  1. I guess I really shouldnt have gotten my hopes up thinking about things like playoffs. Oh well.
  2. Since alot of the seats in which Cubs fans were in were pretty good, Im guessing that some of the people were season ticket holders through the David Manning era. I cant really question thier dedication.
  3. My buddies have had me go put drinks on their tabs for them a time or two on water and I always found it odd that there was no verification. I just said the name and they put it on the tab.
  4. Well if it is anything like MSOE it isnt as bad as it first comes off. When you get accepted, you get a scholarship of like 10 grand a year and only lose it if you slack off with grades. Plus its easier to get done in 4 years which means you are out making money while others are going deeper into debt. Still alot of money, but you can work internships during the summer and jobs during school to help keep the debt down.
  5. This year has been the worse for health of fantasy team. Add him to Buchholz, Chris Young, David Ortiz, Travis Hafner, Rickie Weeks. Thank god for Hamilton and Berkman.
  6. "It costs you 5 million dollars per year to develop a player" -Steve Phillips Does that seem alittle exagerated to anyone else?
  7. I would hope if this organization can get something of value (inman), they would consider it. Hart and Kapler can play center if something happens to Cameron. Counsell and Gwynn are similar hitters. Gwynn will hit for a better average (thus slug more), but Counsell has more defensive versatility and less perceived value around the league. Nelson (or Branyan) would add a different dimension (power vs. a righty) to the bench. Counsell: OBP/SLUG Bill James .331/.318 CHONE .330/.330 Marcel .328/.350 ZiPS .307/.315 Gwynn: OBP/SLUG Bill James .329/.335 CHONE .320/.380 Marcel .331/.388 ZiPS .325/.328
  8. Nope, unless your great grandfather was John Deere, it probably is not the same company. I think I will probably get a one bedroom apartment in Cedar Falls for now. Thanks AJ, I will probably send you an email after I see the place and get more specific questions. Just one question now, you know a good place to take my girlfriend out to dinner when I visit (she doesnt like sea food and pork)? I'm trying to sell her on it, and for some reason she just isn't ecstatic about me moving 4 and a half hours away.
  9. Thanks for the responses. The company is willing to pay for me to visit before I sign, so I am going to do that, but it would have to be pretty bad for me to say no at this point. The drive from Dubuque to Waterloo is very, very boring. That is what I've heard. And my girlfriend will still be going to school in Milwaukee (plus my family is still here), so I will probably be making that drive a lot. Maybe I will get a motorcycle to make the drive more enjoyable/affordable.
  10. I received an offer from a company to move to Waterloo. I really like the company and enjoyed the interview experience with them and the job seems like a fantastic opportunity. The offer is more than everything I want. However, I have never been to Waterloo. I can get over the countryness (im not from a cosmopolitan area my self), but I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the area. Any experience on living away from family getting out of college might be helpful too.
  11. Krivsky saw their farm system go from 30 to 3 in baseball america rankings under his watch. Whether he is responsible or not he had the Reds on the right path. Seems like an odd time to make this move.
  12. Player Currently Bill James CHONE Marcel MINOR ZIPs Adam Wainwirght 2.78 4.06 3.95 3.87 4.23 4.13 Kyle Lohse 1.48 4.55 4.70 4.69 4.67 4.78 Braden Looper 2.70 3.98 4.30 4.53 4.65 4.84 Todd Wellemeyer 4.00 4.56 4.39 4.62 4.78 4.44 Brad Thompson 3.21 4.62 4.46 4.54 4.78 5.15 I'm just going to go ahead and join the Cardinals skeptics on this one.
  13. Wainwright is out OPSing the Brewers tonight 5.000 to .000.
  14. 2.4 million dollars saved I would assume. That is a first round draft pick bonus money. Edit: nevermind I misread it; I honestly have no idea. Because this way the Marlins save a league minimum salary?
  15. My point was you cant really use that as an argument for him not playing tonight. The man is a relatively patient hitter. Maybe Skaalen's scouting report said swing early on Fogg. Maybe he misread the signs. Maybe he was drunk. There is still overwhelming evidence that Gross will be an adequately patient hitter tonight regardless of what happened last night.
