  1. Trading for a stopgap CF doesn't make sense, but a short term FA that they can flip for prospects isn't a bad way to go. Of course that would still leave the same hole in CF, but possibly only for August.
  2. Doesn't sound like there is enough to charge him with anything. MLB could still do something, but it is hard to say what.
  3. Yea, Fields didn't have a history so dropping him was no big deal, but Strong has been around for a while and even if he was old for the level, he pitched decently last year. Dropping him now suggests things are coming. Maybe they are trading Arcia for a backup catcher, aging 3B, and a #5 starter, so they need the roster spots.
  4. If only another GM is smoking whatever you are. Right now the only stealing is Garza from the Brewers. I hope he turns it around and becomes a decent pitcher next season, but right now I think the market hasn't risen from 0 for Garza.
  5. Lucroy and Lind definitely and Segura if they get a good match. I'd like them to keep Davis for the year to show what he can do with a full year of healthy play. A 30+ HR guy with 3 years of control should bring a very high return. Smith seems more like a trading deadline piece. Scooter would also be a guy to trade at the deadline, if he has a good first half. I think Davis has more value now, especially to a team who is looking for a power bat but is currently facing budget constraints (i.e. Toronto). Getting a proven player with 30+ HR potential for the league minimum is huge to these types of teams. I say trade him now while his value is high since i do not see him as a valuable enough piece to keep around while we rebuild. Give his playing time to Santana. I guess the question is will someone this off season pay for Davis like he is one of the top 5 home run hitters in the NL (extrapolating to a full season, or by using AB per HR), and right in his prime. To me that production with his contract should net a better return than a top 100 prospect. Maybe a top 50 plus a high-upside team top 20. If a team will pony up a sizable offer then trade him, otherwise let him play for the Brewers. Barring a serious injury, I don't see his value declining over the next year.

  7. You sound like you didn't want to see Sardinas sliding over to first a la Alex Gonzalez.
  8. I'm starting to get a case of the shakes, Stearns hasn't made a trade for a few days now...... They all went home early for Thanksgiving. No Black Friday player sales. Maybe someone will decide in a couple of weeks they need a nice shiny 1B as a gift to the fans and overpay a bit for Lind.
  9. No, probably not. But Ramon Flores was ranked what, >20 in his own organization? I don't like the return, especially at a position as easy to fill as OF/1B. Hopefully Stearns views Flores as being wildly undervalued and he proves me wrong. I'm satisfied with the return. Flores looks like a better offensive prospect by a long stretch. The Brewers have a lot of options at SS/2B, and not much depth at first. That plus roster flexibility makes this a good trade to me.
  10. Not sure it makes sense that the player is already on Detroit's 40. If the Brewers have a full roster after the rule 5 draft, they have to cut someone to make room for the PTBNL. I suppose it gives them more time to trade Lind et al, but a non 40 player just makes more sense to me.
  11. I'm betting they give Villar first crack at the starting 3B job. That would fill a big hole for the Brewers for several years. I know his numbers there aren't great, but if he knows that is where the opportunity is and starts working on it now, I think he'll be fine.
  12. Factoring in the freedom to get a rule V guy does help push the value of this trade up. I suppose we won't know for a while who might be available. Hopefully there is an intriguing 1B or 3B prospect that some team is trying to slip through unprotected.
  13. Depending on the PTBNL, the return may go from marginal to ok. I wasn't expecting the massive haul Kimbrel got, but I was hoping for a prospect that has a good chance to be an above average MLB player. KRod has been really good the last two years. The salary dump is nice for the Brewers bottom line, but I'm not sure how it means anything to the on field product.
  14. Big blow, although with the Cards, they'll just pluck another pitcher from their magic pitcher tree who will go 18-5 next season with a 2.75 era.
  15. The military shout-outs are an effective use of advertising money. It says to potential recruits "Hey, if you are in the service, people will respect what you do and honor you at various events." Great advertising, but only if nobody knows they are doing it. Once the curtain is pulled back, it becomes worse than useless. Sponsoring GBA doesn't seem effective as a recruiting tool, and has legal issues. I'm guessing we will still see some 'honest' military tributes, particularly on Memorial Day, Flag Day and the 4th.
