  1. Yes, and traditionally some of those institutions have developed a rep for being great landing spots if you're an elite athlete & have no interest in 'playing school'. Gotta admit though, with the advent of online classes I think a lot of other places fit the same mold. As for the subject of paying players, it doesn't hurt if you have a framework & funds already in place and have experience in having done it for years before it became legal. Climate doesn't hurt, either.
  2. I was exaggerating, but as it turns out not by all that much (8-32). The missed Alabama shots from 5 ft & closer might've been an even bigger factor.
  3. Johnny Kinziger of Illinois State just announced for the portal. He's the older brother of Zach Kinziger, one of UW's incoming recruits. I've seen him play for the Redbirds. He's the type of kid that, if you knew nothing about him & watched him for ten minutes, you'd figure he's a coaches' son (which he is). Very smart, heady player, makes great decisions with the ball, Solid shooter, just under 39% from 3pt in his career. Excellent from the FT line. I love guards with his skillset & moxie. The thing is, he's really slight. Listed at 5'11" & 165, and that's probably fudging. I'm not sure how he'd hold up defensively at the high-major level or if he'd be happy with a bench role, which might be his best fit if he came here. The list of schools he's 'considering' includes a bunch of quality mid-majors as well as UW, Illinois & Iowa. Two years left.
  4. Even with the 'home' crowd I was surprised Purdue hung around as well as they did. Once UH went up ten I thought that was it. One of the announcers said Purdue had eleven baskets in the 2nd half & Braden Smith assisted on all of them. If accurate that's incredible. Starting about midway through the 2nd half it looked like Auburn really got their early-season mojo back after a relative lull. Auburn-Florida would be a hell of a semi.
  5. I don't recall this, but I heard mention that we recruited him out of HS. So if he visited & enjoyed it, maybe??
  6. Considering the quality of the MSU guards I was surprised at Ole Miss' ability to disrupt them defensively, especially early. Enjoyable game. Glad for Izzo. Chris Beard is a helluva coach.
  7. It does. But if such a rule were ignored & they had no picks that could rot the organization from the inside out. They would have to bat pretty close to 1.000 on their acquisition decisions. But like I said it's a pipe dream.
  8. I like the unique thought of this. But the first time a deal is proposed by them that the other team would deem beneficial to their organization, it would be hard for that team to turn it down. It would need to be real, unified stone cold collusion. Not realistic, but while fantasizing I've always liked the idea of, if a team goes above a particular payroll amount, they forfeit their participation in the amateur draft the next year. No picks. Still over that amount the next year? Sit out another one. Even better if the draft ever includes internationals.
  9. Morez Johnson of Illinois announced for the portal today. He doesn't fit the mold of having multiple shooters on the floor, but he's a terrific rim protector & I'd love to have him. That said, it smells like strictly a bidding war to me so.......doubtful. Bubu Benjamin of Tarleton State (TX) has heard from UW. He was a scorer at the WAC level. Big guard, which is rumored to be something we might be putting a premium on. After an undistinguished year at Seton Hall, Gus Yalden has decided to once again hit the road. Get in line now. Someone.....anyone??
  10. Jacob Ognacevic is in the portal. 6'8" forward who put up big numbers at Lipscomb. I question exactly how effective he'd be in the B10, but wouldn't be surprised if UW at least kicks the tires. Went to the same HS as Sam Dekker.
  11. Need to get them out of the way tonight so they can go 4 for 31 vs Duke.
  12. Yes. But I would get used to it. Looking at this roster makeup, when a lefty is out there for the opposition I see it happening fairly often if we're trailing.
  13. MD-FLA is shaping up to be one heck of a contest. Agree re Gillespie. He's been a key for them for a long time.
  14. Late in the 1st half, BYU is trailing Alabama by 8, and BYU is shooting 10% from 3pt range. That's just so precious.😒
  15. That's been going on for sooooo long. Umpires that call the 'count' instead of the pitch. Pitcher won't get a similar call once it gets to 0-2 or 1-2. OTOH, you get the call on the 3rd one if it's 2-0. I'm not nuts about robots for ball/strike calls but for this particular problem it's probably the only solution.
  16. That's fair. He's certainly someone you wouldn't mind seeing treating a 3-1 pitch there from DW like it's a 3-0 pitch & watching it.
  17. Just part of a what-else-can-go-wrong day for Chourio. Great location, AND like you said, a strike. Bad throw on the sac fly too. Flush the whole damn day Jackson lol.
  18. I'd have to look at it again. I didn't think it was a big chase when I saw it live. Taking 3-1 regardless wouldn't have been a bad idea though.
  19. the more things change, the more they stay the same. Freddy was very Freddy-ish today, which isn't to say he was bad. Murph just always needs to assume he has to find 12 outs from the pen when he takes the hill. The efficiency I hoped to find as his career unfolded, probably won't happen. Williams fits the same opening comment. Lotsa baserunners & all three outs he recorded came on full counts. Too bad Turang couldn't find green grass; that was a hell of an AB from him. If his spring and the AB he put up today are any indication I think Jake Bauers could be a serviceable LH bench bat. I would say we were victimized by a slightly crooked Judge in the 7th. Or at least a very lucky one. Capra was there for that grounder. Other than that, eh. Neither team swung the bats very well; they chased a little less than we did though. Rodon was very good. I didn't like the Yelich AB early w/Turang at 1st. Probably not running vs a LHP but OTOH don't swing at the 1st pitch. Only 161 left to shake the slump.
  20. I went to my bank today, and to my relief they're handling everything on their end. No need to call. Thanks though.
  21. My state tax refund was deposited in my account promptly, about two weeks ago. While checking my online statements today, I found a second refund check was deposited a couple days ago. It wasn't a duplicate; different amount, different name, the last four digits of the SS # were different. They just deposited this guys' check in my account. Now I get to take a trip to my bank & try mightily to avoid having to call the Department of Revenue & sit on hold for nine days.
  22. Hunter had health issues here. He never quite got untracked. Best of luck to him. We can scratch a couple bigs off the list. Mitchell (Minnesota) has committed to St Bonaventure. He might avg 12 rebounds a game in the A-10. Owen Freeman (Iowa) is headed to Creighton. Another entry UW seems to have some interest in is Amsal Delalic, a big (6'8") guard from Pitt.
  23. I don't know if Mincey would fit a Davis-Storr-Tonje role or not. But whoever Gard pursues to provide scoring from the wing, he has some pretty potent numbers to use as a persuader: AJ Storr 22-23 St Johns 8.8 PPG 23-24 Wisconsin 16.8 PPG* 24-25 Kansas 6.1 PPG *Highest shooting % of the three years as well as highest PPG. John Tonje 2019-23 (4 years) Colorado State 8.6 PPG 24-25 Wisconsin 19.6 PPG
  24. Years ago, I never anticipated the # of high-level HS recruits we now see coming out of Wisconsin. Thanks largely to AAU, the line has been blurred to the extent where home-state allegiance isn't the thing it maybe once was (there are exceptions---Dekker, Stiemsma & Butch could've gone to a lot of places, Johnny Davis was coveted, Zach Kinziger is a 4-star). As you said, perhaps the increase in tempo could tilt that. I'd love to snag Donovan Davis of Freedom HS. I think they'll continue to do pretty well in Minnesota, in the suburbs if not Minneapolis itself.
