  1. With matinee games to get things going and Biloxi going for a 1 1/2 game affair, we had a full day of activity even though the DSL and ACL Brewers had days off. Stiven Cruz and Jeison Pena flexed their collective pitching muscles in Zebulon, the Biloxi bullpen...um...we'll get to that, Israel Puello continued his High-A dominance, and the Sounds lost another nail biter one-run affair. Let's get into the report! Transactions: RHP Connor Sadzeck had his contract selected by the Brewers - a big congrats to Connor who is having an excellent and consistent season shutting things down in key innings for the Nashville Sounds. 1B/2B/DH Keston Hiura was optioned to Triple-A Nashville (leaving many to scratch their heads) RHP Luis Perdomo was sent to the Nashville Sounds on a rehab assignment *** Before I get into today's games, I'd like to share some highlights from Brewers ACL 24-year-old southpaw Leoni De La Cruz. I highlighted fellow 24-year-old righty, Ryan Middendorf, yesterday (and, honestly, quite often in the Minor League daily game threads). Well, De La Cruz is the yin to Middendorf's yang. In my humble opinion, it is simply a matter of time before both young men head to higher levels given their age and continued stellar results: *** Carolina Pre-Game Notes Final: Carolina 1, Delmarva (Orioles) 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats' site, game details, please visit and review: Carolina Ends Six Game Skid with 1-0 Victory - Stiven Cruz Totaled Eight Strikeouts Over Six Scoreless Innings in the 1-0 Victory Coming off his most recent outing in Kannapolis where he gave up five earned runs, 20-year-old RHP Stiven Cruz was looking for the scoreless success he discovered earlier in July versus Fayetteville. Luckily for the Mudcats, he certainly found his Ace form today at Five County Stadium. When all was said and done, Cruz limited the Shorebirds to a mere four hits and one walk over six complete eight strikeout innings. Check out his wily leg kick and strikeout work here: Not to be outdone, recently promoted (July 6th) 19-year-old RHP Jeison Pena strutted more of his excellent stuff in just his second outing for Carolina: 3 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 3 K. Pena is definitely one to keep an eye on in the second half - he has 10 strikeouts in his two relief outings. Three Key Observations: (1) In a game where the majority of the line-up was shut down (and Jackson Chourio was inactive), SS Eduardo Garcia willed his team to victory. Going 3-for-3 on the afternoon, scoring the winning and only run, and swiping two bases (12 on the season) was all the Mudcats needed to pull out the close victory. Garcia still has quite a bit of work to do to evolve his game at the plate (105k:14bb), but it's games like these coupled with his already stellar defense that keep you very engaged with his progress. The second swiped base led to an errant throw to second and he advanced to third base. It was a game-changing play. Here's to many more in the games ahead! (2) Coming off a game in which he knocked his third home run of 2022, Jesus Chirinos gave his Mudcats teammate a look at a fantastic situational at bat in a crucial spot. With a 1-1 count, Chirinos was able to patiently muscle an off-speed breaking ball to the gap between left and center fields: Chirinos also logged two walks on the day. In a day where the majority of his teammates struggled to find success, he did his best to work in tandem with Eduardo Garcia . The shift to first base from behind the plate certainly has been easy, but, stacking successes like these has to give the young man confidence. (3) The five through nine spots in the Mudcats batting order pulled off an 0-for-15, 1 bb, 6 k performance. The ongoing challenge Victor Estevez faces as the Mudcats manager, with such a youth-filled team, largely relates to somehow coaxing more production from a bevy of players struggling to hit the ball. The numbers don't lie, frankly, and if and when Chourios is promoted these Mudcats are going to have a tough time replacing that production anywhere in the lineup - individually or collectively. This being said, these same struggles also pave the way for players in the DSL and ACL to find a promotional pathway. This will be something to pay attention to as the 2022 season comes to an end and the 2023 Mudcats roster begins taking shape. *** Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Wisconsin 5, West Michigan (Tigers) 2 Box Score/Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers' site, game details, please visit and review: Wisconsin Survives for 5-2 Decision in Eleven Innings - Puello Allowed One Run on One Hit in Seven Innings as Rattlers Starter RHP Israel Puello has been putting on an absolute clinic of how to take a promotion and run with it since leaving Carolina - it's truly hard to fathom what the young hurler has accomplished given the circumstances. Puello has now faced three of the Midwest League's toughest teams in Cedar Rapids, South Bend, and West Michigan and, after today's dominant outing, this is what he has put into the record books: 19 IP, 3 ER, 2 HR, 7H (!!), 5 BB, 16 K, 1 HB. Opponents are hitting sub-0.150 against him with a 0.63 WHIP. Great googly-moogly! Here's to more of that. This is definitively one of the more pleasant and awe-inspiring surprises of 2022 as far as I am concerned. Three Key Observations: (1) A day after lauding the fine season from OF Tristan Peters , the young Canadian continued to shine. Batting in the clean-up spot, he went 2-for-4 including the go ahead RBI triple in the pivotal 11th inning. We'll forget about being picked off first base, the young man continues to produce in key spots. You'll be hard-pressed to find a more complete performer in the entire system in 2022. (2) OF Terence Doston made two stellar plays in extras - including a chef's kiss bunt down the first base line to lead off the tenth inning (2-for-4 on the day). It isn't often you see a fabulous bunt these days. Let me tell you baseball nerds: it was glorious. The same can not be said for Jose Acosta' s failed bunt the ensuing at bat, but, alas, Doston showed how it's done. Then, with one down in the bottom of the tenth and Whitecaps on second and third base, Doston stood in extremely shallow center field awaiting a chance to pounce on potential shallow pop ups or liners. He definitively doesn't have a plus arm, so to ensure even the chance at a fly out throw 'em out this was the only workable field position. And, the perfect line out followed. A little luck off the mound (the throw fell well short of home plate) - the bounce and roll were true and skidded perfectly down the mound into the waiting mitt of Darrien Miller who steadfastly held onto the ball as the baserunner slid into his glove and under his body. It was on to the eleventh where the T-Rats plated their winning runs. Doston made winning plays in extras. A game ball is definitely deserved. (3) When it rains it pours and RHP Taylor Floyd can attest to this. When your season has run away from you a bit, it's innings like today's ninth frame that say it all. Floyd was the recipient of some incredibly bad luck and misfortune. It's a true testament to his resilience he left the inning with a tie ball game. It started with a seeing eye looping liner past the outstretched dive of Acosta (I still don't know how the ball found its way beyond his mitt). The ensuing batter hit an absolutely weak top-spun chopper oddly bouncing off the pitcher's mound and beyond the outstretched glove of a charging Acosta (who was trying to both evade the runner running to second base while simultaneously making a read on the weird hop). The very next batter hit another weak grounder directly under the hurried glove of a charging Zavier Warren at third base. The bases were juiced, suddenly, with zero outs and you could argue not a single ball should have left the infield. With better luck, there very well could have been three outs and a game completed! Ultimately, Floyd was credited with the blown save but he did get the victory. *** Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Game 1 Final: Tennessee (Cubs) 11, Biloxi 7 Game 2 Final: Tennessee 5, Biloxi 3 Game 1: Box Score / Game Log Game 2: Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please visit and review: Smokies Storm Back to Win Suspended Game, Take Game Two 5-3 - Mitchell Goes 3-for-4 in Return from Injured List It's always nice to resume a suspended game and send nine men to the plate while putting up a five-spot right off the bat. This was the case for the Shuckers and they took a 1-1 game and made it 6-1 after they completed their top half of the fifth inning. However, if you think it's ever smooth sailing for the Shuckers in 2022 you are sadly mistaken. The Biloxi bullpen managed to give up a seven-spot before a single out in the seventh. Ultimately, the Shuckers felt even more generous and gave up three more runs for a 10-run inning. Woooof! They then fell short in the seven-inning shortened second game after LHP Nick Bennet gave up two deciding home runs - 5 ip, 8 hits, 0 bb, 5 k's, 5 runs (4 earned) - while the Shuckers offense went 2-for-11 with RISP. Three Key Observations: (1) Welcome back Sal Frelick and Tristen Lutz! Frelick hit an RBI single to get the fifth inning rally going in Game 1 and he had a web gem to grab out number one to start bottom of fifth. Lutz also smashed a 3-RBI double deep to the wall in right center to keep the fifth inning rally alive. Here's the Frelick grab in left center - what a jump: (2) Let's add another 'Welcome back!' to OF Garrett Mitchell seeing his first Double-A game action in what feels like months - well, actually, it has been a couple months - quite the 7-Day IL stint! Mitchell stepped right into the five spot in the batting order in game 2 and proceeded to go 3-for-4 (all singles) with a run and an RBI. As the Shuckers continue to ride their roller coaster season trying to find any semblance of consistency, they are going to need a healthy and impactful Mitchell to stay in the lineup. Let's hope he can finish off his 2022 campaign with plenty of reason for optimism. It's just so different when you have Frelick's and Mitchell's wheels spinning down the base paths: 3) Real Talk: The most glaring and concerning ongoing issues for the Shuckers - bullpen meltdowns and fundamentally unsound baseball - reared their heads in a Smokies 10-run seventh inning in Game 1. Robbie Hitt and Harold Chirino were getting absolutely smacked around the park and outfielders were flexing throwing muscles to the detriment of missing relay throws left and right. All three runners who advanced to second on said forced throws scored. These weren't credited as errors as they are subjective decisions, but, let's also call it like it is: the Shuckers lead the Southern League by 15 errors committed. 