  1. Lastly, we've discussed the incredible season INF Cam Devanney has had at the dish (and, it's been something). Some here who haven't had the opportunity to see the games have asked about his defense. It's quite good. Truly. Since game 1 he's shown a steady glove and a cannon for an arm. Check out this spinning stop just past the third base bag and his momentum bringing him into foul territory. He makes these plays look routine with that rifle on his shoulder: (Also on the Biloxi twitter page is a OF Corey Ray solo home run shot and an OF Garrett Whiltely 2-rbi triple. Both young men have taken their assignment with absolute class. Let's hope they can get red hot and continue to further their careers.)
  2. Here are some RHP Edwin Jimenez highlights from his career-high 10K outing. I've said it a couple times this season, but he really does have some ol' RHP Mike Fiers stuff to his aresenal. A lot of off-speed deception and sink:
  3. A special tip of the glass is in order for @damuellewho continues to give us great recaps even amidst a prolonged family vacation (stateside at present). It's commitment like this that will get him to the 'Big Club' some day. Hopefully, he'll remember us when he's a big timer. ?
  4. My head is on a swivel tracking all the movement in the Brewers organization post-trade deadline. My hat indeed goes off to all the managers in and throughout the system as they amend their line-up cards. Considering the changes happening (and recently accelerating) on a weekly basis - it's truly a sight to behold. OF Esteury Ruiz began his much-anticipated career within the Brewers organization batting second behind red hot and rising superstar prospect, OF Sal Frelick. Biloxi played a seven-inning double-header picking up yesterday's suspended game, Wisconsin looked to make it two straight in Quad Cities, and Carolina looked to even their season series versus Kannapolis. Let's get into the reports! Transactions: (Take your time. This is two voluminous days of activity) OF Corey Ray was assigned to the Biloxi Shuckers from the Nashville Sounds RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez was assigned to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers from the Carolina Mudcats LHP Leoni De La Cruz was assigned to the Carolina Mudcats from the ACL Brewers Blue RHP Alexander Vallecillo was assigned to the Carolina Mudcats from the ACL Brewers Blue C Pedro Severino was designated for assignment to the Nashville Sounds from the Milwaukee Brewers RHP Dinelson Lamet was designated for assignment to the Nashville Sounds from the Milwaukee Brewers RHP Peter Strzelecki was optioned back to the Nashville Sounds from the Milwaukee Brewers INF/OF Keston Hiura was recalled to the Milwaukee Brewers from the Nashville Sounds I think I have all of today's transactional bases covered. I apologize if I missed a move or two - it's been a head-spinning couple of days. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes: None posted as of Game Time Final: Nashville 8, Norfolk (Orioles) 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, please visit and review: Sounds Stay Hot Against Tides - Nashville Makes it Back-to-Back Three Homer Nights in Norfolk Nashville (and the Brewers organization and fans) got their first look at newly acquired outfielder Esteury Ruiz. RHP Jason Alexander took the hill for just his second start since being sent back down by the Brewers. Alexander is just so calm and collected - even when the home plate umpire was extremely inconsistent and missing clear strike calls, Alexander just stayed calm and poised and delivered until the sixth inning. There was just so much FUN in this game, folks. I'm going to get right into my 'Three Strikes', but, suffice it to say: we have a limited time to watch this Sounds collection of talent. Do so while you can: It is undeniably electric. Three Quick Strikes: 1. My first 'Live' impressions of Ruiz are thus: extremely disciplined at the plate - not a single swing on a pitch outside the zone. He clearly is capable of waiting for his pitch. He will unleash a home run swing only when the situation demands. He exudes confidence. He is a very dangerous threat on the base paths. Don't be fooled by two 'CS' marks - he was definitely caught by an eyelash during his first steal attempt (an incredible throw by the Tides catcher) but the umpires absolutely blew a successful steal in his second attempt. He slid under and ahead of the tag attempt. The umps, plain and simple, blew it. A minor theme during a dominant Sounds performance. There is a ton to like with Ruiz. Let's also remember: this is a 23-year-old fast rising uber-talented prospect. A fantastic first outing. 2. What about our other recently promoted super prospects? My goodness, folks, they were also what we might call 'electric'. The thing about each and every one of Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell, and Joey Wiemer is: they are dangerous in every facet of baseball. Whether they are manning the outfield grass, in the batters box, or on the base paths every one of these young men can hurt the opponent. Frelick led things off in incredible fashion last night. Tonight, Mitchell and Wiemer joined in the fun. Perhaps the most impressive play was Garrett Mitchell's calm and collected easy and smooth three-run home run stroke over the wall in right center - rumored to be 395 feet though not official. Maybe it was Wiemer's two easy stolen bases? All in all, we saw a collective 6-for-15 amongst the three with 3 R, 5 RBI and the 2 SB. And, here's the lone highlight: 3. Lost in seemingly every prospect shuffle, for whatever inexplicable reason, is the ongoing tremendous age 22 season we are seeing from tantalizing and uber-talented Brice Turang . Turang is the epitome of a smooth and easy athlete. He makes everything he does look fascinatingly easy - just take his utterly ridiculous running scoop and toss for a key double play in the middle innings. Other than his XBH desert in June, he has been absolutely incredible in 2022. He hit his 7th home run tonight, adding to the riches of glorious fun I witnessed this fine August evening. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Game 1: Biloxi 3, Mississippi (Braves) 2 Game 1: Box Score / Game Log Game 2: Biloxi 2, Mississippi 0 Game 2: Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please visit and review: Biloxi Takes Both Legs of Wednesday Night Doubleheader - Lutz and Dillard Both Homer The Shuckers were the beneficiaries of two fantastic outings from LHP Nick Bennett in game 1 and then RHP TJ Shook in game 2. To boot, the bullpen was definitively up to the task as RHP Cam Robinson grabbed his second Double-A save with a scoreless two strikeout outing in game 1 and tight-rope walker, RHP Zach Vennarro, grabbed the nerve-racking save to close out game 2 completing two seven-inning affairs. The Braves are a vastly different ball club, I might add, minus the heavy impacts of one CF Michael Harris III who is now an everyday starter in Atlanta. The entire Southern League are the beneficiaries of his absence. Regardless, what else happened down in Mississippi? Let me give you a few ideas. Three Quick Strikes: 1. We may have seen Wiemer, Frelick and Mitchell head north to Nashville but the same Shuckers who were hitting while those studs were in Biloxi continue to hit when they're gone. I'm looking at the ongoing production of INF Andruw Monasterio, OF Tristen Lutz, 1B Thomas Dillard, and INF Cam Devanney. All these young men had something meaningful to say tonight. And their output ultimately put across the deciding runs. Here's a few tastes: (Oh geez! Whose that trotting ahead of home run King, Tristen Lutz? None other than Devanney...) And I share the final highlight encouraging you to turn the volume up. I heard this blast from the other room and, I swear, the sound you hear is 'It's Gone!'. This is crushed: 2. Let's talk about Shook getting comfortable. Let's talk about 9 K's in 4 IP. That's the stuff of shut-down dominance. Other than a weird pitch-clock full count walk leading to a brief bases loaded scare, Shook was pretty dang electric. From my vantage point, it seems like he's setting his baseline right now and finding his pace and comfortability. And, I personally believe there's more in the toolkit we haven't quite seen. Tonight, he really focused on a three-pitch mix of a high heater, a sneaky back door slider, and an effective change-up. I think we're just scratching the surface. He's got the frame and the muscle and the arm action to get even better and more dominant. I, for one, am extremely excited to see where this all leads. The final line reads: 4 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 0 R, 9 K. Whewwww. That's the proverbial stuff. 