  1. When the Sounds are good, they're really good. Lately, that typically involves a Josh Lindblom start. I spoke to it at the end of yesterday's report and I wasn't lying - Lindblom is our man. He is pitching lights out baseball right now. Oh, and geez, Sal Frelick extended his on-base streak with yet another home run - his second in two nights. Tonight's ding dong was the three-run variety. The Magic Number for a Sounds playoff extravaganza is now a mere three games. I can taste it and it is sweeeeet. Transactions: RHP Jason Alexander was optioned back to the Nashville Sounds from the Milwaukee Brewers Final: Nashville 17, Louisville (Reds) 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, please visit and review: Lindblom, Sounds Dominate Louisville - Nashville's Magic Number Moves to Three After Crushing the Bats Joey Wiemer absent for the fourth consecutive game? No problem. The Sounds poured it on with 14 hits and 17 runs in yet another incredible Josh Lindblom pitching performance. He is rolling and it is wonderful. There were so many supporting roles in this epic performance - a performance that even included an under-the-radar (somehow!) immaculate inning from RHP Cam Robinson to close this one out. It's not often a nine pitch, nine strike, three strikeout close-out is somehow floating in the dust as an afterthought. This shan't happen here, fine sirs! Oh NO! It shan't! Three Quick Strikes: 1) As noted above in the title: Frelick continued his run of greatness. My word it has been something to watch the run he's been on since he returned to Biloxi off IL way back on July 6th. 38 consecutive games on base is bananas at any level of baseball. Dominating at a higher rate of impact after each promotion is also bananas. This is top 20 MLB prospect stuff, folks. Flat out. This is electric. Soak it up while you can. The ball looked off speed coming toward the plate. It certainly did not leaving Frelick's bat: 2) Catcher Brian Navarreto is one of my favorite Sounds players. He is almost entirely under the radar due to the vast depth of catching across the system and, frankly, the bigger names and the fact he's yet another Minor League journeyman making due with Nashville in 2022. But, I swear to you dear readers, every time he plays the game of baseball he impresses me - with his size, his agility, his arm, and his bat. Couple that with his incredible demeanor and persona (he makes for such joyously fun interviews), and he just easily became one of my favorite men on the team. A 2-for-5, 3 R, 5 RBI, 1 HR night just doesn't surprise me. He's only played in 39 games. He's only had just over 100 AB's. I don't care. I'll take him to my diamond any day of the week. I see you, Mr. Navarreto. Thank you for your efforts. And, thank you for your personality: 3) An immaculate closing inning from Robinson? Check. Multiple hit performances from Brice Turang, Pedro Severino, Jonny Davis, Weston Wilson , and Navarreto? Check. 8-for-14 with RISP? Check. A No-Hitter through five complete innings? Check. Magic Number reduced to three games? Check. This 2022 Sounds season is such a treat. I am here for every step of the remaining journey. Let's go! We'll get another chance to see LHP Robert Gasser in a pivotal match-up tomorrow as he takes on fellow lefty, and former Mariners 2019 2nd Round pick, Brandon Williamson . It will be interesting to see how manager Rick Sweet sets his line-up. I'll be tuning in. I smell the post-season and my eyes remain on the prize. 3. In yet another key game in the Sounds deep playoff push, a cellar dwellar again proved to be the thorn in Nashville's side. I don't know what it is, but I have yet to see an easy game played versus Charlotte or Louisville. So it goes in a baseball season. Let's get into the quick recap. Transactions: 9/19: (late transaction) C Nick Kahle was assigned to the Nashville Sounds from the Biloxi Shuckers RHP Justin Topa was was optioned to the Nashville Sounds by the Milwaukee Brewers Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Louisville (Reds) 10, Nashville 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, please visit and review: Sounds Falter in Louisville - Nashville's Magic Number Remains at Five to Win Division A bases loaded one out situation in the top of the eighth inning fell short when INF Cam Devanney grounded into a first pitch, broken bat, ground ball to the Bats shortstop. This was truly an unfortunate end after INF Patrick Dorrian had just worked an 0-2 count to a 10-pitch walk to load them up. A chance to take the lead for the first time or, in the very least, continue chipping away ended in a fizzle and the Sounds