2022 just hasn't been kind down yonder in Double-A. *** Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Memphis (Cardinals) 3 , Nashville 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, please visit and review: Sounds Edged Out by Memphis - Tyler White's First Inning Homer Not Enough as Nashville Drops Third Straight Four more riveting scoreless innings from the Sounds shutdown bullpen were not enough to overcome another ho-hum start from LHP Ethan Small . It's been a very mixed bag since Ethan got smacked around a bit in his MLB debut, and tonight was unfortunately another pedestrian line and performance: 5 IP, 3 ER, 4 H, 4 BB, 4 K, 1 HR (a tying two-run jack). The walks continue, unfortunately. In the near-term, we simply don't know which version of the promising lefty we are going to get. We all know what he's capable of, but we'd be lying to ourselves if we didn't recognize: the ongoing walks are a problem as is the over-reliance on a two-pitch mix. Miles to go, and there is ample room for optimism and positivity, but the journey suddenly feels filled with more obstacles than originally forecasted. Sometimes, it's better to serve these opinions cold than to dish them freely and piping hot! ? Three Key Observations: (1) Pablo Reyes, Brice Turang, and Tyler White led the Nashville batting order going a combined 5-for-11 with 2 runs, 2 RBI (all via White's two-run blast), and a walk. They set the tone. However, the rest of the line-up absolutely did not follow this lead: starting with Jon Singleton batting clean-up on down through Brian Navarreto in the nine-slot, Sounds batters combined to go 1-for-21 with 2 walks and 8 k's. Check please! Waiter?!? Check please! (2) A public service announcement: do not sleep on Brice Turang 's age 22 season. Sometimes we hyper-focus on OPS a bit too much - I am a victim of this as well. But, heck, if we want to hyper-focus on OPS let's simply look at his 0.926 OPS sample from July. After a 2-for-4 night at the plate, Turang now further leads the Sounds with 25 multi-hit games, he has hit safely in six straight (the fifth time this season he has hit safely in five or more straight games), and he is now fourth in the International League with 92 hits. Couple this with his fantastic defense and his overall smarts and you have a surefire MLB player. It is quite simply a matter of time. For all the talk of top Brewers prospects, Turang is seemingly consistently overlooked. It's right time we stop doing this. (3) After tonight's loss, the Sounds trail the Redbirds in their season series 3-5. The Sounds division lead fell to 4 1/2 games over these same Redbirds. It's fitting a Cardinals affiliate and a Brewers affiliate are going toe-to-toe in hotly contested match-ups that may just decide the division altogether. All told, the two teams will face each other 16 more times this year (including the four remaining home games for Nashville in this series). Given what I've seen in these first two contests, I'd say the one missing ingredient for the Sounds is the bats simply need to wake up. There haven't been many chances for either club, but the Redbirds are 2-for-13 with RISP whereas the Sounds are 0-for-10. Both games were decided by one run. You can do the math. *** That's a wrap for my reports this week. I certainly hope I can pass the baton toward more organizational victories in the days ahead as I've definitely paid my dues and watched some tough losses. Remember, the DSL and ACL teams will be back on the diamond tomorrow. Taking the mound in the higher level contests will be (Low-A to Triple-A, respectively) Edwin Jimenez, Russ Smith, Brandon Knarr, and Josh Lindbolm . Here's hoping they bring their best stuff and we see many victories! As always, thanks for reading. 2. Carolina and Nashville returned to their home ballparks while Wisconsin and Biloxi continued road trips at West Michigan and Tennessee, respectively. The DSL Brewers 1 and 2 faced off in a heated contest - friends and teammates bringing out the best in each other. Meanwhile in the ACL, the Brewers Gold faced the ACL Cubs while the ACL Brewers Blue battled the formidable 17-9 ACL Guardians. Let's get into the report! Transactions: (Including Monday 7/11) Best of luck to OF David Dahl as he looks to latch on to a MLB club. It was a true pleasure watching him play the outfield for the Nashville Sounds. Just in: Angel Perdomo pitched one inning of one hit, two strikeout work in his first rehab assignment. Additionally, LHP, and recently promoted, Justin King has been placed on the 7-Day IL by the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. The DSL Brewers 1 and Brewers 2 faced each other yet again and our very own @damuelle was all over the coverage: HERE Mentioned within the quoted summary above, lefty Osbriel Mogollon (an early season favorite in our daily Minor League Game Threads) was featured on the Brewers Player Development Twitter Page yesterday: There's a little 'young Andy Otero' vibe going on here with Osbriel. It will be interesting to see how he develops and grows! *** ACL Cubs 11, ACL Brewers 9 Box Score/Game Log With the score 11-9 Cubs in the top of the seventh, I had to remind myself: the ACL Cubbies had a nine-run first inning! What was, perhaps, even more surprising: RHP Ryan Middendorf conceded runs - two of them (!) - losing grip of a brief tie game in the sixth inning. Yet, he still did ACL Ryan Middendorf things: 2 ip, 4 hits, 2 er, 5 k's. We'll look past this minor blemish: he belongs in Low-A. Let's see what he can do, please. The Brewers Gold missed out on their key bases loaded no out opportunity in the top of the seventh and final inning - a three-pitch strikeout, a first pitch pop-up to second base, and a three-pitch strikeout ended the chance and the game. Yuck! This being said, let's honor the fine work in the ninth spot of the batting order and the lead-off spot - Diego Larez and Jadher Areinamo , respectively. Larez went 1-for-1 with two runs, one rbi, and three walks improving his OPS to 0.760 in the process. Areinamo was hitless in an 0-for-2 evening but also drew three free passes, plated a run, and grabbed a rbi. ACL Guardians 5, ACL Brewers Blue 3 Box Score/Game Log A fine night at the plate for OF Eduarqui Fernandez batting clean-up and going 2-for-4 with two runs, one rbi, and his fourth home run. It would appear the five ACL Brewers Blue errors were their demise: of the five Guardians runs that crossed the dish only one was earned. That's not going to win many ball games. A successful rehab return for LHP Angel Perdomo and two-way 2021 13th round draft pick RHP Quinton Low remains un-scored upon in his seven complete innings of relief work. Carolina Pre-Game Notes Final: Delmarva (Orioles) 7, Carolina 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats' site, game details, please visit and review: Chirinos Homers in 7-3 Loss to Delmarva - The Loss Was Carolina's Sixth Straight, Matching Their Longest Losing Streak of the Season Coming off five straight losses to close the series in Kannapolis, the Mudcats were back at Zebulon's Five County Stadium in hopes of a rebound performance. Taking the mound for Carolina was RHP Miguel Segura . In a season where he has now walked more batters than he has struck out (52bb:51k), the men on base continued to set the tone for this particular start - 5 ip, 7 hits, 3 bb, 4 runs, 3 earned. Segura will see his already 1.60 WHIP rise slightly after tonight's outing. Leading 2-1 heading into the fifth inning, Segura gave up a first pitch home run and the game was tied 2-2. Two more runs would plate that inning - via a walk, single, wild pitch, and double in consecutive at bats - and the Mudcats trailed the remainder of the game and ultimately lose their fifth straight 7-3. Three Key Observations: (1) It isn't often Jackson Chourio is highlighted for a negative reason, but on a team with erratic offense the Mudcats overly rely on his bat. Tonight, unfortunately, was a night that will send Chourio back to the proverbial drawing board: 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. (2) In a season filled with only brief spurts of excellence, Hedbert Perez has mainly been an afterthought. Coming into this game, the young outfielder had gone 4-for-28 (0.143 BA) with a couple walks over his past eight games. Struggles like these have put Perez lower in the batting order, unfortunately. Batting sixth tonight, Perez went 3-for-4 with his 14th double and eighth stolen base, but, ultimately, the bottom of the order were incapable of taking advantage. The main issue to date, as I've seen it, is Perez rarely walks - 93 k's: 19 bb's - and, as a result his OBP has really taken a hit (0.274). Lots to improve in the second half. Let's hope we see it. It wasn't all dry desert behind Perez. Jesus Chirinos managed a solo shot early: (3) Let's do a mini deep dive as to why I continue to be quite bullish on catcher Jeferson Quero (BF's #8 prospect). We know he is young, he has the frame and body-type and athleticism to catch your attention but with his recent surge at the plate (1-for-3, 2 runs tonight batting in the three-hole) his defensive numbers really start to add punctuation. Quero, at age 19, is second in all of Minor League baseball with 30 caught steals. Tonight, he picked a runner off third base - I've seen him grab runners at first throughout the season and he's had several other near misses. He trusts his eyes, he's quick to his feet, and he has a cannon. Do not sleep on what is perhaps our most intriguing catching prospect in the system. Apologies, Jakson Reetz ...the Hype Train has more than one track! Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes West Michigan (Tigers) 1, Wisconsin 0 Box Score/Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers' site, game details, please visit and review: Whitecaps Beat Rattlers 1-0 - Holton's RBI Single in Bottom of the Ninth Beats Wisconsin It was clear early, despite my conspiratorial trade suggestions in the Minor League Game Thread ?, the plan for LHP Antoine Kelly was quick work and then rest up for an upcoming Sunday opportunity in the MLB All-Star Futures game. Kelly was dealing early and often. Robbed of one strikeout on a pitch that must have caught too much Middle, he went three complete innings when all was said and done. Zero hits. 44 pitches. One walk and two strikeouts. Much to the pleasure of the Whitecaps' announcers, he was shelved and made way for RHP Joey Matulovich. Three Key Observations: (1) Tristan Peters came off a 7-for-24 series in South Bend and grabbed a single through the short stop and second base gap early in this one. He finished 1-for-4 on the evening. As noted by the Whitecaps' announcers, Tristan has been solid all year long; plays excellent defense; and has some speed on the base paths. He is absolutely a key reason the Timber Rattlers have had so much success in 2022 and with Carlos Rodriguez shelved for the season they are going to continue needing his consistent presence. (2) Hats off to Malutovich for his three complete innings of scoreless middle relief. Filling in for Kelly and his brief 'no hitter', Matulovich only surrendered a couple hits, did not walk a batter, and struck three men out. With Cam Robinson and Kent Hasler in Double-A, the T-Rats are going to need more outings like this. (3) He doesn't get mentioned often in our reports, but that isn't for lack of solid and meaningful production. Jose Acosta was acquired via trade with the Texas Rangers in late May and has been a solid and steady contributor at second base for the Timber Rattlers. After a 2-for-3 evening batting seventh, Acosta is batting 9-for-28 in eight games of action in July with a double, a home run, four walks, and four rbi's. He is fulfilling his role as a contributor lower in the order. It's a pleasant and unexpected surprise. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 1 , Tennessee (Cubs) 1 - POSTPONED: Top of the Fifth, Gabe Holt on first base, nobody out...play will resume 7/13 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please visit and review: Biloxi and Tennessee Suspended in the Fifth - Game Will Resume Wednesday 4:30pm CST This one was a battle of two solo shots - Biloxi's came from now Double-A HOF candidate, Andruw Monasterio . With Jakson Reetz promoted to Triple-A Nashville, the Shuckers better hope the red hot Monasterio remains with their ball club given Joey Wiemer 's ongoing woes. After tonight's first inning homer (his fourth since his re-assignment), he extended his hit streak to seven games: His batting average is now up to a ripe 0.412 and his OPS well over 1.000 in 51 Double-A AB's. He's a one-man wrecking crew in Biloxi. Briefly, kudos are also in order for TJ Shook who worked around a solo home run himself while surrendering only one more hit and two walks while striking out three batters over four complete innings. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Memphis (Cardinals) 2, Nashville 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, please visit and review: Redbirds Clip Sounds in Series Opener - Sounds Lead Redbirds by 5.5 Games in International League West Division Cardinals' LHP Steven Matz most likely saw his last rehab outing before heading to the big club and he dominated the Sounds bats on a beautiful muggy evening in Nashville. In 4 1/3 complete innings of two-hit, two walk, seven strikeout work, Matz gave way to the Redbirds' bullpen who held on - avoiding any chance at a Sounds comeback when Weston Wilson popped out weakly to first base with the bases juiced and two down in the bottom of the eighth. This game was filled with a lot of strikeouts and a lot of walks for Sounds batters. Ultimately, they couldn't get the big hit when they needed it. Three Key Observations: (1) In a juxtaposition of what it's like to head down to Double-A versus what it's like to head up to Triple-A, we have the parallel and ongoing cases of the above-mentioned Monasterio and the recently Triple-A promoted Jackson Reetz. How about heading up a level and facing a veteran MLB pitcher, Mr. Reetz? How about doing so while playing left field in a new ballpark? Such was the case in his first action for Nashville in 2022. Reetz ultimately finished 0-for-3 with a strikeout, ground out, fly out and took a key full count HBP off his left elbow (ouch!) giving the Sounds a chance to walk in their first run of the evening. All told, this was a decent night of getting his feet wet for the up-and-comer. (2) It was apparent early and often: neither ball club was all too enthused with home plate umpire, Matt Winter. I tend to agree with both ball clubs. The zone was quite mysterious - balls below the knees were strikes and balls. Balls off the outside stripe were balls and strikes. There were simply way too many questionable calls and way too many batters left befuddled and complaining walking back to the dugout. Hopefully, it was just an off night. I can still hear the faint chirping echoing forth from each dugout. (3) We've talked about the Sounds bullpen all year and why change now? After starter RHP Dylan File conceded two runs (the only Redbirds runs of the evening) during a prolonged 26 pitch second inning, he was pulled and the impeccable Sounds bullpen work began. Seven complete shutout innings adds another feather into an already plumage-laden bullpen cap. I'll highlight the bounce back 1 1/3 shutdown two strikeout innings of work from Lucas Erceg and the flawless eighth inning two strikeout work from consistently overlooked RHP Matt Hardy. Hardy doesn't wow you with size or stature but he certainly delivers results and a beautiful mullet. Further hats off to him for getting his first strikeout after Weston Wilson biffed a fly ball just inside the dugout - it's a play Weston should have made and, thankfully, Hardy didn't flinch. That drop was emblematic of Wilson's 0-for-4 two strikeout night. That's a wrap for today's Minor League Report. Keep in mind, the DSL and ACL affiliates will have the day off tomorrow so we will feature the Brewers Low-A through Triple-A clubs. We'll see Stiven Cruz and Israel Puello taking the mound for Carolina and Wisconsin in the morning hours while Nick Bennett and Ethan Small will take the mound in the evening. And, remember, the completion of tonight's Biloxi game will be on a mini double-header docket in Tennessee tomorrow - this will most likely begin with a Biloxi bullpen arm. 4. Just a refresher of the much-needed success at South Bend for Joe Gray Jr: 3HR, 6 RBI, 2 SB, 1.012 OPS He was due. And, he delivered. Good stuff!
  5. Do I trade Tyler Black for a rental of Josh Bell? We’ve got a big man down in Nashville with a heck of a glove, power, and an incredible ability to get on base. ? I know that won’t impress or invigorate a lot of fans, but, I also really love me some Tyler Black. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: He has MLB player written all up in his game. Now, thinking ‘inside the Box’, a trade centered on selling Jakson Reetz back to Washington? Now, that makes me giggle a lil bit.
  6. Of all the thoughts racing through his mind after that glorious Start in April of 2004, I can nearly guarantee you one was not: "I'm going to be a railroad engineer!". Life has such a fascinating way of taking you on a journey - Minor League ball players live this on a near daily basis. Saenz's story is another in a long line of: It's really really hard to make it to the Big Dance. And, it's even harder to make it back. And, it's hardest to stay. Thank you for sharing this one @reillymcshane.
  7. I agree with you on Joey Wiemer, Jim. It's hard to fathom the current ongoing slump and precipitous decline in production at the plate. It's important to note, of course, he's still routinely making plays in the outfield but...I remember when he first returned from the mysterious non-disclosed hand/thumb injury, he crushed a solo HR off prized Marlins' Ace Eury Perez (also in Futures Game) - a line drive rope over the wall in left center. I thought to myself: OK, maybe this brief stint on the shelf was mysterious but he seems to be back. And, well, here we are amidst 3-for-42. When his slump was well underway, I noted in a report: he was pressing at the plate. He took an already aggressive swing and was clearly over-aggressive - as if trying to force his way out of a prolonged stretch of ineffective AB's. I personally don't see any visible issues with his hand/thumb. What I see is a player who has lost confidence, is pressing much too hard, and has frankly lost himself at the dish. Hopefully, he can reclaim that incredible form we saw for essentially near 1.5 years. For now, tho, it would certainly appear he is in the doldrums.
  8. Man, Darrien Miller hit by two pitches and then the foul off the face? Ugh. Talk about adding insult to injury. Booooo!
  9. I think a very good solution for every Brewers fan struggling to make peace with this version of the Brewers and their Brewers offense or, well, just the Brewers in general - and, I do want to be clear: I am not pointing a finger at anyone here or anyone anywhere ? - spend a dedicated period of time watching the Brewers' Double-A 2022 Biloxi Shuckers. They'll sober you right up into a state of gratitude for any semblance of consistency anywhere in any level of baseball. They'll give you a couple moments of 'Up', they'll give you many moments of 'Down', and they'll most likely leave you in a complete state of confoundedness as they seesaw their ways from 6-8 games under 0.500 back to 4-5 games above 0.500 seemingly on the monthly. Every expectation will face challenge. Every facet of play that can sabotage a chance of victory will be performed for a stretch or stretches - occasionally at the same time. There will be slumps, injuries, over-promotions, send downs, thin rosters, six-game series sweeps. The whole gambit. If you can keep your positivity through it all, it is akin to achieving a level of Aikido mastery. And, I think it will bring you back to the Brewers side of things a modern-day Fanatic Zen Master. You will find yourself ready for any devious tendencies or malfeasance in the batters box. Just my two meaningless centavos. Go Brewers!
  10. Great discourse here. I'm enjoying the different perspectives and POV's. It will be very interesting to see what the Brewers decide to do come the deadline. We suddenly have many an intriguing talent to consider in the lower levels and several very intriguing talents developing in the DSL. I always approach this time of year with literally one thought at the forefront of my mind: I'm really grateful it isn't my job to make these all-important decisions. None of this is easy.

