  1. Great write-up. Yeah, I was also thinking that Eric Brown Jr. could follow the ol’ Cam Devanney early AA Biloxi placement route. He’s 19 months older than Eduardo Garcia. But we also have Freddy Zamora! Oh, the bounty of terrific prospects!

  3. Josh Lindblom covered six scoreless innings for the Sounds, Victor Castaneda delivered six innings of one-run ball for the Shuckers and Alexander Cornielle provided five innings of one-run ball for the Timber Rattlers in a winning night on the farm. Doston’s two homers tripled his career long ball production, as the speed-first 21-year old outfielder demonstrated his mettle and potential in a three-hit, four-RBI game for AA Biloxi. Thursday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Cornielle, Castaneda, Lindblom and Doston, as well as Pedro Severino, with an honorable mention to Patrick Dorrian. Transactions: RHP Justin Topa designated the 29th man for MLB Brewers' Thursday doubleheader, coming up from AAA Nashville OF Esteury Ruiz optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers (with INF Mike Brosseau replacing him on the MLB roster) RHP Luis Contreras promoted to AAA Nashville from AA Biloxi Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 10, Charlotte 6 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Lindblom Stellar as Sounds Top Knights RHP Josh Lindblom (6 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 8 Ks) gave Nashville the lift it needed with six scoreless, two-hit innings (95 pitches), his fifth straight solid start, exiting with a comfortable 5-0 lead. Offensively, the team pounded out 17 hits, with four hits in the 1st inning producing two runs on RBI singles from 1B Jon Singleton (2-for-5, double, RBI) and OF Joey Wiemer (2-for-5, 2 RBIs). Four more hits in the 5th inning extended the lead to 5-0, with Singleton (double), Wiemer (RBI single) and C Pedro Severino (RBI double; 2-for-5, HR, double, 2 RBIs, SB) in particular coming through. However, things tightened up in the bottom of the 7th inning, as RHP Hobie Harris had a rare rough outing, conceding three runs before being ejected alongside Manager Rick Sweet and hitting coach Al LeBoeuf with the score narrowed to 5-3. Leave it to the legendary Mr. Sweet to get ejected in the game which earned him his 2,181st victory, moving him into 6th all time in the history of minor league baseball. Thankfully, the hits just kept coming for the Sounds, who brought in three runs on four hits in the top of the 8th inning to get back to a more comfortable 8-3 position, including 3B Patrick Dorrian (2-for-4, HR, double, walk, RBI) hitting his ninth dinger of the season. The win cuts this week’s series deficit in Charlotte to 2-1, but with Columbus also winning the Sounds first place advantage remains just 3.5 games. Three Quick Strikes: Every Sound in the starting lineup collected a hit in this game, including three from OF Matt Lipka, two each from Pablo Reyes and Weston Wilson and one each from Cam Devanney and Sal Frelick, who extended his on-base streak to 26 games. Many online posters wonder why RHP Jake Cousins hasn’t gotten the recall to the majors yet after recovering from an injury, but the reality is that he’s still working his way back to form. On this night, Cousins conceded an 8th inning run, meaning he’s given up a run in six of his last ten outings, though thankfully with no multi-run catastrophes. Just-turned 23-year old RHP Cam Robinson also hasn’t quite adjusted to AAA ball yet, giving up two runs in the 9th inning of this game. After a Severino 9th inning homer to boost the lead to 9-4, Dorrian flied out and apparently decided to give the umpires his opinion on their earlier behavior, so he joined his coaches and teammate in receiving an early exit instruction. Friday’s outlook: 23-year old LHP Robert Gasser (3.82 ERA in High-A/AA) will make his second-ever start in AAA ball, as Nashville strives to even the series 2-2 and keep second place Columbus at bay. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 5, Mississippi 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Doston's Career Night Drives Shuckers 5-3 Victory In your daily reminder that everyone in the system is a legitimate prospect, speedy OF Terence Doston (3-for-4, 2 HRs, 4 RBIs, SB) smacked two home runs and drove in four runs in a breakout performance for the 21-year old former two-sport high school star. Each of Doston’s hits was of the clutch variety, starting with a 5th inning solo shot to give Biloxi a 2-1 lead, an RBI single in the 6th inning to extend it to 3-1 and then a two-run homer in the 8th inning to provide much needed insurance after the Braves had clawed back to 3-2. On the mound, RHP Victor Castaneda (5 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 5 BB, 3 Ks) brought his season ERA back down to 3.97 with a much-needed effort on Thursday, winning his fourth game of the year and exiting after five innings with a 2-1 lead. The walks will obviously worry him, but sometimes you have to bulldog your way through. The Shuckers win cuts their series deficit to 2-1, aided by four stolen bases (including 2B Felix Valerio’s 29th of the year and burly-looking yet fleet-of-foot 1B Thomas Dillard’s 13th) with nobody caught stealing. Three Quick Strikes: Rehabbing LHP Clayton Andrews (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks) delivered a second straight encouraging shutout inning as he sets his sights on big things in 2023, while Ryan Middendorf (2 IP, 1 R) continues to adjust to life in Biloxi and free agent-to-be RHP Robbie Baker earned his first AA save despite allowing one run. Some followers may have expected better hitting numbers from Doston (.692 career OPS; .640 OPS in AA/High-A ball this year) after he was given a $125,000 signing bonus in the 2019 draft, but it’s probably better to think of him along the lines of former Brewer OF Monte Harrison or current Nashville RHP Lucas Erceg: extremely athletic young men who need time to figure out how to get the most out of their talent on the field. Expect Doston to remain at AA Biloxi next season, with the Brewers hoping that his talent begins to shine consistently. 