  1. #4 IMO is a huge part of it, particularly the walks. even the hit batters. Sunday for example, Burnes has two out w/two strikes on the hitter then hits him. No big deal, except that's followed by an 8-or-9 pitch AB & walk. So now you're facing two extra hitters. You could easily make the argument the HBP cost him (via pitch count) a full extra inning of work. Multiply that by several games, & it makes a huge difference not only in runs given up but in the BP workload, and in who you have to use & when. That stuff just filters down & affects the whole staff more than people realize. Agree w/ the Adames comments. He seems to "get it" as far as his approach, then after a couple ABs backslides again. Whenever I hear one of the "most HRs by a shortstop in MLB" comments I want to throw something. It's the mentality of over-valuing something like that that I fear leaks into his consciousness & causes the wild inconsistencies. As to #5, I think it's the players who need to move on. Hard as it may be to put behind you the feelings of confusion or disagreement with the trade, it's mandatory if you want to accomplish anything. It's (probably) already cost them a week of bad baseball. Reporters & (some) fans moving on, good luck with that. Sometimes you just gotta ignore stuff.
  2. Is there room to add him to the 40? I'd rather see Feliciano get work at AAA then sit up here.
  3. As far as discernable trade value, I suspect the last few days answered that. I too hope he does well, but I'm having trouble seeing how he fits other than a PH. And a couple of the prime candidates to be PH for will be pulled when a lefty takes the mound, hardly a matchup Keston's thrived in. I can see him taking some DH ABs, I'm just not sure how many.
  4. Using that analogy, I'd say a 3B or HR with Gasser, and 2B or 3B with Ruiz. But your opening sentence said it all. I feel there's a good chance Ruiz is up here anywhere btwn the next week to 9-1, hopefully the earlier end of that window. Maybe he values these guys enough that he didn't want to take the chance of Preller dealing them elsewhere in the offseason if/when his team fails again & he makes another bunch of Monopoly moves.
  5. RR's beards' theory could explain a lot of this. They may have held out for Gasser & Ruiz after being offered something different. Because bottom line, they didn't HAVE to move now on Hader but they did. And it's safe to assume there were other offers.
  6. We've seen many examples over the years that this is a "stay the course, big picture" type of organization. It's served them well overall. In this case, they wanted to somehow, someway at least get to September 1st w/o having to make a move on any of these catchers. Then you have a couple extra roster spots to play with & keeping them all is less cumbersome. It's like last nights' AB by Severino was the last straw. They're showing some urgency, which is interesting because it's so unlike their usual MO.
  7. I sense a little more urgency than they usually show. They just jettisoned Severino, and it was obvious they really didn't want to up until now.
  8. My gut tells me you'll get your wish if he lights up Nashville in the next handful of days. Same can be said for Frelick.
  9. It seemed to be getting closer & closer to the time they had to let go of Severino, whether they liked it or not. Didn't expect it today though. Guess that bases-loaded K really cost him lol. I'm seeing Hiura as a PH & occasional DH, don't know what else they can do with him. We'll see.
  10. Agree. I gave them A "C". The more I hear about Ruiz the more I like him. We just don't know if he'll pay dividends in the next two months. Tim spelled it out well when he pointed out what happened last night. Tellez & Wong need to be hit for late vs LHP when you're trailing? OK, so be it. But then you can't afford to have the 3 catchers. Like I said in another thread, this 80-game thing with Severino screwed up the roster royally. It wasn't some one-or-two-week thing, so they felt they needed to go get someone. And with Narvaez hitting FA they want to keep all three. Of course, you also have to have 37 guys in your bullpen (slight exaggeration?). It's just a real dis-jointed roster. I would've loved Drury. The 18-yr-old SS, I know nothing about him but he was the Padres' #6 prospect. Not sure how that equates to our system but it tells me the price probably would've been too high for our taste. Certainly there were other possibilities; I'd love to know what some of the offers were/would've needed to be. Too late now. We need Adames & Urias to give us more, Wong to keep hitting, and anyone not on the current roster giving us a boost has to be named Ruiz or Frelick. Oh, and the pitching & run-prevention aspect has to hold up it's end better.
  11. I remember as a kid trying to peel the "Bryant" sticker off the batting helmet on the helmet day giveaway. So, no.
  12. Thinking of Yelich in CF with his arm, I have visions of Willie McGee in game 3 of the '82 series, tagging up from 2B on a fly to CF and scoring.

  14. I enjoyed it. Especially liked (playfully) calling out Counsell. "It wasn't 'change our approach''". Yeah, OK Craig.
  15. Theoretically, it should. That's what I like about him. He's the #28 prospect in the SD organization. Unless they have the greatest farm system anyone has seen in decades I think that's a huge miscalculation.
  16. If you're referring to Ruiz, he's split the season btwn AA & AAA, and had a cup of coffee with SD.
  17. I like Ruiz, I think he's underrated. Gasser seems like someone with a ton of potential. Lamet, eh. The only way this seems to offer immediate help is if Ruiz makes an impact in CF. I don't think they're done; picking up a young OFer makes it a little more comfy to deal one (or more) of the Biloxi guys.
  18. The common rhetoric is "The first two strikes are yours, the last one is for the team". I hate that. Trouble is, if you get to "the teams" strike, it means you're usually at a disadvantage in the count & more apt to chase. There ARE times you can, even should, look to ambush, but IMO it's situational.
  19. Which is why I don't think he's that far away. The fact he's playing as well as he is, supercedes AA vs AAA. Still, this organization doesn't skip over AAA very often. If he does, it'll be significant.

  21. I realize Frelick hasn't touched AAA yet, but I think he'll be here before the timeline you propose. Maybe WELL before.
