  5. I'm just sayin' because I'm literally just sayin': My amateur scouting report seems to have fared well in the early going. Love me some 2022 Jonny Davis. In other news, down the Big ol' River: Jakson Reetz just hit a walk-off two-run jack. PLENTY of room on my Hype Train. Hop aboard.

Instead, and unfortunately, I watched his worst outing of the year. All told, Alexander only made it 2 2/3 innings surrendering six runs on six hits (two 2-run HR's), three walks, and four punch outs. Let's hope he can bounce back in his next outing. Coming into this one he had been executing quite well since his maligned first outing where an error led to five runs and an early exit. The Mudcats did attempt their best to rally back into things late with one of their patented late-inning outbursts, but, unfortunately, their ninth inning mini-rally fell short after Jesus Chirinos hit into a game-ending double play. Further Notes: Not pictured above, but worthy of mention is Zach Raabe and his three walk and two run outing. Jackson Chourio finished 0-for-5 leaving five men on base while doing so. It's not often we see a goose egg with Chourio, but an 0-for-5 with no strikeouts is a good 0-for-5 in my book. Eduardo Garcia continued his recent run of excellence. From my side of the fence, his most noteworthy stat tonight is two free passes to one strikeout. His one absolutely necessary area of growth moving forward is plate discipline. This being said, he has been fantastic of late and it is awesome to witness. Jeferson Quero continues his offensive resurgence with a 2-for-4 outing with a walk and a run Hedbert Perez hit his 12th double of the season and continued his recent run of extra base hits. Here's hoping for a potent second-half! 0-for10 with RISP is not a number the Mudcats will want to repeat in the weeks ahead. It's dueling 8-5 final scores in Five County. The Mudcats took it 8-5 yesterday, the Woodpeckers 8-5 tonight. What will tomorrow bring? Miguel Guerrero and Tyler GIllies gave their all to close the game after Zach Mort's rough start the evening prior. The two combined for six innings of work with a mere single earned run allowed, two hits, two walks, and seven strikeouts. The mini two-run rally came in the bottom of the eighth as Tyler Black and Ethan Murray led the inning with back-to-back singles and were eventually plated by singles from Tristan Peters and Zavier Warren, respectively. That was all there was to it on the day, however, as both teams failed to get baserunners around third and home in the ninth inning. A special mention should be given to Tyler Gillies as he went three full scoreless and effective innings - his longest outing since 2019 and further showing his recovery process is evolving. Game 2 was an entirely different affair altogether as Justin Jarvis returned to his dominant form completing five full innings of one hit and ten strikeout ball. Cam Robinson did his thing grabbing his 18th Save of the season in a scoreless 7th. On the offensive side of things, it was definitely a top of the order performance: 6-for-14 combined for Tyler Black, Ethan Murray, Joe Gray Jr., Tristan Peters, and Zavier Warren. Black, Peters, and Warren each plate a run with Warren providing the pop with a 2-run homer - his 4th of the season. Extra special for Zavier: his Mom and Aunt were in attendance for the games. How awesome is that? Here's the early Tristan Peters infield single that scored the first run in the early going: All in all, the day was about Rattlers pitching: 13 innings pitched and a mere three hits allowed. Hear ye', hear ye'. Keep it coming with the Cam Robinson hype. I'm here for it 24/7. ? This tied former Shuckers Garrett Cooper (2015) and Dustin DeMuth (2016) for the Shuckers franchise record for consecutive hits. In his first at bat, in his second game as a Shucker, he blasted a 2-run homer over the wall in left field plating Noah Campbell who led the Shuckers' first frame with a walk: Andruw did prove his mortality by managing a fly out in his seventh at bat. A collective sigh was heard in the streets of Biloxi and children wailed at the ball park. The streak ended. BUT, alas, the game continued. Proving it isn't always how hard you hit it, Andruw later demonstrated sometimes you just need to make contact: Victor Castaneda struggled in an abbreviated 2 2/3 start (his second intentional condensed outing since his IL return) needing 73 pitches to