Article: Week in Review: Falling Face First

Thanks. Trying to be realistic. To me, Arnold somehow made a tolerable stew out of three tomatoes, one potato, celery and croutons. Attanasio needs to do right by him and open the checkbook - $5m, $10m, $20m - anything. Give Arnold a chance to boost this roster. -

Ro Mueller replied to Kyle Ginsbach's topic in Brewer Fanatic Front Page News
I’m grateful to Attanasio for hiring Stearns, Counsell and Arnold, then actually going for it in 2018 and 2019. But I think it’s also necessary to call him out for the present underperforming state of the team. Matt Arnold made some real off-season magic in adding Contreras, Anderson, Owen Miller, Miley, Payamps, Wilson, Peguero, Rea, etc. with quite meager means. With even $5 million of additional funds, I can’t help but imagine that Arnold would have done additional magic to improve the team and put us well ahead by this point in our terrible division. -
For the week, Wisconsin (4-1) was the sole series winner, though Nashville (3-3) and Biloxi (3-3) each managed to split their contests. Carolina was a miserable 1-6 as their first half title hopes fade. Transactions: LHP Wade Miley sent on rehab assignment to AA Biloxi Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Game One (Continuation) Final: Nashville 6, Jacksonville 4 (in 8 innings) Box Score / Game Log Game Two Final: Jacksonville 8, Nashville 4 (in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review the affiliate write-up as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Settle For Sunday Split in Jacksonville After rain washed out Friday’s contest and limited Saturday to just 3.5 innings played, the Sounds and Jumbo Shrimp managed to play 11.5 innings Sunday, with plenty of rehab stints and fireworks. The continuation game picked up in the bottom of the 4th inning tied at 1-1, with 2B Eddy Alvarez (3-for-4, 2 HRs, double, 3 RBIs) homering in the 6th inning (a solo shot to tie the game 3-3) and again in the 8th inning (a 2-run shot to extend the Sounds’ lead to 6-3). The second game was played as a 7-inning affair but it was essentially over after eight pitches (single, double, homer) from rehabbing LHP Eric Lauer, who needed 34 pitches to survive a 3-run first inning. The second inning didn’t go any better as Jacksonville needed just seven pitches to load the bases (three singles), followed by a Little League grand slam. However, two homers by right fielder Tyler Naquin (2-for-3, 2 HRs, 2 RBIs) and another by C Payton Henry (1-for-3, HR, 2 RBIs) showed the potency of the Sounds’ offense in their 8-4 defeat. Sounds’ Extras: RHP Matt Bush’s second rehab appearance was a success (13 pitches, 3 ground outs), while RHP JB Bukauskus’ second rehab stint was an up-and-down affair: conceded 2-run homer, but retired five of next six batters including three in a row via strikeout. RHP Thyago Vieira (2 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 2 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks) came through once again for the Sounds in the first game, working around a lead-off single in the bottom of the 7th inning to get the game to extra innings, then only allowing the Manfred Man to score in the following frame to earn the win. While most of the organization’s concern rightfully centers on Eric Lauer’s struggles, center fielder Monte Harrison also picked a bad time to turn that 2nd inning single into a grand slam by allowing the ball to slip under his glove and roll to the wall. With the recent additions of OFs Michael Reed and Roman Quinn, along with the expected return of rehabbing OF Sal Frelick, roster spots may suddenly be at a premium. Next week’s outlook: The Sounds (31-31) return home to take on Braves’ affiliate Gwinnett (29-34). Expect RHP Pedro Fernandez (3.86 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, 7.1 K/9 in 44 1/3 IP) to start the series opener on Tuesday. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 5, Mississippi 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Mike Guerrero Notches 1,400th Career Win, Shuckers Win Finale over M-Braves Outside of a tricky 3rd inning, LHP Wade Miley (5 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 5 Ks, 1 WP) cruised through what he hopes will be the only rehab start that he requires, needing just 65 pitches to pitch five shutout innings. After retiring the first six batters of the game, consecutive singles to start the 3rd inning put Miley in a jam, though he deftly escaped with a force out at third base, fly out and strike out. The victory was Manager Mike Guerrero’s 1,400th in the minor leagues, making him only the 7th active manager to achieve this feat. Have a look at several Shuckers’ highlights at their Twitter feed. Shuckers’ Extras: After stranding