  1. While we won't be going into too deep of a dive each day to recognize these efforts, we will acknowledge notes of interest. Heck, here's a post from last summer in which we noted the first two professional base hits of a certain currently ultra-red-hot Crew prospect. Our diehards had fun dissecting the day's action in our Minor League Forum preview thread, I suggest you review that first for lineup insights and such. NOTE: Arizona Complex League will be shortened to ACL all season long Box: ACL Reds 9, ACL Brewers Blue 4 Six Blue Team errors led to four unearned runs, but the absence of those that wouldn't have netted a win given the final score. Although he allowed an inherited runner to score, 19-year-old Dominican RHP Samuel Dario, who debuted directly in Maryvale in 2021, was effective in the late innings. With the exception of 19-year-old 2021 14th round CF Jace Avina, who made his pro debut on his birthday, everyone in the lineup reached at least once, led by 18-year-old Venezuelan shortstop Daniel Guilarte who singled and walked twice from the leadoff spot in his pro debut, All eight Brewers hits were singles. And yes, the listed gametime temp was 102 degrees, but don't worry parents, it's a dry heat, as we all know. *** Box: ACL Brewers Gold 5, ACL Athletics 4, ten innings Just-signed Canadian native LHP Justin King kept the top of the 10th scoreless - sacrifice bunt, HBP, then GIDP. (If you're the road team, don't open with a bunt, folks). As seen in the game log (remember, just click on the word "plays" in the upper left on each of these box scores), you'll see that the walk-off win wasn't all that dramatic - an error allowed for the win, but, hey, surely the youngsters celebrated with many a root beer postgame. Four relievers allowed only a single run over the final six innings. What an international flavor here on Day One. Native of the Netherlands, switch-hitting 20-year-old third baseman Kaylan Nicasia reached base thrice. You'll see two doubles and a triple here, and after not homering in 139 island at-bats last summer as a 17-year-old, Dominican RF Luis Castillo went deep here on a fly ball to center field. *** Box: DSL Tigers #1 Squad 8, DSL Brewers #2 Squad 6 Tied at 6, the Brewers surrendered a two-run single in the top of the 9th. Third baseman Juan Baez, initially listed as a catcher upon signing, went 3-for-5 in his pro debut. Baez won't even turn 17 until later this month, and he was batting third in this lineup. 18-year-old 2nd year catcher Brayan Oropeza cracked his first professional home run, a shot to left field that tied the game in the 7th. Cerveceros batters fanned 18 times, drew five walks, and the teams combined for four HBP's. The game was played in a tidy three hours and 53 minutes, as they try to repair the pitch clock in Santo Domingo. *** Box: DSL Phillies Red 2, DSL Brewers #1 Squad 0 Brewer batters reached base seven times - three singles, three walks, one HBP, and had only one at-bat with a runner in scoring position. So clearly the focus here goes to the two Crew arms who combined to allow only one earned run while walking none and striking out ten. 19-year-old Venezuelan RHP Kevin Briceno posted numbers last summer that might have earned him a bump to Maryvale for 2022. This was the pro debut for 18-year-old Dominican RHP Jesael Cabrera. 85 degrees, sunny, no wind. Lather, rinse, repeat. Get used to that as island games only seem interrupted by weather when tropical storms wreak havoc with the schedule from time to time (hopefully not in 2022). *** We are hopeful our faithful daily followers will understand that we will need to focus our efforts on the four full-season affiliates most days, so our game notes on the complex-level players won't be as comprehensive, however you'll see the results posted regularly. As statistics build during the course of the season, we'll dig deeper as necessary. Thanks.
  2. With the recent misery of the big-league club, particularly on offense, Brewers fans turn to the farm this AM for solace and inspiration. Alas, while there's plenty of talent at the affiliate levels, in terms of wins and losses Saturday, it was a whitewash. Let's see how it came about, as there was variety in the pain. Transactions: Congratulations to Kent Hasler , who was - wait for it - yet another undrafted independent league signing by the Crew. Just another reason why we make sure to detail and learn as much as we can about each and every Crew signing. As recent days have proven, no signing is insignificant. Or better put, every signing is of potential significance. As for the two players let go, I detailed their brief professional journeys here. At that same link, an update is provided on the large January 2022 international signing class - at the moment, it does not appear any player from that group is targeted directly for Maryvale. We'll know more when the complex rookie leagues begin play in Arizona