collect his eighth out. Taylor Floyd came on in relief and his 2 1/3 scoreless, hitless, walk-less innings helped set the tone as he passed the ball to Harold Chirino. All told, Taylor and Harold didn't strike a single batter out but they relied on their defense and the defense provided all they needed. Nash Walters came on in the eighth inning and he showcased his change-up to good effect. Nash started his year strictly working his fastball and slider but, since that time, he has added his curve and change-up to the mix. I am eager to watch his outings in the games ahead as he looks on the cusp of some dominant relief work. What will he need to do this? Locate. Locate. Locate. Still too many 1-0 and 2-0 counts. But, the stuff is there. Zach Vennaro seemed to struggle with his slider a bit tonight and with a consistently very tight strikezone he was forced to try and work his fastball to three consecutive lefty bats. Ultimately, he was done in by a two-run bomb on a pitch that called for up and in. But not enough up and not enough in: This led to a sudden 6-5 deficit. Fear not, Jakson was in waiting in the wings. Jakson will get the majority of tonight's publicity, and rightfully so, but let us not overlook the work of Thomas Dillard. I've mentioned it a couple of time in my reports and I'm going to mention it again now: he's gotten better as the year has progressed. He is starting to heat up at the dish - 3-for-5 tonight - and his BA and OPS are rising as a result. 0.231 and 0.740, respectively. He stayed relevant all season with his impeccable ability to draw walks. Well, other pieces of the puzzle are starting to fit. He's a joy to watch. Joey Wiemer looked frustrated and uncomfortable at the plate. This is the first time I can say this to date. This will be a test of his ability to find and work his way out of this mini-slump. Several off-speed and breaking pitches were his demise tonight - he looked overeager and as though he hoped to meet and greet a misplaced fastball. He adjusted earlier in the season. I expect the same in the weeks ahead. This being said, manning center field again tonight, he made a very nice break on a shallow liner in the later innings and made the diving catch. All eyes are on you, Joey. No pressure.? Where for art thou Gabe Holt? For that matter, where for art thou Sal Frelick? Ahhhh, the mysteries of Minor League injuries persist. Both remain 'Active' and, yet, both remain absent. To this end, is it me or has Garrett Mitchell been on the 7-Day IL since May? I hope to see each and every one these Shuckers very soon. Noah Campbell's recent hitting streak may have come to an end but his offensive impact continues: Ok. Let's take a peak at the view from the Hype Train. What's missing from this glorious scenery is the 1-2 count. The preceding pitch was a 91 mph fastball up and in Jakson swung on and missed violently. There's nothing like getting out ahead of an off-speed breaking pitch and carrying it deep over the wall in left field with one arm. What. A. Stud: *** Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 8, Indianapolis (Pirates) 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, please visit and review: Sounds Complete Comeback to Even Series - Nashville Erases 4-0 Deficit for Come-from-Behind Win It certainly isn't often you witness Jon Singleton drive in Tyler White via a triple. But, I swear to you: I saw this phenomenon. And, my goodness it was beautiful. Jon continued his recent run of excellent results at the plate. I love to see it. Caleb Boushley managed to work his way through a 3-run inning but ultimately gave his club five complete - not his sharpest outing but he kept his team in it and his teammates answered in kind. All told, Caleb finished his evening with five complete innings, working around seven hits and a couple walks, with six key strikeouts and the four earned runs. Not his best outing by any measure but enough to allow his team to chip back into it and ultimately ahead. Further Notes: Yay for a Weston Wilson 3-for-3 outing. Man, was he due. Toss in a walk, two runs, and a rbi and Weston had to have felt some relief post-game. Here's to more production like this! He may have been slumping in recent games but let us not forget, after tonight’s three-hit evening, he's third on the Sounds ball club with 15 multi-hit games. An early absolutely key at bat of the game was Pablo Reyes' two-run jack. Let's take