With the DSL and ACL men taking their rest day, it was the four Brewers' upper-level affiliates back on the diamond continuing their collective road series. RHP Dylan File was dealing in Columbus, RHP Israel Puello took the hill for Wisconsin and had a fantastic second start at High-A, TJ Shook got shook up by a grand salami turning a lead upside down, and RHP Jeferson Figueroa lost his dominance in the fourth inning. And, the first inning featured many a swing and a miss before three straight groundouts. Sommer dominated the Mudcats' bats over six innings of one-hit two-strikeout work. This game could pretty much be summed up with one line: "Well, Jackson Chourio hit his 10th home run in the ninth inning." The Mudcats more or less were swept off the field tonight and couldn't really muster any viable threat. The win streak ended with a fizzle but it did feature the late Chourio firework. Further Game Notes: The above being said, RHP Jeferson Figueroa was cruising through three innings - nine up and nine down with four punch outs. The game simply got away a bit in the fourth on two consecutive run scoring doubles with two down. The score was suddenly 3-0 and the Mudcats wouldn't recover. The Cannon Ballers tacked on two solo shots in the fifth and that was the end of Jeferson's evening. What do I mean by 'swept off the field' above? Two chances with RISP on the evening for the Mudcats? That's going to be tough to pull out a victory any evening. In a night where the bottom of the order collectively went 0-for-12 with three strikeouts (six through nine spots), there was Chourio's fine evening to celebrate. He finished 2-for-4 with a solo shot, he knocked two of the three Mudcats hits, and added his ninth stolen base of the year for good measure. That's really all there is to this one. It's on to the next. The Mudcats have been playing quite well of late - they simply ran into a very hot pitcher, on the road. His 11-game streak is the Rattlers' longest of the season and, honestly, it feels much-deserved. Zavier's numbers aren't where he'd like them to be but as a regular watcher of T-Rats games I feel it's quite easy to say: it isn't for lack of good at bats. Zavier has a very polished professional repeatable swing. He has a solid athletic frame. And, frankly, he's just a very savvy and solid baseball player - as corny as that sounds. He brings a sense of calm and comfort on the diamond and I can only imagine his coaches and teammates value that immensely. On the mound, RHP Israel Puello certainly didn't get a soft landing in his promotion to High-A. How about a debut at Home versus the League-leading Cedar Rapids Kernels? Check. How about game number two versus the third place overall and second place team (second half) South Bend Cubs? Check. How'd Puello fare? Let's take a look at Warren and Israel and their teammates in the game recap notes below. Further Game Notes: The T-Rats got things going deep in the first and just as quickly as the two-out rally started on the Joe Gray Jr. walk and Tristan Peters double (his 14th), it ended. Gray was gunned down at home on a fine relay from center field, to shortstop, and accurately to home. How did Warren's 11-game hit streak proceed? It ended. He finished his evening with a straight 0-for-4 performance. How did Puello fare? Fantastically! How does seven complete innings, 90 pitches, 3 hits, 1 walk, 4 k's, and the sole blemish a solo HR sound? He gave his team every shot to pull out the 'W'. Through two High-A starts, he's looking quite ready to build on these successes. We see your 0-for-2 with RISP, Carolina. AND, we'll double the stakes and offer up an 0-for-4 with RISP in South Bend. Just, frankly, not a lot happening on the base paths on the evening. The Cubs' recently promoted Luis Devers (Myrtle Beach, Low-A) took his first action of his High-A career out of the bullpen. He performed excellently over three innings pitched: 2 hits, 0 BB's, and 3 K's. I took notice of Devers when the Mudcats had their series versus the Pelicans earlier in the 2022 season. He was dominant in Low-A with an incredible 75 k's to a mere 14 walks. He'll be one to monitor in South Bend as he continued to show out tonight. *** Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Montgomery (Rays) 8, Biloxi 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please visit and review: Early Lead Evaporates in Shuckers Defeat - Robinson Tosses Scoreless Inning in First Appearance for Biloxi in 2022 I am a fragile Shuckers fan these days. I have watched so many wild n' wooly happenings in the Biloxi season, I feel I may need a Double-A therapist (I'm only mostly kidding!). Tonight, I was eagerly awaiting the return of OF Sal Frelick and INF Gabe Holt. A joyous welcome for two men offering depth and bats to a lineup that has been running very very thin. Coming off TJ Shook 's best work of the year his last outing - albeit, in a relief role - there was hope the young pitcher could find some of that earlier High-A dominance. So, how did it all turn out? Sadly, and predictably, in Montgomery...even after grabbing a 4-0 lead in the first inning: Further Game Notes: Welcome back to the starting line-up Sal Frelick. Thank you, thank you, thank you! How about a lead-off single and a run scored? That'll do, young man. I'm sure Noah Campbell is looking forward to more RBI opportunities. Here's the proof: How about another double for Jakson Reetz ? What a season. He got things going early in the first inning with an improbable and extremely difficult two-run rip. He's just so strong. I have no idea how he pulled this pitch all the way to the wall: Oh, you say Holt has returned as well? Wonderful news. Let's get healthy! Niko Hulsizer 's third Grand Slam versus the Shuckers in his career as a Biscuit?!? Ummmm, that's not flaky and tasty at all. He's starting to enter the same territory as Griffin Conine - aka, Shuckers slayer. TJ, I'm going to guess you'll want this pitch back: Closing the grand slam loop: a hit batter and two walks led to that grand slam opportunity. Free passes and errors will often come back to bite you - that smash right there is living proof. Joey Wiemer is officially really in a slump. And, lemme tell ya, the memes and the gifs apparently aren't helping in the near-term: Deep thoughts: What can we do as concerned citizens in a universe where we see the superhero abilities in Wiemer's golden bat and God-like flowing golden locks? I don't know. Life is just a fraction of a bit easier when he is hitting .300 ball and ripping homers and doubles all over the ballpark. He's facing his stiffest Minor League test to date but I have no doubts he'll put in the hard work to turn things around. Take solace, Joey, I play MLB the Show 2022 and I can affirm: hitting a baseball is hard. ? Wiemer ended another frustrating night 0-for-5 and finished it with a strikeout. Keep grinding, young man! Show them how it's done, Cam Robinson ! A breath of extremely fresh air entered the Montgomery Biscuit's stadium when Robinson took the mound for Biloxi for the first time. What's more, he took out a little frustration and added a little gas for his teammates: a pitch one rocket bean ball right off the Biscuit's batter. Zesty! Fear not, as I have been attesting for over a month: Cam is the stuff. He struck out the next two and got a fly out to Frelick in center field to end the frame. A good first run. A fine mix of heat, off-speed (slider and curve), and pace with purpose. It was a refreshing thing to watch as was his five of six retired by strikeout. Whew, Dylan! He hardly made a grimace. It was grab the ball. Game face. And let it rip. He gave the Sounds everything he had over seven complete innings - 4 hits, 3 walks, 8 K's, 3 earned runs. The runs came late with the game well in hand. The Sounds put up a Pablo Reyes solo shot, a Tyler White two-run bomb, and a fielder's choice scoring Jon Singleton off the bat of Brent Diaz to plate four runs through two innings. Fun stat from 2022: White has successfully stolen four of five bases ? Color me pleasantly shocked. Give the man some respect, good Sir! Clearly, he is a much better athlete than I think/thought. Tyler, I apologize for underestimating your prowess. I'm going to call the fly-out to start the bottom of the third inning an 'adventure'. It was a sky-high hanger and all three-of Reyes (from short), Abraham Almonte in left field, and Brice Turang in center field ran circuitously and unconfidently toward it. Ultimately, Reyes (who had stopped briefly en route) was the one to track it down and made an incredibly difficult catch almost humorously easy. It's hard to say what happened there but I would gather a more traditional center fielder ranges and grabs that ball? The first blemish File showed in a dominant performance was a four-pitch walk with one down in the bottom of the fourth. However, that blemish lasted all of one pitch as the next batter hit a chopper directly to Big Jon at first base who in one motion stepped on the bag and tossed the ball to second base where Reyes easily dropped the tag. When I say File was pitching with pace, I mean he was throwing from the mound with 10-11 seconds on the pitch clock. Incredible stuff. Singleton started his game like he has many times this season: opening walk, strikeout, 0-2 count turned into a second walk. His ability to take pitches is uncanny given the amount he strikes out and the power he possesses. If you want to strike him out, you are going to have to attack the zone. He just rarely chases a pitch out of the zone. With those two walks, he took the International League lead with 64 on the season. I don't know if I've ever seen a scene on a baseball diamond whereby a surprising throw by the cut-off man caught three umpires off guard. It certainly happened in the top of the sixth as Garrett Whitley slid into third base and was left with his hands up as not a single ump made the call for what felt like 5-10 seconds. It was quite confusing. The tag was applied on the left field side of Garrett so it only made sense, given the uncertainty, the home plate umpire ultimately made the call?. Manager Rick Sweet quickly came to the field in disbelief and controlled consternation. Bless his heart. All told, the Sounds added three in the mini-rally and it was 8-0. I'll tell you what first place baseball looks like: picking your teammates up and avoiding disastrous innings. With one down in the bottom-half of the sixth, Reyes botched an absolute routine grounder off the bat of former Brewer farmhand, David Fry . From there, the Clippers managed their first threat of the game with a single to right field, and a walk. The bases were juiced. With a 1-2 count, the Clippers batter hit a liner to right field. David Dahl charged and threw in quick succession. Brent Diaz met the throw a mere couple feet in front of home base and deftly applied the tag to Fry who couldn't beat the well-placed toss or slide under the savvy tag. It was a first-place play. And that's my coach-speak cliché of the week! Almonte left the ball game after a single at bat and was replaced by Whitley in left field. Let's hope this isn't another return to the IL. He was hitting the ball with gusto upon his return - as he has done all season. He provides so much pop and danger from both sides of the dish. We hope to see you back pronto, Abraham! Welcome back to the Nashville staff, Kelley! A fine inning of work in his first action since returning - he even lowered his Nashville ERA to 0.64 on the 2022 season. All told, the Sounds were the beneficiaries of four double plays turned - that tied a season high for them. They are just