four runners in the first three innings, the Shuckers offense didn’t miss in a three-run 4th inning, with a leadoff double by DH/OF Tristen Lutz (2-for-5, double, RBI), then singles by each of SS Freddy Zamora, 2B Ethan Murray (1-for-5, RBI, 2 SBs) and center fielder Jackson Chourio (3-for-5, 2 RBIs, SB). Unfortunately, the game tightened to 4-3 upon RHP Bo Bowman’s (1 IP, 3 R (2 ER)) entry in the 6th inning and Biloxi needed solid relief and an insurance run to hold on for victory. Relief came in the form of RHPs Tobias Myers, Cam Robinson and Abner Uribe covering three innings, with Uribe registering 103mph on the radar gun although he also allowed a homer. Biloxi ran the Braves ragged for much of the game, stealing six straight bases before getting caught twice in the top of the 8th inning. Their seventh stolen base was perhaps the most crucial: 3B Tyler Black singled to lead off the 9th inning, stole second base, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a fielder's choice to extend the lead to 5-3 before Uribe earned the save. Next week’s outlook: Biloxi (29-28) stays on the road to take on Rays’ affiliate Montgomery (28-29). Although no starting pitcher is listed for Tuesday’s game, RHP Christian Mejias (5.36 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 11.4 K/9 in 50 1/3 IP) is most likely to get the start. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Via the Rattlers’ website, rainout details: Rattlers Rained Out of Series Finale at West Michigan If you suspected that West Michigan had simply had enough of being beaten by the Timber Rattlers, so called the game due to a few drops, you’d probably be mistaken: three of the six scheduled games in the Midwest League were rained out on Sunday. This game will not be made up. Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin (22-33) stays in Michigan to play Dodgers’ super-affiliate Great Lakes (39-17). I assume 21-year old RHP Edwin Jimenez (2.09 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 10.1 K/9 in 47 1/3 IP) will start Tuesday’s noon contest after missing out due to today’s rainout. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Fayetteville 6, Carolina 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Nicasia Homers as Mudcats Lose Sixth Straight Losers of five straight games entering Sunday’s contest, the Mudcats needed an early spark but instead found themselves behind 4-0 before even swinging their bats. RHP Will Rudy (4 IP, 4 R, 5 H, 2 BB, 4 Ks) uncharacteristically struggled, walking two of the first three batters and then allowing three consecutive hits. At least Rudy was able to recollect himself and pitch three scoreless innings after that brutal first inning, but unfortunately the hole was already too deep for struggling Mudcats, who fell to four games behind Down East in the standings. Mudcats’ Extras: The Mudcats were outhit 10-to-4 and struck out 16 times in the game, but they did in fact make a game of it with one big swing from right fielder Kay-Lan Nicasia (1-for-4, HR, 3 RBIs) in the bottom of the 6th inning: a 3-run blast to cut the deficit to 5-3. A double from C Jose Sibrian with one out in the bottom of the 7th inning brought the potential tying run to the plate, but 2B Jheremy Vargas and SS Jadher Areinamo weren’t able to come through. In the relief corps, each of RHPs Nick Merkel and Yerlin Rodriguez conceded one earned run over their combined four innings of work. RHP Shane Smith’s hitless, scoreless, 3-strikeout inning looks better by comparison, though he also hit two out of five batters. Next week’s outlook: Carolina (30-25) heads out to take on Braves’ affiliate Augusta (27-30), hoping any number of their wounded position players (e.g. Daniel Guilarte, Luis Lara, Tayden Hall, Luis Castillo) make a return. RHP Logan Henderson may get the call to start the first game of the series. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Good luck in the three Rookie affiliate games tomorrow. Wade Miley pitched five shutout innings and Jackson Chourio collected three hits. Eddy Alvarez and Tyler Naquin combined on four homers, though Nashville split its doubleheader. As far as pitching goes, I assume we’re basically done with spending serious draft capital on older (“advanced”) arms. Here are the pitchers we’ve drafted in the top 7 rounds or paid at least a $200k signing bonus to in the last 4 years, in order by age on draft day: - Russell Smith - 22 ($1m) - Tyler Woessner - 22 ($97.5k) - Ethan Small - 22 ($1.8m) - Nick Bennett - 21 ($242.4k) - Will Rudy - 21 ($150k) - Jacob Misiorowski - 20 ($2.35m) - Carlos F. Rodriguez - 19 ($250k) - Antoine Kelly - 19 ($1.025m) - Logan Henderson - 19 ($495k) - Quinton Low - 18 ($347.5k) - Caren Vire - 17 ($497.5k)