3. I mentioned Robinson above (and, for good measure, J.C. Mejia also had a scoreless 2 K frame in his first rehab start), but let's go back and talk about the continued run of consistency and impact we are seeing from LHP Nick Bennett . He's getting comfortable. The tweaks are working. And the results speak for themselves. Including tonight, in his last five outings we are looking at: 5 GS, 29 IP, 7 ER, 34 K. 7 BB, 3 HR - WHIP and BAA are unadjusted after tonight (with slight elevation considering). In July, WHIP: 1.04 / BAA: 0.205. I don't know about you, but I'm really looking forward to three or four more starts in August with his name all over the line-up card. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 8, Quad Cities (Royals) 6 Box Score/Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers' site, game details, please visit and review: Eight is Enough for Wisconsin - Warren Drives in Five Runs as Rattlers Hold on for 8-6 Win at Quad Cities I've been watching all the changes happening in and amongst the Timber Rattlers roster for some time. I've discussed the obvious: players who had the talent and weren't seeing the production perhaps needed some minor adjustment or, frankly, some luck and hopefully we would see the results. One of the highest on the ladder for such a suggestion was INF Zavier Warren . And, wow, let me tell you Warren has stepped up and then some. Since the trade deadline passed two games ago, Zavier has hit two triples, a double, and two home runs. That's, ummmm, something. I'm sure we'll see the OPS elevation totals in the next 24 hours and it will be wondrous. Either way, he has stepped into the talent gap and reminded us: Zavi's got talent. For a player with such steady stuff; such availability; and a young man wise beyond his baseball years it's been awesome to see the results come to fruition these past couple games. Three Quick Strikes: 1. If Warren is knocking in multi-run homers, who the heck is on base? You might surmise, Jackson Chourio . And, well, you'd be spot on. Chourio continued his High-A tear by going 4-for-6 with three runs crossed. It's hard to fathom going up a level and rising to the occasion like Chourio has done, but, we're seeing it in real time. Tonight was filled with many a seeing-eye single. I guess when you've got it going, you've really got it going: 2. INF Antonio Piñero showed out, as did C Alex Hall , and they deserve mention but I'm going to focus in on the continual consistent production of INF Jose Acosta . Since his acquisition earlier this season, he's done nothing but play consistent ball. He appears to have taken the fifth spot in the batting order protecting improving Warren. Tonight, Acosta went 2-for-4 with a run, a rbi, a stolen base, and a caught stealing. It's a luxury having a solidifying force in the infield given the loss of Tyler Black and the struggles elsewhere in the infield. 3. With the loss of RHP Kent Hasler months ago to the higher levels and with the recent promotion of RHP Cam Robinson to Double-A Biloxi, the closer role has been taken and really filled expertly by RHP James Meeker. Meeker was one of the more intriguing Brewers indy pick-ups in the 2021 off-season. After some hiccups early in 2022, he has absolutely settled in and played with confidence and poise. Tonight was no different as Meeker pitched a scoreless one-walk ninth inning and picked up his seventh save in nine opportunities. Carolina Pre-Game Notes Final: Carolina 5, Kannapolis (White Sox) 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats' site, game details, please visit and review: Castillo Hits Late Go-Ahead Homer in 5-3 Victory RHP Stiven Cruz rebounded with aplomb. Cruz gave his teammates all the opportunity they needed to even the Mudcats season series with the Cannonballers at 7-7. When all was said and done, Cruz pitched to the tune of: 5 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 1 HR, and 9 K. These are outings the young hurler can build on and these are the outings that continue to give the Brewers personnel staff sneak peaks at what might be in his bright future. Three Quick Strikes: 1. Not to be lost in Cruz's fine outing is the fine bullpen work we witnessed across the board from the Mudcats. Recent ACL call-up RHP Jeison Pena continued to show he belongs with 2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, and 3 K. He was backed up by RHP Karlos Morales who continues to claim a meaningful role as a late-inning out getter with 1 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K ball. And, it would appear we have a second closer in RHP Brannon Jordan who picks up his third save in five opportunities with a scoreless 1 H and 2 K shutdown ninth inning. Fantastic stuff all around! 2. While INF Jadher Areinamo continues to get rightful notoriety in our community of fans, we may have overlooked OF's Luis Castillo due to his recent minor tailing off after a red-hot start to his ACL season. Tonight, Castillo showed up in a big way with a 3-for-4 line and the go-ahead homer late. It's clutch two out hits like this that remind us why he was rewarded with 'Player of the Month' accolades playing in Arizona: 3. Not to be outdone in the 'Don't forget me!' department, INF Eduardo Garcia had a pleasant return to effectiveness at the dish tonight. He finished 2-for-4 on the evening, with a solo shot; two runs; and the home run RBI. But, what I get excited about if I'm honest is the null set in the strikeout department. This is what will play across all levels. It's a work in progress, but we're rooting for the young man to keep on showing out: We will see DSL and ACL clubs taking to the diamond again tomorrow. Who knows, maybe we'll get real hot and see an 8-0 evening. Either way, we'll be watching and giving you all the low down from 'down on the farm'. I'll personally be tuning into see if RHP Justin Jarvis can make it three consecutive victories in Quad Cities. I'll probably check in on LHP Brandon Knarr 's outing at Mississippi as well. Facing a tough lefty, DL Hall - notoriously tough on lefty bats and with multiple double digit strikeout games in 2022 - he started his evening off with consecutive hits knocking a lead-off double in the first and an RBI single in the second. All told, the young up-and-coming outfield prospect looked entirely unfazed by the promotion. He looked confident. He looked, quite simply, like he belonged. Three Quick Strikes: On the other end of the promotional spectrum, OF's Garrett Mitchell and Joey Wiemer, batting sixth and seventh respectively, both looked a wee amped. They both finished their evenings with identical batting lines: 0-for-5 with 3 K's apiece. Not the night they were looking for, but there's plenty of season left to right the ship and reclaim former glory. Keston Hiura is a really good Triple-A player. He seems to impact near every game he suits up for Nashville. We've gone back-and-forth on the Brewer Fanatic website as to the merits of his 'demotion', but all I can say as a minor league connoisseur, he quite simply shows up and shows out. After tonight's 1-for-3, 2 RBI, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 HR, 0 K performance, he's hit to the tune of 6 HR and 18 RBI in just 13 games with the Sounds. That's a small sample size, for sure, but, it's also ridiculously efficient production. Hat's off to Hiura for his ability to take his season in stride and continue to show up and produce. My favorite line of this evening (other than RHP Caleb Boushley's 11th win) goes to C Mario Feliciano . If he can put together more night's like this, we're cooking with gas: 1-for-2, 3 R, 3 BB, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 HR, 1 SB. Let's hope for more of this in the games ahead. Well, opening a road series in Quad Cities may be just what all the T-Rats needed. (The Rattlers now own the season series edge 16-3.) Regardless, the young hurler threw 6 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 4 K, 0 R ball. This was quite possibly his best performance of his season. We hope to see more outings like this one as he looks to regain the form meriting promoted status in early 2022. Three Quick Strikes: With the injury to INF/OF Tyler Black and the promotion the OF Tristan Peters, many a T-Rats faithful most likely assumed their best and only hope resided in OF Jackson Chourio. And, for good measure given Chourio's 2022 season and his future prospectus. However, it's worth noting, many a talented Rattler have simply not been having