a savvy, savvy veteran Triple-A ball club up and down. Rarely do they make a mistake - when the opportunities present themselves, they flash the leather on a daily basis. If you can, please give them a watch as often as you can. *** That is the end of my Minor League Link Report work this week. It has been an honor providing coverage for you all these past few days. Joe was gunned down at home on a fine relay from center field, to shortstop, and accurately to home. How did Zavier's 11-game hit streak proceed? It ended. He finished his evening with a straight 0-for-4 performance. How did Israel fare? *** Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi , Montgomery (Rays) Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please visit and review: Early Lead Evaporates in Shuckers Defeat - Robinson Tosses Scoreless Inning in First Appearance for Biloxi in 2022 I am a fragile Shuckers fan these days. Coming off TJ Shook's best work of the year his last outing - albeit, in a relief role - there was hope the young pitcher could find some of that earlier High-A dominance. So, how did it all turn out? Sadly, and predictably, in Montgomery...even after grabbing a 4-0 lead in the first inning : Further Game Notes: Welcome back to the starting line-up Sal Frelick. Thank you, thank you, thank you! How about a lead-off single and a run scored? That'll do, young man. I'm sure Noah Campbell is looking forward to more rbi opportunities. Here's the proof: How about another double for Jakson Reetz? What a season. He got things going early in the first inning with an improbable and extremely difficult two-run rip. He's just so strong. I have no idea how he pulled this pitch all the way to the wall: Oh, you say INF Gabe Holt has returned as well? Wonderful news. Let's get healthy! Niko Hulsizer's third Grand Slam versus the Shuckers in his career as a Biscuit?!? Ummmm, that's not flaky and tasty at all. He's starting to enter the same territory as Griffin Conine - aka, Shuckers slayer. TJ, I'm going to guess you'll want this pitch back: Closing the grand slam loop: a hit batter and two walks led to that grand slam opportunity. Free passes and errors will often come back to bite you - that smash right there is living proof. Joey Wiemer is officially really in a slump. And, lemme tell ya, the memes and the gifs apparently aren't helping in the near-term: Deep thoughts: What can we do as concerned citizens in a universe where we see the superhero abilities in Joey's golden bat and god-like flowing golden locks? I don't know. Life is just a fraction of a bit easier when Joey is hitting 0.300 ball and ripping homers and doubles all over the ballpark. He's facing his stiffest Minor League test to date but I have no doubts he'll put in the hard work to turn things around. Take solace, Joey, I play MLB the Show 2022 and I can affirm: hitting a baseball is hard. ? Joey ended another frustrating night 0-for-5 and finished it with a strikeout. Keep grinding, young man! Show them how it's done, Cam Robinson! A breath of extremely fresh air entered the Montgomery Biscuit's stadium when Cam took the mound for Biloxi for the first time. Here's to more meaningful action in the innings ahead - the Shuckers will need it. *** Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville , Columbus (Guardians) Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, please visit and review: Sounds Rout Columbus for Fifth Straight Win - Dylan File Strikes Out Eight, Nashville Mashes 12 Hits to Run Away from Clippers Game Viewing Notes: RHP Dylan File was dealing early. Fun stat from 2022: Tyler White has successfully stolen four of five bases ? Color me pleasantly shocked. Give the man some respect, good Sir! Clearly, Tyler is a much better athlete than I think/thought. Tyler, I apologize for underestimating your prowess. I'm going to call the fly-out to start the bottom of the third inning an 'adventure'. It was a sky-high hanger and all three-of Pablo Reyes (from short), Abraham Almonte in left field, and Brice Turang in center field ran circuitously and unconfidently toward it. Ultimately, Pablo (who had stopped briefly en route) was the one to track it down and made an incredibly difficult catch almost humorously easy. It's hard to say what happened there but I would gather a more traditional center fielder ranges and grabs that ball? The first blemish Dylan File showed in a dominant performance was a four pitch walk with one down in the bottom of the fourth. However, that blemish lasted all of one pitch as the next batter hit a chopper directly to Big Jon at first base who in one motion stepped on the bag and tossed the ball to second base where Pablo Reyes easily dropped the tag. When I say Dylan File was pitching with pace, I mean he was throwing from the mound with 10-11 seconds on the pitch clock. Incredible stuff. Jon Singleton started his game like he has many times this season: opening walk, strikeout, 0-2 count turned into a second walk. With one down in the bottom-half of the sixth, Pablo Reyes botched an absolute routine grounder off the bat of former Brewer farmhand, David Fry. From there, the Clippers managed their first threat of the game with a single to right field, and a walk. The bases were juiced. With a 1-2 count, the Clippers batter hit a liner to right field. David Dahl charged and threw in quick succession. Brent Diaz met the throw a mere couple feet in front of home base and deftly applied the tag to Fry who couldn't beat the well placed toss or slide under the savvy tag. It was a first place play. And, that's my coach-speak cliché of the week! Abraham Almonte left the ball game after a single at bat and was replaced by Garrett Whitley in left field. Let's hope this isn't another return to the IL. He was hitting the ball with gusto upon his return - as he has done all season. He provides so much pop and danger from both sides of the dish. We hope to see you back pronto, Abraham! Welcome back to the Nashville staff, Trevor Kelley! A fine inning of work in his first action since returning - he even lowered his Nashville ERA to 0.64 on the 2022 season. All told, the Sounds were the beneficiaries of four double plays turned - that tied a season high for them. They are just a savvy savvy veteran Triple-A ball club up and down. Rarely do they make a mistake - when the opportunities present themselves they flash the leather on a daily basis. If you can, please give them a watch as often as you can. *** That is the end of my Minor League Link Report work this week. It has been an honor providing coverage for you all these past few days. 15. With all our beloved higher-level affiliates taking a hard-earned day of rest, we focus on the DSL Brewers clubs and the ACL Brewers clubs. Four games were played in total. Many an intriguing player storyline is developing in Arizona and the Dominican Republic. Let's dive into those Box Scores and Game Logs and deliver the goods! As always, please feel free to comment; offer your thoughts; and join us in the ongoing daily game threads. We're all here to celebrate these young players and watch them grow. Transactions: None *** Before I go straight into the baseball action, let us celebrate recent accolades and performances of note. As always, and with great gratitude, these come via the consistently mentioned (in our reports) 'Brewers Player Development' twitter. Let's start with a high draft pick riser and a pitcher we've discussed quite often recently as he is trending UP: LHP Russ Smith . His last two starts have been far and away his best of the season. It's certainly cause for celebration: And, let's follow that up with recently announced pitching and hitting Brewers organizational monthly awards. With the pitching, we go straight back to the High-A pitching hot bed of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Taking awards are (former) teammates and (former) housemates RHP's Cam Robinson and Justin Jarvis (We shared this earlier this season BUT now that Cam is in Biloxi it's worth a nostalgic look). Fantastic stuff, gentlemen! And, on the hitting side of things, we've discussed the ongoing red hot streak of extremely formidable and exciting young catching prospect Jeferson Quero for awhile now. He takes home the monthly hitting award along with extremely intriguing 18 year old Dominican ACL Brewers Gold OF prospect, Luis Castillo. Luis has had an absolutely incredible start to his ACL season and has most definitely caught our attention. We clearly have two very intriguing young lefty-bats coming up the ranks in outfielders Castillo and Luis Lara . It's a shame we don't have an affiliate in L(o)uisville : DSL Brewers 1 5, DSL Cubs Blue 3 Box Score/Game Log In a game where the DSL Brewers 1 lead throughout - with single runs in both the first and second innings forming a 2-0 lead - there were three storylines that stood out: the continued offensive outputs of Lara and Jhonny Severino and the continued excellent pitching form of Osbriel Mogollon . All three players have been notable for some time and today was no different. Let's start with the young and tantalizing Lara. Outfield prospect Lara continues to dominate in the lead-off role for the DSL Brewers 1. Today was more of the same as he hit to the tune of 3-for-4 with his eighth double and his fourth triple (!!). About the only real negative we can glean from his game logs is he has been caught stealing four times while successfully swiping only two bases in the 21 games played this summer. In Luis' 81 total AB's in the early going, however, he is making many waves: 0.366 BA/ 0.407 OBP/ 1.005 OPS/ 17 runs/ 30 hits/ 1 HR/ 13 rbi/ 8 doubles/ 4 triples/ 5 bb/ 14 k's. There is so much to like here. He's a true lead-off hitting prospect and is flat out dealing. Dominican Jhonny Severino, in the designated hitter spot in the lineup and batting just behind the red hot Lara in the two-hole, also went 3-for-4 for the game. He hit his sixth double and knocked in his 13th rbi (it's nice batting behind the young Lara!). On the season, Severino is now hitting to the tune of a 0.309 BA himself with a 0.385 OBP and a 0.856 OPS with 23 k's to 7 walks. He has also successfully stolen all five of his attempts. This production is obviously quite nice, but, what I notice most beyond these appealing numbers and outputs is: 17 years of age, 6'3" 185 pounds. That's a considerable frame for the young man. For example, highly touted Mudcats shortstop Eduardo Garcia is listed an inch shorter and 25 pounds lighter. Make of that what you will. I'll say: he's definitively on my radar. It seems like just yesterday: Also of Note: 18-year-old 1B/3B/DH (to date - as you'll find with many of the young DSL players they play all over and often don't even play their listed position ? LOTS to track and, hey, young players evolve!) switch-hitting Dominican Arnys Rodriguez continues to deserve mention. Hitting in the fifth spot in the batting order, and once again playing first base (he has played primarily first base with 13 total games at the position), he managed to knock in a run (his 10th rbi of the young season); plate a run himself; and take a free base in a 1-for-3 day at the plate. Rodriguez now sports a 0.293 BA/ 0.455 OBP/ 0.894 OPS. Perhaps the most interesting stat is a 1:1 K:BB ratio at 13 apiece. This is very noteworthy. We have a switch-hitting 1B/3B/DH young man with a 1:1 K:BB ratio showing out early - a mere 41 AB's, mind you. I'll be paying attention. You may or may not recall, but Rodriguez was signed in the same class as Hedbert Perez, Jeferson Quero, and Jheremy Vargas back in the summer of 2019. It's always fascinating to