OF Jonathan Davis capped off Nashville’s comeback with an RBI single in extra innings. Sizeable early leads for Carolina and Biloxi couldn’t hold up. Antoine Kelly’s 10-K, 1-hit performance wasn’t enough for Wisconsin. Although promising nights turned sour for Carolina, Biloxi and Wisconsin on Thursday night, that means there were a number of solid performances as well. Hopefully the young men can take some inspiration from Nashville, which put men on base all night and eventually snatched victory from defeat. The stars of the night were Wisconsin’s exciting prospect LHP Antoine Kelly, who dutifully bounced back from his shortest stint of the season (3 IP on April 29th) to dominate the TinCaps for 5 innings and AAA Nashville’s bullpen which blanked Norfolk for 5 1/3 innings to give the offense a chance. Game Balls go to Kelly, C Jeferson Quero, 1B Thomas Dillard, RHP Trevor Kelley and OF Jonathan Davis. Transactions: C Jesus Garcia assigned back to ACL Brewers Gold from AAA Nashville (he’d been moved to Nashville 6 days earlier, but didn’t see any action) Game Action: Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Augusta 10, Carolina 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Mudcats Waste Early Lead in 10-5 Loss Things looked rosy early in this game, as RHP Edwin Jimenez worked around a first-inning triple and walk, then six of the first seven Mudcats reached base in the bottom of the inning. The inning’s big hit was C Jeferson Quero’s first home run of 2022, a 3-run blast to score CF Jackson Chourio and 1B Jesus Chirinos. In all, Carolina led 5-0 after the first. Things looked rosy early in this game, as RHP Edwin Jimenez worked around a first-inning triple and walk, then six of the first seven Mudcats reached base in the bottom of the inning. The inning’s big hit was C Jeferson Quero’s first home run of 2022, a 3-run blast to score CF Jackson Chourio and 1B Jesus Chirinos. In all, Carolina led 5-0 after the first. Unfortunately, the Mudcat bats went to sleep from there and could not be awoken when needed, as the team failed to register any hits from the 2nd through the 9th inning, going 0-for-24 in that span. Meanwhile, Augusta clawed it back to 5-3 by the 5th inning and the dam burst against RHP Israel Puello in the top of the 7th inning, when 4 hits and 2 walks gave the GreenJackets a 7-5 lead which it would not relinquish. On some other positive notes, it was great to see RF Hendry Mendez back in action after departing Tuesday’s game early and LHP Jakob Brustoski threw a clean inning to put some early season struggles behind him. Performances of Note: Jeferson Quero – 1-4, HR, 3 RBIs Hendry Mendez – 1-3, BB Jackson Chourio – 1-4, double Jheremy Vargas – 1-4, RBI Edwin Jimenez – 5 IP, 3 R, 6 H, 2 BBs, 1 WP, 2 Ks Israel Puello (Loss) – 1 2/3 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks Jakob Brustoski – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 Ks Friday’s outlook: RHP Alexander Cornielle (1.56 ERA, 1.85 WHIP, 8.3 K/9 in 17 1/3 IP) is expected to make his 5th start, still searching for his first victory of 2022, as the Mudcats aim to take a 3-1 series lead at home against Augusta. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Fort Wayne 4, Wisconsin 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, game details: TinCaps Hold Off Late Rattler Rally It was a classic pitchers’ duel in Appleton, as Wisconsin’s LHP Antoine Kelly and Fort Wayne’s LHP Noel Vela posted nearly identical lines: 5 innings each, zero runs each, 10 strikeouts each. The two young studs didn’t even throw a wild pitch or hit a batter, so the only difference was the 3 hits yielded by Vela and the 1 hit and 1 walk given up by Kelly. This left it to the bullpens and unfortunately the TinCaps had the advantage on this night, though Wisconsin certainly had its chances, leaving 10 men on base and going 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. With Kelly’s exit after 5 innings, Fort Wayne quickly seized its chance, with the second batter (OF Corey Rosier) that RHP Miguel Guerrero faced hitting a first-pitch home run to right center field. Excellent work by RHP Joey Matulovich kept the game at 1-0 until the bottom of the 8th inning, when Wisconsin took 4 walks (the last a full count RBI walk by Miller) to tie it up. However, RHP James Meeker is still searching for his 2020/2021 form and