Facing 24-year old RHP JT Ginn (who's rehabbing, normally playing in AA ball), Wilken managed an infield single to second base in his first pro at-bat (must have squirted into right field, save that ball!). In the 2nd inning, Wilken pulled a sacrifice fly to left field. He then walked against a 19-year-old RHP before being replaced mid-game. So, after one game, a 1.000 AVG and 1.667 OPS, that'll work! Three youngsters who have excelled all season starred here as well. Leading off, middle infielder Dylan O'Rae (playing second base), drove in five. For those of you who immediately clicked on the box score link above, it was for sure O'Rae's line that grabbed your eye, a double and a sacrifice fly part of his 3-for-4 day. O'Rae was the 102nd pick overall last summer (3rd round out of a Canada high school). In 127 plate appearances this season, the LH-hitting O'Rae has reached in nearly half (.488 OBP!). In the three-hole, infielder Juan Baez was on base four times himself, he's managed a .423 OBP despite only drawing three walks (one of which was in this game). Is a .450 BABIP sustainable? So far, it is for the RH-swinging Dominican native. All three hits were singles here, but Baez has been whacking XBH's galore, slugging .597. Starting RHP Manuel Rodriguez has been a revelation despite the fact he won't even turn 18 years old for two weeks. We don't get pitch counts from rookie-level box scores, but Rodriguez was allowed to work 5.2 innings (no walks helps), striking out six in an effective effort. The native of Mexico is carrying a 1.01 WHIP through 28.2 innings, with the only blemish having allowed five long balls in the Arizona air (two in this game). Just the fact that the Brewers brought him stateside in his age 17 season speaks volumes. The game was 11-3 Brewers until the bottom of the final frame, when an Athletics grand slam tightened things up. Final: DSL Brewers #1 Squad 9, DSL Giants Black 8, ten inningsBox Score / Game Log Is following a Gameday from the Dominican live exhilarating? If so, this one certainly qualified as edge-of-your-seat. Hosting the Giants, watch a 4-3 lead disappear in the top of the 9th as two runs scored. It could have been much worse, as Team Uno coaxed a 4-6-3 double play to end the frame down just one. The Cerveceros then loaded the bases with just one out in the bottom of the 9th, although they could only score the tying run on a sacrifice fly from LF Brian Sanchez (DH'ing here) and his .940 OPS. The Giants would score three runs without a single base hit in the 10th (trust me, visit the game log). Not to be dis-spirited, stay within that same game log as the first two Brewers made outs without even advancing the ghost runner. Then a walk and HBP loaded the bases, and fortunately stud top 2023 international signing CF Yophery Rodriguez was due up, and he pulled a three-run double to right field to tie the game. A throwing error by the A's second baseman sent the throngs home happy as the Crew celebrated. Rodriguez has walked more than he has struck out while posting a .280/.436/.492 line. He turns 18 in December, and may be the next player that age to take the Jackson Chourio / Luis Lara path to Carolina next spring. German catcher Yannic Walther has been solid, singling three times in this one. 18-year-old 2nd year Venezuelan LH starter Anthony Flores fanned eight in 4.2 innings, 39 K's in 28.2 IP in 2023. Team Uno now 21-14. Final: DSL Guardians Red 8, DSL Brewers #2 Squad 7, ten inningsBox Score / Game LogMore entertainment (despite the loss...) Down 7-3 entering the top of the 9th, Team Dos plated four to tie the game. An error by the Cleveland CF helped, but it was still a worthwhile rally (three singles, three walks within). The Guardians stranded runners on 2nd and 3rd in their scoreless 9th. A two-out lineout to short ended the ghost runner 10th for Milwaukee's club, no run scoring. The game was lost by three walks (one intentional), so it was indeed a "walk"-off loss. Not fair - given the loss on his record, LHP David Dominguez did not allow an earned run in 3.1 innings, but season-long control issues did lead to the final run plating. Yet another stat-filled line for INF/OF Demetrio Nadal, playing LF here. Sporting a 1.100 OPS, Nadal was on base four times (two singles, two HBP's), and stole three bases in four attempts (20-for-23 in attempts this season). Exciting indeed... Team Dos falls to 13-22. It's back to a full slate on Tuesday, the Sounds and Mudcats hit the road, while the Shuckers and Timber Rattlers return home. LHP Nate Peterson, up from Carolina, will make his Wisconsin debut. One truly sweet aspect of Sal Frelick's historic phenomenal big-league debut is that every level of the organization can celebrate its own role in his success. For those in the amateur scouting department, you can bet high-fives were en vogue on draft day 2021 and again Saturday night. Frelick's pro ball journey touched every single level of the Brewers' organization, there wasn't a coaching staff or affiliate locale he did not experience. Frelick played 197 games in the system, starting off with four in the Maryvale heat. There were 16 games with the Mudcats, 36 as a Timber Rattler, 52 Shuckers contests, 86 played with the Sounds, and mix in another three for his latest Arizona rehab. Yes, Keston Hiura did not play, and it would seem to be nothing more than a standard day