  1. How about a TWO Home Run game for Sal Frelick?!? Whewwwwwwww. Ripped another rope over the right field wall.
  2. Yup. Watched it. Looked better, honestly. The wild pitch was obviously not desirable. BUT, all in all, his control was quite a bit better. Frelick biffed a tough fly ball down the line. He got there. Dove. But, in diving, missed the ball by a foot behind his glove. BUT, Severino just hit a blast over the left field wall.
  3. LOL. FIVE stolen bases. IN THE FOURTH INNING. My word. He is unreal. In case you're curious, he just broke Otis Nixon's Sounds record. Yes, that Otis Nixon. Wild. If you don't know early 1980's Sounds history, those teams had some talent. Big time talent. And, managed at the time by a young upstart named 'Buck Showalter'. Best part about tonight's steals? They're all against Payton Henry who instigated the ol' bench clearing scuffle back in Jacksonville a couple weeks back:
  4. Esteury Ruiz just tied the Sounds single-game record with his 4th stolen base in a single game. It's the 4th inning, for crying out loud. My goodness.
  5. With the earlier single and then the double in the fourth frame, OF Corey Ray extended his hitting streak to 9 games. Man, there is so much good mojo going on even with only two teams playing these final week(s).
  6. And, another Joey Wiemer laser shot double. This one a lead-off knock to the wall in left field here in the bottom of the third inning. The man can turn on a ball.
  7. Nick Kahle, welcome to the partayy! His two-run blast knocks home Corey Ray (double) here in the top of the 4th inning and the Shuckers now lead 6-0. Let's go!
  8. Esteury Ruiz just stole his 3rd base and we've completed two innings. ?
  9. Frelick BABY! He just extended his on base streak to 31 games while ripping a three-run blast over the wall in right field. Wowsers. That was FUN. Sounds lead 4-2. Meanwhile, Columbus is trailing 9-1 in the middle innings.
  10. Shuckers just put up 4 runs on 2 hits in the 2nd inning. They lead 4-0. Castaneda scuffles through inning one giving up 2. The Sounds grabbed one back in the first off a Turang single. Keeping the error party going, Pablo Reyes skies a routine backhanded stab and throw deep in the hole bringing Singleton off the bag. That's now 6 Sounds errors in 10 IP.
  11. RHP TJ Shook looks to get things going again. Let's hope he can close his season strong! Chourio is back in the two-hole. The Shuckers as a whole are riding a five game winning streak - quite the feat and quite the late season turnaround. Let's grab this series and run for the off-season!
  12. It would appear LHP Ethan Small was swapped out for RHP Victor Castaneda. Wiemer, Ruiz, and Frelick are protecting the outfield grass. Jonny Davis is taking the DH spot. Let's hope this is the start of some much needed winning.

  14. And then there were two - Biloxi and Nashville. What a long strange trip it always is. We begin each season with four full-season affiliates, we add four summer league teams (in the Dominican and in Arizona), and then we lose the same four summer league teams. Finally, we whittle away Low-A and High-A and we enter the home stretch. Soon there will only be our beloved Nashville Sounds left standing. The Minor League baseball season is a wild and wooly beast and we are here for every step of the way. Let's get into the reports. The Minor League baseball season is a wild and wooly beast and we are here for every step of the way. Let's get into the reports. Transactions: Firstly, let's get you up to date with the brief flurry of moves from Monday: A special congratulations is in order, from my POV, to RHP Taylor Floyd who did it the hard way and earned his way back to Double-A. He was phenomenal in Wisconsin. And, of course, congratulations to all other players who receive these late season promotions. All extremely well deserved. I guess we should also definitely point out the historic nature of Jackson Chourio's late-season send off in Double-A: That probably deserves a: "WOW!". At this point, these types of things are ridiculously routine for Chourio which is, well, simply nuts. And, lastly, there were a couple Brewers-related moves today: RHP Trevor Gott and OF Jonny Davis were both sent on rehab assignments to the Nashville Sounds Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Jacksonville (Marlins) 4, Nashville 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, please visit and review: Sounds Drop Series Opener to Jumbo Shrimp - Lead atop International League West Division Remains 2.5 Games Happy birthday to Marcus Walden who turned 34 years young on this fine September day. Coming in to this game tonight, my first thought was: "A plus 5 ERA does not do justice for the fine work Walden has given the Sounds outside of, say, two rough outings.". By and large, he's been a multi-tool for the pitching staff. He'll start. He'll come out of the bullpen. He's dependable. Like Josh Lindbolm, he's another quality veteran and I've enjoyed the work he's given his team and the fans so far in 2022. He finished tonight with just 76 pitches, 52 strikes, in 6 complete IP. All told he gave up 1 R (unearned), 4 H, 1 BB, 5 K. He lowered his ERA to 4.53 and I exhaled freely: justice was served in the baseball universe. Three Quick Strikes: 1) The air seemed a bit stiff in Nashville tonight - several fly balls seemed to fall flat at the warning track as the ballpark flags drooped listless high atop their poles. It could be I see things less accurately as I age, but, this certainly seemed to be the case. This being said, a Sounds outfield combination of Esteury Ruiz, Jonathan Davis , and Joey Wiemer (left to right) has some serious serious speed and can cover some serious serious ground. During RHP Trevor Gott's first rehab inning, Ruiz ran down a well-hit liner down the left field line with a man on first. It was a key out. He made the fly out look awfully routine. I'm here to tell you: it most definitely was not. He ran down a hard hit liner in shallow left field an inning or two prior. You have to absolutely earn everything you hit into that Nashville outfield grass. 