hasn’t found it yet. He opened the 9th inning with a hit-by-pitch, then issued a full count walk and a gave up an infield single to load the bases. Meeker nearly escaped the inning by getting a swinging strike out for the 2nd out. Unfortunately, consecutive singles gave Fort Wayne a 4-1 lead and RHP Robbie Baker came in to strand the remaining two runners, which he successfully did. The Wisconsin half of the 9th inning actually mirrored Fort Wayne’s, with leadoff man Carlos D. Rodriguez reaching via a hit-by-pitch, then 3 walks and another hit-by-pitch bringing the game to 4-3, bases loaded with two outs, before Miller struck out swinging to end the interesting affair. Here’s a summary of the squandered chances on the night: A leadoff first inning single by OF Tristan Peters was wiped out by a strike-em-out, throw-em-out 2nd and 3rd, 2-out situations in the 4th inning and 6th inning both went for naught A bases loaded, 2-out chance in the 8th inning mustered only 1 run The game finished with the bases loaded, Rattlers' unable to get the key hit this time In other notes: It’s great to see Joe Gray Jr. keeping at it while he slowly rediscovers his bat. On this night, he recorded 3 walks, a single and his 7th stolen base of the young season Darrien Miller caught his 4th straight game, as Manager Joe Ayrault must have decided he can benefit from more consistent work behind the plate Recently promoted Micah Bello had a night to forget, going 0-for-4 with 4 strikeouts Performances of Note: Joe Gray Jr. – 1-2, 3 BBs, RBI, SB Darrien Miller – 1-4, RBI, SB Antonio Pinero – 1-3, BB Antoine Kelly – 5 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 10 Ks Joey Matulovich – 2 1/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks James Meeker (Loss) – 2/3 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 K Friday’s outlook: RHP Justin Jarvis (7.91 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, 7.0 K/9 in 19 1/3 IP) seeks to get on track after yielding 5 earned runs and taking losses in each of his last two appearances, as the Timber Rattlers strive for a 3-1 series lead at home against Fort Wayne. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Montgomery 14, Biloxi 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Biloxi’s Early Lead Evaporates in 14-5 Loss Biloxi’s contest in Montgomery paralleled the events in Zebulon, with our squad jumping out to a 4-0 lead by the 4th inning and 5-4 lead in the 6th inning, before the Biscuit deluge. LHP Nick Bennett escaped a bases loaded, 1-out jam in the first inning by inducing a ground ball double play. Consecutive hits to lead off the second inning by OF Joey Wiemer (10th double of the season) and 2B Felix Valerio set up Thomas Dillard to smash his first home run of 2022, a 3-run blast. OF Sal Frelick added an RBI single in the 4th inning, as he continues to hit at every level, stretching the lead to 4-0, but Montgomery got to Bennett to even things up in the bottom half of the inning with 3 hits, a walk, a sacrifice fly and a fielder’s choice which couldn’t catch a runner at home. C Jakson Reetz continues to surprise, parking his 4th home run in just 44 at bats this year to help the club re-take the lead in the 6th inning, but RHP JT Hintzen wasn’t able to hold it in the bottom half. Reetz actually left the game before the bottom of the 7th inning with Biloxi down 7-5, so we’ll need to see whether this was an injury or just a case of Nick Kahle sharing catching duties on the night. After Hintzen exited, Montgomery didn’t let up against the Shuckers’ next three relievers, adding 7 runs to turn it into a rout. Performances of Note: Sal Frelick – 2-5, RBI, BB Cam Devanney – 2-4 Jakson Reetz – 1-3, HR, RBI Thomas Dillard – 1-4, HR, 3 RBIs Joey Wiemer – 1-4, double Felix Valerio – 1-3, BB Nick Bennett – 4 IP, 4 R, 5 H, 4 BBs, 3 Ks JT Hintzen (Loss) – 1 2/3 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 K Robbi Hitt, Zach Vennaro, Nash Walters – combined 2 1/3 IP, 7 R, 8 H, 4 BBs, 1 WP, 2 Ks Friday’s outlook: RHP Carlos Luna (2.12 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 7.4 K/9, in 17 IP) takes his turn, as Biloxi seeks to halt its 4-game losing skid and win its first game in the series in Montgomery. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 4, Norfolk 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details: Sounds Walk Off on Jonathan Davis’ Base Hit The men in Nashville simply enjoy winning too much to give up on this one, with terrific bullpen work keeping the team in it throughout. After the Sounds stranded the bases loaded in the first inning, Norfolk grabbed the lead with a 2nd inning double and then 2-run shot by Rylan Bannon off Nashville starter RHP Caleb Boushley. Nashville tied it back up in the 3rd inning on a 2-run single by C Alex Jackson, plating 2B Mark Mathias and 1B Tyler White who had both singled. Boushley exited with 2-on, 2-out in the 5th inning, but JC Mejia gave up an infield single and walk to allow the Tides to re-take the lead. In the bottom of the 8th inning, Nashville loaded the bases with nobody out on two walks and a Jonathan Davis bunt, but only managed one run on a Brice Turang sacrifice fly. RHP Trevor Kelley was excellent, covering scoreless 9th and 10th innings, with Mathias throwing out Manfred’s ghost at home. xVictory came with Nashville’s own ghost (Weston Wilson) moving to 3rd base on a wild pitch, then scoring on a Jonathan Davis single to left Performances of Note: Alex Jackson – 2-5, double, 2 RBIs Mike Brosseau – 2-5, double Jonathan Davis – 2-4, BB, RBI, SB Caleb Boushley – 4 2/3 IP, 3 R, 7 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks JC Mejia – 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BBs, 2 Ks Luke Barker – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 K Thomas Jankins – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Trevor Kelley (Win) – 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks Friday’s outlook: April’s International League Pitcher of the Month LHP Ethan Small (0.77 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 13.1 K/9 in 23 1/3 IP) makes his first May start as Nashville tries to build a 3-1 series lead at home against Norfolk. After the position player promotions this week (Frelick, Bello, Chourio), I hope we see TJ Shook lead the pitcher promotions next week. I also hope Carolina OF Hendry Mendez is okay despite being subbed out in the 4th inning.

Big-time hits by Eduardo Garcia and Jheremy Vargas bring Carolina back from the brink. Wisconsin can’t hold an early lead. Biloxi’s offense continues to miss Felix Valerio. A rainout saves St. Paul from another defeat to Nashville. Our young Mudcats continue to show resiliency and savvy beyond their years, again coming out on top of a bleak game, this one a 6-4 victory at Down East in extra innings. Kudos to Coach Estevez and his young squad. Unfortunately, Wisconsin took the opposite tack, squandering a 3-0 lead against Peoria, while Biloxi continues to search for its offense sans King Felix. Game Balls go to SS Eduardo Garcia, RHP Miguel Segura, 3B Jheremy Vargas, LHP Andy Otero and LF Tristan Peters. Transactions: IF Mike Brosseau was optioned from MLB Milwaukee to AAA Nashville C Alex Jackson was optioned from MLB Milwaukee to AAA Nashville Though unofficial, prospect whisperer @ARobsBrewCrew noted after the game that OF Sal Frelick is expected to be promoted to AA Biloxi from High-A Wisconsin and that 1B Ernesto Martinez is currently out of Wisconsin’s lineup with a sprained wrist Game Action: Final: Carolina 6, Down East 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Garcia Leads Late Comeback in 6-4 Victory in Extras. his was a series between the Down East Wood Ducks and our beloved Carolina Mudcats, with all six games decided by two runs or less and our team coming out with a 4-2 series victory. Like Friday’s nightcap, the Mudcats faced a formidable deficit, this time down 4-0 entering the 8th inning. But let’s go back to the beginning and acknowledge the work of RHP Miguel Segura, who gave up just three walks and three hits, including an RBI single in the second inning and an RBI double in the fifth inning. Though the Mudcat offense wasn’t ready to produce just yet, Segura was assisted defensively by CF Hedbert Perez throwing out a runner at second base and C Jose Sibrian catching an attempted base stealer in the fourth inning. Trailing 2-0, Segura handed over to RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez, who started poorly (triple, wild pitch, home run) but retired six of the following seven batters to keep Carolina within striking distance, down 4-0. Now back to the heroics. Walks by Sibrian and LF Arbert Cipion brought SS Eduardo Garcia to the place. Despite