the seasons their talents are worthy of. Enter 3B Zavier Warren . Zavier entered this season inside most arbitrary prospect rankings' Top 20's. And, though his approach has been consistent and he's been available, the results have simply lagged. Tonight, however, was a mini-breakout: 3-for-5, 2 3B, 1 R, 3 RBI, 1 K. Let's recognize the fine bullpen work of RHP Hobie Baker and newly promoted (and still un-scored upon since his ACL promotions) RHP Ryan Middendorf . Combined, the duo pitched to a tune of 3 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 ER, 5 K. We can work with that. Oh, yes, we can work with that. Let's also mention the fine output from one INF Ethan Murray . All told, Murray hit 2-for-3, 1 BB, 3 RBI, 2 R, 2 2B, and 1 K batting in the fifth spot protecting clean-up hitter, Ashton McGee . This is as good a night as we can ask for from Murray and if the Timber Rattlers are going to make a late season charge, they'll need more nights like this. Keep it going, young man! He kept his team within striking distance all six innings pitched: Unfortunately, the bats couldn't get going in a meaningful way. The Mudcats had a mere four opportunities with RISP - 1-for-4 on the evening - and, they were outhit 10-to-5. As the Mudcats' headline reads: Figueroa took the tough luck loss. Unfortunately, he moved to 0-7 on the season. Three Quick Strikes: Just promoted from the ACL yesterday, INF Jadher Areinamo hit the ground running in the lead-off spot for the Mudcats. He finished his evening 2-for-3 with 1 R, 1 BB, and 1 K. That's a fine debut in Low-A. In 2022, Areinamo has repeatedly shown a knack for plate discipline - a very good BB:K ratio and, in general, fine results when he makes contact. This could sneakily be one of the better Brewers prospects who somehow continues to fly under the radar. His early 2022 High-A exposure seems to have given him the perfect taste of affiliated ball. We'll have to continue to keep our eyes on this young infielder. This is the sixth straight loss to Kannapolis for the young Mudcats. Previous to this home loss the series was tied at 6-6 with each team possessing a 5-1 record at home. However, this is a vastly different Mudcats team from the pre-trade deadline series squads. Let us simply hope they can reclaim some home field advantage and give us similar results. This was RHP Miguel Guerrero 's first real rough patch since he was re-assigned from the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. This was one of those evening's where he simply didn't have it: 2 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 1 ER, 2 K. It's a testament to his resolve, however, that he managed to limit the damage. His eighth inning could very easily have gotten away but he limited the damage to one run. ACL Brewers Gold 7, ACL Guardians 6 Box Score/Game Log 2022 first round pick Eric Brown Jr. got his first ACL and organizational action tonight batting lead-off and playing shortstop. He finished his evening 0-for-3 with 1 K and he turned a double play. INF Gregory Barrios, playing second base tonight, finished 3-for-4 with 2 R, 2 RBI, and hit his 2nd triple of his season. The victory will be credited to 19-year-old RHP Yorman Galindez whose line reads 5 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 7 K, 1 HR, 2 ER, After 21-year-old RHP Raul Mendoza walked a batter and hit a batter, he surrendered a 3-run home run allowing the Guardians a chance at victory in the ninth inning. However, RHP Trevor Tietz would have none of it - he struck the final batter out on three pitches. The Brewers Gold move to 21-18 on the season. ACL Brewers Blue 4, ACL Athletics 3 Box Score/Game Log ACL Brewers darling, OF Jace Avina, hit his 10th home run tonight. He finished his evening 2-for-4 with the 1 HR, 1 R, 1 RBI, and 1 K. 2022 Brewers draft picks INF Robert Moore, C/INF/OF Tayden Hall, C Matthew Wood, and INF Ben Metzinger all suited up for the Blue. Metzinger hit a triple for his only knock while Hall went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Moore and Wood both went hitless. 19-year-old Alexander Perez's 2-for-4 line deserves mention as he knocked in a run and a rbi. 19-year-old RHP Arielbi Gonzalez took the game through six complete innings: 2 H, 0BB, 0 ER, 6 K. That's a heck of a pitching performance. And, it wouldn't be a complete mini-recap if I didn't give mention to the continued fine work of two-way baseball savant, Quinton Low. He continued his scoreless streak by pitching a clean 9th inning: 0 H, 0 BB, 0 ER, 2 K. 7. It was Trade Deadline Day across MLB, but minor league ball clubs most definitely still played. We witnessed LHP Antoine Kelly and OF Tristan Peters head to other organizations and, for that, we send our well wishes and congratulations to both young men. Both players entertained us considerably this season and we send our gratitude. I, for one, am immensely grateful for the time I witnessed their growth. With vastly different lineups across all clubs, it was a 'getting to know you' evening for me. Biloxi's outfield was suddenly at Triple-A. Wisconsin's line-up was suddenly even thinner. Carolina took their youth movement and simply added to it. And 2022 draft picks were scattered amongst the Brewers ACL ball clubs. Let's see how the teams fared! Transactions: OF's Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell, and Joey Wiemer were all promoted to the Nashville Sounds from the Biloxi Shuckers In a corresponding move, OF Garrett Whitley was assigned to the Biloxi Shuckers from the Nashville Sounds RHP Ryan Middendorf was assigned to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers from the Carolina Mudcats C Reidy Mercado was assigned to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers from the ACL Brewers Blue OF Noah Campbell was placed on BIloxi's 7-Day IL (ruh roh) RHP JC Mejia was sent on a rehab assignment to the Biloxi Shuckers And, here's a bevy of draft pick and UDFA assignments down in the ACL - thank you @damuelle for posting these in our ongoing Minor League Transaction Thread: SS Eric Brown Jr. (1st round pick) assigned to ACL Brewers Gold SS Robert Moore (2nd round compensatory pick) assigned to ACL Brewers Blue C Matthew Wood (4th round pick) assigned to ACL Brewers Blue 3B Ben Metzinger (7th round pick) assigned to ACL Brewers Blue C Tayden Hall (7th round pick) assigned to ACL Brewers Blue C Satchell Norman (15th round pick) assigned to ACL Brewers Gold 1B Reece Walling (UDFA signing) assigned to ACL Brewers Gold Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 8, Norfolk (Orioles) 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, please visit and review: Sounds Slug Past Tides in Series Opener - Nashville Launches Three Home Runs, Improves to 60-39 Sal Frelick arrived in Nashville, took the lead-off spot in the line-up and continued doing the exact same things he'd been doing in Biloxi: hitting the baseball. 8. An important part of the Josh Hader trade - and long may Josh Hader live joyously in the hearts of Brewers fans - were two highly-touted but possibly (probably likely) off-your-radar Padres prospects in OF Esteury Ruiz and LHP Robert Gasser. Ruiz will begin his Brewers career in Nashville (AAA) while Gasser will take the mound for Biloxi (AA). So, who are these prospects anyhow and what might we expect? And do you have any cool clips of them playing? Yes. Yes, I do. I am here to give you a brief overview and some general thoughts. So, let's get to it! Firstly, I think it's fair to say: this isn't how any of us imagined the Brewers trade deadline kicking off. Like many Brewers fans, I was quite shocked when I saw the news alerts begin rapid firing in succession on my iPhone screen. Josh Hader has become synonymous with pretty much all facets of Milwaukee Brewers success. And, poof, just like that, our stud closer was gone. If there's anything we've come to learn since David Stearns took the helm atop the Brewers decision-making ladder it most certainly is: expect the unexpected. Just when you think they're targeting a Josh Bell or a Ramon Laureano, they go right ahead and send out their HOF closer in the midst of a division lead and a mad dash for the playoffs. And, so here we are. If we step back and consider what Stearns shared publicly post-trade this all starts to make a bit more sense. Take a look here: A significant piece of the Hader trade haul puzzle is the difficult decision of letting a HOF closer go for a very good MLB replacement - i.e. staying relevant now - while also keeping a keen eye toward future competitiveness - i.e. having multiple more chances to be relevant in the future. This is an