a peak (Oh, hey! That's Weston Wilson on base): The unsung and consistent work of the Nashville bullpen. Is there any bullpen arm more unsung than RHP Matt Hardy? (who, by the way, just continues to get people out): Patrick Dorrian with his first knock as a Sound. Congrats! It was a big insurance chopper with the infield in: I mentioned the Jon Singleton triple. Well, he also knocked in the go-ahead run with a single in the seventh inning. He's heating up, folks. The results may not be what he has hoped for (or fans were hoping for, more likely) but I am telling you: his impact on the field and in the clubhouse is undeniable. I'm glad he's in the Brewers organization. I have all the faith in the world in his talents. One of my Sounds bullpen favorites and recent Brewers call-up, Peter Strzelecki, picked up his second save with a scoreless three-strikeout ninth. When he deals, he deals. 8. Kudos to any of you Johnny Cash fans. Given his 2022 season and tonight's two-run walk-off blast over the wall in left field (that probably left many in my farmhouse wondering what all the hootin' and hollerin' was about), Jakson Reetz did it again. It's hard to fathom the depth of 2021 Minor League Free Agent signings impacting the Brewers organization in 2022. Speaking of which, Andruw Monasterio (signed in November of 2021) began his Shuckers career 6-for-6 with a 2-for-2 start to tonight's contest including a two-run blast in the first inning. Let's recap... DSL Brewers 1 4 , DSL White Sox 2: Daniel (quoted above) gave you the Jhonny Severino teaser. With that double and triple in today's 3-for-5 lead-off line, he is now 8-for-13 over his last three contests. The BA is up to 0.255 and the OPS is creeping toward 0.800 at 0.772. One of our current Brewer Fanatic favorites in Luis Lara continues to perform extremely consistently and extremely well. Today was no different as Luis went 2-for-5 and is now rocking a 0.352 BA with a 0.939 OPS in 72 at bats. In addition to the fine work from Osbriel Mogollon , we saw fine scoreless work from Leonardo Rivera and Jesael Cabrera who pitched five combined scoreless innings. This is three straight victories for the DSL Brewers 1 who have improved to 6 and 12 in their early going. DSL Brewers 2 5, DSL Phillies White 3: Reybert Reyes had a 1 1/3 inning four hit and three run hiccup (including two straight hit batters before departing in the eighth) allowing the Phillies back into the game late. Reyes can thank his running mate Nelson Cuevas for preventing further damage and ensuring a victory to get back to 0.500 at 9-9. Cuevas shut the Phillies down with a closing scoreless 1 2/3 innings. It was shutdown work at first but Nelson worked for it in the end - the drama included consecutive singles, a hit batter, bases loaded drama and a throw at home. Let's hit the showers and call it a 'W'! Whewwww. Perhaps most pleasant in this victory was the multiple hit performances from the bottom-of-the-order and sub 0.200 hitters Demetrio Nadal and Mendy Ferreira. A hard fought if unexpected victory. *** Let's kick off our ACL games with some tasty tasty highlights from RHP Phil Silverio's work last week versus the ACL Royals. ACL White Sox 7, ACL Brewers Gold 4: Let's start with a tip of our proverbial hats to up and coming OF Luis Castillo. With today's 1-for-4 outing (1 rbi, 1 triple), he continues to rake: 0.397 BA and 1.145 OPS in 58 at bats. Quite an intriguing beginning for the 18-year-old prospect. Of note in the pitching realm: Ryan Middendorf completed another scoreless inning - 4 1/3 total. A small sample but a good result. So far, Ryan's unscored upon with a WHIP sub-1.00. And, in his first rehab outing Scott Sunitsch opened with a scoreless one hit, one strikeout inning. Kudos for a successful return! ACL Brewers Blue 3, ACL D-Backs Red 0: A shutout is always worthy of a deeper dive. Seven complete innings of 3 hit, 8 strikeout ball. Anthony Perez started this gem out with five unblemished three hit innings including four strikeouts. Perhaps most impressive is the Brewers Blue did not give out a single walk in the entire outing. Carlos Luna gives the Shuckers four fabulous innings of relief ensuring the comeback victory. Nashville can't escape the early ongoing troubles of Alec Bettinger (BUT, hey, I did get my dominant Tyler Herb fix...all was not lost). Following Perez, Leoni Cruz (at his age of 24 looking to get promoted) completed a scoreless three strikeout inning while Quinton Low pitched another scoreless frame to close out the game. Offensively, the bats were relatively quiet but it was enough. 