an 0-2 count, Garcia planted the next pitch over the left-field wall to cut the Wood Duck lead to 4-3. Still down 4-3, this time with two outs and nobody in the top of the ninth inning, 3B Jheremy Vargas came to the plate, hitless to this point in the night. Facing Down East stud 22-year-old LHP Destin Dotson (0.00 ERA, 0.48 WHIP, 14.8 K/9 in 10 1/3 innings entering the contest), the 18-year-old Vargas blasted a 1-0 pitch to center field to knot the contest at 4-4. HP Jakob Brustoski put in his best work of the year, striking out two in the eighth and working around a hit-by-pitch, stolen base, and walk in the ninth inning to bring the game to extra innings. In the tenth, a double by Cipion brought Garcia to the plate with 2-on, 1-out. This time, Garcia again ripped a ball to left field, a 2-run double to deliver Carolina its first lead of the game, 6-4. RHP Trevor Tietz then handled the tenth with aplomb, striking out three hitters around one walk to not even allow Manfred’s ghost to score. That’s Tietz’s 3rd save and fourth straight clean inning. Performances of Note: Eduardo Garcia – 3-5, HR, double, 5 RBIs, SB Arbert Cipion – 2-4, double, walk Jheremy Vargas – 1-4, HR, RBI Miguel Segura – 5 innings, 2 runs, 3 hits, 3 walks, 4 Ks Jakob Brustoski (Win) – 1 2/3 innings, no runs, 1 hit, 1 walk, 1 HBP, 4 Ks Trevor Tietz (Save) – 1 inning, no runs, no hits, 1 walk, 3 Ks Next week’s outlook: Our 11-10 Carolina Mudcats return home for a six-game series against the 12-9 Augusta GreenJackets. Expect RHP Brannon Jordan (3.38 ERA, 1.31 WHIP in 16 innings) to start the opening game, though we’re still wondering about the status of RHP Jefferson Figueroa. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Peoria 6, Wisconsin 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, game details: Peoria Powers Past Wisconsin Down 4-1 in the series, Wisconsin and LHP Russell Smith needed a strong game and initially appeared on course, up 3-0 in the fourth inning. After Smith worked out of two-on situations in the first and third innings, the Timber Rattlers put together two doubles (Sal Frelick, Zavier Warren), a single (Joe Gray Jr.), a walk (Wes Clarke), two stolen bases (Gray twice) and a sacrifice fly (Carlos D. Rodriguez) to take a 3-0 lead. However, Smith wasn’t quite able to work out of a three-on situation in the bottom of the fourth inning. Two walks and an infield single had loaded the bases for Peoria’s 20-year-old SS Masyn Winn, who hit the first pitch, a three-run triple to tie up the contest at 3-3. {Note: We’d have to see the video to understand whether the ball fell between three defenders in shallow right and rolled to the wall or exactly what transpired.} Our shell-shocked Timber Rattlers then called upon RHP Zach Mort, who’d had an excellent month of April (0.00 ERA, 0.63 WHIP in 8 innings) but will want to forget this appearance immediately: Home run to right field Fly out to left field Home run to right-center field Home run to right-center field The Rattlers’ appeared close to finding their inner Mudcat in the 7th inning, with a left field Tristan Peters triple bringing home 2B Ethan Murray with one out. However, the team couldn’t drive him home and fell 6-4 for a crushing series loss (one win, five losses). As much as we emphasize the positives, it’s also important to note possible areas of concern. It is in this vein that we mention that the Chiefs stole another 4 bases in this contest, with nobody caught stealing. That brings Miller’s 2022 stats to an anemic two runners caught vs. 26 stolen bases. Obviously, this will be an area of focus for improvement going forward for the 21-year old. Unfortunately, we’re lacking many video highlights for the good guys this night, so let me post this one of IF Ethan Murray hitting home runs in previous games: Performances of Note: Tristan Peters – 2-4, triple, RBI Joe Gray Jr. – 2-5, double, 2 SBs Sal Frelick – 2-5, double Zavier Warren – 1-4, double, RBI Russell Smith – 4 innings, 3 runs, 3 hits, 5 walk, 1 balk, 2 Ks Zach Mort (Loss) – 1 inning, 3 run, 3 hits, 1 walk, 1 K Robbie Baker – 2 innings, no runs, 3 hits, 1 K Cam Robinson – 1 inning, no runs, no hits, 1 walk, 2 Ks Next week’s outlook: The 12-9 Wisconsin Timber Rattlers return to Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium to take on the 11-10 Fort Wayne TinCaps. RHP TJ Shook (1.37 ERA, 0.86 WHIP in 19 2/3 innings) is the expected starter for the first game, perhaps tag-teaming with RHP Max Lazar. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Pensacola 4, Biloxi 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Shuckers Fall in Sunday’s Game 4-1 LHP Andy Otero did his best to keep his team in the contest, only yielding one run (unearned) before exiting after issuing a full count walk with one out in the sixth inning. Unfortunately, Otero has to wear that unearned run however, as it was on the back of his own fielding error and two walks to load the bases with nobody out in the third inning, escaping with a run-scoring double play and a strikeout. Offensively, some solid Shuckers’ chances came and went early in the contest, with CF Joey Wiemer and DH Luis Urias stranded at second and third after a Wiemer double (first inning) and LF Noah Campbell left at second base after his 1-out double (third inning). Down 1-0, Otero handed over RHP JT Hintzen, who gave up a two-run homer to his first batter, then another double and single to leave Biloxi in a 4-0 hole. The team clawed one run back in the bottom of the 8th inning on a Urias RBI groundout to score 2B Gabe Holt (who’d singled), but that was all the offense could muster on this night. In all, Biloxi can be pleased with its pitching in the 3-3 series tie, giving up just nine runs in the last five games of the week. To balance out the Sunday video highlights, here’s Holt making a nice play in the second inning: Performances of Note: Noah Campbell – 1-3, double, walk Joey Wiemer – 1-3, double Gabe Holt – 1-3 Andy Otero (Loss) – 5 1/3 innings, 2 runs (1 earned), 3 hits, 3 walks, 1 WP, 3 Ks Nash Walters – 1 inning, no runs, 1 hit, no walks Zach Vennaro – 1 inning, no runs, no hits, no walks, 2 Ks Next week’s outlook: The 12-9 Biloxi Shuckers head out for the week to face the 9-11 Montgomery Biscuits. RHP Tyler Herb (1.96 ERA, 1.20 WHIP in 18 1/3 innings) is expected to start the first game in the series. Nashville Pre-Rain Media Notes Final: Cancelled due to wet grounds. Game will not be made up Via the Sounds’ website, rain details: Sounds Finale in St. Paul Canceled Due to Wet Grounds Next week’s outlook: First place Nashville (16-7) will be home this week, taking on the 12-12 Norfolk Tides. We’ll see which of RHPs Luis Perdomo, Jason Alexander (2.70 ERA, 1.30 WHIP in 20 innings) or RHP Josh Lindblom gets the honor of starting the opening game. When you give up 5 runs before recording your second out, then keep the other team scoreless for the next 5 2/3 innings, that’s some nice resilience. Way to go Israel Puello. He truly earned the Win this day. Too bad Wisconsin (lost) and Nashville (tie game, continuing today) couldn’t hold those leads. 1 hit, 1 walk and 18 strikeouts for Biloxi’s hitters?! That’s rough. Hopefully Valerio and Reetz are back in the lineup tonight.

After collectively scuffling for four days, Milwaukee’s minor league pitchers stepped to the fore on Thursday night, giving up a combined 6 runs across four 9-inning contests, with Biloxi leading the way with a shutout at home. Nashville and Wisconsin were also winners this evening, although Carolina was done in by missed opportunities in the early innings. Despite pitchers only constituting 2 of the Brewers’ top 13 prospects (including Aaron Ashby – so let’s call it 1 of 12) in our Brewer Fanatic Pre-Season Top 25 Prospect Poll, those apparently under-appreciated arms have actually been doing the heavy lifting throughout this month: AAA Nashville – easily the top ERA in the 20-team International League at 2.52 (second place is Iowa at 3.15, third is Toledo at 3.53) AA Biloxi – also easily tops the ERA listing in the 8-team Southern League at 3.19 (second place is this week’s opponent Pensacola at 3.68) High-A Wisconsin – a more-than-respectable 6th place in ERA in the 12-team Midwest League at 3.97, skewed by an 18-run affair last week Low-A Carolina – not applicable. They’re young! ? Thursday night’s starting pitchers combined to cover 22 1/3 innings, yielding only 3 runs, 14 hits and 6 walks, while striking out 24 opposing hitters. Combined with solid relief pitching (12 2/3 innings, 2 runs), our hurlers are posting notice that they’re ready to move up the prospect lists. Of course, some offense was required as well and tonight was about solo homers: 2 by Weston Wilson and 1 each for