Jacob Misiorowski didn’t disappoint in his Wisconsin debut, allowing only one hit in a victory. Carlos F. Rodriguez also struck out nine in Biloxi’s win. Nashville and Carolina’s offenses struggled in losses, but the Rookie teams won three games. /images-custom/google-analytics/author-tracker.gif Image courtesy of BrewerFanatic With seven minor league games most days, there’s a lot to go through! But before we start on the games, you can enjoy JustBaseball.com's detailed discussion on top Brewers' prospects here. Don't miss it! Transactions: LHP Justin King placed on High-A Wisconsin’s 7-day injured list RHP Matt Bush sent on rehab assignment to AAA Nashville RHP Daniel Corniel assigned to ACL Brewers from DSL Brewers-2 Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Jacksonville 4, Nashville 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review the affiliate write-up as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Stifled By Jumbo Shrimp Having rehabbing Major League DH Jesse Winker and Manager Rick Sweet tossed in the 3rd inning by the first base umpire after a ground ball out is not exactly how this game was intended to go. From that point onward, the deflated Sounds managed just one hit (a harmless 6th inning single from Michael Reed), with the final seven Nashville players striking out to end the contest, thus evening the series in Jacksonville at 2-2. Three Quick Strikes: Winker walked to lead off the game, then was registered as caught stealing, which is a shock considering that the relatively slow-footed player had only four attempted stolen bases from 2018-2023. 2B Noah Campbell was also caught on the bases (picked off after a single) in the second inning, as the Sounds’ generated just one run (helped by an error) in the first three innings despite putting the leadoff man aboard each time. C Brian Navaretto collected the team’s only extra-base hit with a 2nd inning double. Starting LHP Thomas Pannone (7 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks) gave his usual respectable performance, though undone by some harder contact than usual (homer, two doubles). The team will likely draw some encouragement from RHP Matt Bush’s first rehab appearance (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks, 1 WP), but let’s see how his health and velocity recover for subsequent outings. Friday’s outlook: RHP Janson Junk (4.27 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 5.6 K/9 in 52 2/3 IP) is scheduled to turn the tide for the Sounds in his 11th appearance of the season. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 8, Mississippi 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Five-Run Sixth Powers Shuckers to 8-2 Win over M-Braves This game was a lot tighter than the final score indicates, as the clubs entered the 6th inning tied at one run a piece. All of the damage in that 5-run 6th inning was produced with two outs, with the Shuckers getting two singles and four walks before left fielder Isaac Collins’ (2-for-4, two doubles, 2 RBIs, 2 SBs) two-run double pushed the lead to 6-1. You’ll see plenty more Shuckers’ video highlights at Biloxi’s Twitter feed. Three Quick Strikes: RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez (5 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 4 BB, 9 Ks) battled admirably in this one, overcoming some heavy traffic with key strikeouts, though needed 98 pitches (54 strikes) to get through five innings. He was helped out by the do-everything Collins and SS Freddy Zamora gunning down a runner at the plate on a double in the 3rd inning - nice relay. Other position players chipping in on the victory included center fielder Jackson Chourio (two hits and a stolen base), Zamora and 3B Zavier Warren (two RBIs each) and DH/3B Tyler Black (a hit and two stolen bases). The team was also happy to see struggling RHP Cam Robinson (1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 Ks) turn in a positive relief stint. For the Braves, Southern League legend 1B Drew Lugbauer connected on his 58th homer over 2.5 seasons of Double-A ball (and 12th this year in just 44 games), as their MLB club has for whatever reason decided that this is how the left-handed masher should spend his 7th minor league season in their organization. Friday’s outlook: Although no starting pitcher is listed, the most likely selection is RHP TJ Shook (3.71 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 10.1 K/9 in 26 2/3 IP), who last pitched one week ago. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 4, West Michigan 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Misiorowski Dazzles in Timber Rattlers Debut Undoubtedly the story of the day was 21-year old RHP Jacob Misiorowski (5 1/3 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 1 BB, 1 HBP, 7 Ks) making his debut in High-A ball and only allowing three baserunners to reach in a dominating performance. The way he mixes 100mph heat with well-placed off-speed pitches is impressive and Brewers’ fans will hope to see many more such performances over the next 20 years. Three Quick Strikes: Though Misiorowski was cruising, the game was actually scoreless into the 6th inning, when the Rattlers finally broke through on center fielder Joe Gray Jr.'s double with two runners on base. That odd play saw the lead runner (2B Robert Moore – 1-for-3, walk, RBI, SB) score, the trailing runner (DH/C Matt Wood – 2-for-4) thrown out at the plate, then Gray himself come around to score on a throw into left field. 24-year old RHP Max Lazar (3 2/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) continued Jacob’s excellent work, pounding the zone with strikes (33 in 43 total pitches) over nearly four innings to deservedly earn his second save. Eight of nine Timber Rattlers’ recorded at least one hit, with 9 of the team’s 10 hits being singles, as the squad finally overcomes the ridiculously low BABIP (now up to .288) which hurt them the past two months. Friday’s outlook: Either RHP Stiven Cruz or RHP Tyler Woessner could get the call to start, with Cruz listed on the MILB.com schedule and Woessner stated in the Game Notes. A win would give Wisconsin a 4-0 series lead and their second consecutive series victory. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Fayetteville 6, Carolina 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Woodpeckers Hand Mudcats Third Straight Loss Starting RHP Logan Henderson (4 2/3 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 6 Ks) did his part, but the offense didn’t generate any extra base hits and left ten men on base in a game which got away from Carolina in the 7th inning. Their third consecutive loss puts the Mudcats one full game behind Down East in the first half standings, so the men need to find another gear quickly to try to take the title. Three Quick Strikes: Henderson’s 70 pitches (51 strikes) and 4 2/3 innings of work are career highs in the Brewers’ system, since being drafted in the fourth round in 2021. The team had taken a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning on 1B Jesus Parra’s RBI single and Henderson exited with the score square at 1-1. Unfortunately, RHP Tyler Wehrle (4 1/3 IP, 5 R (4 ER), 8 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 0 Ks) wasn’t able to keep the game tight, allowing six straight Woodpeckers to reach base (five singles, one hit-by-pitch) in the four-run 6th inning, but thankfully things went better for him over the next 3 2/3 innings as he finished out the game. Offensively, each of left fielder Hedbert Perez (2-for-4, walk, RBI) and Jheremy Vargas (0-for-1, 3 walks) reached base three times, while in the field outfielders Jace Avina and Kay-Lan Nicasia each threw out runners on the bases. This was Nicasia’s first start in center field of 2023, after 15 such games there last year. Friday’s outlook: The team looks to high-performing 20-year old RHP Patricio Aquino (2.39 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 9.2 K/9 in 26 1/3 IP) to end their 3-game skid. Arizona Complex League Action Final: ACL Brewers 10, ACL Angels 4 Box Score / Game Log The most underestimated advantage of combining our two ACL squads in that they can now compete as a Super Team aiming to win the 17-team league. On Thursday, the young Brewers in Arizona outplayed their opposition in every respect: 15 hits to 7, five stolen bases to zero, no errors vs. four for the Angels. It’s still early days, but it must feel good to be young and undefeated at 3-and-0. Every spot in the batting order reached base, with eight of them collecting at least one hit. The team opened the game with four straight singles, led 5-0 after one inning and 10-0 by the 5th inning as they utterly dominated the Angels. Three Quick Strikes: Center fielder Duncan Garcia (3-for-4, triple, 2 RBIs, 2 SBs) and C Satchell Norman (3-for-4, walk, 2 RBIs) each led the way with three hits, while DH/SS Juan Baez (2-for-4, triple, RBI, SB), SS Jhonny Severino (2-for-4, SB) and 1B Johan Barrios (2-for-4) had two each. Starting RHP Daniel Corniel (3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks) was in lineup limbo before the game, mentioned as being in Extended Spring Training but not actually on the ACL roster, thus potentially suggesting an injury matter. Never fear, the organization was just waiting to unleash him at the appropriate time, as he put together a terrific stateside debut. RHP Jesus Rivero (4 1/3 IP, 4 R (3 ER), 5 H, 1 BB, 7 Ks, 1 WP) demonstrated excellent stuff as usual, though the Angels got to him with two doubles and a homer in his third inning of