3B Yeison Coca unfortunately exited in the 6th inning immediately after being hit by a pitch. Friday’s outlook: LHP Brandon Knarr gets the call to start on Friday, with Biloxi needing a win to even the series 2-2. Solid work in Knarr’s last few outings have lowered his ERA in AA ball to 3.87 (76 2/3 IP), with a season ERA of 2.89 when including his early season domination for Wisconsin. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes (link goes to roster instead) Final: Wisconsin 5, Beloit 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: Wisconsin Beats Beloit 5-1 for Third Straight Win As always for Wisconsin home games, nothing beats the video recap from the Timber Rattlers’ exceptional media team: 21-year RHP Alexander Cornielle (6 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 7 Ks) continues to cement his prospect status, throwing six innings of one-run, four-hit ball in the Timber Rattlers third straight victory over the Sky Carp. However, it was a tight contest, 1-1 going into the bottom of the 8th inning after reliever RHP Joey Matulovich (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 4 Ks) followed up Cornielle’s work with two shutout innings of his own. After a 2B Jose Acosta walk and OF/2B Zach Raabe (1-for-2, double, walk, RBI) double to open the bottom of the 8th inning, OF Arbert Cipion broke the deadlock with a two-run single which somehow found its way through the drawn-in infield, followed by a run-scoring error and SS Eduardo Garcia providing the final run with an RBI single. Three Quick Strikes: The early runs came on solo homers from Beloit in the 1st inning and Acosta (1-for-2, HR, walk, RBI) in the 2nd inning. C Darrien Miller was hit by a pitch for the 24th time this year, but this one is more worrisome as he immediately exited after the 8th inning beaning, forcing DH/C Jeferson Quero to finish the game behind the plate. If Miller can’t go over Wisconsin’s remaining three games, don’t be surprised if young C/1B/OF Tayden Hall makes his High-A debut behind the plate in one contest. OF Jackson Chourio (1-for-3, walk, SB) reached base twice, while starter-turned-reliever RHP Brannon Jordan pitched a scoreless 9th inning. Friday’s outlook: 20-year old RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez (2.89 season ERA; 1.44 ERA in High-A ball) will make his 7th High-A start, as Wisconsin aims for a fourth straight victory in this week’s series. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Myrtle Beach 8, Carolina 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Moore Hits Second Home Run in 8-2 Loss to Pelicans On the RHP Jacob Misiorowski-front (1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 3 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks), the good news is that his second outing went much better than his debut, but the bad news is that he walked the last three batters he faced and needed RHP Trevor Tietz to bail him out of that bases loaded 2nd inning jam with consecutive strikeouts. RHP Max Lazar entered in the 3rd inning to continue his rehab work, but conceded three runs (two earned) on three hits in that frame before settling in with the Mudcats trailing 3-0. A SS Eric Brown Jr. (1-for-3, double, walk, SB) double and 2B Robert Moore homer cut the lead to 3-2 in the 4th inning, but Carolina would get no closer. In fact, these were two of Carolina’s measly three hits on the evening. The loss puts Carolina down 2-0 in this week’s road series. Three Quick Strikes: The Mudcats last major opportunity came via two 6th inning walks and a wild pitch. Down 3-2 with runners on the corners and one out, Moore unfortunately grounded into an inning-ending double play. RHP Edwin Jimenez entered in the bottom of the 6th inning and was greeted by a solo homer and triple before recording his first out. A two-run homer in the 7th inning and RBI double in the 8th inning completed a difficult three-inning, five-run (four earned) night for him. Three errors didn’t help Carolina’s cause, although the Pelicans also committed two though offset their own with two double plays. Friday’s outlook: 19-year old RHP Yujanyer Herrera (6.63 ERA in ACL/Low-A) is scheduled to make his fourth appearance (third start) for the Mudcats, eager to improve on his last two outings (5 2/3 innings pitched, 13 earned runs allowed). 4. Three starting pitchers combined to throw 17 innings of 2-run ball in victories for Nashville, Biloxi and Wisconsin. Terence Doston had a coming out party with two clutch homers. Jacob Misiorowski had an encouraging start in Carolina’s loss. 5. Tough to see Ethan Small get battered while throwing 101 pitches. I think the manager was forced to keep him in, as two relievers (Topa, Kelley) were sent to join the Brewers taxi squad in Colorado. Nashville needs to turn it around over the next 4 games of this series, but Dylan File is also apparently out. Hopefully Brice Turang returns soon. We also miss Andy Otero and it would have been nice to re-claim Angel Perdomo when the opportunity presented itself. Let’s go Sounds!