and the Dominican on Monday. *** OK, in addition to reviewing Saturday's game action below, you will definitely want to check out the featured article on our home page from my Link Report teammate Daniel -- in fact go there now, and then return: Minor League Players of the Month (May 2022): Carlos F. Well, RH reliever Connor Sadzeck and his 1.56 ERA are celebrating a new baby, as his absence between May 21st and May 29th was for paternity leave. He tossed a scoreless inning here - Connor, not the baby... Bullpen mate Hasler (see transaction section above) made his AAA debut, allowing two hits and a run in his lone inning of work. You'll see some bloated K totals in the box score, and unfortunately it was not within the pitching side of the Sounds ledger. You've been warned. This is how SO CLOSE the Sounds came to not getting shutout, runner on second base, and then: I've been meaning to make note of this. Well, Braun flashbacks are fine, just the very productive healthy ones. 4. Hey, we're only two days away (Monday the 6th) from the complex league games! Action in the Dominican will continue to begin late-mornings (Sunday's off), with Arizona-based fun in the evenings. We already know 90% of DSL box scores will have a note of "sunny, 85 degrees", while we'll prepare for the triple-digit readings in the desert. We will (somehow) often recap as many as eight games a day, yikes, as the Crew has two teams in both locales. Transactions: - RHP Luke Barker's contract selected by MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville - C Alex Jackson's contract selected by MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville - INF/OF Pablo Reyes' contract selected by MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville (replacing INF Mike Brosseau, who was placed on the MLB Brewers' 10-day injured list) - RHP Peter Strzelecki optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers - C Alex Hall designated for assignment, though we should expect him back with High-A Wisconsin in the near future - LHP Nick Bennett assigned to AA Biloxi from AAA Nashville Plenty to digest above: The Rodriguez and Pinero leg injuries (waiting for specific word) are troublesome. Over on our Minor League Forum, Daniel details the exploits of the departing players, wishing them well here. As for the newcomer: *** Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 8, Durham (Rays) 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Bounce Back to Even Series in Durham - Corey Ray’s Grand Slam, Willy Adames’ Homer Propels Nashville Past Bulls You can get caught up on all things Sounds with the Voice of the club, Jeff Hem, at the 17:00 mark of the Main Street Sports Today Friday broadcast The career path has been awkwardly painful, both from a performance and injury standpoint, for Corey Ray. Consider how different the Brewers big league roster would be if the now-27-year-old Ray had come even a bit close to fulfilling the potential of a 5th overall pick. Lorenzo Cain would have still been signed prior to 2018 (Ray posted a .678 OPS at High-A in a middling 2017 season at Carolina). But Jackie Bradley Jr. certainly wouldn't have been signed, which means Hunter Renfroe isn't a Brewer today. The permutations go beyond that, but the fact remains that Ray is in his final option year and still has the better part of four months to prove any worth at all towards 2023. Speaking of the big-league club, pretty huge that Willy Adames was able to post five plate appearances (1-for-3 with a home run and two walks as you just read in the filed game report). Let's go boom, shall we? It appears Adames has a scheduled day off Saturday before playing again Sunday. Enough can't be said about RHP Caleb Boushley's bullpen-saving highly-effective seven-inning 102-pitch effort here. There's an elephant in the room, and that'd be Joey Wiemer's absence since his mid-game exit on Tuesday. With this being a road game, the Biloxi pre-game audio show is not available via MiLB.TV. It's possible Garrett made specific mention to the reason for Wiemer's sideline stint during that or his game call. One thing I've learned over these many years of daily summaries for you all, is not to put the affiliate broadcasters on the spot regarding player injuries. If the Brewers organization is not making specific mention of an injury status, then we need to be respectful of the spot the broadcasters are put in. (It helps immensely and frees up the broadcast crews when an injury was obviously related to an on-the-field incident available via video, but that wasn't the case with Wiemer.) That being said, little birdies find a way to reach us from time to time, but unfortunately because it's unsubstantiated, I can't reveal whether the news gets a thumb up or a thumb down. Read into that last sentence as you wish, the hint is pretty blatant. About these highlights coming from Pensacola's beautiful ballpark, if you pick up on a tinge of excitement in the Shuckers' positives, it's because Biloxi's #2 Voice, Thomas Zinzarella, slid over to the Blue Wahoos booth to help cover for an absence. Nice work, Thomas! It's the morning of June 4th, and Jakson Reetz' OPS is at 1.123 in an offensively-challenged league (despite the final score here). Incredible. Sal Frelick's first 80 AA at-bats have produced a .595 OPS and three extra-base hits (two doubles and a triple). Joey Wiemer's OPS in his first 176 AB's at AA is .931. Just sayin', prospect rankers... 