extremely difficult thing to do. I'm unqualified to make salary prognostications but suffice to say: the Brewers saved salary NOW and have more flexibility during the next 24 hours. I commend the personnel department for their willingness to see the forest for the trees - even if it means sending out an all-time great. They've also added a tantalizing outfield talent to an already robust outfield pool and they've acquired a very toolsy lefty to add to a pitching pool that, frankly, needs depth. I will simply say: from my vantage point, today the Milwaukee Brewers Minor League system improved considerably. The Brewers acquired two very interesting and exciting players. And, in Gasser, they may have simply acquired the best pitcher in their entire system. OF Esteury Ruiz You'll be hard-pressed to find a more dominant and improved season at any level in Minor League baseball than the 2021 to 2022 quantitative and qualitative output of OF Esteury Ruiz . It's quite obvious, the Brewers see staying power with Ruiz's improved plate output and they already love his speed. And, frankly, they aren't the only ones. Consider these examples: Dive into that 'Prospect Larceny' list and you'll see two things: the Brewers have seven top-100 prospects offensively (list on the left) and, in this particular metric, Esteury Ruiz is the Brewers highest rated offensive player. Yes, ahead of super-phenom OF Jackson Chourio. You can pick and choose amongst stat metrics, obviously, and I'm not going to do that here (even if I did!), but the main point is: in 2022, at least, Esteury Ruiz is really really good. Top 10 talent good. However, to simply claim he just suddenly broke out also isn't true. This is a player who has taken a gradual path of meaningful Minor League improvement. As noted by Prospects 1500's Alex Sanchez in early June: Some have pointed to his 60 stolen bases in MILB this season and offered sentiments like: "Well, he just knows how to steal bases." Ummmm, yes. And, to be frank: he's just extremely fast. See the following: You've seen the above run-down diving catch in center field. Well, how about a chase-down extremely difficult catch in right field? How about a running and diving catch in right field at the Major League level? A successful steal off an obvious fastball? It would appear he's safe by a couple seconds: Hey, guess what? Esteury Ruiz is extremely fast on a baseball field. Ruiz batted primarily lead-off and in the two-hole for San Diego. Obviously, they wanted to get that speed on the base paths. Have I mentioned he's fast? Ok, good. Phew. So, what it would appear it comes down to with Perez is quite simple: can he maintain the batting improvements we see in his 2022 Minor League season and maintain some semblance of this at the Major League level? It's much too early to tell but, but it's easy to see why the Brewers wanted him in this deal. As for the 2022 Double and Triple-A numbers: I'm excited to see how he fares in Nashville! This is a player David Stearns believes might appear with the Brewers this season. And, certainly, this is another player in the outfield mix for the seasons ahead. Does this mean other moves are on the trade deadline horizon? Possibly. It might also simply mean a bigger apple. LHP Robert Gasser I definitely am intrigued and love what I see from Esteury Ruiz - I feel he offers an extremely enticing toolkit to an MLB club. However, if I'm being honest, I'm more excited about what Robert Gasser brings to the Brewers' organizational pitching depth. Gasser seems like a young pitcher tailor-made for the Brewers esteemed 'pitching lab'. Just look at this interview from the beloved Fangraphs website. Notable quotes of intrigue: This is a young hurler that embodies what every modern pitching program is striving to achieve: a player invested in analytic-driven tweaks, implementation, and evolution-driven results. And, there are distinct reasons Gasser won the Midwest League's pitcher of the week in late June: he's gotten better this season and he's seeing the fruits of his labor. Honestly, it's a shame the Brewers couldn't have placed him in High-A Wisconsin to kick off his Brewers career; the Timber Rattlers would have briefly had the 1,2,3 spots in the Midwest League strikeout leader board with Jarvis, Gasser, and Kelly. Keep in mind, Gasser has more K's than coveted LHP Antoine Kelly (now with the Rangers, it would appear?), but, half the walks. Gasser will join Brandon Knarr and T.JShook in Biloxi and help stabilize an improving starting rotation down south. And, who knows, maybe Jarvis heads south as well. I first became aware of this 2022 improved version of Gasser when I watched him absolutely dominate the Timber Rattlers bats on May 8th (6 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 BB, 6 K). I continued to watch him peripherally as I monitored the Midwest pitching leader board - and, yes, he had some hiccups as High-A pitchers do. But, he had absolutely found aspects of his stuff in the past two months that would leave any organization wanting more: Here's Fort Wayne's Journal Gazette writer, Dylan Sinn, sharing locally. As noted in this article, and discussed in the trade aftermath: there is more significant speed discrepancies available between his fastball repertoire and his off-speed stuff. When that speed gap widens, we'll most likely see even more swings and misses. Given his commitment to horizontal and vertical movement, I firmly believe this is in the cards. And, make no mistake, Gasser had clearly become the Tin Caps' ace: A Double-A promotion is the obvious next step. Let's see what he can accomplish in Biloxi! So where will Gasser and Ruiz land in our 'Top Prospects' lists? It's very easy to see, in my humble opinion, both prospects will immediately fall in the Brewer Fanatic Top 10 (Brewer Fanatic Prospect Tracker Here). I advise: don't get caught up in early-season rankings placing Ruiz #28 on the MLB Pipeline Padres list - this is an ascending player who's already made it to the Major Leagues this year which is something we can't say for Chourio, Frelick, Wiemer, or Mitchell. This being said, both players are changing organizations and with that comes an unknown period of adjustment(s). So, without further ado, I will offer you my Brewers post-trade Top 10 as I see it: (1) Jackson Chourio (2) Sal Frelick (3) Brice Turang (4) Robert Gasser (5) Esteury Ruiz (6) Garrett Mitchell (7) Eric Brown Jr. (8) Joey Wiemer (9) Tyler Black (10) Hendry Mendez Apologies to my 'Spirit Animal', but, Joey Wiemer's offensive slump is real - I'm simply waiting for an exodus into expected XBH pastures. No apologies for the talent I am sharing here. Absolutely none at all. View full article

  10. Suddenly feeling really excited about the Nashville Sounds outfield. Where do we go from here? Enjoying the moment!

  11. Taking a real quick peak for our Brewers Minor League affiliate fans: It would appear last year's Hunter Renfroe trade darlings, INF's Alex Binelas and David Hamilton, are both playing for Boston's Double-A affiliate the Portland (Maine) Seadogs: Binelas has struggled, it would appear, in 95 AB's since his promotion: 0.147 BA, 0.274 OBP, 0.368 SLG, 0.642 OPS, 38 K (33.6% adjusted k rate), 16 BB, 6 HR, 17 RBI, 1 2B, 1 3B. The Sox have him primarily at 3B with some games at 1B as well. Hamilton has spent his entire season at Double-A. After a red hot April he has cooled considerably but his speed wil always play (47 steals in 51 attempts ?). 317 AB's to date, 0.230 BA, 0.326 OBP, 0.379 SLG, 0.695 OPS, 85 K (27% k rate), 35 BB, 8 HR, 9 2B, 7 3B (impressive), 30 RBI, 49 R. The Sox have essentially evenly split Hamilton's time between SS and 2B - an interesting development with a classic dash of CF (2 games). Anyhow, a little update for anyone interested. Best of luck to both these young men!
  12. (7 minute, 55 second mark is the initial Jackson Chourio recorded Wisconsin media session - Arbert Cipion with some fantastic translating.)
  13. OK. Hook line and sink, I'm baited. I'm going to assume, given the recent comments, y'all don't watch 22 yo Brice Turang play on the regular? He's a fantastic baseball player. He's already the best player on the Sounds. He's gotten much better this season. He's literally just tapping into his power stroke. You don't trade this young man for a Josh Bell rental. No way. No how. I'm sorry, you just absolutely do not. Turang could very very easily be the Brewers starting shortstop or 2B today. He's that good. Smooth doesn't begin to cover how incredibly, well, smooth ? he is. He's a manager's dream. If you're dealing Turang, you're going for much bigger fish.