  7. OF Abraham Almonte finally gets his promotion back to the majors after having a .951 OPS though 360 plate appearances in the International League. 61 BB / 77 K ratio is also solid. Switch hitter. Congrats to him. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/09/red-sox-to-select-abraham-almonte.html
  8. I’m assuming they’ll call him up to MLB before he spends 20 days and thus burns his first option year. But I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
  9. Wonderful write up! Thank you CheeseheadInQC.
  10. Thank you. But I feel the need to say, "Mario, Mario, wherefore art thou Mario?" I'm not sure how MLB.com kept 23-year old C Mario Feliciano out of the Top 30 prospects...either he graduated or they got tired of him. With a 26-man MLB roster, 13-pitcher limit and two of Feliciano's option years already burned, I think there's a 75% chance he starts and ends 2023 on the MLB roster. Starting pitchers LHP Russell Smith, RHP Logan Henderson and RHP Victor Castaneda show up on that Top 30 list as well: 23-year old Smith has struggled in his inaugural minor league season at High-A Wisconsin (and is now shut down with an injury) 20-year old Henderson has only made a few recent appearances at Low-A Carolina after a year-long injury 24-year old Castaneda has been a dependable leader in AA Biloxi Smith and Henderson should be expected to make major progress in 2023, with Henderson (I think) also being a candidate for the upcoming Arizona Fall League. Castaneda's obviously ready to try his luck in AAA ball next year. And then we've got three other starting pitchers definitely nipping at this list: 22-year old RHP Justin Jarvis (just promoted to AA), 20-year old RHP Stiven Cruz (doing terrific since recent promotion to High-A) and 21-year old RHP Alexander Cornielle (also recently promoted to High-A). Each has flashed dominance at times this season, with Cruz especially finishing strong.

  12. Mario Feliciano and Jon Singleton combined for 10 RBIs in another Nashville win. Fernando Olguin and Logan Henderson pitched a 12K shutout for Carolina. Wisconsin lost a close one and Biloxi is still looking for its offense. Mario Feliciano drove in seven runs, including breaking a 3-3 deadlock with a grand slam to lead the Sounds to a 12-4 victory in Memphis. On the mound, Fernando Olguin threw six shutout innings, while getting support from homers by Jace Avina and Eduarqui Fernandez who combined to drive in five runs in a 6-0 defeat of Columbia. Sunday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Feliciano, Olguin, Singleton, Avina and Fernandez Transactions: RHP Nash Walters traded to MLB Angels from AAA Nashville for cash considerations 1B Ernesto Martinez activated from High-A Wisconsin’s 7-day injured list Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 12, Memphis 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Feliciano Tallies 7 RBI, Sounds Crush Memphis C Mario Feliciano (2-for-5, HR, 7 RBIs) had an answer for everything Memphis threw at the Sounds on Sunday, knocking in two runs with a 1st inning single to tie the game 2-2, gunning down the Redbirds’ only stolen base attempt in the 5th inning, then blasting a grand slam on a full count with two outs in the 5th inning to break a 3-3 deadlock. If not for Feliciano, we’d likely be talking about 1B Jon Singleton (1-for-3, HR, 2 walks, 3 RBIs), who apparently terrified Memphis to such a degree that they walked him twice with the bases loaded, the first tying the game 3-3 in the 5th inning and the latter extending Nashville’s lead to 9-3 in the 6th inning. Of course, their fear was justified, as Singleton then mashed a solo homer in the 8th inning, his 23rd of the season to go along with 102 walks. The victory completed a 5-1 week for the Sounds, who lead the International League’s West Division by 4.5 games over Columbus. The team is now an incredible 30 games over .500 on the season. Three Quick Strikes: With RHP Dylan File apparently injured (though no official word) and RHP Caleb Boushley easing his way back after an injury of his own, Sunday had a “bullpen game” feel to it: Three innings from Boushley (2 ER), one from RHP Lucas Erceg (1 ER), two from RHP Jake Cousins (3 hits, no runs), then one inning each from RHPs Zach Brown, JC Mejia and Cam Robinson . DH Pedro Severino (2-for-4, HR, double, walk, RBI) and OF Sal Frelick (2-for-4, walk, SB) each reached base three times in Nashville’s dominant victory. Still just 23 years of age and hitting .293 on the season, the Brewers had better make a permanent place on the MLB roster for Feliciano in 2023 or else they’ll end up burning his final remaining option year. Next week’s outlook: Nashville (79-49) heads to Charlotte (50-79) to play the White Sox’s AAA affiliate. Veteran RHP Josh Lindblom (4.64 ERA) is scheduled to be the starter for the first game of the series. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Rocket City 5, Biloxi 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Shuckers Drop Series Finale After being no-hit on Saturday, the good news is that Biloxi collected seven hits on this day and even scored a run. Of course, the run was scored while already down 5-0, while the team went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and also committed two errors which led to three unearned runs. Yeah, it’s a rough time in Biloxi at the moment, as they’re really struggling to adapt after losing seven of their top 11 offensive contributors (five to promotion, two to injury). The loss completes a 1-5 week against Rocket City, despite the Shuckers’ starting pitchers only conceding 18 earned runs over the six games. A walk and RBI double opened the scoring for the Trash Pandas against starting LHP Nick Bennett in the 3rd inning, but the real damage came in the 4th inning, when C Brent Diaz dropped an out at home plate to extend Rocket City’s lead to 2-0, which was followed by an RBI single, “sacrifice squeeze” and another RBI single. SS Cam Devanney (1-for-4, HR, RBI) smacked his 20th home run of the year in the 6th inning to cut the deficit to 5-1, then the Shuckers loaded the bases with two outs in the 8th inning but 3B Yeison Coca wasn’t able to come through in the clutch (first pitch grounder force out). Three Quick Strikes: This was Bennett’s (5 IP, 5 R (2 ER), 7 H, 3 BB, 1 WP, 3 Ks) second start of the week, but this one was more difficult as he dealt with traffic every inning. Rehabbing LHP Clayton Andrews (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) had a nice bounce-back effort, combining with RHPs Ryan Middendorf and Luis Contreras on three innings of scoreless relief to give the Shuckers a chance. Perhaps adding injury to insult, Diaz was hit by a pitch in the top of the 6th inning and exited the game in the bottom half of the frame. Next week’s outlook: Biloxi (58-65) hosts Braves’ AA affiliate Mississippi (57-67). Expect RHP TJ Shook (4.25 ERA in High-A/AA) to start the opener. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Peoria 4, Wisconsin 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: Seventh Inning Decisive in Peoria’s Win Over Wisconsin With Saturday’s victory, Wisconsin had already wrapped up a road series win, then grabbed a 1-0 lead early on Sunday, but a pivotal 7th inning went the way of the Chiefs. DH/C Jeferson Quero (2-for-4, double, RBI) knocked in OF Jackson Chourio (0-for-3, walk) with an RBI double in the 1st inning, while RHP Stiven Cruz (3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 0 Ks) went about lowering his High-A ERA to a miniscule 0.47 with three shutout innings of work. However, being his second start of the week, this was a short outing for Cruz, who made way for RHP Zach Mort (3 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 1 K). Mort gave up four hits in the 4th inning (but just one run) before settling down. A Peoria error and OF/2B Zack Raabe walk to open the 7th inning gave Wisconsin a golden opportunity, but they were unable to cash in, even after a C Darrien Miller infield single with two outs to load the bases. Peoria then made the Timber Rattlers pay in the bottom half of the frame by scoring three runs off of RHP Brannon Jordan on two hits, a hit batsmen and an error on 3B Ben Metzinger to take a 4-1 lead. Three Quick Strikes: After RHP Miguel Guerrero pitched a scoreless 8th inning, Wisconsin grabbed two runs in the 9th inning on a SS Eduardo Garcia walk and 2B Ethan Murray (1-for-3, HR, walk, 2 RBIs) two-run homer, but unfortunately didn’t get another runner aboard. This game marked the injury return of 1B Ernesto Martinez , who doubled to lead off the 4th inning but was left stranded. Despite playing two infielders in the outfield (Raabe, Jose Acosta), the Timber Rattlers defense had been a solid plus until the 7th inning gaffe, completing ground ball double plays in the 1st and 3rd innings, while Acosta threw out a runner at second base from right field in the 4th inning to help out Mort. Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin (65-60) hosts Marlins’ High-A affiliate Beloit (62-63). RHP Brady Schanuel (3.20 ERA) is scheduled to get yet another short start (~50 pitches) in Game One of the series. Carolina Pre-Game Notes Final: Carolina 6, Columbia 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Mudcats Earn Series Splitting 6-0 Victory in Home Finale Carolina got the win they needed to even their home series against Columbia 3-3 and did it in convincing fashion. It was a very encouraging start for 2021 fourth round selection RHP Logan Henderson (3 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 6 Ks), who’s still building up strength after a long injury layoff. He pitched three scoreless innings here, exiting with a 1-0 lead before giving way to RHP Fernando Olguin. The first Mudcat run was of the manufactured variety, with 2B Robert Moore (1-for-3, double, walk, 2 SBs) drawing a walk, stealing second and third base, then coming home on an RBI groundout. That run was ultimately the only one which Henderson and Olguin would require, as the 21-year old Olguin (6 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 6 Ks) had his best performance of the season, conceding just two hits and no walks over six scoreless innings. While Carolina’s pitchers remained dominant, OFs Eduarqui Fernandez (2-for-3, HR, walk, 2 RBIs, SB) and Jace Avina hit their eighth and 15th home runs of 2022 to increase the lead to 3-0 in the 4th inning and 4-0 in the 6th inning, with Avina collecting two more RBIs