work. This is the first time he’s been asked to pitch more than three innings since his 2021 DSL days. Dominican Summer League Action (write-ups courtesy of colleague Mass Haas) Final: DSL Brewers #2 Squad 4, DSL Cardinals 2 Box Score / Game Log Any win over a Cardinals team is fun, STL only has one DSL team. Down by a 2-1 score entering the bottom of the 7th in this nine-inning affair, the Cerveceros Dos plated three to take a lead they would not relinquish. The runs scored on a line drive double, a fielder's choice, and a sacrifice fly. Of the four teenage pitchers who threw for the victors, three were making their professional debuts, including still-16-year-old starting RHP Melvin Hernandez out of Nicaragua. Venezuelan native Carlos Maurera and Dominican-born Lenin Mendez, both 18-year-old RHP's, like Hernandez, threw well. The three combined for 6.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 11K - nice! Winning pitcher Maurera also stranded all three runners he inherited from second-year pro David Dominguez. Dominguez walked four, hit a batter, and threw three wild pitches in his 2.1 innings. At the plate: Leadoff man 16-year-old Dominican native Roderick Flores notched his first pro hit. Flores also walked three times. 17-year-old switch-hitting Venezuelan SS Filippo Di Turi, with $1.3M in his pocket (well, not literally, at least we don't think so), had two hits including the big 7th inning double that tied things at 2-2. Three-hole hitter CF Antony Gomez was the 4th highest bonus pool signing back in January, the 17-year-old Dominican inked for a cool $600,000. 17-year-old switch-hitting 3B Luis Lameda, another Venezuelan infielder, was the 6th highest January bonus signing at $320,000. He singled twice and walked 1.207 OPS through his first three games. Did we say infielders in the Crew system tend to be Venezuelans? Another still-16-year-old, drafted as (of course) a shortstop but playing second base here, Pedro Ibarguen, walked and singled. Finally, as we highlight six of the lineup spots today, the international variety continued at the bottom of the order as 17-year-old LF Danny Puerta hails from Colombia. 86 degrees, sunny, calm wind. Because always. Final: DSL Brewers #1 Squad 9, DSL Guardians Blue 3 Box Score / Game Log Whoo-hoo, undefeated at 3-0 and a plus-13 run differential. Print those playoff tickets. Unlike the well-played partner game on the island today, this one was one of those "oh, this is rookie ball" contests. Thankfully, the Crew kids played the relatively clean side of the game. Cerveceros Uno scored their nine runs on just five hits (three for extra bases, though), They drew 14 walks and were plunked twice. Viva Mexico as the World Tour continues. Pro debut for 17-year-old RH starter Eric Prado, who allowed two runs in the first but then tossed two scoreless. 2nd-year-pro LHP Jose Meneses, who signed out of Venezuela for just $10,000, grabbed the win with three scoreless frames (5 K, 1 BB). To close things out, 16-year-old Nicaraguan RHP Saul Sanchez was awarded a save in his pro debut - 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K - sweet, keep that ball and give it to Mom and Dad! Leadoff SS Kevin Ereu is the big $1.4M signing, but his lone contribution here was an RBI groundout in the three-run 9th inning. LH-hitting Yophery Rodriguez (top $1.5M Crew signing out of the Dominican Republic) walked five (!) times before being called out on strikes in the 9th. He'll be 17 years old all season. Did we say World Tour? Catcher Yannic Walther is the Germany native (backstory). Have a pro debut, RF Brian Sanchez! Triple, single, two walks. Mixed adventures on the basepaths, though, check the box. Finally, another pro debut, and another switch-hitter. 17-year-old first baseman Jhon Bencosme of the D.R. walked in three plate appearances. Time of game 4 hours, nine minutes! (The DSL Brewers' 4-2 win took 03:25). We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Good luck in Friday’s 7-game MILB slate! With seven minor league games most days, there’s a lot to go through! He was helped out by the do-everything Collins gunning down a runner at the plate on a double in the 3rd inning. Other position players chipping in on the victory included center fielder Jackson Chourio (two hits and a stolen base), SS Freddy Zamora and 3B Zavier Warren (two RBIs each) and DH/3B Tyler Black (a hit and two stolen bases). Three Quick Strikes: Though Misiorowski was cruising, the game was actually scoreless into the 6th inning, when the Rattlers finally broke through on center fielder Joe Gray Jr. double with two runners on base. Arizona Complex League Action Final: ACL Brewers 10, ACL Angels 4 Box Score / Game Log The most underestimated advantage of combining our two ACL squads in that they can now compete as a Super Team aiming to win the league the 17-team league. More common pre-2009 when we didn’t have a DSL team. From 2009 onward, I’m only seeing Mario Perez in 2019. I wouldn’t count Jolon Zhao, since we wouldn’t likely send an Asian signee to the DSL. -