  15. The Timber Rattlers continued their second-half losing ways with another rough loss; many a hard hit ball went directly into too many Kernels' waiting gloves. If there's anyone who can turn this around from a leadership perspective, it's manager Joe Ayrault, who is always a positive force with an incredibly dense curriculum vitae of experience in High-A baseball. Elsewhere, RHP Caleb Boushley returned to the mound for Nashville after a 10-day reprieve, RHP TJ Shook looked to find more consistency in his Double-A environment (and, he certainly did); and RHP Fernando Olguin made his first start for the Mudcats since back on July 2nd. Let's dive into the reports! Transactions: RHP Peter Strzelecki was recalled by the Brewers from the Nashville Sounds bullpen LHP Ethan Small was optioned back to the Nashville Sounds starting staff from the Brewers Additionally, a slew of draft and post-draft signings. A retirement. And a release: *** Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes (Note: This 'Game Notes' hyperlink was not working the evening of this game) Final: Nashville 12, Charlotte (White Sox) 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, please visit and review: Sounds Own the Knight(s) Again - Jon Singleton Homers, Knocks in Five Runs in Win Jakson Reetz returned to work behind home plate and helped Caleb Boushley absolutely grind his way through five innings and 100 plus pitches (I can't tell you the last time a Nashville starter threw 100 or more - it's been awhile). Reetz also hit an RBI triple in his first at bat of the evening. In a distant train yard, the Reetz Hype Train whistle sent a faint whisper into the bleachers - rusty and weary from weeks of intermittent Triple-A playing time. Two innings later, you could really hear that Hype Train whistle scream: Reetz sent a solo shot (his second in Triple-A) over the wall in left field. The Sounds knocked across five runs in their first inning at the plate - key hits arrived via a Jon Singleton double, a Pablo Reyes double, and Reetz's aforementioned triple. This was an offensive affair through and through. Thankfully, the Sounds bullpen once again eliminated any notions of a comeback. Three Quick Strikes: Lost in the ongoing discussions of what the Brewers may or may not do with a certain Washington Nationals first baseman is the fabulous July Singleton is having for Nashville. He doesn't have the batting average that will pop off the page, and in fact just surfaced back above 0.200 this week on the season ?. However, the walks are always there (13 BB:18 K in 68 July AB's - 71 BB on the year). The power comes in spades (18th home run and eighth of July tonight - a three run shot to dead right center field off a lefty) and the defense is fantastic. All told, in the hottest month so far in 2022 Jon has met the mercury with some serious offensive heat of his own: 0.265 BA, 20 H, 8 HR, 4 2B, 8 HR, 21 RBI, 17 R, OPS well North of 1.000. That's fantastic stuff. Please take notice. This is my standard Nashville Sounds bullpen post: 4 IP, 0 ER, 6 K, 1 H of combined work from RHP's Marcus Walden, a rehabbing Luis Perdomo, and Lucas Erceg . Walden provided the settle down power after Boushley's grind ended in the fifth, Luis pitched a scoreless eighth, and Lucas rebounded from his roughest outing his last time out and worked his way out of a lead-off single. With Strzelecki back with the Brewers, the strength of the Sounds team still shines. This is my standard Brice Turang post: a lead-off walk to start the game and a 2-for-4 evening overall (3 R, 1 RBI, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K). He is the Yin to Singleton's Yang in July. Any worries we may have had from the precipitous XBH drop-off in June has absolutely vanished. He's been simply put: stellar. At 22 years of age, I think it's absolutely fair to ask: is Brewer Fanatic's #6 prospect the Brewers best current prospect? I don't have that answer but it's certainly worth considering. Like his manager, Rick Sweet, I simply enjoy watching him play baseball. *** Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Montgomery (Rays) 3, Biloxi 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please visit and review: Low Scoring Affair Ends in Favor of Biscuits - Shook Sets New Career High with 6 1/3 Innings Pitched RHP TJ Shook again showed us again why we're excited about his future and, perhaps, he's simply been slowly adjusting to Southern League play. When all was said and done, Shook gave us 6 1/3 career-high innings of 2 H, 2 BB, 4 K, 2 ER ball. Unfortunately, the Shuckers bats were incapable of rewarding his quality start as he left with the score tied at 2-2. The Shuckers bullpen came aboard and held serve until RHP Zach Vennarro gave up a lead-off walk in the ninth frame. That Biscuits' base runner immediately stole second base and the ensuing batter hit a single. It was 3-2 Montgomery just like that. Three Quick Strikes: With one down and trailing 3-2 in the top of the ninth (after a Garrett Mitchell strikeout), Joey Wiemer saw an inside 97 mph pitch tail in and toward the hands portion of his bat. He swung quite hard, lost control of his bat, and was in clear grimacing pain. This hand injury seems to have first appeared in the Fall League of 2021. It may have surfaced in June of this year. I would not be the least surprised if that scary moment tonight ultimately sends BF's #1 prospect headed to the bench tomorrow. It's been a tough go since the IL stint for the young outfielder and it's been tough to see his season get away from him. What I'm seeing, unfortunately, is his right hand seems to be an ongoing issue.? (For a direct look at what I'm talking about: MiLB.TV Game Link - 03:34:54 Mark) Why was Wiemer sent on such a hard hit ball to right field with two down in the bottom of the ninth? Probably because manager Mike Guerrero hadn't seen a single hit since the third inning. Thomas Dillard 's well-hit single was merely the third Shuckers hit of the entire game. Unfortunately, the ball was roped so hard it one-hopped directly to the right fielder who threw with plenty of time to tag out the sheepishly sliding Wiemer. It was one of those rough endings to one of those baseball games. There was some offense, however, and it all happened in the third inning: I highlighted TJ Shook's fine outing above, a hats off is also due the Shuckers bullpen work of RHP Harold Chirino, recently recalled RHP Luis Contreras , and Vennarro. Vennaro gave up a lead-off single and a stolen base to start the ninth and ultimately conceded the winning run on an opposite field single from ongoing Shuckers nemesis, Biscuits outfielder Niko Hulsize r. However, given their were no outs at this juncture and there was an ensuing mini-delay due to a stadium power issue, Vennarro deserves credit for returning to the mound; staying fresh; and striking out three consecutive batters. He gave his team an opportunity to take one in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Shuckers nearly did so. *** Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Cedar Rapids (Twins) 7, Wisconsin 4 Box Score/Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers' site, game details, please visit and review: Kernels Drop Wisconsin 7-4 - Cedar Rapids Breaks 3-3 Tie and Holds Off the Rattlers Home Series T-Rats Delicious Media Nuggets: Post-Game Pod: 'This Stupid Beautiful Game We Love' *** The Timber Rattlers sent struggling RHP Justin Bullock to the mound hoping to end their eight-game skid. After giving up two home runs and three runs in the top of the first, Justin actually settled in and pitched a fine game retiring 12 in order before allowing a base runner in the fifth inning. Unfortunately, things didn't go the Timber Rattlers way as familiar recent patterns reared their heads - an inability to get timely and opportune hits and an inability for the bullpen to limit damages. Let's take a quick look at what I saw in this afternoon's contest and let's remind ourselves to stay positive: the young men are giving their all and the hits will come. There were many hard hit balls leading to a sour 2-for-14 mark with RISP. Baseball is a tricky tricky game just as Chris and Kyle's post-game podcast title alludes to, AND, keep in mind, these young men are still putting on kid's camps in the afternoon during this home series. Nine tough losses in a row but still showing up to leave a positive impression on the young ones. Three Quick Strikes: Even when the bullpen is struggling and the bats struggle to find that one or two key hits to turn the tide, the Timber Rattlers defense continues to shine. Check out these web gems from INF Antonio Piñero and OF Tristan Peters , respectively. These were absolutely key plays limiting what could have been further damage done to the T-Rats bullpen: The loss of INF/OF Tyler Black (BF's #7 prospect) to a club that had