15. 1.5 years running (He was promoted to Pensacola July 20, 2021) and Griffin Conine continues to be a an all or nothing strikeout or absolute thorn in Biloxi’s side. Let’s take a brief look at his 1.5 years running stat line versus Biloxi: 36 of 145 for a middling 0.248 BA 64 TB’s 11 of the 36 hits: HR’s. So, though he’s only hitting roughly 1 of 4 AB’s there is a 1 in 3 chance that’ll be a long shot over the fence. 5 Dubs 17 runs 19 BB’s 63 K’s ? 22 rbi’s My suggestion to Biloxi pitchers: Don’t give him anything to hit. The odds of Griffin swinging and missing versus walking is far more significant. And the odds are, if you give him something to hit there is a statistical probability it’s leaving the ballpark.

  23. Coming off essentially a week and a half of wedding preparation and ceremonial bliss on my farm with a mere one day of recovery felt a little challenging in my return to covering the teams we all love. But, man, that changed quickly when I watched Biloxi and Wisconsin fight tooth and nail for late victories. Tyler Herb continued his erratic starting performances in Nashville and, well, Carolina, literally gave up A home run and that was the ball game. One hit. One run. Game over. Let's get into the recaps. Transactions: NONE *** DSL Brewers 2 13, DSL Brewers 1 8: Our two young Brewers squads in the Dominican League faced off for their second time in their extremely young season and, just as in the first contest, the DSL Brewers 2 managed to pull one out. It's fair to say: this one has the looks of a sloppy 11 error affair (Wooooof!) that aided seven unearned runs to cross the plate. Jhofez Mejias took the loss for the DSL Brewers 1 but not a single of his four runs were earned ?. Special mention should be given to DSL Brewers 2's Jeral Vizcaino who managed to execute the rare scoreless two-inning stint in this one. A mere walk with three strikeouts gave his pitching line a special shine. As seen above in the score, there were quite a few runs across the plate in this affair. On the DSL Brewers 2 side of things, Brayan Oropeza continues to hit the living heck out of the ball. With two more singles, a walk, and three rbi's in this game his OPS is now sitting at an absolutely sustainable 1.632. Whewww. Irving Igualas managed another two hits, as did Reminton Batista (including his first home run of the year in the first - a solo shot), and Juan Baez. Special kudos to Francisco Nina and his breakout three-hit game. On the DSL Brewers 1 side of things, Luis Lara managed to hit his fourth double as did Duncan Garcia (two hits on the day including said fourth double), and Gery Holguin managed to collect two hits including his sixth rbi. Holguin's average and OPS may be pedestrian but he is clearly opportunistic with his knocks. Carolina Pre-Game Notes (No Game Notes posted ?) It is what it is. As noted in the organizational headline, the Mudcats are now tied with Salem for first place atop their division. Let's hope they can earn some separation after tomorrow's contest. Carlos Rodriguez held the Down East Wood Ducks hitless and scoreless through three full innings. With one swing of the bat, that predicament changed and the Mudcats trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth. And, well, this one essentially ended right there. It's not often you lose 1-0 in a one-hit affair. That is exactly what happened tonight for our Mudcats. All three Mudcats hits came in the first three innings. The Wood Ducks managed one hit through nine innings. A home run. And, Mudcats lose 1-0. This is one of those brief write-ups. What more is there to say? This was a pitching duel. Rodriguez made a single mistake. Israel Puello came on and shut it down. The bats simply never knocked a run across. *** Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 4, Quad Cities (Royals) 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers' site, game details, please visit and review: Rattlers Rally for 4-2 Win Over River Bandits - Gray and Warren Deliver Two-RBI Hits in Wisconsin's Big Inning Zach Mort got the starting nod and pitched five complete and effective innings. He left with a 0-0 score and a mere three hits and two walks with three punch outs. From pitch one, Zach was pounding the zone with an effective