trailed 7-5. It would officially get away from them after RHP Luis Contreras and LHP Ethan Small (who clearly continues to scuffle) gave up three more runs combined in the next half inning to complete the final score. Three Quick Strikes: 1) OF Sal Frelick extended his on base streak to 37 games (!!) with a double and a two-run line drive home run over the right field wall. This is the longest current active streak in the International League and the second longest of the season. I don't know about you, but I am really really looking forward to Frelick's opportunity at the MLB level. He has done everything and more in his 2022 Minor League season and I'm just not sure what more there is to prove. If the plan is to wait for 2023, the Sounds will consider themselves extremely lucky to have him for a hopeful playoff push. 2) A big tip of the cap is in order for RHP Robbie Baker . It's hard to fathom he made his Triple-A debut tonight considering where his stuff was at earlier in the year in High-A Wisconsin. This being said, and I alluded to it in a couple earlier season reports, the stuff is there to succeed at a higher clip. He pitches with violence and a clear competitiveness. He's an absolute gamer. Aside from a lead-off home run blast over the wall in right field he picked it up, as did the gloves around him, and he turned in a successful first outing. As an everyday fan of the Brewers Minor Leagues, it was a proud moment for me to see him make his debut. 3) I rarely ever question Triple-A legendary manager Rick Sweet and his incredible staff but one has to wonder what the thinking was in the bottom half of the eighth inning. RHP Luis Contreras was left in to face multiple lefty bats when Small was clearly available in the bullpen. Contreras gave up a walk, a shift-beating single, and another single before he was pulled for Small...who faced a righty. It may not have meant anything in the end, there was likely a rationale beyond my scope, but it certainly didn't work out. That was the game right there. And, well, sometimes you just take the frustrating loss and move on to the next. Tonight was that kind of night. I am putting full faith in another quality start from AAAA stalwart, RHP Josh Lindbolm . Constantly under the radar. Constantly overlooked. Almost always showing up and shutting it down. Let's knock that magic number down a notch tomorrow. Lindbolm is our man. 5. I am at the same point of reflection on Sal Frelick’s overall impact as I was way back on Michael Harris II’s impact when he played and dominated for the Double-A Mississippi Braves. Simply put: Frelick has done more than enough to demonstrate he could have legitimate real impact at the MLB level. Harris II routinely did the same - it was uber-apparent every time the Shuckers faced him, he was a game wrecker. In every aspect of the term. There obviously isn’t a causal relationship here (there never is) but given the success we’ve seen for the Atlanta Braves with both Michael Harris II and more recently call-up, Vaughn Grissom (who I also saw in his brief Mississippi Braves tenure), it begs to ask the question: In a season where the Brewers have been lauded for their ‘faster promotions than their historical status quo’ efforts, it certainly is a worthwhile consideration to propose “Is it fast enough?” There are many factors to consider here, and just maybe the team sees that this squad is better served to punt meaningful promotions until 2023 and beyond (especially given the ongoing key pitching injuries and Houser’s ugly season all things considered), but it is certainly worth looking at the recent successes and turnarounds we’ve witnessed in the World Series Champs organization. Their aggressiveness and willingness to Buck the status quo is appearing to serve them yet again. Meanwhile, I struggle to make sense of what exactly it is the Brewers are trying to accomplish in 2022. I maintain this position even if they manage to defy the odds and make the Playoffs. Anyhow, go Sounds!

  7. 5 of his past 6 outings scoreless for RHP Arnaldo Hernandez is another late-season Shuckers storyline to uplift and inspire (granted the sole blemish was a 4 run, 5 hit affair in 2 IP) RHP Harold Chirino has been walking a batter an inning in August but he’s been walking that tightrope quite effectively considering the results. He has some pretty intriguing stuff and it feels like a couple minor tweaks and adjustments could really make him a serious late inning threat. He hits 97-99mph with regularity. Still just 24 yo. It feels like, given his improvements as a whole in 2022, next season is a pretty significant one for the young hurler.