already lost Sal Frelick to promotion is huge. Outside of OF's Peters and Jackson Chourio, it's hard to know who the third fiddle will be on a given night. Joe Gray Jr. has a little hitting streak going, and has shown flashes at the plate in the past month, but he's still hitting sub 0.200 and not walking much at all. Flipping the script, INF/C/DH Wes Clarke continues to take free passes but the bat has gone relatively quiet and INF Ashton McGee has yet to stake a claim to a prolonged consistency in 2022 (his strikeout with men on first and second base was the last real opportunity the T-Rats had in the game). For a team walking an extremely tight line with a struggling bullpen suddenly lacking any real shutdown component, the offense is going to have to heat up or find aspects of itself hidden in the nooks and crannies of the batting cages and the dugout. Time will tell. We know the ball club will put the work in. Speaking of Gray Jr., he did manage to extend his hitting streak as part of another early lead claimed by the offense. Trailing 1-0, he hit an opposite field line drive single to right field to knot the game at one run apiece. He later took second base and Chourio stole home in a classic double steal, and the Rattlers led 2-1 early. Like all too often in recent memory during this nine game skid, that lead was short lived. As the game progressed, so faded any chance at victory. *** Carolina Pre-Game Notes Final: Carolina 7, Fayetteville (Astros) 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats' site, game details, please visit and review: Carolina Wins Fourth Straight, 7-5 in Fatyetteville - Jesus Chirinos Celebrated his 21st Birthday with a Three Hit, Three Run Night OF Eduarqui Fernandez 's first Low-A AB will go down in the history books as a caught-looking five-pitch strikeout. He managed a single and an RBI as part of a Mudcat three-run third inning where he also ended the inning caught stealing. It was a mixed bag in his first Low-A action including 2 more strikeouts (three total) but a 2-for-5 evening overall and his first double for good measure. We'll have to stay tuned in the games ahead. Ultimately, this was Jesus Chirinos ' night. Happy 21st birthday to the young man. He had quite possibly his best game of the year going 3-for-4 with three runs and a double. Three Quick Strikes: RHP Fernando Olguin hadn't pitched since early July but he brought his best stuff to the mound tonight taking his team through five complete innings of 2 R, 4 H, 3 BB, 2 K ball. It's been an up-and-down ride for Olguin since his ACL promotion, but night's like these will always give his team a chance. In a game where the Mudcats offense opportunistically scored seven runs (3-for-12 with RISP), one just might notice another stat for the young batters: 18 total strikeouts. Thankfully, the young men also managed to take eight free passes - led by the patient INF Zach Raabe 's three walks. The overwhelming youth on Victor Estevez's team would do well to simply pick up the plate discipline habits of Raabe and the precocious Hendry Mendez . 21-year-old RHP Jeferson Figueroa completed four innings of 6 K, 6 H, 2 ER ball for his first career save. A nice line, but, it certainly wasn't easy late. His ninth inning opened with consecutive singles and the runners advanced on a wild pitch. No outs and the tying run at the plate. It's a true testament to digging deep and finding his reserve as he struck out the very next batter on a bevy of full count pitches. Unfazed by an unfortunate Jheremy Vargas throwing error, and with the winning run at the plate, Figueroa struck out the next two batters and escaped to the dugout on a tight rope! *** DSL D-Backs Red 2, DSL Brewers #2 1 - Suspended in the bottom of the second inning Box Score/Game Log The Brewers 2 were one of seven games suspended in the DSL today with two additional games postponed due to raina. Through two innings pitched, lefty hurler Anfernny Reyes had given up two unearned runs (a throwing error was charged to OF Reminton Batista) with 2 H, 1 BB, 2 K. *** All eight teams will take to the diamond again tomorrow - DSL Brewers with their standard day games and the ACL with their standard western time zone evening games. Low-A through Triple-A will be playing all evening affairs. There really isn't much to digest in here as the game will be picked up and completed at a future date - yet to be announced. To that tune, we will see RHP Stiven Cruz for Carolina, RHP Israel Puello for Wisconsin, LHP Nick Bennett for Biloxi, and RHP Jason Alexander returns to the mound for Nashville for the first time since his prolonged stint with the Brewers. 17. All of Wisconsin slowed to a stop this fine evening. Their newest prodigal baseball son had arrived for his debut game at Fox Cities stadium. A quiet hush rolled through the land - it is rumored, the cows stopped mooing and even the beers ceased pouring. WHOA, let's not get ahead of ourselves! Many beers were poured. And then more beers were poured. Beers were poured in beers. That's more like it. The first pitch was tossed from the arm of lefty Russ Smith at 5:42 pm CST and a new center fielder manned the outfield grass: Jackson Chourio debuted in a Timber Rattlers jersey. And, folks, let me tell you: it was everything we could have asked for. This young man is absolutely, undeniably, special. Transactions: OF Eduarqui Fernandez was assigned to the Carolina Mudcats from the ACL Brewers Blue - he will be wearing jersey #15. Firstly, a brief word: You could make many an argument for highly coveted internet Game Balls to pitchers like LHP and DSL upstart Osbriel Mogollon, Biloxi's RHP Victor Castaneda, Carolina's RHP Alexander Cornielle continuing his recent run of excellent starting pitching work, RHP Cam Robinson and his first save in Double-A after a scoreless frame, RHP Ryan Middendorf and three more scoreless 4 K innings of work in Carolina (un-scored upon in his three outings since his ACL promotion), RHP Justin Topa's successful return to Triple-A relief, RHP Nash Walters got a key out in 1/3 innings of work and extended his scoreless streak to well over a month, and hey it's three more scoreless innings from the great Nashville bullpen. These are all great things. BUT, folks, tonight is about the future of the Brewers outfield. It is extremely bright. And, heck, OF Hendry Mendez - who continued his scorching hot July - didn't even get on the list with a 3-for-3 two-run, 1 rbi, 2 SB evening. And, it would appear, he stole home to claim the Mudcats first run! Let's all take a breath and ponder what that Brewers outfield might look like in the years ahead. And, now, let's get into the game recaps! *** Carolina Pre-Game Notes (Note: contrary to the published pre-game notes, the Mudcats are playing Fayetteville not Down East) Final: Carolina 7, Fayetteville (Astros) 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats' site, game details, please visit and review: Mendez Collects Three Hits in 7-3 Victory OF Hedbert Perez took on the unenviable task of replacing Jackson Chourio in center field for the Mudcats. As noted above in the 'Transactions', we'll soon be seeing a healthy dose of 20-year-old outfielder, Eduarqui Fernandez. However, on this night, the fill-in was really Oswel Leones who took left field and batted second in the Mudcats lineup. RHP Alexander Cornielle came into tonight's game with three previous starts in July in what has proven to be his best month for Low-A Carolina: 17 IP, 13 H, 5 BB, 16 K, 4 ER, 2.12 ERA, 0.210 BAA, 1.06 WHIP. So, how did Cornielle and the upstart Mudcats perform? Quite well. Quite well, indeed. Three Quick Strikes: RHP Alexander Cornielle is quickly carving a name for himself in the Brewers pitching stable. Where current Mudcats Ace Carlos F. Rodriguez has seen his K:BB ratio narrow across his season, Alexander has seen it steadily improve to a now comfortable 2.5-3:1 gap. He's also lowered his WHIP considerably and it's giving his team a legitimate chance to claim victory every time he takes the hill. Tonight's line: 5 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 3 ER, 9 K. That will play most nights. This is one of our most exciting young pitchers. If you don't know his name, it's time you start to learn it. You've been politely advised. It's time to really start placing more value on what we're seeing from OF Hendry Mendez in July. Heading into tonight's contest he had hit to the tune of 0.348 in 69 lead-off AB's with an 0.871 OPS as the, then, second youngest player in Low-A. Well, now he is the youngest player after Chourio's promotion. With his running-mate gone to High-A, Mendez continued to play like a stud. This young man has an incredibly smooth level lefty swing and he has an extremely disciplined approach in the batters box sporting a ridiculous 53K:50BB on the season. There's no telling where his game will go, but, all