  1. A Development staff that’s been revamped under Stearns/Arnold over the last 2-3 years. A development staff that has helped Mitchell and Wiemer lower their K rate and improve their walk rate. Turang start to realize some power the second-half of last season. Look at all the hitters that improved as the minors season played out. I think every one of our top 8-9 position players finished the year strong in the box. I don’t think it’s an accident.

  3. I suppose I just have more faith in this organization as a whole than most. I see nothing but solid departments important to the long-term success of this franchise.

  5. Of course not, but that’s why we keep all 4 of our big-league ready OF’s until we figure out who the keepers are. And I did say “early returns” with minor league hitting development since they’ve made numerous changes in that realm over the last 3 or so years with improvements all throughout the system with their hitters, especially this season.

  7. Me too, which is why I’m really hoping Arnold tries to mimic Cleveland with regards to the trade-off of the non-extentionables for young controllable talent. Now that we have a proven pipeline of amateur talent procurement, a proven PDS, and what is looking like, at least with early returns being positive, an improving position player & hitting development system, the trading-off of our non-extensionables is the missing piece to perpetual contention.

  9. I should have been more specific in my trade return package for Burnes. I should have stated top 10-25 prospect, which eliminates a Cartaya, my mistake. And your right, after re-reading your post you did question some of the return packages as being too much, which I agree with, again my mistake. And while I understand your take on not alienating the fan-base, I’m of the belief that when the fans see the athletes this organization will be installing throughout the lineup the next couple of years, and the excitement of watching players running wild both in the field and on the bases, they’ll come to AmFam in droves for the foreseeable future.

  11. So what’s the alternative? Hold Burnes another year when you know it hurts the future of the team just so it doesn’t piss-off some casual fans? And I said a realistic trade return this offseason for Burnes would be 1 top 25, 1 top 50 and 1 top 100, not Cartaya, Miller and Stone, which the Dodgers likely won’t do, or 4 pitchers with elite stuff.

  13. Paper is all that should matter. Arnold & co need to do what’s best for the organization with absolutely zero regard for potential fan reaction. Attanasio is no dummy, he’s smart enough to want what’s best for the team. A top 3 SP in the game shopped to the highest bidder will return the talent needed to not just extend the “bites at the apple” contention strategy, but improve the overall talent level of this organization beyond anything we’d get by holding Burnes for another year. Realistically Burnes returns — 1 top 25, 1 top 50, 1 top 100. With at least 2 of them big-league ready. That’s a fair return. That’s also a return more valuable to this team at this time than keeping Burnes for this coming season.

  15. But that’s the type of return this team would likely get if they shopped Burnes this offseason, especially from a team like the Dodgers who would have a leg-up with extending Burnes, imo. This offseason is the sweet-spot for trading Burnes and maximizing return. Higher probability for the trading team to extend him 2 years out from FA vs 1. Last year, at 3 years control, how many teams would have had the prospect capital to trade for Burnes? or even if they did, would have given that much up? This team needs to acquire big-league ready starting pitching prospects to replace Burnes, Woody and Lauer before OD/‘25. Waiting another year puts injury and or regression into the equation. Even with all things being equal, the return shrinks to less than half due to Burnes higher ‘23 salary. For all of these reasons I believe the team trades Burnes this offseason.

  17. I don’t see them turning down the type of return they will get for Burnes this offseason. It will virtually assure the team of extending their contention timeframe, which imo, seems to be their overriding goal.

  19. The Brewers rarely do what we think they’ll do. Opportunistic could also mean trading Burnes this offseason because we will be blown away by trade offers since an ace starter is the most valuable commodity in baseball and by a lot, and 2 years of said commodity is worth more than twice what 1 year is worth.

  21. Agree. Just a special team chemistry-wise. Pitching, defense, stealing bases, moving runners, clutch hitting, just ran out of games. Last home game of the season they gave away a Yount memorabilia book and had to delay the game because of traffic jams around county stadium, people couldn’t get in to the stadium. Reminded me of the home series vs the Rangers in ‘87 during Easter weekend when Selig had them delay the games for nearly an hour because of record same day ticket purchases. Just under 56,000 super enthusiastic fans willing the team to a Sunday sweep of the A’s. Magical years at county stadium in ‘92 & ‘87.
  22. I stand corrected. Doesn’t change my opinion of the Orioles being a team without a burning desire to trade for Burnes. Rodriguez is as close to a likely frontline SP prospect as there has been in the minors in quite some time, imo, and he’s probably pitching in the big-leagues by July of ‘23, if not sooner.
  23. Nice job, lots of good ideas. Like the bullpen moves. Like the Woodruff extension. Like the Idea of trading Burnes, just don’t think Baltimore is the most realistic trade-partner for Burnes, and for the reason wiguy already stated. I suppose if Baltimore thought they could extend him, ok, but that seems too risky. Would absolutely love the return, which is likely also the problem from Baltimore’s point of view. They are short of quality IF prospects and losing Westburg and the best pitching prospect in baseball might be too much for them to bear. Trading Mitchell is a no no for me, but including CRod would be unbearable, so no. Instead, I trade or non-tender Renfroe and use the $11M saved to sign Christian Vasquez for 2/3 years at $17-$24M. That way I can play Mitchell in RF until Wiemer takes over so then I have the fastest, best defensive OF in baseball most of the year, with Yelich at DH where he belongs. Which also means a trade of Tellez should happen.
  24. The Brewers were a vastly inferior team to both teams you listed. The team only had 3 healthy and stretched starters, a homer-prone late inning bullpen and their best offensive player all September, a rookie. And yeah, they couldn’t hit lefty starters. Counsell overperformed the month of September getting that team 15 wins.
  25. If Cousins is healthy I probably should have put him in instead of Gott, since I believe he has 1 more option and Gott doesn’t.
