  1. CC's comments via Deadspin Apparently, Sabathia was concerned that his adventures in Milwaukee last year were so incredibly awesome that Brewers fans would have had some unreasonable expectations for his performance were he to return. So in order to avoid the uncomfortable situation of being expected to deliver superhuman feats, he took the largest free agent pitching contract in history and moved to New York City. ""If I had gone back to Milwaukee, they would have been looking to me to win every single game. I expect to win every single game here, too, but there would have been more immense pressure there because they wouldn't have been able to put the pieces around me to help me win. I think I can get that here.... If I had went somewhere else, they would have expected me to do what I did the last second half in Milwaukee and you know that's kinda unrealistic."
  2. Maybe Melvin realizes what a boneheaded move it was to sign Suppan because now Suppan is hamstringing this team and who they can pursue. It seems to me that maybe Melvin does not want to get into that same situation with anther player or pitcher and he is passing. Although many here seem to want Doug to give someone like Randy Wolf or Jon Garland 10-12 million a year just for the sake of having something to talk about. The Julio/Nixon/Lamb moves are safe and cheap and if only one works out it looks brilliant, and if none work out nobody will remember them because we invested zero in signing them.
  3. All is calm and peaceful in OshVegas. I was going to try to stay up until it started, but now I am not sure it is ever going to.
  4. Nixon might be washed up, he might be as good as Geoff Jenkins in 2009, he could be this years Gape Kapler. The bottom line is, this move costs the Brewers nothing, and if we can fill our bench with a productive LH bat, it might, MIGHT allow us to sign a top tier pitching FA or hitting FA.
  5. Better than the Gabe Grapler platoon we had last year.
  6. I used to be a big Trot Nixon fan. but then I went to college, got married, went to law school and had three kids. I think if he faces strictly RH pitching and he is healthy that he could be a good bet to be decent. He will probably be as good as Geoff Jenkins this year, but NOT make 5 million a year. Im not all that thrilled with Chris Duffy though.
  7. Sounds to me like a Corey Hart for Kelly Johnson swap was turned down by the BRewers. I gleamed that from MLBtradrumors post.
  8. It is hard to reconcile the belief on this website that Ben Sheets is a bum and we are better off without him and at the same time saying that Yovani Gallardo most likely isnt as good as or cannot replace what Sheets did last year. I know there are hundreds of active posters on this site, but we have to be objective here. Last year Sheets threw 198 innings, went 13-9 with a 3.09 ERA and a 3:1 K:BB ratio and a WHIP of 1.15. So far in his very short career Gallardo has tossed 134 innings with a 3.35 ERA and a 2.5:1 K:BB ratio with a WHIP of 1.26. I think when you look at Gallardo's minor league stats it is perfectly reasonable to project Gallardo to put up a line similar to what Sheets did last year assuming he pitches 200 innings. Now we have to replace CC's second half. Improvement by Parra and Bush over the entire year COULD close the gap somewhat and perhaps - PERHAPS a more consistent and BETTER offense could pick up the rest. I just dont see how this team, as currently constructed is NOT in the 85-89 win territory it needs to be in to challange for a WC spot.

  13. Are Hollandsworth and Ledee still in baseball? Or is that part of the joke? The logical replacements being two guys who are LH and who have been out of baseball? A check reveals Todd Hollandsworth has not played since 2006 and Ledee since 2007.

  17. This is the same team that was above .500 and in command of the Wild Card for most of the season BEFORE they obtained Sabathia. Now we plug in Gallardo for SHeets and we are an under .500 ball club? I maintain that Ben Sheets had a good first half and Sabathia had a great second half. Sheets was average or hurt in the second half of the season and we didnt have Sabathia in the first half. So we need to replace 3 half season of pitching. One good, one great, one average. If Gallarado is healthy the entire season I believe he will produce 75% of what Sheets and Sabathia did last year, essentially have a good first half and good second half. I also think that an improved Parra and more consistent Dave Bush can cover the other 25%.
  18. Was it Clark Howard on WTMJ in the afternoon? I was channel surfing while driving around and caught him talking about Firefox and Chrome and how his assitant or program director or whomever ONLY ever uses IE but that now she was being "forced" to switch....
  19. I am one of Ben's biggest fans and I want to resign him, and even part of me doesnt know if I can stand listening to another two or three years of fans calling him brittle Ben or the like.
  20. I also dont think they get credit for Abreu since they did not offer him arbitration.
  21. Update on the Sheets Watch via MLBtraderumors.com According to SI.com's Jon Heyman: There's no evidence Ben Sheets has received any proposals for two years or more yet, though he's drawing interest from at least the Rangers and Yankees, and very likely his old Brewers team, as well. As Heyman says, Sheets' timing was terrible. If his flexor tendon injury had occurred in April and he finished the season strong, he might've been looking at three or four years. Instead, the lingering memory of the September injury had a huge effect on his market despite the fact that he made 31 starts in 2008. Heyman says the Yankees may wait to bid on Sheets until they hear Andy Pettitte's decision. As Sheets is a Type A free agent offered arbitration, the Brewers could swipe a first-round pick if he signs elsewhere. Assuming they can't sign him, they have to be rooting for a new team to jump into the fray since they wouldn't get a first-round pick from the Rangers or Yankees.
  22. This is getting ridiculous. Only 3+ months of this crap left.
  23. That is all true, but he will play half of his games in NY vs. half of his games in LA or SF or MIL wherever in his heart of hearts he really wanted to be. That has to be close to 90 days when you include off days and the such. He will also play the other half of his games in the AL, where he indicated he would rather not have been in because he enjoys hitting. He will pitch a schedule that is more East Coast driven being in the AL East with unbalanced scheduling, rather than the West Coast in the NL West and unbalanced scheduling. The spring training issue is irrelevant as he will be in Florida or AZ no matter what he chooses. I was just saying, that the difference between 160 million and 100 million is negligible even if you were previously making $50,00 a year and living pay check to pay check or making 10 million a year for the previous 4 years. To make it sound like human nature is to sacrifice what you may really want to make an additional amount of money that in the end does not really matter isnt as true as Russ makes it sound.
  24. I will disagree with this. You offer me 100 million to work and live where I want to, or 160 million to work and live where you want me to and I will gladly take the 100 million for happiness and my own freedom.
  25. Id worry that JJ Hardy it to good to make move like this. In other words, JJ is going to command major dollars on the FA market if he has two years similar to his last two and who would we have to fill that hole? Now that might be a problem we solve when it comes up in two years and dont worry about it now, but it would increase the payroll for Peavy's salary and JJ's increases. Also, this rumor holds no credibility with me at all.
