  1. This is a pretty big series in my opinion--I've been watching the Giants all year and I don't think they're gonna go away in the wild card race. I don't think either us or them will actually make the playoffs unless either team deals with some sizeable holes via the trade market, but it's still a bigger series than I expected on Opening Day at AT&T Park. (Can't wait to wear my Cerveceros' t-shirt around town tomorrow!)
  2. You know, I'm pretty apathetic about it--it's sad and strange and surprising, but the awesome MJ has been gone a long, long time ([/cliche]) and I feel more like some bizarre William Hung-type sideshow died today, not the amazing performer and worldwide cultural icon of my youth. I'll be interested to see what happened. So young.
  3. Drudge is reporting that he's dead. Wow. 50 years old.
  4. Last night FSN showed a graphic that had the pitching matchups as Gallardo vs Cain, McClung vs Zito and Suppan vs Sanchez. Huh, I saw Lincecum on Sunday on Yahoo today but the Giants' website confirns that Lincecum goes Monday against the Cardinals and we get Sanchez...a huge swing of a break for us.
  5. I feel the same way. He made a perfectly valid and very good point about a decision by the manager and his decision to put the worst pitcher in our bullpen in a one run game. I mean if we're cracking down on posts like that, why even have a game thread? In retrospect, I should've kept my mouth shut and handled it privately with bklyn,Dealing with it publicly or privately is of no matter. The issue is that you felt the need to deal with it.He's a moderator, it's his job. The moderators here are the ones that keep this place from devolving into the maelstrom of jsonline. The rules about "game over" posts in IGTs are pretty clear here, whether you agree with them or not (I personally don't, but it's a small quibble for such a great well-run site/forum).
  6. Apparently CPR was performed in the ambulance. This would be a surprising end for one of the more bizarre, talented, and, in my opinion, ill celebrities of my lifetime: http://www.tmz.com/2009/06/25/michael-jackson-rushed-to-the-hospital/
  7. Anyway, I agree that Burns mostly acquitted himself well (prettier than any recent Parra outing at least), and Smith has been pretty intriguing. Can't say I'm too eager to see Narveson in anything but mop-up any time soon, however. Ugh. Now Cain and Lincecum coming to town--can't wait to see the bats try to turn it around versus that.
  8. Wow, 5-10 during inter-league. Embarrassing. And I've got a lot of friends who are fans of the Tigers, and especially the Twins and Whte Sox (of course, none that are Indians' fans), so I'll be hearing about this all year.
  9. Burns Narveson Stetter Smith Wow, look at that. Can you imagine being told these would be our pitchers on June 25th on April 7?
  10. When I saw Narveson come back out for the 7th after we pull within one I got as frustrated as I've been all season with Macha. Well, let's hope the bleeding gets stanched here.
  11. To be fair, with some of those calls late yesterday, I'd be confused by the offsides rule, too. I agree that a performance like that might help Gooch squeeze some more bones out of Fenerbahce at the least. I was really hoping to see him sign with Fulham.
  12. I was arguing with some guys over this today...I think given the level of the competition and the talent of the other side and the performance displayed by the US, this is almost definitely the biggest win I've seen from the US since I started following them in the 1990 WC, and that includes the '02 knockout victory against the Tricolores (which I would probably mark as "best"--that was just too much fun for a variety of reasons) http://msn.foxsports.com/soccer/story/9727634/Biggest-U.S.-win-ever?-You-better-believe-it-&gt1=39002 Now, considering the age of our guys, this could really be an exciting portend. That said, RyDogg is right to temper things by remembering how bad they looked just last week.
  13. That was a real "Amazing Grace" kinda moment, or at least an "In My Hour of Darkness" one. I was thiiiiiis close to bumping the vent thread after those Hart and Cameron outs in the 8th...they just seemed so redolent of this stretch's offensive woes. And then, the heavens broke apart!
  14. To be fair, if I was at the park watching this one, during this particular stretch, I'd be a loud drunk, too. C'mon Brewers! Let's get something going with these last four outs! The Cubs and Cards have lost, the bullpen's done their job, let's get it going.
  15. Who's to say? Italy couldn't close the deal against an Egypt team that the US throttled, and got did by the Brazilians, and these were the defending WC champs and Euro quarter-finalists. I just want to see the US make the knockout stage again next year, hopefully maybe even a win, and as ugly as those losses were against the two of the better squads in the world, this win over the world's best makes me think those relatively-modest goals are feasible.
  16. Wow! Huge upset. Who were those guys?!? DeMerit and Gooch deserve our finest meats and cheeses, what fantastic defense. I have to think they'll lose against the Brazilians (presumably) this Sunday, but then again, this tournament has already seen the nearly miraculous twin events of the 6-0 goal swing this past weekend and then today's defeat of the top European dogs on a neutral field in an international tournment. Regardless, I'm much more amped for the World Cup next year now than I was just about a week ago.
  17. Some of the comments on Reynolds' blog are great. This one in particular is tremendous (dare I say Ken Tremendous):
  18. All jokes aside, I'm pretty glad for this since I was always fretting I'd accidentally pick up that third strike without realizing it
  19. This article from New York magazine a few weeks back upon the hiring of Jon Gruden to replace Tony Kornheiser which gladly notes how "the geeks" are starting to take over the dominion of the cliche-spouting ex-jocks seems to fit here.
  20. Another NSBB classic: Wow. Deluded much? The guy testified before congress under oath.
  21. Selig talked about this on the Dan Patrick show as well...how amphetimines and recreational drugs were as big if not bigger problems and as much a detriment to the credibility of the game. Intimated "Cocaine Molly": "We had issues in our clubhouse in Milwaukee!" Of course, he was actively trying to distract from the steroid issue, but I hear him.
