  1. Pretty good comps. The intriguing thing is that he's where he is right now with large chunks of time taken out of his development track.
  2. That was a pretty good presser. Besides mentioning how the booing got everyones' attention he talked about the team learning that you can't coast (I'm sure they knew that, but there's nothing like an 8-0 visual aid to pound it home). Maybe a veteran team would hear the booing & respond with a mental middle finger, This is a good group to have their sensibilities jolted, I think. He also talked about Montas tipping his pitch grip to runners on 2nd. If true that's pretty bad. Also his failure to back up 3rd base. You really have to wonder about how high Mitchells' ceiling is . On his second AB, coming up against a lefty, running the count full & then hitting one--hard--to the opposite field was to me one of the most impressive ABs of the game. OTOH, trying to steal on a 3-0 count, even if you AREN'T down by a few runs, is curious to say the least. Damn, Sanchez had a bad game behind the dish. Really bad. Apparently, any 'double tick' you hear is a foul tip. Bat to glove, glove to shin guard, cup to shin guard, mask to beer vendor-------Maybe we want to revisit that not being reviewable. At the end of the day a real "thanks, I needed that" win.
  3. Many downright deplorable at-bats the last few days, Kinda understandable given the circumstances of the respective teams. Not the end of the world, but on the other hand I wasn't in the stands spending money to watch it. Agree that it's time to let some preparation & professionalism creep back in during the next week. They miss Skenes. That doesn't hurt.
  4. I'll take the former because while many people think that strategy prevents you from reaching the WS, it's just not true (as you alluded to w/TB). "Bites of the apple" has become some sort of negative term to a lot of fans, & IMO shouldn't be.
  5. For all the position player talent on the farm Black was the only 'prospect' type that was imminent for the big league club this year. When he didn't impress, we were left with AAAA types.
  6. Pretty similar hitters. If they had close to the same # of ABs I think you'd find Haase would show a lot more swing and miss than Sanchez. Between the two they're going with the more proven bat, which I can understand.
  7. Probably a dumb analogy but there was a kids' board game years ago called Chutes & Ladders. if you landed on a lucky space, you got to climb a ladder & jumped ahead several spaces from where you'd otherwise be. I think of that when seeing where this team is right now. Great personnel moves, nice performances from some unexpected sources, but to get twenty-some games over .500 at this point w/o Yelich or a clear-cut #1 starter they jumped a ladder or two. Which is a lot of fun. Now we need to see some late season, nothing-to-lose hunger.
  8. Just a lot of good ABs tonite from a team playing for its' postseason life. Frustrating because it's our opponent, but very impressive. Some hard contact, lots of soft contact that went their way, & decent pitches fouled off w/very little chasing. I think the bases loaded walk by Koenig was a good example. He turned in good work there but the AB was simply better. I don't know if we chased an inordinate amount of the time, but compared to the D-Backs work at the plate it looked ugly. When they mix in the seeing-eye stuff, that's a difficult lineup to get through.
  9. His good command when first coming over here was largely smoke & mirrors. He's never been real good at limiting walks. I have a feeling the off day on Monday is when we'll see some decisions made regarding what the October roster might look like. I don't think Monasterio is in danger, but Collins hasn't looked particularly good at the plate. Limited options though.
  10. I figured there would be some of that on the board tonight, and you might be right. And I realize this sounds like an excuse but Pfaadt was NOTHING like the guy we saw last weekend. He was awfully good. And I don't know if Monasterio makes the play on a charge & in-between hop even if he sat with a mug of Ovaltine last night; he just isn't that strong of a defender. We most likely weren't as 'ready to play' as usual. But I think Pfaadt was the biggest factor.
  11. I mentioned awhile back how many of their games recently, many of them wins, are the type they'd most likely see in the post-season. Tonight was that type in many ways with one exception---you can't flinch. Walking the 8 & 9 hitters leading off an inning, that's flinching. We saw very, very few good ABs tonight but Pfaadt was locating almost perfectly, which was quite surprising given what we saw last week.
  12. Given Blacks' so-so at best debut in Milwaukee & the way Martinez finished up the season in a league that's far from hitter-friendly, I suspect they find a way to add him to the 40 although it may be stretching it a bit to imagine him heading north to start the season. OTOH the glove is there & we know how much the Brewers value that, and in over 2.5 months in that league, K'ing at about a 14% rate with that long of a swing IS pretty impressive.
  13. AFA who plays SS today I think you put Monasterio wherever he's most comfortable, either short or 3rd. Ortiz is good either way. Definitely leave Turang at 2B if he's playing. After his well-deserved break, let's get Adames back on track. He had a real ugly series at the dish, although he stayed on the ball & drove one to RC late, and walking in the 9th after starting 0-2 was incredibly impressive. You just don't want to see him cultivating one of his "chase the bad curves & sliders" stretches at this point. I wonder if there's a thought process going on re Collins' roster spot. He profiles pretty well for the role he's in & I advocated for his promotion, but I'd like to see what he can do with a handful of ABs in the next week. Otherwise Capra has similar versatility & is almost certainly a better glove man.