  16. The reports aren't giving any information on the true cause, and haven't included lines like "cause is unknown pending results of toxicology tests". That could mean that the family doesn't want any further disclosure. It is their right in their time of grief. However, disclosure could help other people at risk. My speculation would be one of: Drug OD, Suicide, Infection (MRSA, pneumonia)
  17. Yeah, but he's a shadow of the McGehee who was with the Brewers. I am a little upset. I liked Perez, he seemed like an option at short or third, definitely a decent utility player. I hope it's more a case of protecting some folks from the Rule V draft (there are some I am VERY worried about losing). Very likely they want the spot for Rule V. Stearns indicated the Brewers would try to re-sign Perez, so he may still be back. It just makes sense for Perez to look around. It's unlikely that he will get a 40 man spot from anybody until after the rule V draft and after the dust has settled from free agency and trades.
  18. The Brewers have announced the giveaways: http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/343907192.html Besides the usual bobbleheads an T-shirts, the Bob Uecker talking alarm clock sounds unique and cool. “Get up...Get up…Get outta bed!”
  19. Or against, since Boo is 3/4 of Boog. Really surprised that this Boog is unrelated to the original.
  20. A high school season is a small sample size. Maybe the equivalent of a month or so of a professional schedule. It is hard, if not impossible to make proper projections using the normal statistics for the big leagues. Somewhere somebody must be trying to crack the code of what combination of measurables, game statistics, and other gradable traits gives a reliable way to project prospects. The first team to do so will start having some of the best drafts in history. Might almost be easier to develop a time machine to find out which players develop, though.
  21. The money is taxpayer money and the U.S. government has an $18 trillion debt. It should not be spending it stealthily on patriotic displays. That's the big deal. Can't blame the Brewers for taking it, but the I certainly don't want my tax dollars wasted like that. The military has a pretty big advertising budget, so the cost is less of an issue. The fact that the 'patriotic activities' were paid for cheapens the message. The specific sponsoring of GBA has other problems, beyond the scope of this board. Now that the practice is ending, will the various shout-outs to the military continue or not? I'm guessing some will still happen, but not as frequently as in the past.
  22. If you choose to look at his entire career it looks like Dave Bush or Jeff Suppan. Looking at the numbers Estrada is clearly better than Bush (WHIP, H9, etc). It does look like Estrada got a bit lucky this last year with a lower K9, but a 3.1 era vs 4.4 FIP. Both teams got pretty much the best they could have hoped for from the players they got. It was a fair trade, but given what happened prospects would have been more useful to the Brewers. Since Lind raised his value, hopefully they can get a good prospect for him. 800 ops first basemen who play decent defense don't grow on trees (or else the Brewers have been in the wrong forest far too often).
  23. I watched the postseason more this year than any other year in the last 10 (except when the Brewers were in it, and even then when the Brewers lost, I couldn't take watching it anymore). Far better story lines this year, and the teams I really didn't want to see win, lost out early. As for "Every night something unusual happens", this postseason had more of that than any I can remember. When is the last time you saw an inside the park HR in the series? When is the last time you saw 3rd to home on a grounder after the runner was looked back (not counting your son's little league games). And what about the wild 8th inning in Toronto? I'll grant that baseball is better when it is warmer, but beyond that and not having the Brewers in it, you couldn't ask for much more.
  24. A priority doesn't mean the only or even the highest priority. Besides there are some spots in the field where you can go with the old "the best defense is a good offense" rule.
  25. A good bullpen will do that for any manager. I saw Ned brought in his closer an inning early in one of the games. It was against the bottom of the order though. The Mets brought their closer in during the 8th for two of the games, so that kind of move is not out of the ordinary for the World Series. Granted it back-fired on the Mets, so the difference between a smart move and a dumb move by the manager is how well it works out.