  16. Serious? you are blaming Gross' AB for Bush allowing runs in the 6th? Nope, just stating that Gross was not patient at all, when 95% of MLB players would have taken at least one or two pitches. And you are basing this 95% number on? Gross saw 3.91 pitches per plate appearance last season. That is 69 out of 235 national league players who had at least 100 at bats. The man isnt remotely close to Johnny Estrada (who btw was dead last on the list)
  17. Did you just pick out a random player? Jay Gibbons? I see no comparison what-so-ever. Even factoring in Gibbons best two season 2005 & 2006, Gross splits are superior. Gibbons 3 year splits .267/.321/.462 . The two players arnt close "I'd take Matt Stairs anyday." Bill James Projection Stairs-.258/.352/.454 Gross-.272/.364/.439 CHONE Stairs-.255/.338/.445 Gross-.254/.347/.416 Marcel Stairs-.262/.342/.446 Gross-.259/.348/.441 MINER Stairs-.266/.336/.426 Gross-.256/.338/.410 ZiPS Stairs- .253/.336/.434 Gross-.264/.358/.426 So Gross gets on base more, Stairs hits for more power. I dont really see a substantial difference and if we didnt have Gabe Gross, we should probably be looking at acquiring Matt Stairs for a much needed lefty bat.
  18. Wow, you really made me laugh there. Gross always seemed like a below average defender to me. Then, I went to the game last night. He is a butcher in CF. He had horrible jumps on the ball, and took bad angles. There were 3 balls that above average CF's make, and the only one he came remotely close on was Dunn's HR. Edit: I forgot to mention Gross's great day at the plate. 0-3 while swinging at the first pitch in each at-bat. I thought Estrada was back on the team last night. So you are basing your opinion on last nights game and what he seemed like? When they play 162 games that seems a little short sited. I provided a sample size of half a season that Gross was the team's best defender, you looked at one game. Defensive metrics are shaky, and Gross isnt a great center fielder but he is better than most on this board give him credit for. "0-3 while swinging at the first pitch in each at-bat." Yet he still leads the team in ISO OBP.
  19. He is also a player that hit .270/.361/.464 the last three season vs. right handers. When your team OPS drops .100 points vs. a right hander, Gabe Gross becomes extremely valuable to have around. And its not like he is a total butcher either. He isnt Torii Hunter out there in center but... Gross seems to be the team's best all-around defender in the outfield, leading Brew Crew outfielders in plays above average despite limited playing time. http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/first-half-in-review-the-milwaukee-brewers/
  20. Huh, I didn't hear the interview, but is that a dig at a former Brewer?
  21. Two great pitching performances wasted by West Virginia today.
  22. thats the problem is it is still a steeping stone for any young coach. Anytime UNC, MSU, Duke, Florida, Kansas, UCLA, Arizona have an opening and he is successful coach, he will get a look and it would be hard not to go. Marquette doesnt have a recruitng base. Milwaukee doesnt produce enough talent to support a top top-tier program alone and those that are from Milwaukee dont feel any loyalty to stay (Jerry Smith, Korie Lucious). Bo Ryan is going to still get a majority of the instate recruits. Tubby Smith makes Minnesota a presence again in their state. Chicago will produce alot of talent, but alot of teams feed from there. Unless they go after borderline academic kids that top programs stay away from, they arnt going to land top recruits, and I cant see Marquette doing that. Memphis is different from Marquette. Average ACT: Marquette 24-29, Memphis 19-25.
  23. Not exactly true. Its taken him awhile to get his footing in Illinois losing Scheyer, Frasor, Turner, Gordon, Rose, etc., but he top 10 classes lined up for 2009 and 2010, which is the reason why isn't going anywhere, also the reason they aren't calling for his head.
  24. I think you are being unfair to Tony Bennett. He sint the same coach Dick is. Washington State did average over 66 points in both of his first two seasons. He certainly isnt an up tempo coaching style, but it is alittle better than Dick. It seems to work just fine for Geogetown in the Big East.