witness and follow their journeys from afar. Back to the pitching side of things, let's go for a little deep dive into young Venezuelan lefty hurler Osbriel Mogollon. Mogollon is a young 18 years old having just celebrated his new year in early April. The sample size is extremely small - five games, three starts, 15 innings pitched - but what in the heck do we do this for anyway? To calm our enthusiasms?! No way. Not on this Minor League bard's watch. Signed for a mere $10,000 from the International Bonus Pool money pot, I'd say this is the current 'best value' proposition of the entire 2022 group. As our very own @CheeseheadInQC has opined (see HERE), there are other value candidates but the point stands: very good results early. After today's five complete innings pitched (0 hits, 1 BB, 8 K's), he is showing an overall stat line of: 15 IP, 25 K's, 9 BB's, 1.20 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, 2 HB. He's staying relatively clean and in just his third start he went his longest with the least amount of damage. Trending. Improving. Exciting us all. DSL Brewers #2 4, DSL Cubs Red 3 Box Score/Game Log Following the delayed live feed early, it felt like a game that could easily have gotten away. The Cubs Red had scored single runs in each of the first three innings. Trailing 3-0, then, in the bottom half of the fourth, the Brewers 2 grabbed some opportune luck on behalf of the Cubs sloppiness and took advantage - all four runs were scored unearned. It started with a one-out throwing error giving the Brewers 2 a free runner. The next batter, red hot Brayan Oropeza , was bean balled. Suddenly, there were two runners aboard. Toss in a wild pitch on the very next toss and, well, now runners had reached second and third. Edgardo Reyes grounded out to third scoring Francisco Nina from third. The score was 1-3, with two outs, and Oropeza standing on second base. How about a passed ball to throw atop the wild pitch appetizer? Oropeza took third base. Still two down. On the 1-0 count Mendy Ferreira ripped a line drive double (his second of the year) to center field moving the deficit to 2-3. How about another wild pitch? Ferreira was suddenly on third. With Demetrio Nadal at the dish, and the 1-0 count, he hit an infield single to the third base side and, lo and behold, advanced due to the second throwing error for the Cubs Red. With the score 3-3, and the Cubs Red mercifully changing pitchers for the next at bat, Donis Rodriguez ripped a line drive single to left field and the Brewers took their lead 4-3 (and the victory) before flying out to end the inning. This being said, a team must still take advantage of the opportunities like a 3-for-6 performance with RISP. Not a lot of opportunities whatsoever but incredible production with limited chance. Continuing the theme of highlighting three noteworthy players, let's look to performances from outfielder Ferreira and RHP's Nelson Cuevas and Stanley Encarnacion: Ferreira had an inauspicious 2021 season in the DSL and, honestly, the 19-year-old Dominican hasn't gotten off to a noticeable start. BUT, in a game filled with four unearned runs and a mere five DSL Brewers 2 hits, he had two of them in a 2-for-3 afternoon. He hit his second double and knocked across his eighth rbi (with two outs, no less). Hopefully, he can build on a game like this. This is the third straight year for the 21-year-old Cuevas in the Brewers DSL system. His overall numbers speak to a kind of 'with familiarity breeds comfort' type of situation. But, honestly, what do I know? His strike % is up, his pitches per AB are down, and he now has three saves (after today). These are all great things. If we're being totally honest, however, not a lot jumps off the page. We celebrate him today, regardless, as he grabbed his third save with an unblemished seventh inning securing the improbably victory. That alone is worth recognition, and we absolutely hope he builds greater things from here. There's a little more to look at when we look to Encarnacion. He's a year younger than Nelson and we see considerable improvement across his three seasons in the system. To date, in 2022, we see a 13k:3bb ratio over 9 2/3 innings of relief work (8 hits, 1 HB). Batters are hitting a pedestrian 0.222 against him and his WHIP is a respectable 1.14. All of these are improvements over 2021. He gave the Brewers 2 2.0 scoreless innings of 2 walk and 2 strikeout ball today. I'll be tracking in the days ahead. Tracking the DSL Brewers Divisional Standing at Present: ACL Brewers Gold 7, ACL Athletics 6 Box Score/Game Log In a wild n' wooly late game that included nine runs in the final inning, the Brewers Gold managed to score the last five. It was tied at two after six and it seemed like a pitching battle was in store and the runs would be hard to come by. Not so fast! Trailing 2-0 in that bottom half of the sixth inning, it was a Jesus Parra 's two-out, two-run, game-tying home run (his second of the year) that scored DH Gregory Barrios who had singled earlier with one down. Parra had two RBI's on the evening when all was said and done. Trailing by four runs in the seventh - after 20-year-old RHP Phili Silverio hit a batter, gave up a two-run single, and then a solo home run and ultimately was replaced by RHP Trevor Tietz who gave up a solo shot to his first batter...gulp - the Brewers Gold looked to start a rally. With one down, it was a classic situation where the moment seemed to get away from the Athletics pitchers. The rally included a couple singles, a couple walks, a balk for good measure, and then a game-winning single off the bat of 3B Branlyn Jaraba (3-for-4, first double, game-winning rbi). Special mention will go to the combined work of 19-year-old Venezuelan RHP Yorman Galindez (4 2/3 IP, 5 hits, 2 BB, 1 earned run, 6 K's) and 20-year-old Columbian RHP Fray Morelo (1/3 IP, 1 K). Fray came on after Yorman had walked two men on and shut that threat down with a three-pitch mow him down strikeout. Offensively, the reigning offensive player of the month, Castillo, had a fairly noteworthy 0-for-2 line with two walks and an RBI. The aforementioned Jaraba and his 3-for-4 outing are noteworthy. And 19-year-old Venezuelan 2B Jose Caballero is catching the eye with his 7:7 BB:K ratio and 4-for-4 stolen bases - he went 2-for-3 with a run tonight as well. ACL Reds 9, ACL Brewers Blue 5 Box Score/Game Log The ACL Reds came into this contest atop the standings and they won another to stay in ACL pole position at 16-6 overall. The ACL Brewers Blue gave it a good effort and, ultimately, finished even in the hit department - nine hits apiece. This was a contest, but the Reds led throughout as they struck early with a three-spot. The Brewers Blue simply couldn't recover. At first glance, one would surmise the Reds' six stolen bases had something to say in the final score as neither team was particularly effective with RISP: Brewers Blue 4-for-14/Reds 6-for-19. Given the six Reds stolen bases, a fielding and throwing error, one might gather young 18-year-old catcher Darlin Lora had a rough game. This is simply a guess, however - there is no MiLB.TV review so we'll have to see what happens over time. Sticking to the Brewers Blue side of things, there was clear productivity up and down the line-up: That's an impactful evening at the dish as there is production 1-through-7 in that line-up. They simply lacked the one or two opportune knocks to take the lead. Moving to the pitching side of things, we'll note 19-year-old and 6'6" two-way playing (RHP) Quinton Low and his continued effectiveness on the mound (1 IP, 1 BB, 1 K, still 0.00 era) and 19-year-old Venezuelan RHP Jose Chavez ' scoreless inning of work (1 IP, 1K, 0 hits, 0 BB). Here's hoping for better overall results next time out. Keep grinding and the improvements and results will come. Finally, a quick glance at the ACL Standings: Keep in mind, as noted by our own @sveumrules and @CheeseheadInQC (HERE - Bottom of page) the ACL Brewers appear to have the youngest team in the entire Complex League. Given this, and given several fantastic seasons happening across both squads, it is fairly easy to see there is plenty of talent amongst the teams. The season is still young, mind you, and either team could still go on a run. *** At publish time, we know we have RHP Israel Puello looking to build on a fantastic High-A debut in South Bend and RHP Dylan File looking to regain steadier form for the Nashville Sounds at Columbus for Game 2 versus the Cleveland Guardians' second place affiliate. The remaining match-ups are to be determined so stay tuned as the day progresses - all games will take place in the evening. 16. 17. More dominant pitching from the DSL Brewers 2 staff while both ACL Brewers teams lose. Nashville headed on the road to begin a key series at second place Columbus, Wisconsin headed to South Bend for a battle of second-half 8-1 leaders (2nd and 3rd overall, respectively, in the Midwest League), Carolina tried to keep their winning ways going in Kannapolis, and Biloxi attempted to atone for their early-May 0-6 mark in Montgomery. It was a holiday start to road series abound in the higher levels. Let's get into it! Transactions: RHP Justin Bullock was assigned to the High-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers from the Double-A Biloxi Shuckers The Shuckers officially activated RHP Cam Robinson Biloxi also activated RHP Arnaldo Hernandez off the 7-Day IL *** DSL Brewers #1 5, DSL Phillies Red 3 Box Score/Game Log I'm starting to get used to looking at dominant Box Scores from 19 year old Venezuelan RHP Kevin Briceno. Today was certainly no different. Because our coverage is limited and information so sparse on these tantalizing young DSL prospects, I'll refresh your memory with a tweet shared by the beloved 'Brewers Player Development' twitter team on June 30th: Today was more of the same dominant stuff for the young hurler: 6 2/3 ip, 1 hit, 2 walks, 6 k's. Given his 2021 stint started with a 60 Day IL stint, and his 2021 outings thereafter were limited to shortened two/three inning (only two starts) stretches, it would seem (entirely my speculation, mind you) the goal for the organization is to stretch Kevin out for future work as a starter stateside. He has started all six games to date in 2022 - his inaugural four inning opener the least amount of innings pitched - and today was his longest outing of the year. Here's to even brighter bright days ahead! Keep your eyes on those box scores. DSL Brewers 1 relief pitcher Jesael Cabrera was coasting for 2 1/3 inning before things began unraveling a bit in the ninth. With the Brewers comfortably ahead 5-0, Jesael loaded the bases with a walk; double; and a second walk after a fly out opened the frame. This being said, it would appear a missed catch error by second baseman Jose Pena extended the Phillies frame. After another fly out, and with two down, Jesael gave up a double to right field. The game ended there, however. The game log reads as a bang-bang relay play from right fielder Duncan Garcia to shortstop Gery Holguin to home plate where catcher Edgardo Ordonez applied the tag for the third out. Whewwww! That was close. All three early Brewers runs crossed via error, balk, and wild pitch. Though, for good measure, Richard Rojas and Luis Lara did plate runs via doubles - their second and seventh doubles, respectively. The young Brewers 1 now move to 7-13 on the year. DSL Brewers #2 6, DSL White Sox 4 Box Score/Game Log Let's hop to the offensive side for the DSL Brewers 2 and highlight the emerging play of young 18 year old Venezuelan INF/OF prospect, Yeison Perez. Yeison had been out of action (non-disclosed) since June 23rd. So, one could expect a possible drop off from his early offensive output. This was not the case, however. In now 44 AB's, Yeison has hit 6 HR (his sixth, a solo shot, hit today in a 2-for-4 game) and is hitting to the tune of 0.409 with an OPS of 1.424. Toss in five doubles, a triple, and 15 rbi's for good measure. That's after missing two weeks of games, folks. I don't know about you, but, this is quite deserving of early attention. It would certainly appear, early at least, Yeison has grown-up a bit since his first year playing for the DSL Brewers 2 where he played primarily left field with some work at first base and in the DH spot. To date, he's played primarily 1B (six games) and filled the DH spot - with a couple of games working in the outfield. Further shoutouts to: 18 year old Venezuelan C/1B/DH Eric Martinez - with his second home run today, his OPS is now up to 0.835. One would surmise, much like Jon Singleton in Triple-A, if he could get that batting average up his numbers might really fly off the page (Eric's current BA is sitting at 0.220 in a mere 41 AB's) 17 year old Dominican INF (SS and 3B primarily at present) Juan Baez. With his 2-for-3 outing today, including his fourth double, Juan's average is up to a robust 0.329 with an 0.814 OPS in 82 AB's. Interestingly, he appears to be working on his stolen base game: 6-for-10 on the year. He did commit his 6th error today - all have occurred manning shortstop. 