  1. Smalls' command seems to be getting better. Better than it was, anyway. Of course it needs to continue to go northward for him to have a chance to be a viable option given the avg-at-best fastball. At best he's Brent Suter with a little more velocity. Not what you want from a first-rounder, but there's a role for that.
  2. We sold our house (in Brookfield) a couple months ago. During the 2-day open house, I had to stop by briefly to grab something and the outside was almost like one of those '80s movies where the parents are gone & there's a teen party--cars parked & double-parked, people congregating outside, coming & going through the front door. It's gotten to the point where you're disappointed if you don't get multiple offers & a bidding war ensues. And we wrapped up the deal on the condo we purchased w/o any competition. We're blessed 😇😁.
  3. Since he's still only 26, left-handed & a former 1st-round pick, no we really can't. That doesn't mean you aren't right.
  4. In a word, no. If he settles in & really goes on a hot streak in Biloxi I'd be fine with him getting 3-4 weeks in AAA to finish the season. But even spending the entire season in Biloxi wouldn't bother me, if that were to happen. Let's not forget.............19.
  5. The guys who may have a future here (Gasser, Small) are having command issues & Gasser would a require 40-man roster move anyway, which I suspect they don't want to do. That leaves the Boushley, Junk type promotion and frankly I'd rather see them roll the dice with Teheran for whatever time this is needed.
  6. Good points, but I'm looking at it from the standpoint of run prevention because, well, it's what I do😛. He's by far our best third baseman IMO. We may not have won Sundays' game if he wasn't at third in the final 2 innings. And I actually have no problem rolling with Turang most of the time. Having said all this, I'm sure you'll see him in RF some.
  7. I wonder if that eventually leads to Anderson settling in in RF. I'd understand it as he has the tools to play there but I really like him at 3B.
  8. Guess I mis-judged Varland. I really liked the way he looked early on. To go from there to the point where he clears waivers, never saw that coming.
  9. Without delving into the statistical calculus, I think he's gotten away from consciously looking to go to the opposite field like he was doing earlier in the season. There's a point where looking oppo eventually leads to you getting pitches to pull, but he hadn't gotten to that point yet where he should've changed his approach (if indeed that's what he's doing).
  10. My thinking exactly. If (when) they move away from Adames my assumption has always been it'll be Zamora, Brown or Turang next up, and it's been great to see Zamora perform as he has after a largely lost 2022. I find both Wood & Adams intriguing.
  11. As corner guys go yeah, Black deserves kudos. I'm just not convinced yet as to what position he winds up at defensively. That's why he wasn't on my mental short list. Glad to hear the thumbs up on both Clarke & Warren.
  12. He's worth mention, especially w/the dearth of corner guys in the organization. Wes Clarke & Xavier Warren haven't set the world on fire, although Clarke draws walks & seems to have a propensity to drive in runs. Luke Adams is interesting but a ways off. Alex Binelas was dealt. I'm a Cam Devanney fan, but certainly keeping an eye on Ben.
  13. I don't believe they would regularly use Caratini as a DH w/o another catcher on the roster. I also see no way Urias would supplant Anderson at 3B. THAT might be your revolving DH if Winker never gets untracked-----Urias the primary guy, occasionally giving Anderson or Adames a day off (they then DH). Attractive option? No. That's why Winker isn't going anywhere any time soon. Of course there's always the ultimate coin flip mashing down in Nashville.
  14. Honestly, when I watched him the first week or so of the season the guy I thought of as a comp was Tommy Edman. Of course the league learns, and you go into adjustment and adjust-to-the-adjustment mode. That's what's going on now. SF70 said it well. Looking forward to his continued development.
  15. I thought the poster child for last nights' loss was Burnes giving up a solid smash for a base hit in the 5th. On an 0-2 count. To a guy hitting .042. This is also probably a boring answer, but for all the wailing & whining on here about the offense they've scored ten runs in the last two games, one of which was a Burnes start. And lost both. Unacceptable. Getting ahead & not efficiently putting guys away, that happens. Sometimes you run into plate discipline. But it just seems to me with Burnes (and even Woodruff the past couple years) they'll be cruising & then suddenly fall behind some 8 or 9-hole hitter 3-0. Or like last nite, inexplicably give him something hittable on 0-2. Or starting your evening by giving a four pitch walk to Wade. Some of this just screams intermittent lack of focus to me.
  16. I like Thomas. But with the OFs already in the system I don't see us giving up whatever he might cost as I think he's under control for a couple more years. Personally, I want to see Hiura hit a few more bombs in Nashville so the drum can be beaten to get him back to Milwaukee. Now THAT'S entertainment.
  17. Guys in the clubhouse can now eat off paper plates & drink out of styrofoam cups without the danger of being preached to. Don't underestimate the value of that.
  18. There are obvious holes to Taylors' game but this is why he's a little more valuable than many realize. Wiemer looks OK in CF. In RF he's terrific. Same with Anderson in RF as opposed to 3B. Miller didn't make what was an admittedly tough play tonight playing 3B, and it cost them. Taylor (if available) keeps other folks where they belong if you want your best defensive team out there. Sounds like TT will be available before Frelick. Watching this unfold will be interesting.
  19. I stopped watching Sportscenter many moons ago, then was flipping around one day just as it was starting. Thought I'd give it a try. I made it through maybe 30 seconds of self-promoting & "everyone listen to how clever I am" preening from whoever the host was before turning it off. I watch ESPN if there's a live event I want to see. The rest of their programming is painful.
  20. I thought Davis was slowly starting to turn a corner, but if all are healthy his chances for getting on the field weren't great in '23. I was thinking maybe he'd get some run in the bowl game, but that didn't really happen. Would not be surprised if he wound up at a MAC-level type program & was productive there.
  21. Ninth-grade me was looking forward to shelving school & going to opening day in '73. Of course Mom Nature played her sick joke on everyone & we had to wait several days. I remember quite a bit of snow still shoved out of the way of pedestrians & motorists on game day. I also remember Bernie Brewer going down his slide before the game, demonstrating to the fans what would happen when a Brewer hit a HR. As he made his descent toward the beer stein, snowballs came flying towards him, courtesy of the Orioles bullpen. Bill Parsons started, and IIRC gave up one hit & walked about 83. Or maybe it just seemed that way due to the cold.
  22. When I think of Devanney & his possible impact at the major league level I consider him a 3B. But the way we value versatility I expect he'll still be moved around.
  23. That reminds me of what they used to call "sonic booms". In the 1960s they were caused when the supersonic jets out on maneuvers broke the sound barrier. I thought they were kinda cool. But I was a kid & didn't care whether the windows shattered.
  24. For anyone who's been around long enough to compare the two, are there any similarities between Misiorowski and Nick Neugebauer? I'm a big Tyler Black fan. Hope he can stick at 2B, but his recent usage makes me wonder if that's in the cards. If Mitchell never totally taps into the power but cuts back on the K rate I'll be more than satisfied. There have been very, very few players I can recall that are able to beat out what are more-or-less routine grounders. He's one of them.
  25. Unless the circumstances or event prohibits it, I constantly wear shorts if it's 60s or warmer (in Wisconsin, so that's maybe a little less than half the year?). When we had softball open gyms, we had an ass't coach who would wear shorts throughout the winter. I'm talking going to/from his car, everything.