2) Sal Frelick is an on base machine in Triple-A Nashville. He started his evening 3-for-3 adding his fifth three hit game since his promotion (he also has a four hit game in his bag). He is truly an exciting pure lead-off prospect for the Brewers - every at-bat is a battle, nothing is freely given, and he more often than not can work the count to his benefit even when he's behind 0-2. It's simply a matter of time - there is entirely too much talent in this young man's toolkit - before he's an everyday player in Milwaukee. 3) Five errors committed by the division leading, fielding percentage leading, Nashville Sounds? Unfortunately, that isn't a typo. I saw several of these miscues - none worse than the E2, E6 in succession by Pedro Feliciano and Brice Turang allowing the absolutely not speedy Willians Astudillo to score from first base in the Jacksonville eighth frame. Feliciano also managed his 11th passed ball on his season in an ugly catch attempt of a Gott outside 96-mph heater. Feliciano got his full glove on the ball and, well, he simply didn't catch it. A smart betting man would opine: we probably won't see a poorer fielding night the rest of Nashville's 2022 season; previous to this laugher, the Sounds had topped out at two errors in a game on 14 separate occasions. This was as ugly as it will get. We're onward and upward from here, folks! Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 7, Pensacola (Marlins) 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shucker' site, game details, please visit and review: Chourio Drives in Three in Double-A Debut as Shuckers Top Wahoos - Luna Twirls Six Quality Innings All I want for (baseball) Christmas is a solid ending to the Shuckers season. Taking game one in convincing, quality start, shutdown bullpen fashion in Pensacola gives me the fuel I need to watch these young men close their 2022 season in a good way. It's certainly been no secret that I've endured these Shuckers up-and-downs from afar as I have watched the Brewers Double-A affiliate throughout all of 2022. But, let me tell you, the way they bounced back versus Mississippi in their closing home series after seeing a 26-4 deficit through two games has me believing again. RHP Carlos Luna gave us a fantastic quality start to get the series started right. His teammates followed suit. Three Quick Strikes: 1) OF Jackson Chourio definitely impacted his first Double-A game in classic Chourio fashion: 1-for-4, 1 2B, 1 SF, 3 RBI, 3 K. The strikeouts were back in a hurry with this level jump but so were the timely hits and skillful plays. Take a look on this deep drive to almost leave the ballpark high up the right center field wall nearly clearing the bases (apologies, Jason Lopez): He followed with a very casual deep liner sacrifice fly to extend the Shuckers lead to 7-2 in the sixth inning. The strikeout rate had improved significantly with his jump to High-A dropping to a very respectable 21%. We'll simply have to watch and see if he can adapt in this extremely brief test of Double-A waters. All in all, a very solid debut. 2) I've said it a couple times recently, but it's worth bringing it up again: the example OF Garrett Whitley is giving in Biloxi is noteworthy. I love his availability, his approach, his body language, his professionalism and his results. After tonight's 2-for-4 outing (1 2B, 1 HR, 1 BB), he pushed his BA to 0.260 and his OPS to 0.865. He has speed that plays all over the outfield and on the base paths. I do not take his efforts for granted and I sincerely hope the Brewers can keep his veteran presence in the fold in 2023. If they could manage to keep both he and Monasterio in the fold, that would be a massive get for organizational depth at the upper levels. Both young men are just entering their primes and both young men are fantastic baseball players. Let's get this done, Brewers! 3) Welcome back to Double-A, Taylor Floyd. What a turnaround for this young man as he has battled through the early season woes in that early-season arduous return from injury. He has turned many new pages over the past month plus in Appleton and this continues for Biloxi as he looks to close his 2022 campaign. Floyd went 1 scoreless IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K. How rough was his early season tenure with the Shuckers? He lowered his ERA to 8.18 in Double-A after tonight's scoreless frame. RHP TJ Shook looks to bounce back strong after his most recent outing and LHP Ethan Small continues looking for a quality start. With Nashville barely clinging to a 2 1/2 game lead, and with their worst defensive performance of 2022 in their rearview mirror, now is the time for Small to find that early season shutdown stuff. Your team needs you, Mr. Small. It is time. 16. That was one of the uglier, listless, uninspired outings I've seen from the Sounds all year. A long season will do that. They maintain their 2.5 game lead over Columbus. Let's hope they can shake some of the cobwebs off that Charlotte series and get back to the type of baseball we've seen them play for 90% of their season. 4-1 Jumbo Shrimp. RHP Marcus Walden deserved better. He gave his all in a fantastic 6 IP, 1 R (unearned, you might guess) outing. On to the next.