20 year old Dominican RHP Waldin Rodriguez picked up his second save in as many opportunities with a scoreless ninth inning of work - two infield pop outs and a groundout. He has pitched effectively in 7 1/3 innings of relief work over 7 DSL Brewers 2 games. All told, the DSL Brewers 2 are now back to 0.500 ball at 11-11 overall. Let's hope they can get some more wins and break above 0.500 in the days ahead! ACL Giants Orange 11, ACL Brewers Gold 8 Box Score/Game Log It was a true back-and-forth affair today for the Brewers Gold and, unfortunately, they were on the wrong side of the final score. After falling behind 3-0 in the second inning, the Brewers Gold managed to plate three runs themselves in the same bottom half - a solo home run from Carlos Roa (his first) and a two-run single from up-and-comer Jadher Areinamo. The Gold briefly took the lead 4-3 on a Blayberg Diaz ground out and fielder's choice but the back-and-forth contest continued as the Giants tied it on a sac fly and scored another go-ahead run on a single to right field and consequent missed catch error from catcher Blayberg Diaz - right fielder Luis Castillo was credited with the outfield assist, regardless. Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth, the Brewers Gold managed to retake the lead on a two run-scoring Gregory Barrios single and a run scoring Luis Castillo double - whose impactful game clearly continued. It was suddenly 7-5 Brewers. Kaylen Nicasia then hit his second home run to of his ACL season in the bottom of the fifth and the Brewers were further ahead 8-5. However, this lead was cut to 8-7 on two two-out doubles and a single off of 20 year old RHP Yerlin Rodriguez. Still leading 8-7 in the final seventh frame, lefty Fraudy Maldonado - who had gone three consecutive scoreless outings - came undone to the tune of two opening walks, two left-field singles and a sacrifice fly. It was 11-8. The attempt at a bases loaded one-out mini-rally was cut short when the Giants brought in 21 year old reliever, Yoniel Ramirez, who promptly struck out Areinamo and Barrios on six consecutive pitches. A heck of a shutdown by Ramirez. It simply wasn't to be in what seemed an exciting seesaw baseball game. The Brewers Gold did outhit the Giants 12-9 - led by Areinamo's 3-for-5 outing (0.312 BA and 0.840 OPS 9:13 BB:k). The Gold fall to 10-11 overall on the season. ACL Royals 7, ACL Brewers Blue 5 Box Score/Game Log Let's refresh your memories of RHP Alexander Valecillo's most recent two starts via the aforementioned Brewers Player Development twitter: Unfortunately, unlike Briceno's continued dominance, Vallecillo struggled a bit today in a shortened outing: 2 2/3 innings, 3 earned runs, 4 hits, 2 walks, 1 HR, 3 k's. He was actually cruising through two innings and started the third with two straight punch outs. But, after a solo home run given up on a 3-1 count, and with two down, things appeared to have broken down a bit. After a first pitch run-scoring single with men on the corners, Alexander was visited on the mound and replaced by 19 year old lefty, Junior Castillo. Let's hope it was just a hiccup and nothing physical-related. All told, the Brewers Blue made a game of this late as they fell behind 7-0 by the end of the fifth inning. The Blue plated two runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth, however, after a Jonatan Guzman single to lead the ninth the Blue ultimately fell in order - a strike out, force out, and fly out to end the game. Performances of Note: DH Alexander Perez went 1-for-5 but did manage a two-run homer in the eighth - his first of the season. Shortstop Ney Serrano went 3-for-4 with two runs. He did commit his sixth error (throwing), however. 20 yo Venezuelan RHP Michael Perdomo managed 3 1/3 very effective scoreless innings late - two hits, one walk, three punch outs. *** Carolina Pre-Game Notes Final: Carolina 4, Kannapolis (White Sox) 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats' site, game details, please visit and review: Sibrian Homers as Mudcats Win Fifth Straight 4-3 - The Mudcats Scored Four Runs in the First, Including Three on Jose Sibrian's First Homer of the Season In a recent game thread we discussed improvements we'd like to see from some of our highest ranked prospects. Nobody in the system trends higher and faster than beloved and tantalizing prospect, Jackson Chourio. As we tend to scrutinize and discuss with several of the Brewers' young bats, we talked of strikeouts and walks - ratios perhaps out of balance etc. Whereas Hendry Mendez is thriving in a lead-off role and carries a fantastic walk:strikeout ratio, Jackson has been trending more that route of 30% and higher k rate. In the modern game these strikeouts aren't frowned upon as in previous decades but it is definitely something a younger prospect can work on improving. It was much to my satisfaction, then, when Chourio led-off his first inning with a walk. He promptly scored on a single to center field off the bat of suddenly red hot Jeferson Quero (was hitting 0.270 after the knock). Then, with the lead 1-0, Jose Sibrian managed to blast his first home run of his season over the wall in left field scoring three more runs. It was suddenly 4-0 Mudcats. The point is: those free passes matter in many different ways - just ask Wes Clarke, Thomas Dillard, and Jon Singleton. Here's hoping for many many more walks ahead for Jackson! What's more, Chourio grabbed his second free-pass later in the contest. All told, on the evening 1k:2bb for the young Chourio. Further Game Notes: Speaking of the Sibrian homerun blast, let's take a look: RHP Alexander Cornielle had another mixed-outing. As he matures and develops, he's simply going to need to fine-tune his control. Another five walks on the evening to pair with four hits added too much danger on the base paths. On the season he now has 43 walks to his 78 punch outs and it's a major reason why his WHIP is elevated to a 1.53 mark - in the 62 2/3 innings pitched he's only given up 53 hits to the tune of a 0.229 BAA. He did grab the win and improved to 4-7 on the season. Lots to build with and plenty of room to grow. Clinging to a 4-2 lead the Mudcats brought the great unknown of RHP Jakob Brustoski to start the bottom half of the sixth. On this evening, we watched the wild and inaccurate version: walk, walk, walk, walk, strikeout, pitching change. Jakob has been the very definition of hot/cold, hit/miss, (insert erratic cliché here). He handed the ball to recently re-assigned RHP Miguel Guerrero with the bases juiced, one out, and the game 4-3 Mudcats. Not an ideal scenario when you're looking to protect and then pad a lead. Major major kudos are in order for Miguel. He came on and shut it down. A strikeout on three pitches to start it off. A pop-up to third base finish the bases loaded threat. Excellent stuff considering his recent re-assignment and a bases loaded one out debut! Overall, in his first outing back with the Mudcats he was the calming force that kept the game in check before handing it over to intriguing (if somewhat inconsistent) RHP Karlos Morales who shut it down in the ninth. Miguel managed 2 2/3 innings of one hit, zero walks, four strikeout ball. He seems to bring his best stuff against the Midwest League's finest and, simply put, tonight was definitely more of the same. With the Brewers coming off a walk-off win versus the Cubs, it seemed as though a convincing victory in South Bend would be the cherry on top. Justin certainly did his best to help this cause: 7 innings pitched, 6 hits, 1 walk, 1 earned run, 11 K's. Whew. Can you say: "Ace in the Making"? After a rough start to his season in April, Justin has been really really good. If you take away that same April (four starts), he has double digit strikeouts in four of his last 11 outings and of those remaining seven games he has nine strikeouts in two of them. That's incredible production. He has quickly taken over that coveted Ace status since TJ Shook, Brandon Knarr, and, now, Cam Robinson have headed South to Double-A. Here's hoping for more of the same for this up-and-coming hurler in his remaining starts of 2022. The remaining games against South Bend most likely won't be this lopsided but Justin set the tone for the remaining T-Rats' starters. Further Game Notes: He didn't man the backstop or even play in this game (?), but let's retroactively celebrate Darrien Miller's recent hot streak coming off his recent extended absence: Why does Joe Ayrault get such consistently good production with injuries rearing their heads, promotions aplenty, and new acquisitions to blend in? I'd say one really good reason is he doesn't take himself too seriously and he encourages the young men to have fun. There's some real solid looks in this one, men: In the most recent post-game podcast, Robbie Baker appeared to come to the mic with renewed enthusiasm and charisma. Chris Mehring jokingly asked: "Where has this been all year?!" Well, I'd like to tip off us fans a little nugget: Robbie has better stuff than his current numbers suggest. I think we have a chance to see a successful and improved second half from him. His stuff - from delivery to execution - is what I would call 'violent'. I mean this in the best possible way. It was a comfortable 9-1 lead, but, Robbie shut that door down quite easily in the ninth. Here's hoping he has batter luck with BABIP contact and he can lower that WHIP in the second half. With 11 hits on the evening there was plenty of kudos to go around, but, let's focus on the following: Jose Acosta: 2-for-5, 1 HR (2-run jack), 1 run, 3 rbi, 3 k's Joe Gray Jr.: 2-for-5, 1 HR, 1 run, 1 rbi, 1 k Ashton McGee: 2-for-5, 1 HR (2-run jack) 2 runs, 2 rbi, 2 k's Arbert Cipion: 2-for-4, 1 run, 2 rbi, 2 k's The T-Rats now move in sole position of the second half leader board at 9-1. South Bend moves to second at 8-2. *** Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi , Montgomery (Rays) Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please visit and review: Seesaw Middle Innings Push Biscuits to Series Opening Win - Reetz Hits 20th Homer Let me just start with the logo face-off between the 