21-year-old up-from-Maryvale fill-in Terence Doston finally had an "oh, this is AA" night (0-for-4, four K's), but the young man had been absolute money in his Shucker efforts prior. 6. There's no way to quickly tell if the Brewers' organization leads all of MiLB in walk-off victories (by every manner imaginable it seems), but if it doesn't, then it must be close to the top, given the overall W-L record of the four affiliates and the seemingly nightly entry (sometimes more than one, like within this report) we document here. Word of advice: don't leave Sounds-Shuckers-Timber Rattlers-Mudcats games early! Transactions: RH reliever Miguel Sanchez is recalled to the big league roster as Luis Perdomo hits the injured list. (Sanchez had not physically left the Crew's big-league road trip, as he remained on their "taxi squad" upon his option this week.) Reliever Zach Vennaro turns 26 years old this coming Friday. The 6'6" power righty is about to make his first appearance at the AAA level as the former independent leaguer gets the bump up from Biloxi. SS Willy Adames will be the star of the day in Zebulon Sunday as he begins a rehab stint with a one-day appearance with the Mudcats. Not only will the super-young Mudcats be treated to their best catering of 2022, but the ebullient Dominican native Adames will be of incredible inspiration to this primarily international-based collection of A-ballers. Adames will then travel less than forty miles to hook up with Nashville in Durham on Monday. We won't say it was out-of-nowhere, because Boushley has been solid, as evidenced by his 4.23 ERA entering this game. That ERA is now down to 3.66. As noted in the filed report linked above, RHP's Zack Brown and Hobie Harris finished up nicely (Harris striking out all three men faced to end things). Voice of the Sounds Jeff Hem released his latest podcast discussion, a ten-minute chat with Harris. As for the thinking on the Zach Vennaro call up, we see that veteran RH reliever Connor Sadzeck (0.63 ERA) has not pitched since May 20th. We know another effective bullpen arm, righty Peter Strzelecki, has been with the big league Brewers' taxi squad for their extended road trip. Until we get confirmation, Sadzeck's status is unknown. Five of the seven Sounds hits went for extra bases. OF Abraham Almonte's .500 slugging leads the current collection of Sounds now that Mark Mathias and his insane .341/.425/.549 AAA line is with the Brewers. We all love our pal Joey in the starting lineup, and having every Monday off helps. Just sayin'. In this one, Wiemer doubled, singled, walked, and stole two bases. Heck, that's prompting tweets like this - Biloxi is carrying one spare infielder, and Felix Valerio was the DH Saturday, so all were in the starting lineup. The lone extra outfielder is currently 20-year-old Terence Doston, utilized as a pinch-runner late in this one. 7. Transactions: RH reliever Miguel Sanchez is recalled to the big league roster as Luis Perdomo hits the injured list. 8. Fans in attendance at the three Brewers affiliate games saw plenty of action Friday night, There were runs scored (both the good and bad guys) in 22 half-innings, including ten turns at bat in Biloxi. Despite a loss and now a three-game skid, the 30-15 Sounds sit three games atop the International League West Division standings. The Shuckers sit at 20-21, but just 1.5 games back (three in the loss column) in the Southern League South Division. A sweet win Friday placed the 27-16 Timber Rattlers just one game back of Cedar Rapids in the Midwest League West Division, with a chance to tie for the top spot head-to-head with the Kernels Saturday evening. Your exciting super-young 24-18 Mudcats were rained out last night, but they sit atop the Carolina League North Division by one game. MiLB playoff procedures can be found here. Notice AAA, with its expanded schedule deeper into September, is unique. 