with a 7th inning single to complete the scoring. Three Quick Strikes: 2022 first round selection SS Eric Brown Jr. (1-for-3, walk, 2 SBs) was a problem for the Fireflies, getting on base twice and stealing two bases, as Carolina stole five bases on the afternoon without any runner caught. This game marked the return of 3B Jheremy Vargas from a recent injury (last played August 25), though it’s been a tough season (.178 average, .567 OS) for the promising 19-year old. DH/INF Branlyn Jaraba and C Alex Hall might not look back as fondly at this game, as they combined to go 0-for-8 with six strikeouts. Next week’s outlook: Carolina (64-56) travels to face Cubs’ Low-A affiliate Myrtle Beach (75-51). Expect RHP Miguel Segura (4.38 ERA; last pitched August 26) or RHP Edwin Jimenez (4.55 ERA; last pitched August 31) to start the first game of the series. 13. 16. Jon Singleton powered Nashville to a 6-5 victory with a homer and four hits. Hedbert Perez and Carolina refused to be denied. Big days from Jeferson Quero and Cam Devanney weren’t enough for Wisconsin and Biloxi. Exciting 2022 second round draft pick Jacob Misiorowski lasted just five batters in his scheduled short debut for the Mudcats, who came back late to defeat Columbia in extra innings. Nashville’s early lead slipped away before the club scored two in the bottom of the 9th to walk off Memphis, the last on a Joey Wiemer full count walk. Wisconsin had no answers against Peoria, giving up 12 runs on 12 hits in a 12-3 defeat. Victor Castaneda kept Biloxi in the game over six solid innings, but the bullpen got rocked in an 8-2 loss to Rocket City. Thursday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Singleton, Perez, Quero, Devanney and Castaneda, with an honorable mention to Brice Turang. Transactions: OF Esteury Ruiz recalled to MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville RHP Luis Perdomo recalled to MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville RHP Noah Zavolas released from AA Biloxi (the 26-year old last pitched on August 5th and went on the season-ending injured list on August 11th) Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 6, Memphis 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds 'Walk' Off Redbirds 1B Jon Singleton (4-for-4, HR, walk, 3 RBIs) did the early heavy lifting, knocking in three runs in his first two at-bats, the latter a two-run bomb in the 3rd inning to stake the Sounds to a 4-0 lead. That’s his 22nd home run of 2022 to go along with an absurd 99 walks. The middle innings saw Memphis grab a 5-4 lead, though Nashville was just waiting for the bottom of the 9th inning to send the home crowd happy. Three consecutive singles from OF Sal Frelick (1-for-4, walk), SS Pablo Reyes (2-for-5, double) and 2B Brice Turang (3-for-5, RBI) tied the game at 5-5 before Memphis intentionally walked Singleton and then accidentally walked OF Joey Wiemer to end the game 6-5. How does Mr. Turang look at second base, you ask?: The victory gives Nashville a 2-1 series lead and keeps the team 2.5 games ahead of Columbus for first place in the division. Three Quick Strikes: A late scratch of RHP Dylan File forced RHP Marcus Walden (3 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks) into starting on short rest, though he managed very well over three shutout innings, before being lifted after two singles opened the 4th inning. RHPs JC Mejia, Hobie Harris and Trevor Kelley combined to throw four scoreless innings of relief, with Kelley earning the win for his effort. Pedro Severino was another bright spot, going 3-for-4 as Nashville outhit Memphis 14-8. RHPs Zack Brown and Jake Cousins struggled a bit in their combined two innings of work, conceding three runs (two earned) and allowing two inherited runners to score. Friday’s outlook: After just four games in AA, 23-year old LHP Robert Gasser (3.82 ERA in High-A/AA) will make his AAA debut for the Sounds, who aim to extend their series lead. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Rocket City 8, Biloxi 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Big Seventh Sink Shuckers Starting RHP Victor Castaneda (6 IP, 2 R, 7 H, 3 BB, 6 Ks) danced through traffic over six innings to give the Shuckers a chance, before the bullpen entered and the wheels came off in the bottom of the 7th inning. The offensive bright spot was SS Cam Devanney (2-for-4, HR, walk, RBI), who walked and scored in the 1st inning, then connected on his 19th homer of 2022 in the top of the 7th inning to tie the game 2-2. LHP Clayton Andrews’ post-injury road back to AAA may appear longer after retiring just two of the seven batters he faced and exiting with the club down 4-2 and the bases loaded. This was his fourth appearance of 2022 and second this year with Biloxi. Don’t worry Clayton – better days are ahead! Three Quick Strikes: Unfortunately, things didn’t get better when RHP Robbie Baker entered in relief of Andrews, as he beaned a batter on his first pitch, then gave up two singles as the deficit ballooned to 8-2. At least RHP Robbie Hitt added a scoreless inning with two strikeouts in his short work. The team went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left ten men on base, but DH/2B Felix Valerio (1-for-2, 2 walks) reached base three times and six Shuckers collected at least one hit on the day. Biloxi’s led every game in the series (2-0 in Game One, 5-1 in Game Two, 1-0 in Game Three), but unfortunately appear to be out-gunned against this strong Rocket City club (73-50 record). Friday’s outlook: LHP Brandon Knarr gets the call to start on Friday, with Biloxi needing a repeat of his last outing (6 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 6 Ks) to avoid a 4-0 series deficit. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Peoria 12, Wisconsin 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: Peoria Pounces on Wisconsin Miscues Wisconsin led this game 3-2 in the 4th inning on the strength of solo shots from DH/C Darrien Miller (1-for-4, HR, walk, RBI) and C Jeferson Quero (3-for-4, HR, walk, 2 RBIs), but the game was all Chiefs from that point. Starting RHP Israel Puello (5 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks) struggled to hold that lead, giving up three consecutive hits in the bottom of the 4th inning as the team fell behind 4-3. Peoria grabbed four unearned runs against RHP Miguel Guerrero in a sloppy 6th inning, then another four runs off of struggling RHP Tyler Gillies in the 7th inning to extend their lead to 12-3. Three Quick Strikes: The Timber Rattlers loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the 4th inning, but collected just one run after two strikeouts and an out on the bases, followed by Manager Joe Ayrault being ejected. There were unfortunately no highlights for OF Jackson Chourio on this 0-for-5 day, but it was a welcome sight to have him back manning center field for the first time since a recent injury. RHP Christian Tripp was solid in 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and 2B Ethan Murray collected two singles on a 2-for-4 day. Friday’s outlook: RHP Alexander Cornielle (3.20 ERA in Low-A/High-A) will make his second High-A start (5 1/3 IP, 2 R, 8 Ks in his first one), trying to lead Wisconsin to a 3-1 series advantage. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 7, Columbia 6 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Perez Hits Tenth Inning Walk-Off in 7-6 Victory The exciting debut of 2022 second round draft pick 20-year old RHP Jacob Misiorowski (1/3 IP, 1 R, 0 H, 4 BB, 0 K) was a bit of a letdown, as he walked four of the five batters he faced and exited after 32 pitches. Of course, it was always going to be a short first appearance for Mr. Misiorowski. Spencer Michaelis (Twitter: @smichaelis234) summarized the performance as follows, “Well Misiorowski didn’t make it out of the 1st inning (pitch count). He got squeezed on a few that Trackman thought were strikes. Including on 3-2 to the lead off. Then he had an auto ball for a BB after a long 3-2 battle. Fastball was *very* lively and touched 100 though. Slider backed up on him a few times but also threw some pretty decent ones. Was very close to a 1-2-3 inning with the tight zone and auto ball. Baseball is a funny game sometimes. Most importantly, his pure stuff does look pretty special.” That said, the GAME was terrific, as Carolina battled back to tie Columbia three times, the last being a two-run 8th inning to send the contest into extras, in which the Mudcats prevailed 7-6 on a DH/OF Hedbert Perez (3-for-5, two doubles, 2 RBIs) run-scoring single to bring home OF Hendry Mendez. Mr. Perez was involved throughout, as he also doubled and scored to tie the game 3-3 in the 2nd inning, then drove home OF Luis Castillo (1-for-4, walk) with an RBI double in the 6th inning to narrow the deficit to 6-4. RHP Alexander Vallecillo (5 IP, 3 R, 8 H, 3 BB, 2 Ks) got the longman’s duty on this day, battling through five innings of three-run ball before exiting with the team down 6-4. The 8th inning rally started with walks by 1B Jesus Chirinos (1-for-3, two walks) and Castillo, followed by run-scoring singles from OF Eduarqui Fernandez (1-for-4, walk, RBI) and 3B Alberis Ferrer (1-for-2, walk, sac fly, 2 RBIs, SB) to knot the game at 6-6. Chirino also singled to open up the bottom of the 10th inning. LHP Pablo Garabitos (3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) collected a deserved win with three shutout innings of work, including not allowing Manfred’s ghost to score in the 10th inning. Three Quick Strikes: RHP Trevor Tietz did very well to induce a groundball double play to strand all three runners left on base by Misiorowski in the 1st inning, but then ran into trouble himself in the 2nd inning, giving up two runs on two hits, a walk and a hit batsmen. Not to be lost in the heroics, 2B Robert Moore smacked his first home run in the Brewers’ organization to tie the game 1-1 in the 1st inning. Obviously working his way back to full strength after a recent absence, this was 2022 first round selection SS Eric Brown Jr.’s first game back in the field, although he went 0-for-4 and exited after eight innings. Friday’s outlook: RHP Max Lazar is scheduled to make his second rehab start with the Mudcats, who seek a win to tie the series 2-2 at home against Columbia. 