  9. The headline says it all. Sal Frelick is an on base machine. His key three-run homer not only extended his personal on base streak to 31 games (second in the International League at present), it gave the Sounds a 4-2 lead. Clutch stuff from the young stud. Esteury Ruiz broke the Sounds single game steals record with five stolen bases by the fourth inning. Those early 1980's Sounds teams were legendary. I tip my cap to Otis Nixon's record that held for decades, but, I have to think Ruiz's record will hold for even longer. My goodness. Let's get into the reports. Transactions: None Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 12, Jacksonville (Marlins) 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, please visit and review: Sal Frelick Homers Twice as Sounds Blast Past Jumbo Shrimp - Nashville Extends Lead atop International League West Division to 3.5 Games 18 hits. 12 runs. This is the Sounds offense I've grown to love throughout the 2022 season. They have so much juice throughout their lineup - this is possible on any given night. With another Columbus Clipper loss, the Sounds push their division lead back to 3 1/2 games. A special mention will go to RHP Victor Castaneda and his quality start in his first Triple-A start of 2022: 6 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 3 ER, 2 K. RHP's Lucas Erceg and Jake Cousins each tacked on scoreless frames in the 8th and 9th innings, respectively, to close out the victory. Three Quick Strikes: 1) One of the most impressive facets of Sal Frelick's 2022 season is he has hit better at each promotion. What's been even more fascinating to watch is how well he consistently hits lefty pitching. Tonight's lead-taking three-run jack over the right field wall was yet another example of his now patented hip flip line drive smash: 2) Watching Esteury Ruiz wind-up on the base paths is a thing of beauty. I don't know if I've ever seen a weapon quite like this in the Brewers system. He's a danger to lay down an impeccable bunt single at any moment and yet he can make some serious contact on the ball. He can play cat and mouse every single time he's on a base. And, he's coy about it. Sometimes he'll take off on the first pitch. Sometimes he'll show disinterest and then deep in the count take off when you least expect it. His timing is typically impeccable and his jumps are typically incredibly well timed. Take a look at both these latter qualities in his fifth record-breaking steal: 3) We are seeing something else from C Pedro Severino in September. After another long ball tonight - a no doubter over the wall in left field - he has pushed his September output to: 9 G, 30 AB, 0.467 BA, 1.376 OPS (!!), 8 R, 8 RBI, 3 HR, 5 2B, 4 BB, 3 K. The man is absolutely mashing right now. The Sounds are extremely lucky to have a MLB caliber catcher manning the backstop in their playoff push. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 8, Pensacola (Marlins) 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shucker' site, game details, please visit and review: Six for Six - Shook Deals Six Frames to Help Shuckers to Sixth Straight - Murray Hits First Double-A Home Run Winners of six straight games, I am all hands on deck to watch the Shuckers close out their 2022 campaign with a bang. Much like Wisconsin, these Shuckers are showcasing there is plenty to play for even when no post-season birth is on the line. RHP TJ Shook gave us his best outing in some time as he looked calm and collected on the mound: 6 IP, 6 H, 1 BB, 2 ER, 1 HR, 3 K. In what is likely his last start of 2022, it has to feel good to end on a positive note after some scuffling down the homestretch. Thank you for all your efforts in 2022, young man. Three Quick Strikes: 1) OF Corey Ray continues to demonstrate he will not go quietly into the night as his off season approaches. He extended his hit streak to nine games after his early game single, then hit a two bagger, and followed with a walk. All told, he finished his evening 2-for-4 with 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB. His only blemishes came when he was caught stealing and picked off. Given he still gives high quality defense and outfield range on a nightly basis, the ongoing offensive output is noteworthy. When Ray is healthy, he still offers quite a bit to a baseball team as he's showcased on more than one occasion in 2022. I continue to hope there's a way he stays in the system in 2023 - yes, even if that is unrealistic. 