blend of off speed stuff keeping hitters uncomfortable. This was the best version of Zach I've seen of recent vintage. I was particularly impressed with his curve and breaking balls. He worked fast, he was confident, and he pitched with purpose. And, if we're honest, he was helped by a little bit of barehanded work from Mike Brosseau : Full Game Highlights here: And, HERE'S your post-game audio podcast. As always, please enjoy. Further Game Viewing Notes: Minor League umpire special number two of the evening: A failed first batter strike out on a full count for Cam Robinson. It was a glorious inside breaking pitch. Completely buckled and fooled the batter. And, apparently, it fooled the umpire as well. Strikes matter. And, sometimes, they're hard to see for the home plate umpire and, well, that's just what it is in these lower level affairs. I share a sigh for you, Cam. And, for you, Wes Clarke. I saw you bickering - rightfully so! Oh wait! Said umpire also missed a called third strike on a 2-2 count to close the game. It was another gorgeous breaking ball. This one dead right center of the plate. A good six inches below the top of the strike zone. AND, yet, said ump managed to call that beauty a ball while calling strike three on a breaking ball a good 6" off the inside of the plate. We'll take it but, also, that has to be extremely tough on these pitchers. And, calling balls and strikes in the modern game just isn't easy. Sighs for all! I return from my wedding and Justin King has been promoted to Wisconsin from the ACL Brewers Gold?!? And, to boot, he debuted with a flawless inning in a comeback win?! ?You have to love it. Well done, Justin! His clean top half of the eighth inning kept the game within winning distance. Let's enjoy two much deserved clutch hits here by Joe Gray Jr. and Zavier Warren . They've had a bit of the bad luck contact blues lately. It was awesome to see them finally break through: *** Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 4, Pensacola (Marlins) 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please visit and review: Reetz Homer Completes Shuckers Comeback in 5-4 Win - Devanney Ties Franchise Record With 15-Game Hit Streak My first Shuckers game in over a week, and, well, it was not that wonderful to witness an umpire blow a beautiful strike three breaking ball off the outside of the plate to start inning one. Baseball is back baby! Fear not, Mr. Bullock, you got that left field fly out to atone for the umpire's false eyes and struck out the third batter for a three-up and three-down first inning. The Shuckers saw Noah Campbell lead-off the bottom-half with his 10th double of the season and was immediately sent home on the wings of a Joey Wiemer home run rocket to left field - his fifteenth of the year. Other than a Paul McIntosh home run in the fourth inning (his fifth of the year versus Biloxi - settle down, Paul!) this was Bullock's best outing perhaps all season. Let's take a look at the first inning Wiemer blast: It was 2-0 Shuckers heading to the second inning. Sal Frelick left yesterday's game after a triple, and, well, there was admittedly no update as per Garrett Greene in the press box. We'll have to keep an eye and ear open for any news or updates. Terence Doston took Frelick's spot in center field. Further Viewing Notes: I continue to find it a challenge to get a read on Carlos Luna. He came on to spell Bullock in the top of the fifth inning and grabbed out number one on a weak grounder to first (barely thrown out by Felix Valerio ) but then proceeded to walk a batter, give up a rope double off the wall in left field, and then hit a batter to load the bases. The Blue Wahoos managed a deep sacrifice fly to center field to tie the game at 2-2. Thankfully, Luna limited the damage there. He managed a strikeout to end the inning and then started off the top of the sixth with another punch out and closed the same frame with a whiff as well. He has much better stuff than his current ERA would tell but, for whatever reason, it has yet to all come together for a meaningful stretch in 2022. Let's hope for more consistent and better runs of play in the second half of this season. Recently, a forum poster proposed: "Is Joey Wiemer in a slump?" I would simply offer: "Maybe?". And, if it is, it's a 'mini slump' or it's simply a sudden lack of favorable production and luck at the plate. Joey simply impacts the game in far too