10. Sincere apologies to Biloxi's Terence Doston and Carolina's Jackson Chourio for not referencing their walk-off base hits within the title of this report. But when you hear the line "simply addicted to hitting nukes" within a local TV highlight package, and it refers to the golden boy of the Brewers' farm system, well, the headline decision is automatic. But this report will certainly get to the last-moment victories within, and it was an unusually busy Thursday on the transaction front, even if there were only two actual active roster changes. Transactions: 18-year-old Venezuelan native Jadher Areinamo struck out only 22 times in 152 Dominican Summer League at-bats in 2021. While not the official word, his arrival in Cedar Rapids to join the Timber Rattlers is most likely associated with the apparent injury status of infielder Antonio Pineiro, which was referred to in our report of Wednesday's games. Regarding the three position players who were let go, none had seen time with a full-season club (A-ball or above). BrewerFanatic's @damuelle provided details on their baseball journeys here. We learned that OF Je'Von Ward's injury status (formally not disclosed) will unfortunately cost him the 2022 season. Finally, a player signing reminder that the Brewers still have a portion of their international bonus pool available to ink players overlooked during the initial January signing period, during which the Crew brought 33 players on board. On to the evening's action - Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Toledo (Tigers) 9, Nashville 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Downed by Toledo - Nashville unable to erase early deficit Even in a loss where the outcome was determined early (Nashville down 9-2 after three innings), the Sounds' staff puts together a game summary that includes bullet points worth knowing. We realize that linking to each affiliate's game summary requires four additional clicks on your part, but the information provided is helpful and often important to know, and it aids us from having to re-write readily available details on the action and allows us to focus on items we find of interest. After opening the game with his second home run of the season, CF Jonathan Davis followed up four innings later with his glove - Weston Wilson was caught stealing to end the 6th, Sounds down 9-3 at the time. Guess it can be kind-of-justified, with two outs a big inning is probably not forthcoming, where if successful, a single base hit at least nets another run. But no, despite that sentence, can't talk myself into approval here - Corey Ray did not play despite his now-active roster status. RHP Dylan File had only made one relief appearance since his 2017 rookie season, save for a five-inning performance in April that followed Luis Perdomo's work as an opener that night. File got one inning of work in with a no-pressure 8th, and following his removal from the 40-man roster, we'll have to monitor what the organization's plans are for him. Starter Tyler Herb is having trouble establishing a presence at the AAA level, though his two appearances this month (one in relief) is a blatantly small sample. In 2019, Herb struggled with a 7.16 ERA in 16 games (13 starts) in the Baltimore system. Kudos, LHP Andy Otero, big-time bullpen-saving effort. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes via the Shuckers' Virtual Press Box Final: Biloxi 4, Montgomery (Rays) 3, ten innings Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please review: Doston Delivers Walk-Off Winner In Series Opener - Wiemer Hits League-Leading 12th Home Run Terence Doston is only 21 years old and is getting his first taste of full-season ball. The 2019 22nd round pick out of a Tampa high school is up partly to cover for the non-disabled list absence of fellow outfielder Sal Frelick, who had missed some time after getting dinged up laying out for a ball. Frelick returned in this game, 2-for-5 out of the leadoff spot, great news. Doston was in the game as initially box score reviewers gulped. He took over for Joey Wiemer defensively in the top of the 9th. No injury update here, thankfully, Wiemer struck out swinging to begin the bottom of the 8th, MiLB.TV subscribers can go to the 03:26:50 hour/minute mark here. But a pitch earlier in the at-bat low in the zone had been called a strike, and it seems Wiemer did some barking from the dugout three pitches into Thomas Dillard's subsequent at-bat that got him tossed, along with Manager Mike Guerrero. Guerrero slammed his helmet and was fired up! WXXV with the full-game highlights during which we now have the infamous phrase that will clearly be etched on Wiemer's Cooperstown plaque someday - "Simply Addicted to Hitting Nukes". Thank you, Jeff Haeger, for this. Seven and one-third shutout innings via the Biloxi bullpen, monster effort, guys! Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes via their all-encompassing Virtual Press Box Final: Cedar Rapids (Twins) 9, Wisconsin 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers' site, game details, please review: Cedar Rapids Shuts Out Wisconsin - Rattlers held to two hits in 9-0 loss T-Rats went 2-for-28, ten K's (five walks). RF Carlos Rodriguez had both knocks, pushing his May OPS to .903. Two of the Kernels' nine runs were unearned, as Wisconsin tossed three errors into this unappealing salad mix of a game. Shout-out to RH reliever Joey Matulovich on his fine work, stranding a baserunner for LHP Russell Smith before throwing an additional shutout frame. Smith, the 6'7" 2021 2nd round pick, continues to seek his footing in pro ball, while Matulovich is clearly still inspired by my brief interaction with him at a Cape Cod League game in the summer of 2018 shortly after his being drafted by the Crew out of Cal (I also convinced him to sign). Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 3, Kannapolis (White Sox) 2, eleven innings Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats' site, game details, please review: Chourio’s Walk-Off Lifts Pescados to 3-2 Victory - The first place Mudcats won their third straight on a game-winning hit in the eleventh Consecutive-game bonus where we get the postgame chat - LISTEN: Post-Game Interview with Manager Victor Estevez The Mudcats went with their all international-signing lineup, as the only two U.S. born position players on the roster, infielder Zack Raabe and outfielder Arbert Cipion, sat this one out. The composition of this roster is almost incomprehensible to longtime followers of the Crew's system - simply remarkable efforts on the part of the international scouting staff, although let's be honest, the proof will be in the pudding in the coming years. Although it sure seems like Jackson Chourio's pudding is going to be awfully yummy -- Earlier in the evening - Mudcat pitchers walked ten and plunked one in the 11 innings, but also fanned 15. In addition to reading about it in the team's summary, the game logs we link to are often a great review on how teams (both the good guys and the bad guys) escape the zombie runner innings unscathed occasionally. 11. 12. Details forthcoming on a dominant performance by our precocious Mudcats, another fantastic outing for a resurgent Timber Rattler starting pitcher, a rare stumble for the Sounds bullpen, and another idle day for the Shuckers, this time via Mother Nature. Before we dig into the details, let's briefly discuss why the upcoming Memorial Day weekend is such an important marker in the minor league season from a fan perspective. You've seen them, we link to them often, heck, you'll view some in this edition of our report. We're talking about highlights with near-empty stands, particularly in Zebulon, North Carolina, and Biloxi, Mississippi. We're not quite sure what to make of light attendance for Shuckers games, and likely neither is the local Chamber of Commerce, as attendance has regularly fallen short of expectations for beautiful MGM Park since construction was completed in 2015. Carolina's Five County Stadium was built in 1991, and the Mudcats franchise has evolved (devolved?) from the AA level to High-A, and now single-A. I enjoyed this article by Cory Lavalette of the North State Journal and hope you will as well. It paints for us, in a positive way, the dichotomy of the experience of taking in a Mudcats game vs, that of the AAA Durham Bulls, merely 37 miles away. It seems that Zebulon itself is becoming a growing residential destination and with that, the potential for increased crowds at Carolina games exists. Of course, there are no such concerns in Nashville and Appleton. Several Timber Rattlers have expressed within interviews their pleasure with the larger crowds compared to their prior Zebulon home, Antoine Kelly the most recent. It's not surprising that in the business world of minor league baseball, this upcoming weekend is huge as the weather improves, and as most school systems wrap up or are on the verge of doing so. Here's to the crowds enhancing our own highlight-viewing pleasure while also giving the Brewers prospects the local audiences they deserve for the summer. Transactions: None Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Toledo (Tigers) 3, Nashville 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Walk-Off Walk Dooms Sounds - Mud Hens score game two win in walk-off fashion RH reliever Thomas Jankins utilized a pickoff at second base to help escape his 8th inning jam, but as the summary detailed, couldn't quite seal the deal in the fateful 9th - You may have caught this from the Journal-Sentinel earlier this week: Pitcher Peter Strzelecki, catcher Alex Jackson and utility man Mark Mathias were present in the visiting clubhouse at Petco Park. A team is permitted to carry up to five players on its taxi squad for all road trips. For Strzelecki, an undrafted free agent signing by Milwaukee in 2018, it marks his first time in a big-league clubhouse. The right-handed reliever wasn’t with the Brewers on the major-league side in spring training, either. Mathias was indeed activated to take Hunter Renfroe's roster spot. The report does shine a light on what the Brewers think currently of Strzelecki, perhaps just a bit higher on the reliever rung than Luke Barker, Zack Brown, Hobie Harris, and Connor Sadzeck. Based on their 2022 performances, it'd