20. Jackson Chourio was a welcome sight in the Wisconsin lineup and had just enough strength to plant a ball over the left field wall for a key 3-run blast, giving starting Carlos F. Rodriguez more runs than he could possibly need in a 5-2 win. Carolina’s 5-2 victory was a true team effort, with three pitchers making their debut in full season ball and Jesus Chirinos delivering a key two-run double. Joey Wiemer connected on his 20th homer of the year, Justin Jarvis had a strong AA debut in Biloxi and Nick Bennett kept the opposition scoreless for nearly five innings, but these efforts weren’t enough as Nashville and Biloxi lost three games on the day. Sunday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Rodriguez, Chourio, Jarvis, Bennett and Wiemer. Transactions: RHP Caleb Boushley activated from AAA Nashville's 7-day injured list RHP Raul Mendoza released from ACL Brewers Gold After the game, @ARobsBrewCrew got the scoop that 1B Wes Clarke will be promoted to AA Biloxi from High-A Wisconsin, which would be a helpful addition to a depleted Shuckers’ roster Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Durham 4, Nashville 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Come Up Short in Series Finale With both teams struggling to connect with runners in scoring position (combined 0-for-13), this was a contest of which team could hit it out of the park more often (three for Durham, one for Nashville). The Sounds welcomed RHP Caleb Boushley (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) back from a recent injury stint and he gave the team an excellent start with two scoreless innings before giving way to RHP Marcus Walden (4 2/3 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks). OF Joey Wiemer (2-for-4, HR, double, RBI) continued his recent hot stretch, hitting his 5th home run in AAA ball and 20th of the season to give Nashville a 1-0 lead in the top of the 4th inning. However, the Bulls responded with a 2-run blast of their own in the bottom half, a solo shot in the 5th inning and a final solo jack in the 8th inning. The Sounds were down 3-1 with two-on and two-out in the top of the 8th inning, but Wiemer couldn’t come through in his final at-bat (first pitch pop out into foul territory). Despite the loss, Nashville won the series 4-2, although it’s first place lead over the Columbus Clippers was cut to 2.5 games. Three Quick Strikes: Each team pulled off an amazing escape of working around a lead-off triple with no damage, with Walden doing it in the 3rd inning and Durham gunning down OF Matt Lipka (2-for-4, triple, SB) on a fly ball double play at home in the 7th inning. Other than the two long balls, Walden actually threw well, not yielding any walks. However, RHP JC Mejia’s recent funk continues, as he yielded the 8th inning homer and has now given up runs in three straight appearances. OF Esteury Ruiz (2-for-4, SB) extended his hitting streak to 17 consecutive games, although OF Sal Frelick’s unfortunately ended at 12 games. On the bright side, Frelick walked once and didn’t strikeout. Next week’s outlook: Nashville (74-48) returns home after a long road trip to take on Cardinals’ AAA affiliate Memphis (63-59). Expect veteran RHP Josh Lindblom (four runs and 23 strikeouts over last 17 innings pitched) to take the mound in the opening game, looking for his fourth consecutive victory. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Game One Final: Chattanooga 7, Biloxi 3 (in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Game Two Final: Chattanooga 6, Biloxi 0 (in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Biloxi Falls In Both Legs Of Doubleheader With his AA debut about to go off the rails after yielding two 2nd innings runs and a leadoff triple to start the 3rd inning, 22-year old RHP Justin Jarvis (5 IP, 2 R, 6 H, 3 BB, 5 Ks) buckled down to retire nine of the final ten batters he faced, ultimately exiting with the game still tied 2-2. The nightcap saw an even more effective start from LHP Nick Bennett (4 2/3 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 3 BB, 1 WP, 6 Ks), who kept the Lookouts scoreless over nearly five innings of work. Unfortunately, the Shuckers’ offense and bullpen weren’t up to par, as those 2-2 and 0-0 scorelines quickly went to the wayside once the starters exited. After LHP Clayton Andrews ran into trouble in the top of the 6th inning (double, two walks), RHP Arnaldo Hernandez entered with the score tied 2-2, bases full and two outs, only to give up a grand slam to Mike Siani. In the second game, Chattanooga scored all six runs in the top of the 6th inning, three off of RHP Robbie Hitt and three more off of RHP Carlos Luna. The losses mean that the Lookouts took four wins out of five games against Biloxi for the week. Three Quick Strikes: Though they only managed six hits over their 14 innings of work, the Shuckers’ offense wasn’t completely dormant, as C Jason Lopez came through with a 2-RBI infield single in the 2nd inning of Game One to knot things up at 2-2 for awhile. Birthday boy 1B Thomas Dillard (now 25 years old) also added a solo homer to briefly reduce the Game One deficit to 6-3. It’s rough when your 1-and-2 hitters (OF Corey Ray, SS Cam Devanney) go a combined 0-for-12 with six strikeouts, but that’s just how this Sunday went for the Shuckers. Manager Mike Guerrero’s frustration boiled over after two strikeouts in the bottom of the 2nd inning of Game Two, as he was ejected at that point. Next week’s outlook: Biloxi (57-60) hits the road to face a strong Rocket City team (70-50 record for the Angels’ AA affiliate). Expect RHP TJ Shook (4.07 ERA in High-A/AA) to be the opening game starter. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 5, Lansing 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: Wisconsin Wins Series Finale from Lugnuts As always, take some time to watch the video highlights put together by Wisconsin’s terrific media team: DH/OF Jackson Chourio (1-for-2, HR, HBP, 3 RBIs) was slated for only three at-bats in his return from injury, but he was of course essential to a much-needed Timber Rattler victory. Chourio’s 3-run blast in the bottom of the third inning was his fifth in High-A ball and 17th of the year, giving starting RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez (6 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 7 Ks) a nice cushion up 4-0. Of course, the dominant Rodriguez doesn’t require much run support, as he gave up just one run on three hits over six innings, striking out seven Lugnuts. His ERA in five High-A starts is now a terrific 1.78. Things got dicey in the top of the 8th inning against RHP Jeison Pena, who conceded two singles, two walks and a lineout before exiting in favor of RHP Taylor Floyd with the game 4-2 and two runners on base. Pena was aided by C Jeferson Quero throwing out a runner stealing, then Floyd K’d the only batter he faced on four pitches. Quero (2-for-4, HR, RBI) also added a solo homer in the bottom half of the inning. The win enabled Wisconsin to salvage a 2-4 series loss for the week. Three Quick Strikes: RHP James Meeker (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 Ks) pitched a three-up, three-down 9th inning to earn his 12th save of the season, lowering his ERA to 2.70 in the process. 3B Ben Metzinger (1-for-3, HR, walk, RBI) got an opportunity to lead off in this game and made the most of it, hitting a 1st inning homer (his third of the year) to give the Timber Rattlers an early 1-0 lead. After an inexplicable brawl which saw two players ejected on Saturday night, I’m a bit surprised the umpires allowed Lansing reliever Jorge Juan (who yielded the Chourio homer in this one) to remain in the game after he plunked Chourio with the first pitch of his 5th inning plate appearance. Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin (61-58) will bus to play Cardinals’ affiliate Peoria (51-69). RHP Stiven Cruz (0.75 ERA in 12 High-A innings) is scheduled to make his third start for the Timber Rattlers. Carolina Pre-Game Notes Final: Carolina 5, Kannapolis 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Mudcats Leave Kannapolis With Series Tying 5-2 Victory In addition to starting RHP Max Lazar’s (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) return to full season affiliate ball, this game featured the Mudcat debut of RHPs Cameron Wagoner, Arielbi Gonzalez and Yerlin Rodriguez. Wagoner (3 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 7 Ks), selected in the 11th round of the 2022 draft, earned the victory with three shutout innings including an impressive seven strikeouts. The victory earned Carolina a 3-3 series split for the week. Kannpolis took a similar approach to the game, with each of their first three pitchers making Low-A debuts, the last of which getting tagged for Carolina’s first three runs in the 4th and 5th innings, courtesy of a 2B Jadher Areinamo (1-for-3, HBP, RBI) run-scoring single and a clutch two-out, 2-RBI double from 1B Jesus Chirinos (2-for-4, double, walk, 2 RBIs). C Alex Hall (1-for-3, HR, walk, 2 RBIs) extended the lead to a comfortable 5-0 with a two-run shot in the top of the 6th inning. After giving up a two-run homer to tighten the game at 5-2 in the bottom of the 7th inning, Gonzalez (3 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) buckled down to retire the final five batters he faced. It was a mild surprise when Rodriguez got the promotion to Low-A earlier ball in the week, but a look at his game log tells you he’s been effective since a move to the bullpen. His shutout 9th inning earned him a save and keeps him scoreless in 6 2/3 innings (five games) since the shift to full-time relief work. Three Quick Strikes: 3B Branlyn Jaraba (2-for-3, double, HBP, RBI) is justifying his own early-August promotion to the Mudcats, lifting his Carolina average to .306 with an .870 OPS. Yes, a combined 29 strikeouts (14 for Cannon Baller hitters, 15 for Mudcat batters) is now a normal part of baseball at all levels. Being out-hit nine to seven wasn’t a problem for the Mudcats, as Carolina drew more walks (six vs. two) and hit-by-pitches (two vs. zero), whilst going 3-for-8 with runners in scoring position (vs. 1-for-6 for Kannapolis). Unfortunately, we’ve no explanation for the five-game absence of 2022 first round selection SS Eric Brown Jr. Let’s hope it’s short-term in nature and we see him return to action on Tuesday. Next week’s outlook: Carolina (64-56) returns home to face Royals’ Low-A affiliate Columbia (48-71). Expect RHP Fernando Olguin (5.68 ERA) to start Game One, trying to put a rough last appearance behind him. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report.