many ways to consider some strikeouts and some bad luck a 'slump'. I truly believe this. Just look at last night's game where he literally executed three web gems to secure a victory. Wiemer can impact any and every game with more than his bat. Tonight he simply managed a key two-run jack. This is the best version of Justin Bullock I've seen in 2022. He was hitting all edges of the zone. He was mixing in his curve, his breaking ball, and his change-up with an effective fastball. He limited the Blue Wahoos to one run on the McIntosh homer and was just 'in control'. Kudos are in order. Cam Devanney led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a sliced single to left field. Cam has now hit safely in 15 games and reached base safely in 21. His 2022 surge continues. If Devanney is most improved on Biloxi, Campbell is a close second. His rip down the third base line scored the tying runs in the seventh after his ground rule double led to his run scored on the Wiemer home run blast. Noah has been absolutely fantastic since his low point early on - an error earlier in the season when he dropped a routine fly ball leading to a tough Home loss. After an 18 day stint on the IL in May, Noah has hit to the tune of 'WOW'. Check out his June Game Logs Here: a truly INCREDIBLE 48 AB run. Take notice. Wiemer has been thrown from games two times in the past month or so. Well, after an absolutely botched check swing third strike call (folks, it wasn't even close) he almost got his third ejection. I have absolutely zero idea what the first base umpire was looking at but, man, that was a key botched call. With Campbell on third he stayed there as Joey was called out and Pedro Severino grounded out in his at bat. It was 4-4. I've driven the Jakson Reetz 'Hype Train' all season long and I certainly am not stopping now. He hits the absolutely crucial solo shot to take the 5-4 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning (his 15th of the year). Winning players make winning plays. I didn't see a single Wahoo base runner even attempt a steal tonight. I love this young man's game. A first half MVP for me 100%. How awesome has Zach Vennarro been for the Shuckers in 2022? Well, let's just give the generic: Awesome. Since returning to Biloxi he's been lights out. Tonight was no different as he secured the quick and easy three-up and three-down Save to close out the come back win. With four more victories to close out an improbable 6-0 series win versus Pensacola, the Shuckers can take the first half and an automatic Playoff birth. They have taken the first two. Let's root for four more! *** Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Gwinnett 7, Nashville 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, please visit and review: Stripers Defeat Sounds to Even Series - Late Runs Not Enough as Sounds Fall 7-2 Tyler Herb continued his up and down work in Nashville on a down note to start this evening. After two complete innings, he had conceded two runs on five hits. He did manage to prevent any free passes and had a lone strikeout but it is fair to say Herb has struggled with men on base during his brief promotion to Triple-A Nashville. He ended his rough outing managing to complete five full innings on the evening but he conceded 11 hits, five runs, and a walk to boot. It's been mostly a struggle since the promotion. Here's to better games ahead! Luke Barker gave up two runs late with the game 5-2 in favor of Gwinnett. Further Notes: The Jon Singleton heartbreak continues for me. 0-for-4 on the evening with four strikeouts. Captain Muscles, I'm rooting for you. But, man, how the mighty have fallen since the Jacksonville series weeeeeeeks ago. Let's turn it around! The Sounds ended up 2-for-7 with RISP. Ultimately, this played a large part in the game getting out of hand. They managed nine hits. They simply tacked on the two runs too late. Hats off to the bullpen for allowing a mere two hits. Barker's two runs given up ultimately didn't matter, but, it is worth noting Luke's ERA after the two-run home run is above 4.00. In a frustrating 7-2 loss, it is worth pointing out the defense continued: three double plays for the Sounds on the evening. Pablo Reyes, Corey Ray and Brice Turang all went 2-for-4 on the evening. Pablo, however, managed the lone rbi's. Kudos to decent nights at the dish. *** That's all for me in an evening of mixed results in our lower levels. 24.