That’s the 2nd indication we’ve gotten that the team is high on now-17 year old RHP Aldrin Gonzalez, who’s apparently skipping DSL ball and coming directly stateside. Here’s a note from earlier in the year: -
For the week, Carolina (5-1) and Wisconsin (4-2) were series winners, while Nashville (3-3) and Biloxi (3-3) each earned splits, with the Sounds wishing they’d held on in the clincher. Sunday’s Game Balls go to Justin Jarvis, Willy Adames, Luis Urias, Alexander Cornielle and Jackson Chourio, with honorable mentions to Felix Valerio and Eduardo Garcia. Today, don’t miss our first Monday Minor League action, as the ACL Brewers, DSL Brewers-1 and DSL Brewers-2 squads have their Opening Day. Transactions: LHP Bennett Sousa recalled to MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville RHP Jake Cousins optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers SS Willy Adames sent on rehab assignment to High-A Wisconsin Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Charlotte 10, Nashville 8 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review the affiliate write-up as part of their Link Report routine: Knights Walk-Off Sounds in Heartbreaking Finish Although RHP Thyago Vieira (1 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 0 Ks) was charged with the loss and allowed his first earned runs allowed of 2023, the game really turned on three Sounds pitchers serving up six(!) walks in the 7th inning to allow the Knights to forge a 7-7 tie, although the final one was dubiously charged to RHP Tyson Miller (1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 Ks). Back to Vieira, all he did was retire the first two batters on five pitches, then break the bats of the next two hitters (single, single) before an ill-timed pitch into Adam Haseley’s wheelhouse for the 3-run walk-off blast. Haseley was a one-man wrecking crew: 4-for-4 with two walks and 4 RBIs. Three Quick Strikes: 1B Patrick Dorrian (8th home run, 2 SBs) and 3B Luis Urias (2-for-4, double, walk, 3 RBIs) did the early damage and center fielder Michael Reed (2-for-2, double, 2 walks, RBI, SB) nearly won the game with an 8th inning RBI double before things fell apart. RHP Pedro Fernandez’s (5 1/3 IP, 4 R, 8 H, 3 BB, 5 Ks, 1 WP) final line wasn’t rosy, but he stabilized things over five solid innings (73 pitches) before fading with two walks to three batters (18 pitches) in the top of the 7th inning. LHP Ethan Small (1 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 K) served as an opener, but unfortunately wasn’t effective as he searches for that essential yet elusive consistency. RHP JC Mejia (1/3 IP, 1 R, 0 H, 3 BB) also has to quickly shake off his poor relief appearance. Left fielder Skye Bolt was ejected after a 5th inning strikeout, the third Sound to take an early shower in this series. Next week’s outlook: Nashville stays on the road to play seven games (including a Wednesday doubleheader) against Marlins’ affiliate Jacksonville. Rehabbing LHP Eric Lauer is expected to start Tuesday’s opening game and be joined by rehabbing RH reliever Matt Bush. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 6, Pensacola 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Shuckers Win Finale against Pensacola after Dominant Start from Justin Jarvis After three affiliates had already lost heartbreakers earlier on Sunday, Biloxi won a squeaker despite being no-hit for the first five innings. You’ll find a number of video highlights at the Shuckers’ Twitter feed, but can start here with Jackson Chourio’s 3-run homer to give Biloxi a late cushion, which they ended up needing: Three Quick Strikes: RHP Justin Jarvis (7 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 6 Ks) grabbed his second win of the week, needing only 83 pitches to get through seven innings, allowing only an RBI single in the 6th inning. Down 1-0, the Shuckers finally broke through against Jonathan Bermudez with two hits and two walks to tie the game 1-1, before adding five runs against the Blue Wahoos’ bullpen the next inning. 