2) C Nick Kahle is making the most of his late season opportunities behind home plate. After only 16 AB's in all of August, he now has 22 AB's through September 14th. Batting in the nine-hole tonight, he gave his team a 2-for-3, 1 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K performance. Let's take a look at his home run blast over the left field fence. This one had some pop and came in a very solid at bat: 3)The late season Double-A play we are seeing from High-A mainstays, Zavier Warren; Ethan Murray; and Wes Clarke, is one of the highlights of my 2022 Minor League season. We've seen a three home run game from Clarke (he had another two bagger tonight), Zavier Warren was on base four times tonight and swiped two bases, and Ethan Murray brought the leather in addition to a 2-for-4 evening with a solo jack. This might not have been expected by most casual fans, but, you've seen glimpses of these types of games throughout much of the second half of the 2022 season. To see these young men put it together in the midst of an unlikely six game winning streak for the Shuckers is all the feels Let's take a quick peak at Murray's long fly over the wall in deep center left field: We've got a LHP Brandon Knarr and RHP Josh Lindbolm treat tomorrow night. Both hurlers have proven incredibly reliable in 2022 - I'm expecting more skill and greatness as they take the hill. Will the Sounds push their division lead? Will the Shuckers win their seventh straight? Tune in. As always, thanks for reading and supporting these players as they chase their dreams. 11. And then there were two - Biloxi and Nashville. What a long strange trip it always is. We begin each season with four full-season affiliates, we add four summer league teams (in the Dominican and in Arizona), and then we lose the same four summer league teams. Finally, we whittle away Low-A and High-A and we enter the home stretch. Soon there will only be our beloved Nashville Sounds left standing. The Minor League baseball season is a wild and wooly beast and we are here for every step of the way. Let's get into the reports. Transactions: Firstly, let's get you up to date with the brief flurry of moves from Monday: A special congratulations is in order, from my POV, to RHP Taylor Floyd who did it the hard way and earned his way back to Double-A. He was phenomenal in Wisconsin. And, of course, congratulations to all other players who receive these late season promotions. All extremely well deserved. I guess we should also definitely point out the historic nature of Jackson Chourio's late-season send off in Double-A: That probably deserves a: "WOW!". At this point, these types of things are ridiculously routine for Chourio which is, well, simply nuts. And, lastly, there were a couple Brewers-related moves today: RHP Trevor Gott and OF Jonny Davis were both sent on rehab assignments to the Nashville Sounds Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Jacksonville (Marlins) 4, Nashville 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, please visit and review: Sounds Drop Series Opener to Jumbo Shrimp - Lead atop International League West Division Remains 2.5 Games Happy birthday to Marcus Walden who turned 34 years young on this fine September day. Coming in to this game tonight, my first thought was: "A plus 5 ERA does not do justice for the fine work Walden has given the Sounds outside of, say, two rough outings.". By and large, he's been a multi-tool for the pitching staff. He'll start. He'll come out of the bullpen. He's dependable. Like Josh Lindbolm, he's another quality veteran and I've enjoyed the work he's given his team and the fans so far in 2022. He finished tonight with just 76 pitches, 52 strikes, in 6 complete IP. All told he gave up 1 R (unearned), 4 H, 1 BB, 5 K. He lowered his ERA to 4.53 and I exhaled freely: justice was served in the baseball universe. Three Quick Strikes: 1) The air seemed a bit stiff in Nashville tonight - several fly balls seemed to fall flat at the warning track as the ballpark flags drooped listless high atop their poles. It could be I see things less accurately as I age, but, this certainly seemed to be the case. This being said, a Sounds outfield combination of Esteury Ruiz, Jonathan Davis , and Joey Wiemer (left to right) has some serious serious speed and can cover some serious serious ground. During RHP Trevor Gott's first rehab inning, Ruiz ran down a well-hit liner down the left field line with a man on first. It was a key out. He made the fly out look awfully routine. I'm here to tell you: it most definitely was not. He ran down a hard hit liner in shallow left field an inning or two prior. You have to absolutely earn everything you hit into that Nashville outfield grass. 2) Sal Frelick is an on base machine in Triple-A Nashville. He started his evening 3-for-3 adding his fifth three hit game since his promotion (he also has a four hit game in his bag). He is truly an exciting pure lead-off prospect for the Brewers - every at-bat is a battle, nothing is freely given, and he more often than not can work the count to his benefit even when he's behind 0-2. It's simply a matter of time - there is entirely too much talent in this young man's toolkit - before he's an everyday player in Milwaukee. 