be hard to quibble with any of the choices. Jackson's absence from Nashville explains Nick Kahle's random callup to AAA. Brice Turang stole his 5th base in six attempts. Mario Feliciano has yet to go deep in 97 at-bats despite otherwise pretty numbers. It seems so long ago (2019 with then high-A Carolina) that Feliciano cranked 19 bombs. We didn't forget to give you a shout-out beyond what the game summary, provided, Jason Alexander. You've been wonderful, another zero-walk performance here (only 12 free passes in 47.2 IP). The Cedar Rapids newspaper report includes thoughts on Jarvis from the opposing dugout. Scary moment in the top of the 9th - MiLB.TV subscribers go the 03:08:00 hour/minute mark - as Antonio Pinero slid feet-first into a successful steal of second base, appeared to jam his leg going in, and was clearly in pain. After a few minutes with the trainer and acting Manager Liu Rodriguez (Joe Ayrault still away), in what I can only call a near-shocking decision, Pinero remained in the game for a few more pitches. Still clearly uncomfortable, he was then pulled for a pinch-runner. Please always act on the side of caution guys, that was not a good look. Outfielder Carlos Rodriguez has an .855 OPS in May. Still just in his age 21 season, yet it's season five overall (includes the lost 2020 season in which service time still applies). Folks may not remember that Rodriguez signed for $1.355 million in the summer of 2017. 14. The affiliate bats were up to the task on Saturday night, leading the way to wins at the top three levels of the Crew's system. RHP Tyler Herb, a recently-turned 30-year-old with two stints in the Seattle system on his resume, in addition to minor league stays with San Francisco and Baltimore, continued to shine in Biloxi, making his case for the Brewers to find room on a crowded Nashville roster. Though the kids in Carolina dropped their contest, their bats were hardly idle. Warmer temperatures bringing about crooked numbers, yeah, we're ready! Transactions: Technically, Lutz had been activated from the IL since April 30th when he went to the nebulously named "Development List". As you'll read below, he came back with a bang. For example, did you catch the Mario Feliciano note within? Mario walked and singled in this one. Only eight hits for Nashville, so the eight Sounds runs scored can be characterized as opportunistic. Seven walks drawn and three successful stolen base attempts helped. How deep is Rick Sweet's bench (if indeed his inactive bodies are healthy and available)? Catcher Alex Jackson was utilized as the designated hitter while Keston Hiura, Jon Singleton, David Dahl, and Abraham Almonte all had the night off. At the big-league level, Jandel Gustave is headed to the IL (hamstring). Brent Suter's return from paternity leave will help backfill, but you can bet that the Nashville bullpen has their eyes on both the injury (and the ineffectiveness) of the big-league middle relief corps. 16. Perhaps it's fitting that the four Brewers affiliates split their contests on Friday the 13th. It is also that day on the calendar for the opponents after all. Let's dive into the action and learn why it was a 50-50 kind of evening on the farm. Transactions: RHP Jandal Gustave was recalled to Milwaukee. Gustave never actually left the big-league club after his recent option as the front office was aware Brent Suter would be going on a paternity leave. Nashville activated CF Abraham Almonte from the 7-day injured list. Almonte last played on April 23rd. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Jacksonville (Marlins) 7, Nashville 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Hiura Homers Again But Sounds Fall - Multiple Nashville Rallies Fall Short in Jacksonville Oh Keston, to borrow from "Seinfeld", you are vexing. You are an enigma, a mystery wrapped in a riddle. We are enjoying your five-game stay and 1.417 OPS with the Sounds thus far. Friday night you played left field after three games at second base and one at first base. You did not strike out but have done so in six of your 19 at-bats thus far. You were caught stealing (now 0-for-2 on the basepaths with Nashville). Small 2022 AAA sample aside, Hiura will likely be with the Sounds long enough (20 days) to utilize the 2022 option in full, meaning he won't be able to be optioned in 2023. From a Milwaukee front office perspective, perhaps it's simply best if Hiura simply rakes all summer long. If Andrew McCutchen continues to middle along or is sidelined, Hiura is the logical primary designated hitter option. If he truly finds himself, Keston fills that DH role heading into 2023. But in the big picture, it's not hard to envision one of the many MLB have-nots trading for him and living with the various faults that keep Hiura a somewhat polarizing figure in Brewers circles. Pretty impressive that Jon Singleton is batting .207 but with an .859 OPS. OK, Brice Turang lining into a bases-loaded double play to end the game to cap his 0-for-5 night after so much recent success is likely a Friday the 13th moment. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes via the Shuckers' Virtual Press Box Final: Biloxi 9, Birmingham (White Sox) 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please review: Five-Run Sixth Inning Catapults Shuckers to Win - INF Cam Devanney and C Jakson Reetz Homer in Victory Nice win, but the first thing box score browsers will notice is that pitchers came to the plate. Both Andy Otero and Arnaldo Hernandez struck out in their lone at-bats. How did this come about? Biloxi lost their designated hitter when an early Garrett Mitchell exit prompted a defensive shuffle, and the Shuckers tend to have the shortest bench of all the Brewers affiliates (this seems to be a consistent issue in recent Biloxi seasons). Mitchell left to begin the 4th inning. He made no defensive plays in the top of the 3rd nor did he come to the plate in the bottom of that inning. Hate to assume, but perhaps the exit was health-related, and you know what, to be fair, let's end the speculation right there. The Shuckers drew eleven walks in this game, and 1B Thomas Dillard grabbed three of those and was on base all five plate appearances. Dillard did commit his 6th error in 20 games at first base. Despite just a 1-for-5 night, 2B Felix Valerio stole three bases, giving him six in eight attempts. Though Mitchell, Sal Frelick, and Joey Wiemer each walked one time, they combined to go 0-for-8 on a night when the offense scored nine runs, allowing others to get the spotlight. Here's my take as you review those very low batting averages and OPS marks in your daily Carolina box score. It's very cool that this very (repeat, very) young bunch - and you can add the pitchers into that ultra-youthful category - will have a chance to grow all summer long, and many of them will, several of them substantially. But even so, there's always going to be another young crop behind them, whether in Maryvale now, or part of the next draft class. How many of the current Mudcats will best be served by repeating the level in 2023? Is there a danger of moving some along without that extra development year in Zebulon? You know what, it's way too early to truly ponder that. I can remember some very veteran teams in Appleton when the Timber Rattlers were the low-A club, and they gave us some moments to enjoy, but in the end, they were a bunch of 23-year-olds with limited upside. 18. It's hard not to be impressed with the consistency we're seeing at Nashville and Wisconsin, and not just in terms of wins and losses, but overall play. The Biloxi roster is too talented to continue their current funk, one would think, but the Shuckers are in danger of being swept in a six-game series. Carolina is entertaining regardless of decision. Let's check out Saturday's action. Transactions: INF Mike Brosseau recalled from Nashville as Andrew McCutchen hits the Covid IL. File simply needs a full and productive 2022 in his 2nd option season, and he's on his way, as his 1.28 WHIP thus far matches the career mark that landed him on the Crew's 40-man roster in the first place. Brice Turang is a dude, everyone. Unfortunately, no video clip of the go-ahead knock, If Kolten Wong is counting on Milwaukee to pick up his 2023 option, well, he shouldn't be. Should Wong face any type of extended absence this summer, Turang's going to get his chance. Manager Rick Sweet and Pitching Coach Jeremy Accardo have a seemingly endless line of effective relievers they call on night after night. Year in and year out, the David Stearns/Matt Arnold combo prove just as adept at building a AAA roster as they are on the big-league level. A bit over two weeks ago, Voice of the Sounds Jeff Hem interviewed Accardo, in his first year in the organization, for the pre-game show (audio). I came away impressed with Jim Henderson's replacement. We link on our forums whenever Jeff releases his weekly collection of pre-game chats, hopefully you've been checking them out -- you can catch up on all of them here. Finally, going back to Wednesday's 4-2 Nashville win for a moment, the losing Tides relief pitcher was RHP Logan Gillaspie, the 2019 Timber Rattler who was a surprise cut by the Crew in September of that year. Gillaspie persevered, latched on with Baltimore (smart move), and may have been one of the bigger stunner 40-man roster adds in all of MLB last fall. He has a 1.61 WHIP in seven relief appearances thus far, but hey, great situation for him. There was statistical evidence that the season-opening 7-0 run was a bit of a mirage, but few of us expected the performances we've seen as of late. First off, the Shuckers have played only 26 games. We're just under one-fifth of the way through the AA season. But since we can't quite write about circumstances come August, we're left to ponder performances