  17. RHP Zach Brown gives up another run in relief. He appears to be scuffling late in his season - he played his part in the recent loss after leading 6-1 in the ninth inning in Charlotte. And, just like that he walks a man and Rick Sweet is pulling him. 4-1 Jacksonville. Two down. You know Sweet did not want to have to use another relief arm. Tough going of late for Nashville deep in their playoff push. It would appear they are on the verge of losing an opportunity to gain another game ahead of Columbus.
  18. My word, is Feliciano prone to being an absolute butcher behind home plate. His throw to second base here in the 8th inning was embarrassing. It landed about 15 feet before the bag. I have no idea what that was. Ugly as could be. Ended up in the outfield. Turang then rushing his throw to third airmails it into the stands. Whewwwww. E2. E6. FIVE Sounds errors? This is a very very rare affair - they lead the entire International League in fielding %. Yuck. And, if you've never watched Jacksonville, let me tell you: Willians Astudillo is emphatically not a burner on the basepaths. He's feisty, a hell of a hitter, but he's short and overweight. This is not a base stealer. That was just as ugly as it gets.?
  19. I honestly don't care where they move Sal. He'll stay in the top 50. What I'm advocating for quite a bit more is: get Jeferson Quero in that top 100. Absurdity if he isn't recognized for the stud he is. I've been calling for this before his recent tear. Given how he ended the season, it's a no-brainer.
  20. JC Mejia just gave up an absolute laser shot BOMB over the restaurant in deep right field (410 feet it would appear, 111 mph off the bat). A no doubter. Le sigh. 2-1 Jumbo Shrimb in the top of the 8th. There was nothing 'Shrimp' like in that blast. Yikes. No doubt about it.
  21. RHP Trevor Gott is getting his first rehab action here in the top of the 7th. This one is still knotted up at 1-1. His first batter, one Payton Henry, ripped a laser shot grounder off the bottom of his left foot. He looks just fine, however, and has now gotten two down on fly outs. Ruiz absolutely ran down a deep liner down the line in left field - a lot of range with Davis in CF and Wiemer in RF. Gott is touching 95-96 mph with the heat but he is definitely hanging pitches as he works his way back. This is an extremely important game right now with the Clippers having lost. Jacksonville trails Durham by a game and a half as well and Durham lost. Both teams have lots to gain with a victory tonight. As I type, Gott gave up a ripped liner through the gap between first and second base. Wiemer holds Henry at second. Men on 1st and 2nd base, two down. 0-2 count. Feliciano shows his ugly glove work as a 96 mph outside heater reaches the heart of his mitt and he completely biffs it. A passed ball - his 11th of the year - advance both runners. Men on 2nd and 3rd base. That was an ugly play by Feliciano in a key spot. No harm, no foul however. Gott gets the weak dribbler to Singleton at 1B. On to the bottom of the 7th.
  22. Chourio plates Jason Lopez on a well-hit sac fly liner to deep left center on the tip of the warning track. 7-2 Shuckers. Let's go, men! Let's close this season out on a high note. Love it!
  23. AND, third time on base for Frelick who smokes a single line drive to right field. My goodness. 3-for-3. Flat out on base machine. His fifth 3-hit game as a Sound. He's also had a 4-hit game. He'll have a chance for that tonight. Whewwwww. *I should add: Frelick was thrown out from deep center field on a deep towering shot hit by Esteury Ruiz. He tried to aggressively take second base (a worthwhile play to do so) but was thrown out by a better play from the center fielder. He nailed him by a good 3 feet. Turang flied out to left field in the ensuing AB and a lead-off dangerous base runner situation was extinguished mighty quick.
  24. It would appear we might get our second bases juiced AB for Jackson Chourio. Let's see what Corey Ray does with his 0-2 count. Nevermind, men on 2nd and 3rd. Ray hit a deep fly to straightaway center field that drops onto the warning track dirt plating two.
  25. Two very close baseball games approaching the midway point. Shuckers lead 3-2. One down and a man on first (on a double pump late throw from Ethan Murray on a slow dribbler) in the bottom of the 5th. Nashville is tied 1-1 here after Payton Henry's sac fly in the 4th. 1-1 Sounds and Jumbo Shrimp are knotted up. No benches have cleared as of yet ?
