  1. Woke up to wet heavy snow here in Oshkosh. At least 3 inches. It was not fun to shovel.
  2. Ok so after enduring months of below average temps last winter, we are not off to a good start this year. Seems for the past 2 weeks we have been consistently 5-15 degrees below normal. Are we in for another long and cold winter?
  3. Loge Infield Box. Love those seats.
  4. Loge Infield Box. Love those seats.
  5. I wonder if back before teh internetz people were asking things like "anyone think Cecil Cooper could catch?" or anyone think Gorman Thomas can play short? We are all guilty of the video game baseball mentality (including me sometimes) of playing guys anywhere we have a hole. It just does not work that way.
  6. As mentioned above, he fits perfectly into the Burt Blyleven/Jack Morris category. Im sure in 20 years ESPN will be interviewing him about how long he has been shafted by HOF.
  7. Those are nothing compared to Coors splits. Often times with Coors you will see splits in the upper 900s and upper to mid 600s. Most players play better at home and .80 points isnt huge, especially since most of that is BA and most likely BABIP.
  8. Take the Haudricourt test. Playoff team? Check Toss out the first four months of stats? Check Gritty in September? Check Winner Winner Chicken Dinner.
  9. The better question is, would anyone be upset if he was selected and not given back? Say he gets selected by a team like the Mariners, pitchers out of the bullpen for all of April and May, gets "hurt" and goes on the DL until september and then pitches all of SEptember for them with rosters expand. That at least seems plausible. If that happens, would anyone be upset? If the answer is no, then he should not be protected. and I agree with Toby that even if the answer is yes that we should probably not protect him, but why deal with that question if nobody cares if he goes.
  10. Baseball players in general being overpaid isnt an issue, it is who is paid what relative to production. If guys like McClung are around and they can give you a 4.90 ERA over the course of a year and are available for $1-$2 million and on a year-to-year basis, why would anyone pay an older player guaranteed $13-14 million per year for 3-4 years to put up a 4.75 ERA. It is just silly, but it happens every year. Like I said, give me Sabathia and McClung ($25 million total?) over Suppan and Garland ($25 million total?) any day.
  11. I'd guess if we dont put him on the 40 man that he would be gone. A team that has an outlook of 60-65 wins next year has nothing to lose by stashing him in the bullpen and giving him garbage time innings. They'd be able to keep his work load down, give him tons of rest and get to see him against major league quality players. If it doesnt work out, then boo-hoo it costs them $25k. Unless he cant bring heat any more (which is possible I suppose) then the upside for a top 5 pick is way to high to pass up.
  12. YanksFan, in your opinion, would the Yankees go 10yrs/300million if Sabathia told them that is what it would take?
  13. Wow, TH, that is a horrible ballot. Sure, MVP may not be most outstanding player, but the Cards were in it for most of the year due to a large part of Albert Pujols. What an embarrassment.
  14. I usually slide the frozen meat under my mattress before I go to bed, and when I wake up it is nice and thawed out. Then I stick it in the fridge before I leave for work and come home and cook it up.
  15. I was on board with 24 at Season 1, Episode 1 and didnt miss an episode until about the middle of the 5th season. I was as big a fan as anyone, but it is time for the show to end.
  16. Which is why players like Sabathia and Sheets should not be viewed as expensive. An ERA of 2.90 vs. 4.75 is a large difference in talent, but if one of those guys gets 22 million (sabathia) or 15 million (Sheets) why pay Garland 13 million? This is what I dont understand about baseball economics. There really should be no reason that guys like Garland get paid what they do. I would think that if GMs just applied themselves a little more that they could find similar talent of much, much, less thereby freeing up money for the real talent.
  17. Wow, maybe Ryan Howard will be a Type B Free agent by the time he is a Free Agent. He just barely qualifies as a Type A.
  18. I doubt the Brewers sign any potential Type A free agents before December 1st, the last day for a team to offer salary arbitration.
  19. I'd rather the Brewers play every game with cats in their pants than pay someone like Garland 12-14 million over 3-5 years. That would be wonderful to run Suppan and Garland out there on back to back nights while paying them more than Sabathia is making. I'd rather run out Sabathia and McClung for the same amount.
  20. It's the White Sox, why not insert Gwynn Jr. into the proposal and keep Cameron. If they want athletes with speed and defense, he fits the bill and they already gave us Carlos Lee for Scott Podsednik, so I wouldnt put it past Williams. Although, talk to any Sox fan and that was the deal that got them their WS ring, so maybe we lost that deal after all.
  21. I predict the first "signing" being Sheets accepting arbitration on December 7th. While a deal wont be done at that point, he will be the Brewers property.
  22. Good for him, what a bounce back year. It was close between he and Halladay, I would not have been upset if either won.
  23. Exactly, so why would they make that offer? I wasnt saying that should offer it, only that there are a bunch of reasons why they would not have. They wouldnt offer it because he me may go for much less than that. I believe 5 yrs at 15 million per was NDOGs suggestion (unless I misread, in which case I apologize). The fact is, it only takes one team to make an offer of 15 million over 5 years. If he stays healthy, it is likely to be a bargain deal.
  24. NDOG, its all about PR. Right now, the Brewers have the best offer on the table for CC Sabathia, and even though it is because no other team can make an offer, it still looks good. Wow, the average fan thinks, we are offering him Johan Santana type cash, impressive. Now, if we waited to make an offer until after the Yankees pitched 6 years 150 million, the fans would be upset that we offered something so far below the current offer. If we made no offer before FA and no offer after, then it is "same ole Brewers" that fans love the chant. The timing and amount of the CC offer is all about PR. Sheets is exactly the opposite. Why offer him 5/75 before free agency when you know darn well he wont take it anyway and you now just gave him an offer for others to match or beat on the open market. Who knows what Ben's value is on the market. Some GMs surely think Burnett, Lowe and Garland are better targets for lots of crazy reasons. Why offer 5/75 when the market may dictate that he accept arbitration? Or take a 3/45deal or 2/30?? No reason to offer a contract to Sheets now. And if he did accept (which he never would) then Melvin gets lambasted for prioritizing Sheets over Sabathia.
  25. It doesnt bother me that the Yankees can afford to toss that kind of money at CC Sabathia, and we cannot. What bothers me is that the Yankees can, and do toss that money around at players and if the player stinks (Giambi) or gets hurt (Pavano) or both (Jaret Wright) it has no effect on their payroll or ability to pay other players. That is where the inequity lies. There are no consequences for the Yankees.
