  1. I wonder if you can improve on the bunt results by some sort of slow swing to try and poke the ball down the line past the third baseman for a double.
  2. Well selling Estrada, Weeks and/or Overbay would be ok. Other than that, hell no. There's no reason this team can make a run in the playoffs. They may not have a top ace, but 1-4 (and recent history shows team fair better with 4 than 3 starters in the playoffs) are solid and the lineup is good. Sure they could fail, but unless they totally tank right after the break, they should go for it.
  3. itsd Coors field I would add something about the Rockies pitching staff also, but we are still playing them, so all I will say is that they are really good. Colorado played shaky defense over last weekend, and had 3 errors in the series against the Cards (didn't watch so I can't say if there were any non-called errors). They played better last night. Stl looks like it had a post Coors hitting hangover against the Dodgers last night. Hopefully that will last for a few games.
  4. Surprised that Aoki's power has fallen off a cliff. Zero HR's and slugging down over 100 points from 2 years ago. Before the Garza signing it looked like Smith might be in the rotation, so I don't see how a starter for an expendable OF would be a big win for the Royals. Rephrasing it as a starting OF for a reliever makes it sound better, but Smith pitched well last year so the trade seemed pretty reasonable to me. Smith being outstanding this year and Aoki being down makes it look like a Brewers steal.
  5. What??? Where are you? BTW, why is the game not on FOX Sports WI? Not in any danger, but the only station I can get at work (Madison station) went to tornado coverage because it was in their range. I'm actually surprised that they didn't switch as soon as the warning went out.
  6. It doesn't matter, the Cardinals can just take a pile of dirt, water, parsley and frogs eggs and a #2 pitcher will spontaneously generate overnight. Guaranteed to throw 7+ shutout in his first start against the Brewers.
  7. Lohse clearly did not intend to hit anybody, but he did get a guy up near the head, and nearly hit the AZ pitcher in the head. It's not surprising that drew a response from the Diamondbacks. The fact that it took two pitches to hit Braun was bad and fist-bump was over the line and should draw a suspension from Gibson. I hope Garza doesn't do anything stupid tonight. Lucroy's slam is plenty to end this.
  8. Good thing Lucroy doesn't bat left handed, or he might get beaned by Molina on the throw back to the pitcher.
  9. Sad day for baseball and a very sad day for San Diego. I can't remember anything negative written about him. On the flip side, I can't think of anything positive about tobacco. Time to get it out of baseball, now.
  10. Well, the medical report said no structural damage. The GM is calling it tennis elbow. Card fans know that you can't rely on the Med staff. They surely must have all graduated from the Haiti school of Medicinal Voodoo. So the Card's staff is that way too. Thornburg was just diagnosed with common wrist flexor irritation. I think that is code for amputation in 3 weeks.
  11. Yikes Hope it's nothing serious. The way thing are going this year you'd think there's a virus out there that attacks elbow tendons.
  12. Possibilities are: 1) They played better than they actually were last year (could be said about just about any WS team, e.g. Boston) and are regressing to their mean. 2) They and Matheny aren't dealing well with a WS hangover. 3) Nothing. They are a veteran team with plenty of talent, over .500, just 5 games out, and it is still early June. Don't bet against them. 4) Nothing part b - Cardinal fans have been spoiled for so long they get whiny when they are not up by 10 games on June 1st. My take is that it is mostly 3 and 4, with a smidge of 1. My hope is that it is mostly 1 and 2 (with 4 a bit of a given).
  13. The thing is for this to be a plan from the beginning means that the Brewers were sure Gatewood and Harrison would fall to them. I don't think they have that kind of crystal ball. I'm guessing they really liked Medeiros and grabbed him when they could.
  14. I wonder if there is a way to add in bonuses to the contracts for being added to the 40 man roster or making the Major League, or accruing 1 year in the big leagues. These would not be guaranteed, but would give the player extra for making it. That plus a little over slot should make a more tempting offer.
  15. Careful, Yuni is doing poorly enough to be cut in Japan. If they cut him he may come back to the US. Still, a roster spot spent on Yuni could be better spent being a player short.
  16. In the article, you mention that you wished Brandon Diaz could play second, but they put him in center. What was the reasoning behind the position switch?
  17. i'd care . . . especially if more than one team from the nl central advances. it means more revenue for those teams . . . revenue that they can spend in the winter to make themselves even better. is it not the case that the team with the best record in the league plays the wild card winner in the division series--unless they're in the same division? thus, each team in the nl central could potentially make it to the league championship series to face each other . . . meaning more revenue for each of them. That's what I told him on the 26th: "I feel differently. Until this year 90% of the national TV coverage went to NY, Boston and LA. That means revenue/payroll" It's a no brainer. Keep the bucks in the Central. If the bucks aren't going to the Brewers, it's better that they go outside the division. In any event the central is shaping up to have a good chance to send two teams to the playoffs. Two teams are playing well, two are mediocre and one is terrible. Unless Pitt and Cincy heat up, it means a the Brewers and Cards will be playing more games against teams with sub-par records than teams in other divisions. Of course there is nothing to say that the Brewers won't fall off a cliff (I'd say the Cards too, but when is the last time they've completely tanked?) If that happens there will be a fair chance of just sending one team, or having a different second team going.
  18. Quoting from http://grantland.com/the-triangle/milwaukee-brewers-incredible-2014-start-francisco-rodriguez/ The Brewers already have problems with players who can only play one position, the last thing they need is a guy who can play 0. Juan is a DH, and the NL doesn't use a DH.
  19. DL him in July, give him 2-3 weeks off, Send him to AA for 30 days(aug) , bring him back up Sept 1 to basically sit/pitch blow outs He would have to actually be injured. Kind of hard when he almost never pitches. He can easily pull something dancing. I was hoping he'd look a little better than he has, but he hasn't looked any worse than Wooten this year.
  20. In extra innings, yeah. But I can't remember the last time I saw a position player pitch in the eighth. It's very rare in extra innings, because teams are trying to win and a position player won't give you good odds for winning. It is most common in the 8th or 9th of a blowout, especially when the pen is already taxed.
  21. Half the starting lineup out, extra innings without a bench to speak of, and they still won. They really had no business winning a game like this. If there was any way to make an April win sweeter than yesterday, this was it.
  22. And no Lucroy either? I understand needing a day after catching 12 innings (and hope it is only that), but yikes that is a weak lineup. If Lohse pulls out a 9 inning shutout, they have a chance.
  23. Forecast looks to be the worst possible - they will likely get the game in, but a chance for rain delays. They really need a flat-out, call it well before game time rain-out. Failing that, they need about 8 innings from Lohse.