the tools are there. The sky is the limit. You've been politely advised again. RHP Ryan Middendorf continued his excellent work since his ACL promotion. He held down three pivotal innings late with a mere single hit and four punch outs. He has yet to concede a run in Low-A - albeit, in a mere three outings, but, it is noteworthy he has 10 K to 0 BB. This is an exciting journey to witness from afar and could be another feel good Indy reclamation project for the Brewers organization. A special mention will also go to the continued improvements we've witnessed from RHP Miguel Guerrero since he was sent back to Carolina from the Wisconsin bullpen. Guerrero pitched a scoreless ninth inning tonight for the Mudcats with a walk and two strikeouts. *** Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Cedar Rapids (Twins) 10, Wisconsin 4 Box Score/Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers' site, game details, please visit and review: Kernels Storm Past Wisconsin - Rattlers See 4-1 Lead Evaporate in 10-4 Loss The Timber Rattlers came home to Fox Cities stadium to try and recoup some semblance of winning ways. Entering tonight's contest, even though they led the overall Kernels series 8-4 in 2022, the Rattlers had lost seven straight games overall. Fresh off a 1-5 series in West Michigan and an 0-3 series in Beloit, could a Chourio bat in the lineup fix these woes? Well, aside from that misleading score (it was a one-run ball game heading into the ninth), this was another heartbreaking loss for the Timber Rattlers. Make that eight straight losses overall and now tied with West Michigan at six game back of first place in the second half standings. The silver lining? Outside of Chourio's debut, it is a home series for the T-Rats so let's start with their illustrious media offering(s): It doesn't look like tonight's meltdown was inviting for a post-game podcast. Hopefully, we'll get some in the games ahead. Three Quick Strikes: One things I've noticed in many a Russ Smith start in 2022 is his fastball has a propensity to tail away from him - it's a bit like a slight slice off a tee-box. It would be one thing if this was used as a tool ahead in the count, but, really, it seems to happen on the regular and it often gets Smith behind and in unfavorable 2-0 counts. This was the case to start tonight's game as he walked his third batter and, with two down, fell behind 2-0 again to the Kernels' DH Yunier Severino. Severino ripped the very next pitch into far left field scoring a runner and grabbing third on the throw home. If I could name one thing I'd love to see from Smith moving forward: more control and more pitches in and closer to the zone. Smith walked three and hit a batter tonight. The hit batter led to a mistake change-up the same Severino ripped over the wall in left field making it a 4-3 game. All told, Smith finished a quality start with six complete innings and three runs surrendered. Jackson Chourio began his High-A career by corralling the first Kernels out on a routine fly out to right center field. He followed that up with a hit - a rope line drive single off the edge of the infield dirt and into left center field on his very first swing in High-A ball. He then closed the second inning with a running basket catch in right center field preventing a run from scoring in the process. Quite the transition to High-A. It didn't stop there, however. Chourio worked a count full for a walk in his second trip to home plate. He then ripped a double off the wall in deep right field for his first rbi in his third at bat. 3. One of the ongoing issues I've witnessed during the Timber Rattlers losing streak is a rough adjustment to the loss of RHP's Kent Hasler and, now, RHP Cam Robinson. The bullpen is thinner and has lost its primary early-season late innings talent. This is going to take some time for manager Joe Ayrault to find the right mix beyond RHP James Meeker who seems to be their current stalwart. They'll need improvements from RHP Joey Matulovich and RHP Christian Tripp to help solidify things. And, they'll desperately need RHP's Taylor Floyd and Hobie Baker to play more effectively - they've both struggled for stretches of 2022. If you want to see the unraveling of a relief pitcher and some very weird head games played by a home plate umpire, watch Floyd's ninth inning work this evening. It was ugly stuff. Here's hoping he can recover. *** Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 5, Montgomery (Rays) 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please visit and review: Speed Wins the Day in Shuckers 5-3 Victory - Castañeda Matches Season High with Six Quality Innings Since returning to the Shuckers pitching staff from a 20-day IL stint June 23rd, it has been a very real struggle for RHP Victor Castaneda. To date, in the 16 innings he had pitched, he had surrendered 16 runs. In July, previous to this start, Castaneda had a 2.42 WHIP while batters were hitting to the tune of 0.396. Something was very off for a pitcher who was absolutely dealing heading into June. How long will it take for him to find the form of April and May when he surrendered 14 runs in 44 innings? Time will tell. Let's see how the stacked Shuckers' lineup fared as they looked to support a hopeful Castaneda rebound performance. Three Quick Strikes: IF this is a version of OF Garrett Mitchell we're going to see with any semblance of regularity, "Shiver me timbers!", I say. How about an opposite field bomb - his sixth double in 9 games since his return (!!) - to tie the game at one apiece? Mitchell has all the tools you'd want in an outfielder - he has decent size, a solid arm, incredible wheels, and he is simply just an incredibly smooth and agile athlete. His recent string of play absolutely showcases why he was drafted in the first round. It really comes down to staying healthy. My fingers are crossed. Frankly, they're losing circulation. Much like with Chourio above, it didn't stop there for Mitchell. His speed absolutely wreaks havoc on the base paths. Just watch this slide and break-up beating the double play grounder, causing the misfired throw to first, and then stealing home base when it's all said and done. It's simply beautiful: 2. As Joey Wiemer continues his ongoing offensive snooze fest, there's yet another Shuckers outfielder who is scorching hot since his return from the IL: Sal Frelick. He hit lead-off again tonight and finished 2-for-5 with a deep double off the wall in right field and later tagged a solo shot to extend the Shuckers lead late. Here's a glimpse at the double. The hip flip and smash to right field is becoming a common occurrence these days: About that hip flip: The operative phrase we use here is: "Oh Baby!" 3. We will take the Victor Castañeda 6 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 ER (a solo shot) and run to the hills. More of this, please, Mr. Castaneda! His broader July numbers will still look quite ugly but this is the sign of a possible return to his earlier dominant form. I'm all for that. Also of note on the mound tonight: Cam Robinson picked up his first save in Double-A and RHP Nash Walters extended his scoreless outing streak to 15 outings. *** Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 5, Charlotte (White Sox) 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, please visit and review: Mathias and Turang Homer in Nashville's Win - Tyler Herb Delivers Quality Start in Homestand Opener The Sounds received a much needed quality start from Tyler Herb (although it wasn't all roses - he did work around eight hits and a couple walks) and got a vintage performance from their constantly shuffling but almost always dominant bullpen. Brice Turang continued to do July Brice Turang things - he's on a tear, folks. Get excited. Mark Mathias proved his AAAA merit yet again. And, hey, Keston Hiura appears to be a part of the most unlikely of left field rotations with C/OF Jakson Reetz. Boy, the things that happen in a baseball season. Three Quick Strikes: Let's get back to Brice Turang: 27th multi-hit game for the Sounds after tonight, 21st stolen base (tied for 6th in the International League), 13 game on-base streak, 69 AB/ 0.319 BA/ 0.973 OPS/ 3 HR/ 5 2B/ 1 3B/ 7 SB/ 13 BB:17 K in July. 22 years old. Oh, have I mentioned he's an absolutely incredible fielder? I could showcase his third home run of the month, but, I'm a sucker for defense. He does this on a weekly basis, folks. He's an absolute joy to watch: It's quite easy to say INF/OF Weston Wilson hasn't had the season he'd like at the plate. But, the flexibility he offers manager Rick Sweet throughout the diamond has been absolutely key in a year where injuries have struck often; players have been shuffled between the Taxi Squad and Brewers roster; and players have requested trades or their release to head for more playing opportunity elsewhere. Weston