  14. IMO the 'run prevention' model they've adhered to is so damned impressive. And the lions' share of the credit for that goes to the uncanny ability this organization has to tweak, probe, & realign pitchers to get full performance. Not only the way Civale & Montas have performed since coming over, but if on March 30th people would've been told we'd need important innings from Tobias Myers, Koenig, Ross, Megill, Hudson, Ashby, there would be a lot of furrowed brows. And with the glove, guys like Turang, Perkins, Frelick & Ortiz are just so unflappable, even on game-changing plays. I think you're right about losing some coaches eventually. I mean, how can they not, unless the rest of MLB isn't paying attention. I just hope they put guard dogs, alarm sensors & a big, deep moat complete with sharks around that pitching lab.
  15. Heck, I'm a Cards & Reds fan for the last eleven games. Let's see 'em drop to 4th.🦌.
  16. It would've been nice to win & then celebrate, but there's something sort of full circle-ish about clinching by Craig Counsells' team failing today.
  17. With many different candidates jockeying for the available playoff starts it'll be interesting to see how Peralta performs vs some of these strong lineups. A lot of 'typical Freddy' last time out but showed some moxie in getting through five in the desert. It'll probably continue to be two steps forward, step-and-a-half back, but I really liked the look of Garrett Mitchells' ABs yesterday--even the ones that didn't result in base hits. The production he's provided is intriguing considering the inconsistencies & injury disruptions. It'll be fun to see exactly what his ceiling is.
  18. Just to make Sveumrules' point clear, that 26-29 isn't vs the entire NL, just the NL East & West. Also, I was glad to see Perkins bumped to 2nd in the order vs the LH last night behind Chourio. Makes the most sense if Chourio is leading off. And tucking Mitchell in btwn Contreras & Adames vs righties isn't a bad idea either.
  19. Don't give them any ideas lol.
  20. I think the hand placement for Turang gets a little wonky at times, and since pulling the ball isn't a constant part of what he does you'd think things would be simple enough that he wouldn't get screwed up. I'm just glad he's heating up & hope it continues. Frelick, I just want him to spray the ball & let natural growth & experience kind of take over AFA driving the ball is concerned. He'll never be a power guy but DOES seem to be getting out in front a little bit more. Agree about his back foot. Bauers just seems to have his (limited) stretches where he picks the ball up well. When that happens he'll put up some lengthy ABs, hit a few HRs & draw some walks. Then it goes away. If only he could bottle it you'd have a .240 hitter with some pop that would be a great PH option when not in the lineup. Sort of a LH Sanchez. As is, you take the defense & I guess just hope for one of the good stretches.
  21. Among corner INF types, we've witnessed the so-so (at best) MLB debut of Tyler Black, seen occasional waves from the big HR, big K bat (Wes Clarke), followed the tough luck, ball-to-the-face season of Brock Wilkin, seen Mike Boeve hit like the dickens when he was available, and been intrigued by the overall offensive skillset of Luke Adams. Through all this, I must admit Ernesto Martinez has flown under the radar for me. A 6-5, 250lb guy who has put together nice numbers, stolen some bags & even was athletic enough to play a bit of CF is pretty intriguing. I'd love to hear from some of you who have seen much more of Biloxi than I have, what you think of the guy & his ceiling. Thanks!!!
  22. Shoulda saw this coming re Rea, with them using six starters. The 'his day to throw' guy could pick up an inning or two (didn't expect 2.2 though). I thought Milner was pretty good. No real hard contact but the HBP was untimely & shouldn't happen. He pretty much HAD to be used tonight. Nice job. I understood Turang squaring w/the runner on 3rd since it was a LHP, but I wouldn't have done it since he's starting to see the ball pretty well now. The butcher boy they switched to was a great call with the way Harper was crashing, just didn't get a good enough piece of the ball. I had a Charlie Moore-ALCS flashback watching Frelick charge & throw to 3rd. Boy it's fun when the bottom 2-3 spots get on base. I think it was Rottino who mentioned 'launch angle-itis' or something like that regarding Adames tonight. Yeah, good call but understandable the way the ball's been flying for him. Stay within yourself, young man. I think we've played this team really well through four meetings, outs at the plate in Philly notwithstanding.
  23. ESPN Madison has reported that Tyler Van Dyke will miss the remainder of the season w/a "significant knee injury". I hoped for the best but this isn't all that surprising. So you have Locke, who has a decent amount of experience from last year. But he isn't mobile or particularly big, and due to that sidearm-type delivery I suspect all opposing D-lineman will have a few days of 'get your hands up' drills when it's UW prep week. I think Mabrey Mettauer has a chance to be effective at some point, but this doesn't strike me as the type of system that's friendly to a QB who was at his HS prom four months ago. They would be well-served to find out exactly how much they can lean on the offensive line moving forward.
  24. I felt we played them pretty well in Philadelphia throughout that series, except we didn't hit the first two games, made much better contact in game three but couldn't buy a break on batted balls, and all week sent people on contact plays that pretty much every other team would've sent but Philly wound up having a play at the plate every time as the batted ball placement/fielders' placement worked against us like, every time.. I hope we come out finding that sweet spot between being confident & yet still relaxed. For whatever reason that seems to sometimes elude them at home.
