  1. After successfully peppering the zone thru 3 scoreless frames (40 pitches, 31 strikes), Hernandez conceded 2 runs on 4 hits in the 4th inning, with 2 outs fortunately occurring on the bases (player trying to stretch a single; caught stealing). Mudcats now lead only 3-2, entering the 5th. Melvin is at 60 pitches thru 4.
  2. RHP Alexander Cornielle (1.32 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 9.5 K/9 in 27.1 IP) has been AA Biloxi’s top starting pitcher in this early season and he gets the chance to lead them to a 2-1 series lead at Montgomery. 1B Luke Adams has homered in back-to-back games and has a 14-game on-base streak.
  3. High-A Wisconsin trails Beloit 2 games to 0 in their home series, but have solid RHP Tyson Hardin (1.42 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 9.7 K/9 in 31.2 IP) starting tonight. 1B Blake Burke’s hit streak is now 11 games.
  4. Just 9 pitches for Melvin in his 2nd frame (yes!), then the Mudcats load the bases on 2 walks a Di Turi single, pushing across 2 runs (sac fly, Made 2-out RBI infield single). 3-0 Carolina after 2 innings.
  5. A 14-pitch first inning (11 strikes, 2 Ks) for Melvin Hernandez, extended 2 pitches by an error by second baseman Di Turi. Hopefully he can cover 6 frames for this Mudcats’ team. Now for the offense to erupt.
  6. Today’s doubleheader sees the Low-A Mudcats host Fayetteville, with Carolina leading the series 1-0. RHP Melvin Hernandez (2.33 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 7.3 K/9 in 27.0 IP) is now the 2nd-youngest pitcher in the 12-team Carolina League (a Royals’ prospect joined this level). DH Marco Dinges’ 2-homer game yesterday has him well atop the league in OPS (1.095 in 92 PAs).
  7. - INF/OF Tyler Black sent on rehab assignment to ACL Brewers
  8. With all the MILB roster shuffling today (Shears is back!, Wisconsin also gets Tanner Gillis!, etc.), Carolina's now left with 14 pitchers, 4 of whom threw yesterday or started on Tuesday: Chandler Welch, Travis Smith, Jesus Flores, Sam Garcia. Boy, let's hope we don't burn through many pitchers in today's doubleheader, given that they've still got 3 more games in front of them Friday-Sunday.
  9. Dominant RHP Jacob Misiorowski (1.49 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 11.5 K/9 in 42.1 IP) gets the early start today as AAA Nashville aims to extend its series lead to 3-0 in Memphis. 2B Anthony Seigler’s hit streak is up to 10 games, with a season OPS of .919.
  10. RHP Coleman Crow (4.2 scoreless IP, 8 Ks last week) and AA Biloxi look to double their series lead at Montgomery tonight. Our offense leads the 8-team Southern League in runs, doubles, homers, RBIs, walks, Ks (least), OBP, SLG, total bases and HBP, while Montgomery leads in hits, triples, AVG and GIDP (least).
  11. Just 34 pitches (and just 17 strikes) over 2 scoreless innings for Aaron Ashby: 1 double, 1 single, 2 walks, 1 K. I figure he’ll need the whole month of rehab to get to the point of being an effective MLB reliever. He’s either “right” or atrocious, based on what we saw in 2024. So let’s get him right.
  12. After winning Game 1 earlier today, the Sounds get a chance to double up at Memphis behind rehabbing LHP DL Hall. C Anthony Seigler had 3 hits and 4 RBIs in that opening game. SS Freddy Zamora enters for Clarke as the only lineup change.
  13. So that error forced Broca to throw 9 more pitches and concede an RBI single. Gotta bring in another arm now. Still 2 outs in 6th inning. Wisconsin trails 12-6.
  14. Jeferson Figueroa went 50 pitches in relief and now Jesus Broca is at 58 pitches, only for a Juan Baez error to extend the 6th inning. Rough. Wisconsin trails 11-6 after Areinamo homered and Beloit’s wild relief pitcher allowed in 2 more runs.
  15. Solid line for Aaron Civale (5 shutout innings, 2 singles, 1 BB), though I suspect we want to see more Ks (2) and ground balls (4 of 14 batted balls). Velocity peaked at 93.5mph over 60 pitches. Gotta figure one more rehab start, right?
  16. Seigler: HR, 3B, 1B, BB, 4 RBIs - close en enough to a cycle for me
  17. Hmmm. The Patricio Aquino spot start didn’t work out: 6 runs, 35 pitches in the 1st inning. Odds of a position player pitching just increased to 85% in this one.
  18. High-A Wisconsin needs some immediate revenge to even their home series against Beloit 1-1, with RHP Patricio Aquino (1.00 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, 5.0 K/9 in 18 IP) getting the somewhat surprising start (max pitch count thus far in 2025: 53 on April 12). DH/1B Blake Burke’s hit streak is up to 10 games.
  19. After a rainout yesterday, AAA Nashville will play 2 games at Memphis today, welcoming recently-signed Bobby Dalbec as a right fielder in Game One. RHP Aaron Civale makes his second rehab start (4 scoreless innings last week).
  20. The Low-A Mudcats host Astros’ affiliate Fayetteville this week, with the series kicking off at 11:05 CST today after a rainout yesterday. RHP Travis Smith (3.94 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 6.8 K/9 in 16 IP) starts the opening game. 3B Jesus Made’s on-base streak is at 24 games.
  21. High-A Wisconsin (14-19) hosts Marlins’ affiliate Beloit this week, coming off 3 straight series draws but still searching for their first series win. RHP Chandler Welch could use a turnaround (5.72 ERA, 1.84 WHIP, 4.8 K/9 in 28.1 IP). 2B Jadher Areinamo is tied for 3rd in the Midwest League in hits.
  22. The 23-16 Nashville Sounds welcome INF/OF Bobby Dalbec (1.050 OPS in 48 PAs, with a 2 BB / 16 K ratio; .460 xwOBA according to Statcast, highest in AAA) to the organization. They play at Cardinals’ affiliate Memphis, with Aaron Civale making his 2nd rehab start (4 shutout innings last week).
  23. First place Biloxi is in Montgomery this week to face the Rays’ AA affiliate. RHP KC Hunt (5.40 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 7.8 K/9 in 26.2 IP) is still searching for his dominant 2024 form. Here’s 3B Brock Wilken’s slash line over his last 10 games: .382 AVG / .476 OBP / .912 SLG in 42 PAs.
  24. - INF/OF Roderick Flores assigned to ACL Brewers (not AAA Nashville, which MILB.com initially showed) from DSL Brewers Gold
  25. What’s our threshold? 5+ games below .500 and 10+ games behind the Cubs on July 30?
