  1. But that’s the type of return this team would likely get if they shopped Burnes this offseason, especially from a team like the Dodgers who would have a leg-up with extending Burnes, imo. This offseason is the sweet-spot for trading Burnes and maximizing return. Higher probability for the trading team to extend him 2 years out from FA vs 1. Last year, at 3 years control, how many teams would have had the prospect capital to trade for Burnes? or even if they did, would have given that much up? This team needs to acquire big-league ready starting pitching prospects to replace Burnes, Woody and Lauer before OD/‘25. Waiting another year puts injury and or regression into the equation. Even with all things being equal, the return shrinks to less than half due to Burnes higher ‘23 salary. For all of these reasons I believe the team trades Burnes this offseason.
  2. I don’t see them turning down the type of return they will get for Burnes this offseason. It will virtually assure the team of extending their contention timeframe, which imo, seems to be their overriding goal.

  4. The Brewers rarely do what we think they’ll do. Opportunistic could also mean trading Burnes this offseason because we will be blown away by trade offers since an ace starter is the most valuable commodity in baseball and by a lot, and 2 years of said commodity is worth more than twice what 1 year is worth.

  6. Agree. Just a special team chemistry-wise. Pitching, defense, stealing bases, moving runners, clutch hitting, just ran out of games. Last home game of the season they gave away a Yount memorabilia book and had to delay the game because of traffic jams around county stadium, people couldn’t get in to the stadium. Reminded me of the home series vs the Rangers in ‘87 during Easter weekend when Selig had them delay the games for nearly an hour because of record same day ticket purchases. Just under 56,000 super enthusiastic fans willing the team to a Sunday sweep of the A’s. Magical years at county stadium in ‘92 & ‘87.
  7. I stand corrected. Doesn’t change my opinion of the Orioles being a team without a burning desire to trade for Burnes. Rodriguez is as close to a likely frontline SP prospect as there has been in the minors in quite some time, imo, and he’s probably pitching in the big-leagues by July of ‘23, if not sooner.
  8. Nice job, lots of good ideas. Like the bullpen moves. Like the Woodruff extension. Like the Idea of trading Burnes, just don’t think Baltimore is the most realistic trade-partner for Burnes, and for the reason wiguy already stated. I suppose if Baltimore thought they could extend him, ok, but that seems too risky. Would absolutely love the return, which is likely also the problem from Baltimore’s point of view. They are short of quality IF prospects and losing Westburg and the best pitching prospect in baseball might be too much for them to bear. Trading Mitchell is a no no for me, but including CRod would be unbearable, so no. Instead, I trade or non-tender Renfroe and use the $11M saved to sign Christian Vasquez for 2/3 years at $17-$24M. That way I can play Mitchell in RF until Wiemer takes over so then I have the fastest, best defensive OF in baseball most of the year, with Yelich at DH where he belongs. Which also means a trade of Tellez should happen.
  9. If Cousins is healthy I probably should have put him in instead of Gott, since I believe he has 1 more option and Gott doesn’t.

  11. At a minimum, the team needs to add a veteran high-leverage arm, preferably LH. One of Hand or Chafin, would work. Both made 6.5M this season and will likely demand a raise due to performance, so whoever can be had for less should be the preferred route. A backend of Williams-Chafin/Hand-Bush would be ok, especially with Strez’s breakout and the potential of Uribe making his mark this season. Would like both of Hand & Chafin, but $16-$20M id probably too much for Stearns to pay, even with money savings from trading Renfroe and letting Wong walk. So here’s my bullpen: Williams-Hand-Bush-Uribe-Strez-Milner-Box-Gott

  13. If the team wants to contend without a rebuild they will need to extend Woodruff or trade him next offseason. Burnes isn’t getting extended, so he will need traded this offseason or next. A trade of Burnes this offseason returns more than twice what the team would get waiting a year and just as importantly gets his replacement starter into the system a year earlier as well. The goal needs to be to get his replacement into the rotation by OD of ‘24. This is why I believe the team will trade Burnes this offseason. They can buy an innings-inning starter like Quintana or Cueto that can replace his innings but will take a hit performance-wise obviously. Outside of Gasser, the teams best minors starters are 3 years away from helping the big-club and that there-in lies the problem. Let’s say the team extends Woodruff, and signs Quintana to a 2 year deal, that gives them a ‘23 rotation of: Woodruff-Peralta-Quintana-Ashby-Lauer-Houser?-Depth signings-Gasser (July)-Burnes replacement (post-S2). 2024– Woodruff-Peralta-Ashby-Lauer (extended?)-Quintana-Gasser-Burnes replacement-Depth starters 2025- Woodruff-Burnes replacement-Peralta-Ashby-Gasser-Burnes replacement-Lauer?-Misiorowski?-Rodriguez?Cruz?Henderson? By ‘25, Burnes replacement could be our 2nd or 3rd best starter. Now if the team is ok with a rebuild, all this I’ve done is moot and they go another year full bore, then likely rebuild. ’