off. "Hug season" is wild across the baseball landscape. It was Monte Harrison striking out leading off the 10th that was the killer, not advancing the ghost runner. Bummer... Final: Biloxi 12, Montgomery (Rays) 7 Via the Shuckers' site: 10-Run Ninth Leads Shuckers to a 12-7 Comeback Win Over Biscuits - Shuckers score 10 runs on seven hits in the ninth to clinch first series win in Montgomery since 2018 Pre-Game Media Notes Box Score / Game Log "10-Run Ninth" - not a headline you'll see very often. This game was streamed free to all via MiLB.com and certainly had the eye of national prospect watchers. What were we saying about the Frelick electricity magically permeating the rest of the system? Coming back from 7-2 to start the 9th is tremendous, but we do need to review the line from RHP Jacob Misiorowski's AA debut. It wasn't stellar, 4 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 BB, 2 HBP's, 2 WP's, 5 K. It started well - Jackson Chourio is ridiculous. Tyler Black is ridiculous. Did I say it's a good time to be a Brewers fan? Now, not only is it a must to review the game log linked above for the wild 9th inning rally, but be sure to check out Cam Robinson's bottom of the 9th to close things out. It was...interesting. Jeferson Quero was idle, we hinted in yesterday's report that may be something to monitor, and it will definitely be if he's sitting again Sunday. Final: Dayton (Reds) 3, Wisconsin 0 Via the Timber Rattlers' site: Dayton Shuts Out Wisconsin - Woodruff looks sharp with three scoreless innings in rehab start Pre-Game Media Notes (Download Link) via the team's Virtual Press Box Box Score / Game Log So, in the midst of all the goings-on in Milwaukee, Nashville, and with Biloxi (in Montgomery, AL), the always sold-out Dayton ballpark hosted the T-Rats and Brandon Woodruff. Hopefully things worked out better from a uniform perspective than Big Woo's Timber Rattler stint last June. As for Woody's mound performance, it was wonderful. RHP Edwin Jimenez' five-inning piggyback outing was a bit uneven, but he spared the bullpen any action. Every Timber Rattlers game of late features an Ernesto Martinez mention, he was on base three times here. The rest of the lineup reached base twice. So, thanks Brandon, for making this a game of note on this exciting night. Final: Carolina 13, Kannapolis (White Sox) 1 Mudcats Hit Back-to-Back-to-Back Homers in 13-1 Victory - Jace Avina led the Mudcats with four hits, four runs, four RBI and two home runs Pre-Game Media Notes Box Score / Game Log Post-Game Interview: Manager Victor Estevez - Yes, a must-listen... Carolina got the jump from a time perspective on all the Saturday festivities and didn't waste much at all. Like seriously? This happened! Backing up Logan Henderson, RHP Jesus Rivero showed why he earned a late-June jump up from Maryvale, three fine innings to get a "blowout save". LF Jace Avina only turned 20 years old last month. Fifty of his 101 pro hits have gone for extra bases, including 25 HR's. Yes, the strikeouts. Note only a .256 BABIP in 2023. Such a fascinating profile. Could see him repeating A-Ball to begin 2024, dominating, and then moving up. Huge 4-for-5 night here. This recent hot stretch finally brings Carolina over .500 at home at 22-21 (24-18 on the road). Thank goodness, because earlier home futility was infuriating as it contributed mightily to a first-half standings collapse. Final: ACL Brewers 10, ACL Guardians 8, seven innings as scheduledBox Score / Game LogA-Crew pitching was not good early here, surrendering all eight runs through the first four innings. So a huge shoutout to former Mudcat RHP Brailin Rodriguez. The 20-year-old (21 next month) had struggled in his comeback outings post-Tommy John surgery. His 3.1 inning line was near-immaculate here and allowed for a major Maryvale rally. That's a real feel-good effort, happy for the young man. It was "only" 106 degrees at game time for this day game, actually an improvement from recent contests. Smart to see that catchers still share duties in these games. Speaking of catchers, birthday boy Satchell Norman celebrated his 21st with a designated hitter assignment, two singles and a walk. Dylan O'Rae managed to lift his unworldly OBP to .484 - listed at 5'7", but we imagine that perhaps he's snuck up an inch or two since signing last summer. Skipper (and former Crew farmhand) Fidel Pena put his trust in 16-year-old RHP Saul Sanchez (17 next month), and the Nicaragua native was touched for a double and four singles in a four-run Guardians rally.Considering he'll turn 23 years old in October, 2nd-year RHP Roman Perez needs to tighten up his efforts, as 9-6 became 12-6 under his watch.Shoutout to recently-turned 19-year-old LF Idalberto Santiesteban, who singled twice and walked twice. At 6'2" and a LH bat, he's cut from central casting in the vitals department. Mix in an outfield assist (and a caught stealing). And if you think I typed his name without utilizing copy-and-paste, you'd be mistaken.It's been a tough rookie campaign for 17-year-old second baseman Jhon Bencosme, but the Dominican switch-hitter was placed in the leadoff spot, smacked two doubles, and walked. Caballero had been out since July 1st, having played in only ten games this season. Like the bulk of the July 2019 international signing class, Caballero has not inspired, similar to $1.3 million OF Luis Medina.