2B Felix Valerio (2-run double) gave Biloxi its first lead, then center fielder Jackson Chourio (1-for-3, HR, walk, 3 RBIs) appeared to put the game away with a 3-run blast. Unfortunately, RHP Cam Robinson (1/3 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 0 Ks) is still not right, allowing four hits to the five batters he faced. Thankfully RHPs Luis Contreras and Abner Uribe were able to hold on to preserve the victory, although the fired up Uribe was ejected after the final full count strikeout, angry about a close play at the plate on a passed ball one pitch prior. Next week’s outlook: Biloxi heads on the road to take on Braves’ affiliate Mississippi just outside of Jackson. RHP Tobias Myers (5.06 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 11.1 K/9 in 48 IP) will most likely start the opening game, while rehabbing LHP Wade Miley is expected to pitch in the series finale on Sunday, June 11. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Peoria 6, Wisconsin 5 (in 10 innings) Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Chiefs Beat Rattlers 6-5 in Ten Innings DH Willy Adames (2-for-4, HR, double, walk, RBI) brought special excitement to 4,038 fans in Appleton, homering and playing all ten innings. Unfortunately, Peoria managed to collect a two-out hit off of RHP Taylor Floyd (2 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 1 H, 2 BB, 3 Ks) to score the Manfred Man in the top of the 10th inning, while the Timber Rattlers went 3-up, 3-down to lose the finale despite out-hitting the Chiefs 11-to-8 in the game. Find all the game highlights here from the terrific Wisconsin media team: The Chris Mehring / Kyle Lobner post-game includes a conversation with Manager Joe Ayrault. Three Quick Strikes: 21-year old RHP Alexander Cornielle (5 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 4 Ks) turned in an encouraging performance after struggling with a 7.94 ERA in five May starts, exiting with the game tied 1-1. Unfortunately, RHP Michele Vassalotti (2/3 IP, 3 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 Ks) wasn’t able to follow up Alexander’s excellent work, conceding a triple, double and two walks over six hitters. Adames was in the thick of the game: 1st inning fly out, lead-off 4th inning double but stranded, 6th inning solo homer to spark comeback from 4-1 deficit, intentionally walked in 7th inning with tying run on third base (yes, the Cardinals are this petty), 9th inning fly out with game tied 5-5. After Adames’ 6th inning homer, Wisconsin reeled off four consecutive singles to tie the game 4-4, the last by SS Eduardo Garcia (2-for-5, double, 2 RBIs), who also doubled in a run in the bottom of the 8th inning to tie the game 5-5. Usual shortstop Eric Brown Jr. was absent after leaving Saturday’s game early. Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin will head to the other side of Lake Michigan to take on Tigers’ affiliate West Michigan outside of Grand Rapids. Although no opening game starter is listed, 21-year RHP Edwin Jimenez (1.91 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, 10.8 K/9 in 42 1/3 IP) is due for his turn in the rotation. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Lynchburg 2, Carolina 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Win Streak Ends at Seven as Mudcats Fall 2-1 Although Carolina out-hit the Hillcats 5-2 and Lynchburg also committed three errors, the Mudcats simply didn’t do enough offensively to win the finale and clinch a series sweep. The good news is that title chasers Down East also lost by a run, so the Mudcats’ retain their half-game first place lead with 16 games to play. Three Quick Strikes: Starting RHP Yujanyer Herrera (4 2/3 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 HBP, 4 Ks) played for the first time in 24 days, only having one poor inning (double, single, walk, hit-by-pitch in the 4th inning) as he gave his teammates a solid chance for victory. Carolina’s only run came via a SS Gregory Barrios RBI single with one out in the top of the 9th inning. Unfortunately, left fielder Hedbert Perez’s (0-for-4; AVG .143, OPS .468) miserable stretch continues as he grounded into a double play to end the contest. DH Jhonnys Cabrera collected his first hit (an 8th inning double) in Low-A ball, as he saw action for just the fourth time this year. RH relievers Jeison Pena and Yerlin Rodriguez each played with fire (combined 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 4 BB, 1 HBP, 1 WP), but didn’t concede a run. RHP Tanner Shears only needed eight pitches to retire three batters in his inning of work. Next week’s outlook: Carolina returns home to play seven games (including a Wednesday doubleheader) against Astros’ affiliate Fayetteville. Expect RHP Will Rudy (0.74 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 9.2 K/9 in 24 1/3 IP) to start the first game of the series. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Good luck to our Arizona Complex League squad (eyes especially on INFs Dylan O’Rae, Johan Barrios and Jhonny Severino) and two Dominican Summer League teams (including 2023 super-signings OF Yophery Rodriguez, INF Kevin Ereu and INF Filippo Di Turi) in their season debuts on Monday, June 5.