has played through it all. And, occasionally, he offers us a play like this: Is RHP Justin Topa next in the Brewers bullpen shuffle? We know he's on a rehab assignment, so the obvious guess is: 'Yes?' Regardless, he pitched an effective scoreless inning in his inaugural rehab outing in Nashville's bullpen. It will be interesting to see how the Brewers address some ongoing issues in their middle innings (especially considering RHP Trevor Gott's ongoing struggles), but, if all goes well for Justin and he faces no setbacks we could be seeing him in Milwaukee's pen sooner than later. *** DSL Phillies White 3, DSL Brewers #1 1 Box Score/Game Log Oh, to lose 3-1 when you outhit your opponents a whopping 4-2. It was one of those baseball games. LHP Osbriel Mogollon continued his fantastic 2022 DSL season. He went 4 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 4 K's and lowered that ERA to a pristine 1.03. The unfortunate Brewers 1 hurler who will be credited with the loss is RHP Braudin Ciprian. All three runs went unearned and, well, largely due to Braudin's self-induced mistakes. After Braudin mishandled a throw off a sacrifice bunt, we see a fielding error by INF Gery Holguin, and then a wild pitch. Three runs crossed home plate and that was the ballgame. The Brewers 1 finished 1-for-11 with RISP failing to take advantage of a lead-off Arnys Rodriguez double in the sixth. *** DSL Brewers #2 9, DSL Texas Red (Rangers) 2 Box Score/Game Log INF/OF Yeison Perez continued to do 2022 Yeison things: 2-for-4, 1 R, 1 2B (8th on the year), 1 BB. Yeison is now hitting 0.329 with a 1.094 OPS in 85 AB's. INF Juan Baez went 2-for-4 in the lead off slot playing shortstop once again. OF Reminton Batista scored three runs going 1-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout (a passed ball explains the third run). Really, this final result surely seems to be largely in part to the combined six scoreless innings of bullpen work from RHP Daurys Mora (who picked up the win with his 3 IP, 3 K, 2 H, 1 BB work), 21-year-old RHP Roman Perez (2 IP, 1 H, 2 K), and 18-year-old Franddy De Los Santos (1 IP, 1 BB, 0 H). *** ACL Reds 9, ACL Brewers Gold 3 Box Score/Game Log 2-for-11 with RISP isn't going to win most nights. 2022 ACL stalwarts, INF's Jadher Areinamo and Jose Caballero went a combined 0-for-7 with 3 K's. Down 9-0, the Brewers Gold managed a brief three-run mini-rally in the top-half of the sixth inning. It all ended there, however. We'll give a special nod and mention to RHP Fray Morelo who pitched his first clean inning since June 30th - 1 IP, 0 H, O BB, 2 K. *** ACL Brewers Blue 8 ACL Cubs 4 Box Score/Game Log This is officially a mini-blurb about OF Jace Avina. He hit his ACL-leading 9th home run tonight in a mere 100 AB's - a three-run blast to take the lead and secure the victory. He knocked across five rbi's and his 25th rbi in the same 100 AB's. His swing is smooth like silk. He comes across as the most likable young athlete I've seen in some time. He is just an easy young man to root for. May he prosper. May he find the ability to cut down on the strikeouts. And, may he give his all to enter the piranha tank of talent that is the Brewers organizational outfield depth. This is also a RHP Quinton Low post. Still scoreless out of the bullpen, baby. Two weeks off to play some offense? No sweat. Quinton will pitch another clean sheet. *** Another night passes, but, boy was it a good one from the vantage point of prospects. The organization won some. The organization lost some. But, the prospects really shined and that's what we're all here for. Stay tuned tomorrow as the Timber Rattlers look to stop their skid in a matinee affair - RHP Justin Bullock will look for an elusive quality start. RHP TJ Shook and RHP Caleb Boushley are highlights on the hill for Biloxi and Nashville, respectively, in the evening contests. The DSL Brewers 1 will have the day off but the DSL Brewers 2 will look to make it two in a row as they face DSL D-Backs Red. Both ACL teams will take the day off to rest or possibly fine-tune their crafts. As always, thank you for checking in. 19. I'm going to offer: For as much as I (and we) love RHP Carlos Rodriguez, it's clear to me he doesn't have his best stuff right now. It's still 100% 'good enough' for Low A, but his K:BB ratio is falling off and batters are hitting him. I would love to see some improvements over the last month of the season to feel even better about 2023. He's obviously having a fantastic season overall, but, he's hit a classic wall as I see it watching the games.
  20. Joe Ayrault has been extremely complimentary toward Tristan Peters all season long - before he was trending to the top of many the Midwest Leagues offensive categories. He discusse his professional purpose-driven approach in that postgame pod above. Always so great to get the Home series T-Rats media machine rolling!
  21. Choice prizes. Couldn't go to more worthy 'Fanatics'. Awesome posters. Awesome fans. Offering meaningful and thought-provoking commentary on the regular. Cheers to all of you!
  22. The ACL Brewers will return to the diamond tomorrow in Maryvale, but until that time it is all DSL coverage all the time as the DSL Brewers 1 and 2 went head-to-head yet again. This contest featured a potential up-and-coming 20-year-old right-hander in one Jeral Vizcaino - he has really come on in July and is building on an already impressive resume of relief and starting work. All told, we flipped the script today and the DSL Brewers 2 literally pitched a shutout over the DSL Brewers 1. The two squads finished their two-game series this week 1-1. Transactions: It would appear we have a couple of new arms headed to the DSL Brewers 1 pitching staff: *** In a week with limited action until the latter half, I will again focus on our great content in the Minor League Forums - the game threads in particular. I again encourage each and every one of you passionate Brewers fans to head on over and join is in our ongoing discussions. Today, for instance, we discussed the intriguing and wonderfully uneventful but highly consistent work of 17-year-old INF (primarily shortstop in 2022) Juan Baez: Our very own @damuelleand our Minor League aficionado (and, frankly, a Brewers Minor League expert in his own right) @CheeseheadInQCdiscussed his 2022 season HERE. In long-hand form, here are the highlights: Baez is having one of the least interesting good seasons in the system. Not least interesting from a prospect perspective, but just that there hasn't seemed to be much in the way of peaks and valleys lately. He seems to show up, go 1-3, occasionally throw in a walk. These types of casual deep dives happen often in our game threads. This is where you real Fanatics will want to go to get beyond the reports and into the finer details of the players we follow and root on every day. Baez led off for the Brewers 2 today and, well, went 1-for-2 with a walk (he also reached base by a HBP). On to the game recap... DSL Brewers 2 6, DSL Brewers 1 0 Box Score/Game Log This one was really about the shutdown work of rising RHP Jeral Vizcaino . As I noted in the same Game Thread above: He is really coming on in interesting fashion and has fast become a young hurler to keep our eyes on. He appears to be, early at least, another 2022 international free agent signee putting that $10,000 bonus money to work. Here's to more shutdown results! Of additional note in this particular game, the Brewers 2 successfully stole eight bases with not a single runner thrown out on the base paths. DSL Brewers 1 catcher Roman La Torre is going to want to sleep this one off. Without seeing the actual game, we obviously can't fully understand what happened here, but an 8-for-8 success in steals is not ideal for defensive or pitching success. The DSL Brewers 1 will hope to change this outcome in the games ahead. All told, we saw two shutdown innings (one inning apiece) between 17-year-old lefty, Jose Meneses, and 21-year-old RHP Nelson Cuevas who continues to pitch those late innings for the DSL Brewers 2. Every Brewers 2 batter reached base except 19-year-old OF prospect Jose Gonzalez, who left after a third inning fly out and gave way to Irving Igualas in right field. What can be said of the DSL Brewers 1 offense on the day? Well, the managed to knock two hits and finished 0-for-2 with RISP. They'll look to regroup tomorrow. *** Stay tuned tomorrow as we discuss any transactions, injury updates, news or otherwise and the DSL Brewers 1 and DSL Brewers 2 head off to play the Tigers 1 and Cardinals squads, respectively. And, as I noted above, both the ACL Brewers Gold and Blue will return to the diamonds to continue working on their craft in Maryvale. Additionally, just around the bend on Friday all full season clubs will return to competition in hopes of wiping away the struggles heading into the All-Star Break.