3) Five errors committed by the division leading, fielding percentage leading, Nashville Sounds? Unfortunately, that isn't a typo. I saw several of these miscues - none worse than the E2, E6 in succession by Pedro Feliciano and Brice Turang allowing the absolutely not speedy Willians Astudillo to score from first base in the Jacksonville eighth frame. Feliciano also managed his 11th passed ball on his season in an ugly catch attempt of a Gott outside 96-mph heater. Feliciano got his full glove on the ball and, well, he simply didn't catch it. A smart betting man would opine: we probably won't see a poorer fielding night the rest of Nashville's 2022 season; previous to this laugher, the Sounds had topped out at two errors in a game on 14 separate occasions. This was as ugly as it will get. We're onward and upward from here, folks! Taking game one in convincing, quality start, shutdown bullpen fashion in Pensacola gives me the fuel I need to watch these young men close their 2022 season in a good way. It's certainly been no secret that I've endured these Shuckers up-and-downs from afar as I have watched the Brewers Double-A affiliate throughout all of 2022. But, let me tell you, the way they bounced back versus Mississippi in their closing home series after seeing a 26-4 deficit through two games has me believing again. RHP Carlos Luna gave us a fantastic quality start to get the series started right. His teammates followed suit. Three Quick Strikes: 1) OF Jackson Chourio definitely impacted his first Double-A game in classic Chourio fashion: 1-for-4, 1 2B, 1 SF, 3 RBI, 3 K. The strikeouts were back in a hurry with this level jump but so were the timely hits and skillful plays. Take a look on this deep drive to almost leave the ballpark high up the right center field wall nearly clearing the bases (apologies, Jason Lopez): He followed with a very casual deep liner sacrifice fly to extend the Shuckers lead to 7-2 in the sixth inning. The strikeout rate had improved significantly with his jump to High-A dropping to a very respectable 21%. We'll simply have to watch and see if he can adapt in this extremely brief test of Double-A waters. All in all, a very solid debut. 2) I've said it a couple times recently, but it's worth bringing it up again: the example OF Garrett Whitley is giving in Biloxi is noteworthy. I love his availability, his approach, his body language, his professionalism and his results. After tonight's 2-for-4 outing (1 2B, 1 HR, 1 BB), he pushed his BA to 0.260 and his OPS to 0.865. He has speed that plays all over the outfield and on the base paths. I do not take his efforts for granted and I sincerely hope the Brewers can keep his veteran presence in the fold in 2023. If they could manage to keep both he and Monasterio in the fold, that would be a massive get for organizational depth at the upper levels. Both young men are just entering their primes and both young men are fantastic baseball players. Let's get this done, Brewers! 3) Welcome back to Double-A, Taylor Floyd. What a turnaround for this young man as he has battled through the early season woes in that early-season arduous return from injury. He has turned many new pages over the past month plus in Appleton and this continues for Biloxi as he looks to close his 2022 campaign. Floyd went 1 scoreless IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K. How rough was his early season tenure with the Shuckers? He lowered his ERA to 8.18 in Double-A after tonight's scoreless frame. RHP TJ Shook looks to bounce back strong after his most recent outing and LHP Ethan Small continues looking for a quality start. With Nashville barely clinging to a 2 1/2 game lead, and with their worst defensive performance of 2022 in their rearview mirror, now is the time for Small to find that early season shutdown stuff. Your team needs you, Mr. Small. It is time. 12. 13. Robert Moore gave us a closing series to get us excited for his 2023. He really came on late. Lots to love in his game. Some of those home runs really popped off the bat. It certainly would appear good things are in store.

  15. From the MiLB Wes Clarke article: I absolutely love this. And, it's a testament to how the Shuckers have come off a 26-4 two game deficit to start the Braves series. This is all we can ask for as fans and, I want to again laud Garrett Whitley for what he's brought down to Biloxi since he was assigned to fill the void. Clarke has had a truly wonderful year and it's yet another player in the system who can man 1B and take a free pass with the best of them. I think we'd be hard-pressed to find any combination of 1B/DH candidates with more collective walks than Big Jon Singleton, Thomas Dillard, and Wes Clarke. All three are just truly enjoyable to watch play baseball.

  17. Thanks for sharing. It was a different time, for sure. Sometimes nostalgia paints a cloudy picture of 'better times', but, it's hard not to think we all benefited greatly when things were slower and a wee more analog. I used to love how they had medium and fast pitch for the baseball. The fast pitch, to my young eyes, felt sooooooo fast!

  19. I will never forget the many days and hours spent at 'Grand Slam' over there by the ol' Roundy's food warehouse. I took the long drive through Brookfield. Up North Avenue, past Brookfield East...those were fine memories. When I wasn't trying to hit balls in those batting cages, I was in that wild and crazy trampoline apparatus with the mini basketballs. So much fun as a youngster in those.

  21. They used them throughout, really. I'd say there were a good 6 or so used per team. It's so fast - from challenge to decision - you almost don't even notice if it weren't for the visual they show us on the screen. It's really: challenge in, screen shot of automated zone, call made, next pitch. Almost as fast as you can read this.
