  1. I remember on the weekend before my birthday (which is 12/13) when I was in college, fishing in the Mississippi (must have been 1998) and almost, almost taking off my shirt because it was so warm in the sun that day. A check on weatherunderground.com confirms that it was indeed 66 degrees on December 5, 1998, and 55 degrees on December 14, 1998.
  2. This isnt looking good. Snow every other day and sub zero temps...before Xmas? Could it be possible this winter will be WORSE than last year?
  3. So pretty much every player than can hit is a DH these days. Dunn, Abreu, Fielder....in house options Salome, Gamel. Whatever happened to guys, I dont know, playing defense? So frustrating not being able to compete with AL clubs for good hitters. It is no wonder the AL has been dominant the past 12 years.
  4. Whoops. Looks like we got caught sitting on our hands waiting (still) for Sabathia to officially turn us down. I wonder how many other opportunities will come and go while we wait for CC to say no thanks.
  5. I always thought the drummer was the most talented in the band, and the most irreplaceable (outside of Dave). I listened to them religiously from about 1995-2003, but havent really listened to them at all in the past 5 years. I think I grew out of them. They are all great talents, and I always liked Moore's part in the band, but I think he is the most replaceable...although I dont think Jeff Coffin will be as cool looking on stage.
  6. Canton is a joke. Someone was running his mouth about how Kurt Warner is a Hall of Fame QB and I laughed and said not a chance. He then challenged me to name one QB who has had a better career than Warner that was NOT in the Hall and I could only come up with Randall Cunningham, and that is debatable.
  7. I was going to mention DMB and LeRoi Moore, but then I didnt want anyone to know that I listened to DMB. (I dont anymore, honest.)
  8. To be honest, we have Hart for three more seasons in RF, and he has shown that he isnt ready to sign an extension. To me this is an easy call. Id sign Abreu to a 2 year deal with a mutual option for a third and trade Corey HArt for a pitching prospect. Corey Hart, for all his warts this past season was an all star, is fast, young, cheap, etc. etc. Maybe trade HIM to the Yankees for a pitcher, or the Giants for Johnathon Sanchez. Id rather have Abreu in RF than Hart.
  9. Smashing Pumpkins are on tour right now, I think, and consist of Corgan and maybe Chamberlin. Iha and D'arcy have left. Dont know if that is Smashing Pumpkins or not. Id say they, along with GnR are a good test case for bands that still have the frontman but are not really the same band. Foo Fighters have had a revolving door at guitar since their inception, but since the first album was Grohl playing all of the instruments anyway, I dont know if the rest of them really count, although Nate Mendel has been there all along and Taylor Hawkins since The Colour and The Shape. REM lost Bill Berry a few years back, but to me they are still REM, even though their music has been pretty stagnant since Up was released. Years ago, the first time Weiland went into the pokie/rehab the rest of STP took on a new lead singer (Dave Couts?) and called themselves Talk Show. They were pretty bad. Pearl Jam has gone through their fair share of drummers before landing a great on in Matt Cameron (soundgarden)
  10. Heh. Nice to see that after 15K votes that not a single player has the requisite 75% to get in in that poll.
  11. Yeah there was a brutal run between Thanksgiving and Xmas, after that things settled back to normal, but I remember shoveling my driveway with drifts on either side at my waist to shoulders.
  12. I take it you dont shovel your own walk or driveway? Last winter was brutal. Rivaled in recent memory only by the winter of 2000-2001. Just about the entire state was near setting a record for snowfall.
  13. Id make Abreu target #1 for the offensive fix.
  14. If you had one, who would be on it? 2009 candidates • Harold Baines • Jay Bell • Bert Blyleven • David Cone • Andre Dawson • Ron Gant • Mark Grace • Rickey Henderson • Tommy John • Don Mattingly • Mark McGwire • Jack Morris • Dale Murphy • Jesse Orosco • Dave Parker • Dan Plesac • Tim Raines • Jim Rice • Lee Smith • Alan Trammell • Greg Vaughn • Mo Vaughn • Matt Williams I am going to go with Jim Rice, Bert Blyleven, Ricky Henderson and upon further review Tim Raines.
  15. I have gone back and forth on Mussina. I initially placed him in the Burt Blyleven Hall of Fame of Very good but not great pitchers (along with Jack Morris) but on closer inspection and taking the era into account I think he is in. The better question might be is he a Yankee or an Oriole in the Hall? 8 full years for the O's, 8 full years for the Yanks. Just glancing at the stats it seems obvious he would go in as an Oriole as half of his years in NY he was the definition of average, while he was dominant in his 8+ years in Baltimore.
  16. Ken Griffey Jr for right field anyone? A two year deal to finish out his career in Milwaukee? Even if you get 400 ABs and a .250/.350/.450 out of him he'd be a nice balance to the lineup. I dont know, maybe it is the 13 year old in me that is wanting Junior to come to Milwaukee.
  17. All of this for a second round sandwich pick? No thanks, unless the Brewers truly want (or wouldnt mind having) him back, which I cannot believe they do.
  18. For the record, if Gagne is a Type B Free Agent no team will have to give up a draft pick. I believe the rule change was that a team that loses a type B free agent only gets a comp pick between rounds 2 and 3 and the signing team no longer loses a 2nd round pick.
  19. I tried taking my kids sledding in this stuff and it was like playing in a puddle.
  20. we got pounded on 12/1 the past two years. Assuming it snows through the night and into the morning commute, this will make 3 in a row.
  21. I will also say that Civics and Accords are great (like them better than Toyota) but I agree that their owners think they are sitting on a pile of gold. I actually knew someone who bought a used Civic for about what it was worth, drove it for a year and resold it for $50 more than he paid for it. In other words, buying a used Civic is going to cost a lot compared to other similar cars of the same model year and class.
  22. Out with the "we got Yosted" after Ned blows one, in with the "He got Swindled" after RJ strikes 'em out.
  23. What about the 2007 Nissan Sentra? I got one of those a year ago and I am really happy with it. 2007 was the first year of the new body design and I think they look sharp.
  24. Wow that would stink. I have heard few PBP announcers who are as good as calling play by play and as knowledgeable about the inner workings of a team as Powell. From the field to the minor leagues, he is top notch and really takes his job seriously.