Wes Clarke, Brice Turang, Jon Singleton and Freddy Zamora. And let’s not forget Antonio Pinero and his 2-run homer for Wisconsin. Game Balls this night go to RHP Victor Castaneda, LHP Brandon Knarr, RHP Caleb Boushley, RHP Ryne Moore and LF Weston Wilson. Transactions: None Game Action: Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Down East 2, Carolina 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Carolina Shut Out 2-0 at Down East Although the squad had four promising scoring opportunities, none came to fruition on this frustrating night for our young Mudcats: Hedbert Perez was thrown out at home on Eduardo Garcia’s 1st inning single Leadoff 2nd inning hits by Jesus Chirinos and Oswel Leones produced nothing A leadoff Jesus Chirinos single and two-out Zack Raabe walk didn’t result in any run in the 7th inning A Hedbert Perez single and a Eduardo Garcia triple in the 8th inning didn’t result in a run, undone by an intervening double play RHP Ryne Moore’s first inning had a bit of everything: infield single, hit-by-pitch, throwing error, two stolen bases, walk, regular single, strikeout. But thankfully the damage was only one run, with 3B Luis Silva throwing out one Wood Duck at home. The second inning was a bit unfair to Mr. Moore, with a 2-out walk and a balk (after 2 strikeouts to open the frame) setting the stage for a run-scoring single to put the deficit at 2-0. Thankfully, C Jeferson Quero’s second throwing error in the first three innings did not cost Moore and the Mudcats a run in the 3rd inning. In all, Moore only yielded 2 hits and recorded 9 strikeouts in his 6 innings of solid work, but unfortunately had to take the loss. LHP Pablo Garabitos and RHP Junior Montero continued to baffle Down East hitters thereafter, but the Carolina offense couldn’t quite come through. Performances of Note: Eduardo Garcia – 2-4, triple Jesus Chirinos – 2-4 Hedbert Perez – 1-4, SB Ryne Moore (Loss) – 6 innings, 2 runs, 5 hits, 2 walks, 1 HBP, 1 balk, 9 Ks Pablo Garabitos – 1 inning, zero runs, 1 hit, 2 Ks Junior Montero – 1 inning, zero runs, zero hits, 1 walk, 2 Ks Friday’s outlook: Today’s essentially a doubleheader, as the squads need to complete the remaining 8 1/2 innings from Tuesday’s contest before moving on to a 7-inning second game. RHP Israel Puello is slated to start one of the games, as he tries to forget his last appearance (7 earned runs in 2 innings). My money is on RHP Edwin Jimenez making the other start, with RHP Jefferson Figueroa also throwing a few innings. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 6, Peoria 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, game details: Knarr K’s Seven in Six Scoreless Innings for Rattlers Win at Peoria LHP Brandon Knarr decided to make a late run for Brewer Minor League Pitcher of the Month, blanking the Chiefs for 6 innings to lower his ERA to 1.61 after four terrific appearances this month, with 27 strikeouts in 22 1/3 innings. It’s clear his mind is on earning a promotion to AA Biloxi before his 24th birthday coming in early June. The Knarr-ly effort was necessary, as the only thing which separated the Timber Rattlers and Chiefs after six innings was Wes Clarke’s solo home run on a 2-0 count in the 4th inning. Thankfully, Peoria’s impressive 21-year old RHP Dionys Rodriguez exited after six innings and Wisconsin immediately feasted on the relief core, starting with a Carlos D. Rodriguez single and then Antonio Pinero’s first home run of 2022, matching his total of last year. Two walks and a hit-by-pitch set up Clarke (single) and Zavier Warren to drive in 2 more runs and extend the lead to 6-0. RHPs Kent Hasler and RHPs Cam Robinson weren’t as sharp as usual (4 hits, 2 runs in 2 innings), but let’s blame it on rustiness. Hasler has only thrown 4 2/3 innings thus far and Robinson hadn’t pitched in a full week. Performances of Note: Wes Clarke – 2-5, HR, 3 RBIs Antonio Pinero – 2-4, HR, 2 RBIs Zavier Warren – 2-4, double, 1 RBI Sal Frelick – 1-4, walk, SB Brandon Knarr (Win) – 6 innings, zero runs, 2 hits, 1 walk, 7 Ks Kent Hasler – 2 innings, 1 run, 2 hits, zero walks, 3 Ks Friday’s outlook: Always-impressive LHP Antoine Kelly (2.62 ERA in 13 2/3 innings) makes his 4th start of the year as Wisconsin tries to even this week’s series in Peoria at 2 games apiece. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 3, Pensacola 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Shuckers Shutout Wahoos For Second Night Manager Mike Guerrero must have played a hunch. Moving SS Freddy Zamora up to 2nd in the lineup in spite of his .204 AVG / .245 OBP / .245 SLG slash line entering the game, Zamora came through in the bottom of the first inning with his first home run of the season. And for RHP Victor Castaneda, that was the only run he needed. After escaping a first-and-third, 1-out situation in the 1st inning by striking out Griffin Conine and inducing an infield pop up from old friend Luis Aviles Jr., Castaneda only allowed one more baserunner to reach over the next 4 innings. Oh, and he picked that runner off of first base to keep things neat and clean. Apparently tiring in the 6th inning by giving up consecutive walks, RHP Luis Contreras picked him up by stranding both runners and also blanking Pensacola in the top of the 7th inning. Being too close for comfort at 1-0 with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th inning, the Shuckers’ bats woke up, with a Cam Devanney single plating Brent Diaz (who had doubled) and then Jakson Reetz (don’t underestimate this man and his 1.096 OPS) scoring Devanney to extend the lead to 3-0. Thereafter, RHP Nash Walter and RHP Zach Vennaro continued the strong work to complete the shutout. Performances of Note: Jakson Reetz – 2-3, double, RBI Freddy Zamora – 1-4, HR, RBI Cam Devanney – 1-3, RBI Brent Diaz – 1-3, double Thomas Dillard – 1-3 Victor Castaneda (Win) – 5 1/3 innings, zero runs, 3 hits, 2 walks, 5 Ks Luis Contreras – 1 2/3 innings, zero runs, zero hits, 1 walk, 2 Ks Nash Walters – 1 inning, zero runs, zero hits, zero walks, 1 K Zach Vennaro (Save) – 1 innings, zero runs, 1 hit, zero walks Friday’s outlook: LHP Nick Bennett is scheduled to take this one, looking to bounce back from his last outing (5 runs in a loss), as Biloxi aims to seize a 3-1 series lead over Pensacola. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 6, St. Paul 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details: Solo Shots Power Sounds Past St. Paul A late switch saw RHP Caleb Boushley called to start a day earlier than expected, but the Hortonville and La Crosse man was unfazed and up to the challenge. Of course, it helps when super-prospect Brice Turang gets things rolling with a first-inning blast, his first of the year. In fact, it was a pleasant night of solo efforts, with four of the Sounds’ six runs coming on homers, including Weston Wilson extending the lead to 2-0 in the 2nd inning. Nashville then extended it to 4-0 thanks to a Pablo Reyes single, 4 walks and a wild pitch. It may have been a bigger inning if not for St. Paul gunning down Turang at home on an infield grounder. Boushley’s sole blemish was a run in the bottom of the third inning, in part created by the speed of the Twins’ own super-prospect Royce Lewis (infield single, stolen base, scored on a single). Jon Singleton joined the bachelor party in the 5th inning with a solo shot to authoritatively end his 0-for-19 skid at the plate, pushing the lead to 5-1. St. Paul managed to cut that deficit to 5-2 in the bottom of the 6th inning, with two singles and a double off RHP Thomas Jankins, but impressive field work caught a Saint at 3rd base to lessen the threat (LF Weston Wilson to SS Brice Turang to 3B Andruw Monasterio). In the 8th inning, Wilson added his second homer of the night for the 6-2 final margin. RHPs Zack Brown, Pete Strzelecki and Luis Perdomo were again solid to keep the Saints’ bats quiet, as Strzelecki and Perdomo in particular battle for the coveted Brewers’ Minor League Relief Pitcher of the Month award. Performances of Note: Weston Wilson – 2-4, 2 HRs, 2 RBIs Pablo Reyes – 2-5, 1 SB Jon Singleton – 1-3, HR, walk, 2 RBIs Brice Turang – 1-4, HR, walk, RBI Andruw Monasterio – 1-2, 2 walks, 2 SBs Caleb Boushley – 5 innings, 1 run, 4 hits, 1 walk, 1 balk, 3 Ks Zack Brown – 1 inning, zero run, zero hits, zero walks, 1 K Pete Strzelecki – 1 inning, zero runs, zero hits, zero walks, 1 K Luis Perdomo – 1 inning, zero runs, zero hits, zero walks Friday’s outlook: LHP Ethan Small (0.49 ERA in 18 1/3 innings) got an extra day of rest in advance of his 5th start of the month. Nashville needs a win to even this week’s series in St. Paul 2-2. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Good luck tonight, Brewers’ affiliates!
