconsin 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Rattlers End First Half with a Close Loss to Lansing We are absolutely spoiled for content when Wisconsin plays at home: Detailed video highlights 15-minute post-game podcast The Timber Rattlers led 2-0 after one inning and 3-2 by the 4th inning, but weren’t able to muster any offense thereafter, falling behind 2-1 in this week’s home series. That said, the 4,649 fans in attendance had to be excited to see 2022 first round pick SS Eric Brown Jr. (0-for-2, 2 walks, SB) back atop the lineup after a thumb injury. The sparkplug walked, stole his 23rd base and scored on a DH/C Darrien Miller (2-for-4, double, 2 RBIs) two-run double in the 1st inning, then walked again in the 2nd inning but was picked off. Timber Rattlers’ Extras: It was far from a masterpiece, but the team will be encouraged by RHP Stiven Cruz (5 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 4 BB, 3 Ks) limiting the damage after a rough 8-game stretch. RHP Max Lazar (3 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 1 K) took the tough luck loss despite another respectable performance. New Rattlers Pitching Coach Josh Spence (formerly Biloxi’s Bullpen Coach) will be considered a magician if he’s able to quickly straighten out Cruz (7.24 ERA), Cameron Wagoner (7.32 ERA), Michele Vassalotti (6.00 ERA) and newcomer Sam Gardner (7.71 ERA). With 1B Ernesto Martinez (2-for-4, double, RBI) now hitting a bit better, it may be time to get the seventh-year minor leaguer up to Biloxi for his first taste of AA ball. Friday’s outlook: 23-year old RHP Tyler Woessner (2.52 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 8.8 K/9 in 60 2/3 IP) is another Rattler who may get a shot in AA ball at some point in the second half of the season, after the Southern League stops using those extra tacky baseballs of course. For now, he’ll try to even the series 2-2 on Friday evening. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes (N/A) Via the Mudcats’ website, rainout details: Mudcats & Hillcats Cancelled Thursday With the Carolina League season’s first half officially ending on Thursday, this game will not be made up. Friday’s outlook: Don’t be surprised if RHPs Alexander Vallecillo and Will Rudy tag-team Friday’s game, looking to cover the entire nine innings, as the Mudcats need a victory to avoid a 3-0 series deficit. Arizona Complex League Action Final: ACL Athletics 2, ACL Brewers 0 Box Score / Game Log Pitching dominated this game, with the teams combining to strike out 25 hitters while only conceding two doubles, five singles and three walks. Unfortunately for the Brewers, four Athletics reached in the top of the 1st inning off of starting RHP Daniel Corniel (4 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 7 Ks), as they grabbed the 2-0 lead which held up over the remainder of the game, dropping the ACL Brewers record to 8-4. ACL Brewers’ Extras: RHP Jesus Rivero (3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 6 Ks) and LHP Anfernny Reyes (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks) were both superb. Coincidentally, they both hit the same batter, which I think the numbers clearly suggest was the fault of the opposing player. And numbers don’t lie. :) Rivero has now K’d 19 in just 11 1/3 IP and lowered his season WHIP to 0.97, while Reyes has K’d 10 in 7 2/3 IP, has yet to allow an earned run and dropped his own season WHIP to 0.52. 17-year old SS Juan Baez (3-for-4, double) collected all three hits which the Brewers registered, with his teammates going a combined 0-for-26 with one walk. Dominican Summer League Action Final: DSL Brewers #2 Squad 14, DSL Guardians Blue 2 Box Score / Game Log Our DSL Dos squad led 3-1 after two innings, 6-1 by the 5th inning and then poured in another eight runs thereafter to improve their record to 7-6. They outhit the Guardians Blue team 14-to-5 and stole five bases while conceding none. We’ll have to start asking why the organization has been largely hiding 17-year old, 6’4” right fielder Christopher Vasquez (2-for-4, HR, double, walk, 3 RBIs), who now has 2 HRs, 3 doubles and 5 RBIs in just 12 career at-bats. Still looking at the offense, each of left fielder Demetrio Nadal (3-for-4, triple, two doubles, walk, 4 RBIs) and SS Filippo Di Turi (3-for-5, double, walk, 3 RBIs) collected three hits, while combining to knock in seven runs. This was Nadal’s first career game in the outfield after 47 starts at shortstop, third base or second base. On the mound, starting RHP Melvin Hernandez (4 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 3 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks) and 18-year old Carlos Maurera (3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) were both impressive in reducing their season ERAs to 1.80 and 1.42, respectively. Final: DSL Brewers #1 Squad 7, DSL Guardians Red 4 Box Score / Game Log The DSL Uno game started as a pitching duel, 17-year old fireballer RHP Eric Prado (5 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 5 Ks matched the opposition through five scoreless innings. The Brewers’ bats didn’t spur into action until they trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the 7th inning, with 1B/C Brayan Oropeza getting them started with a single, before big-time two-out singles from C Yannic Walther (2-for-5, 3 RBIs), OF/1B Argenis Aparicio and DH/OF Brian Sanchez (2-for-3, double, walk, 2 RBIs) put them ahead 5-1. Key international signing center fielder Yophery Rodriguez (1-for-3, 2 walks, SB) also reached base three times. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Thomas Pannone silenced the opposition and Keston Hiura homered to lead the Sounds, but the night was a downer after Sal Frelick exited early on a foul ball to his knee. Wisconsin and ACL Brewers lost close games, while the DSL squads swept the Guardians. The ACL starts are interesting. We’ve basically got: 1) High-fliers with OPS over 1.000: Satchell Norman, Jhonny Severino, Reidy Mercado, Duncan Garcia, Edgardo Ordonez, Juan Baez 2) Steady performers (.600 - .850 OPS range): Yeison Perez, Johan Barrios, Dylan O’Rae, Ney Serrano 3) Struggling (sub-.500 OPS): Angel Pereira, Luis Medina, Reece Walling, Jose Caballero Others haven’t played much (Felipe Valderrama, Beyker Pastran, Jason Ollarve, Jesus Garcia) or haven’t played in the past 3 games (Jonatan Guzman, Miguel Briceno).