through May 7th. Garrett Mitchell (not singling him out, but well, kind of) is 2-for-his-last-33. Joey Wiemer's .872 OPS through 26 games is pretty, but 36 strikeouts in 101 AB's included the golden sombrero on Saturday evening. Gabe Holt seems like he's lost all sorts of statistical mojo by not being a leadoff mainstay, evidenced by his .462 OPS. Thomas Dillard is fanning in nearly 45% of his at-bats. This isn't a very deep roster -- outside of the backup catchers, struggling small-samplers Noah Campbell and Ashton McGee comprise the Biloxi bench. We're never going to see thumping Southern League offensive figures (well, Prince Fielder-Rickie Weeks-Brad Nelson sure tried in 2004 for a 65-75 Huntsville Stars squad), but the league just isn't built that way, and we need to remember that. Here's hoping for some turnarounds soon. If you wish to sample the Biscuit home runs that did in the Shuckers, Lucas Erceg was victimized here and southpaw Andy Otero here. 20. For the second time on the young season, the Timber Rattlers walked off without having to lift the bat off a shoulder. The Mudcats rode a special starting lineup to a tight victory that went deep into the Carolina night. On the flip side of the W-L ledger, the Sounds' Ethan Small allowed twice as many earned runs in the first inning as he had allowed in his prior five starts combined. Remember when the Shuckers opened the season 7-0? Good times. Since then? 5-13, ouch. Ready for your daily round-up? Here we go! Transactions: RHP Luis Perdomo to the big league Brewers, as he was selected to the 40-man roster from Nashville. Keston Hiura will join the Sounds within the next day or so. The Perdomo/Hiura swap constituted the 22nd and 23rd player transactions for the Sounds this season. Nashville staff pointed out that in the first full calendar month of 2021, there had been 69 (!) player moves, in case you had forgotten about the injury madness that plagued the parent club last spring. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Norfolk (Orioles) 6, Nashville 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Grand Slam Leads Tides over Sounds - Norfolk gets blast in the first inning to even series MiLB's near-consensus top prospect, Baltimore's Adley Rutschman, made his 2022 AAA debut as he works his way back from a triceps injury, though he played first base in this game rather than catcher. The Tides' backstop on this night was old friend Jacob Nottingham, and he played a part in Ethan Small's rough first frame, drawing a two-out walk to load the bases just prior to the grand slam you read about in the summary. You can watch the fateful blast here (the Sounds' staff saves the good camera work for their own grand slams). It is the only home run allowed by Small in 27 1/3 innings this season. RHP Zack Brown came on for Small to start the 5th and induced three groundouts in a 1-2-3 inning. Brown's 6th inning, however, went walk-walk-HBP-K-sac fly-walk. RHP Peter Strzelecki continued his excellent work by stranding all three of Brown's baserunners with a strikeout, then fanned the side in order in the 7th. Corey Ray and his .427 OPS (34% K rate on the relatively young season) sat for a second consecutive game. Milwaukee's 40-man roster is at only 39 even after the Luis Perdomo call-up, and RHP Justin Topa could be placed on the 60-day IL if need be, so Ray's 40-man roster spot isn't in imminent danger, but things are not trending well in his final option year. Despite the close final score, the only video the Sounds posted on this evening was from their Country Music Legend's between-innings race (Reba won on this night). Garrett Mitchell is now 5-for-6 in stolen base attempts, and as you'll see below from the clips the Shuckers gleaned from the Biscuits' video feed, still has multiple tools. (FYI - each of the Crew's four full-season affiliates currently has exactly one "Zach" or "Zack". Two of each in total, and it's maddening that I need to look up the spelling each time.) Hello to catcher Alex Hall, who finally made his season debut. Hall was not on any type of injured or restricted list, but the roster limits are such that players can sometimes avoid placements even if they are laid up in some way. Hopefully all is good with the switch-hitting Aussie. Via the T-Rats' You Tube page, the team asks "Is This Real?" Maybe not quite in the "Real, and They're Spectacular' category, but two walk-off wild pitches by May 6th, with Zavier Warren scoring the winning run each time, is pretty cool. 22. Keep in mind it was only a five-round draft in 2020. Shook conceivably could have been considered for drafting as early as the 6th round. Brandon Knarr, same thing. It’s unfortunate they get lumped into the “undrafted” category.
  23. A 2-2 night on Tuesday won't change these standings all that much - the Crew representing here very well. Organizational Overall Minor League Records through Sunday May 1st