'Biscuits' and the 'Shuckers' is modern sports art at its finest. It's just an incredible display of quality logo work. Every time they play each other, I find myself staring at these logos for seriously way too long: For fun reads on both logos, please visit a Biscuits tidbit HERE (apparently, Illinois' 'Professional Sports Marketing' owns both the Biscuits and the High-A Lansing Lugnuts Minor League Brand Stalwarts) and a Shuckers tidbit HERE (including a nostalgic look at a young Orlando Arcia running the basepaths!). The last time the Shuckers went to Montgomery in early May they, um, well, they didn't fare quite so well: two one-run losses, a two-run loss, a four-run loss, and a good ol' 9-run shellacking. The 6-game sweep was bookended, in heart breaking fashion, by blown saves - one each for Lucas Erceg and JT Hintzen, respectively. I went into this Fourth of July contest, frankly, a wee rattled. Being a Shuckers fan in 2022 is a bit like raising a child: there are good days, there are bad days, and we just pray for growth. I fondly recall that red hot 8-1 Biloxi start to 2022 - the nostalgia is real. SO, with this being said, how did it go in Montgomery during Game 1? Game Notes: Coming off the top-half of the fifth inning, whereby the Shuckers managed to take a 3-2 lead, the following sequence was showcased and seemed the perfect crystallization of the roller-coaster 2022 season. Let me share it with you: lead-off single to right field, ground-out to pitcher Victor Castaneda (runner advances to second base), wild pitch advances runner to third, full count 9 pitch at bat results in game-tying single to right field, full count two-run homer surrendered and Shuckers trail 5-3, next batter walked, pitching change. Seriously, folks. That sums it all up in a nutshell and it has absolutely been that kind of season on a weekly basis. The struggle is real for our Shuckers and they have somehow managed to stay around 0.500 all season. All we can do is root for them to gather momentum, again, and maintain it longer than they have. The positive to take away from Victor's outing, regardless of the blown lead, is he clearly managed to get his pitch count and innings up and seems to now be removed from any lingering concerns over potential effects coming off the IL. Perhaps he tired in the fifth? Regardless, he was relatively effective until that mini meltdown. Thomas Dillard continued his impactful play from the dish with his 6th home run on the season and his 18th double and his 45th rbi. I mentioned it recently, but, it's worth mentioning again: Don't forget about this young man. He's been one of the steadily improving players on the Shuckers roster in 2022. Speaking of the home run, I believe they call it a 'No Doubter'? Jakson Reetz in left field, you say? I do. It's not the first outing he manned the corner outfield spot either. He's an incredibly underrated athlete from my vantage point. But, let's be honest, in 2022 he'll hit home runs from any position: Jakson in right field, Thomas Dillard in the DH spot, Noah Campbell at first base. Speaking of Campbell, man, what a tear he's been on. Here's a highlight from tonight - a game-tying double in the fifth: The Shuckers did manage to load the bases in the top of the seventh inning but they couldn't plate any more runs - including Dillard stranded off his double in the sixth, those four RISP were the key misses in the game. We'll close with a tip of the cap to some solid bullpen work from just activated RHP Arnaldo Hernandez and recently activated RHP Harold Chirino. Both had scuffled some in recent outings - before and after their respective IL stints. Tonight, both hurlers executed scoreless and relatively uneventful evenings to close another loss in Montgomery. *** Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 5, Columbus (Guardians) 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, please visit and review: Sounds Celebrate Fourth of July with Win - Almonte Totals Four RBI's, Boushley Pitches Six Scorless Innings in Series Opener The Sounds headed up river to take on former Brewer farmhand David Fry and the second-place Columbus Clippers. The Clippers host the Sounds this week coming off their recent 5-1 roadtrip at the Iowa Cubs. Columbus came into this contest scoring 90 more runs than the Sounds and lead the International League with 490 total runs - that's 6.28 runs per game to Nashville's 5.19 runs. Let's start it off by looking at a quick tidbit from the those 'Game Notes' (directly above - click that link): (Caleb) Boushley is among International League leaders in wins (8, T-1st), starts (15, T-2nd), innings (80.2, 3rd), ERA (3.24, 4th), WHIP (1.17, 4th) and opponent average (.226, 4th). There are always incredible nuggets on the affiliate players just like this. I highly recommend giving them a quick glance daily as part of your Minor League ritual. With Jason Alexander now with the big club in Milwaukee, Boushley has been asked to fulfill that role of Sounds' starting staff Ace. How did he fare in tonight's contest? Quite well! Caleb is known as a strike thrower and he started tonight in that fashion pounding the zone early with 10 of 12 pitches thrown for strikes. He gave up a lone softly pushed liner to left field in the first inning but held serve from there with a strike out, fly out to Almonte in left field, and force out at second base. On the other side of the diamond, our Sounds saw five of their first six batters strike out in their first two innings - including a three up and three down strikeout buffet in the second. After the Sounds hit two deep fly balls to the warning track in their half of the third inning, the Clippers managed a two-out double off the wall in center field past the chasing Garrett Whitley. One batter later, Garrett managed to run down a deep fly ball high up the wall in center field and made the leaping grab crashing high up the padding. It was a huge play and he saved at least one run and a possible double or triple. Further Viewing Notes: The Sounds were hitless through 4 1/3 and their sole baserunner was Tyler White who reached to begin the fourth inning on a slow chopper to third and throwing error into the dugout. He was given second base. Brice Turang followed with a strikeout - the sixth Sounds punch out of the game. BUT, crafty Mark Mathias said: 'No more, fine Sirs!' He knocked a looping single to center field. Tyler White scored and the throw was off line and bounced past Fry as he attempted to corral the off-target throw. Mathias managed to grab second base - a better throw from the back-up would have grabbed him. Jon Singleton followed suit with another hit - this time a well-hit line drive to right field. Suddenly, there were runners on the corners and the Sounds led 1-0. Keep in mind, as Big Jon approaches the 0.200 BA mark it's due to a torrid hot nine game run of hitting: batting .429 (12-for-28) with two doubles, a triple, three homers, 11 RBI and nine walks. Boushley's greatest impact pitch this evening appeared to be his change-up. It was butter. He got the ever-dangerous lefty David Benson to an unfavorable 0-2 count on a change and, man, it was a glorious sinking pitch just below the zone. Benson then grounded out into a hard-hit double play to Pablo Reyes on a 2-2 count. That change kept him on his heels. He used it with aplomb throughout the contest. All told, Caleb finished his evening with another fantastic body of work: 6.0 ip, five hits, three walks, four strikeouts. His ERA is now down to 3.01 on the season with a 9-2 record overall. An incredible chopper that hit the dirt and leapt a good 15 feet into the air over the third baseman's head plated two in the top of the sixth and it was 3-0 Sounds. Almonte continues his fabulous season switch-hitting at the dish. He's a joy to watch hit baseballs. He also managed the only home run in a game filled with wind-killed fly outs. Abraham's 10th of the season. We know the man can get hot as demonstrated awhile back and now we have this: The ball was oddly not blowing out to left field (as is per usual) in Columbus on this beautiful evening, it was blowing in from dead center field. Several well-hit balls from both ball clubs fell short of the mark, including Tyler White's smash to left center in the top of the sixth that literally fell from the sky like a wounded duck. It sounded beautiful off the bat. I was left scratching my head. Matt Hardy came on in relief to start the bottom of the seventh and, let me tell you, he was absolutely saved by the 12' high extended wall in right field. Bobby Bradley hit an absolute cannon that appeared to miss leaving the playing field by a mere foot or two. Whew. Unfortunately, Hardy faced some adversity with runners on the corner and a wild pitch sending Bradley home and it was 3-1. Matt managed to be his best advocate, however, with two very nice defensive plays to first base to leave the inning with the mere run allowed. The final out was a running barehanded grab and throw to first base on a weakly hit chopper between the mound and third base. Savvy stuff from the young hurler. The pitching mix and development I've witnessed from RHP Lucas Erceg since his promotion from Biloxi is something to behold. In Biloxi he was overwhelmingly relying on his 97-99mph fastball. In Nashville, he's mixing in a breaking ball; change-up; and slider on a fairly regular basis. If he can continue to locate and fine-tune his pitching mix, we are looking at a MLB pitcher. Very exciting stuff. Speaking of relief work, after consecutive walks to put runners on first and second base, how about a three consecutive slider - dead middle, off the outside of the plate, and circling back on the inside edge - strikeout to settle things down? Courageous stuff from Connor Sadzeck. We'll forget about the wild pitch that advanced the runners and the ensuing walk to load the bases. He got the final batter to 0-1 on another savvy first-pitch slider to another righty and then got the lazy fly out to shallow left field on a change-up. The Sounds pulled out another victory and extended their division lead to 2.5 games. *** Please keep in mind the Low-A through Triple-A affiliates are all taking the day off on Tuesday having played on the Fourth - en lieu of their typical Tuesday series openers. 18. Miguel managed 2 2/3 innings of one hit, zero walks, four strikeout ball. 19. The great thing with Big Jon is all you have to do is take one look at his OPS and know he's been impacting the game and the pitch counts all season long. What you don't see is his defense - he's really quite an athletic guy with a sweet glove. He had a prolonged slump in terms of hits but he's certainly turning a corner recently. He's not even at 0.200 yet and his OPS is approaching 0.800 (currently, 0.784). He has a 62:80 bb:k line. So glad he's in that 1B/DH rotation in Nashville. On May 22nd, he was batting 0.224. It was a painful month-long crawl down to 0.163 for him. BUT, here he is with two hot days at the plate and he's creeping back toward 0.200. In other words, he's working back toward his career norms as he leaves the halfway point. In 3,272 Minor League AB's Jon has told us he's essentially a 0.250 hitter with a 0.825 OPS. That's a damn good Minor League player. And, I've said it before: I wouldn't flinch twice to use him in Milwaukee. He can handle his business and he'd be a welcome addition.

  21. Hendry Mendez In the lead-off spot has been an awesome development of late. We forget, at least sometimes I do, he’s only a wee bit older than Chourio. Of all rostered Mudcats, Mendez hits it to the opposite field with savvy well beyond his years.
