  1. Transactions: - INF/OF Pablo Reyes optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers (creating space for the reinstatement of INF/OF Jace Peterson) - RHP Arielbi Gonzalez promoted to Low-A Carolina from ACL Brewers Blue - RHP Yerlin Rodriguez promoted to Low-A Carolina from ACL Brewers Gold Final: Nashville 11, Durham (Rays) 8 Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Wiemer, Sounds Slug Past Durham - Joey Wiemer Hits Two of Nashville’s Four Homers in Road Victory Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log First order of business was confirming that Sal Frelick was in fact simply enjoying a day off (he was). A thank you to Spencer Michaelis for splicing these out from the road Bulls broadcast. The Joey Wiemer blasts are in reverse chronological order - In a down season in terms of average and OBP, Wiemer has 19 home runs and is 29-for-32 in stolen base attempts. Wish my down seasons in life were as productive. Take a gander at Wiemer's month-to-month splits. We may never know the extent of the still unconfirmed hand-related woes that apparently impacted his June and July, but with his promotion, Brewers brass saw past that impact. The roadrunner Sounds only attempted two stolen bases, but both Esteury Ruiz and Garrett Mitchell were successful (naturally). Although not snapped when he was with Nashville, have to love the photo of Ruiz sitting atop his MiLB Player Page. When they weren't crushing dingers, the Sounds were 4-for-5 with RISP. Take note, big league club. Not a stellar mound night, Dylan File 106 pitches in just 4.1 innings, and while Cam Robinson opened a get-some-work-in 9th with single-walk-two RBI double, he immediately buckled down to retire the final three batters. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final, Game One: Chattanooga (Reds) 4, Biloxi 2 Box Score / Game Log Final, Game Two: Biloxi 11, Chattanooga 5 Box Score / Game Log Warren Drives in Six Across Two Games as Shuckers Split Doubleheader - Whitley Homers, Walks Four Times for Biloxi Health concerns first from the 3rd inning of Game One - Tristen Lutz was drilled by a pitch right off the protective left ear of his batting helmet, or perhaps just a touch above it. MiLB TV subscribers, go the 01:57:00 hour/minute mark here. Clearly shaken up but somehow managing to stay on his feet, Lutz was immediately whisked into the dugout. Hopefully OK, and surely, Tristen was placed on concussion-watch protocol immediately. Best wishes, young man. Thomas Dillard saw his first 2022 defensive action at a position other than first base when he started for Lutz in left field of Game Two, and wouldn't you know, had an outfield assist. Don't expect days off for Corey Ray or Garrett Whitley while Lutz is sidelined, and Terence Doston remains on the roster and entered for Lutz in Game One. Thanks again, Spencer - a couple of filthy pitches from LHP Robert Gasser here. Gasser deserved a better fate in Game One, as the doubleheader summary detailed well. Gasser walked one, hit one batter, and fanned nine in 5.2 IP, touched for two solo home runs. Here is a direct link to the Shuckers' Twitter Media Page, where you will find ten, count 'em, ten videos from the Friday twinbill. RH starter Victor Castaneda can underwhelm as he did in the nightcap: four shutout innings and handed a six-run lead, then homer - bunt single - line drive single - line drive double - home run to start the 5th. Final: Lansing (Athletics) 3, Wisconsin 2 Rattlers Late Lead Disappears Against Lansing - Lugnuts beat Rattlers 3-2 Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log Honestly, I'm trying to picture the combined frustration level of a fan in attendance in Appleton Friday night who was also simultaneously listening to the big-league Brewers game. That game summary is just dripping with what-if's and why's. Nice awaited rebound effort from RHP Israel Puello, though, sweet. Saturday marks ten days since Jackson Chourio (sore right elbow) played. While that Chourio note may bum you out, these two interviews were fun, especially Metzinger, who only learned a minute or two prior he'd be going on the air - Via WSCO's "The Show with Leo and Balky: Timber Rattlers 7th round Louisville third baseman Ben Metzinger (go to the 12:40 minute mark) - also 2021 5th round Duke infielder Ethan Murray (go to the 37:45 minute mark) Speaking of audio -- "The final Los Cascabeles Night of the season was a tough 3-2 loss for the Timber Rattlers. Chris Mehring & Kyle Lobner talk about the positives like Israel Puello, Joe Gray Jr. and Jose Acosta. Joe Ayrault chimes in with a brief history of Hit Batsmen in the Darrien Miller family and more in this edition of the Postgame Podcast." Did we link within our daily reports to the latest T-Rat talk yet, with Darrien Miller? Here you go. As of Sat. AM, about a day and a half left for those sweet jerseys via auction. Final: Carolina 4, Kannapolis (White Sox) 1 Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log At least for the moment, no game summary available for this road contest. The Voice of the Mudcats, Greg Young, Jr., hasn't traveled with the team this season, something hopefully rectified in 2023 and beyond, it's amazing he has provided us with as much as he has this season. Remember Brewers, you own this affiliate! Yes, LHP Leoni De La Cruz was already 23 years old when he signed with the Crew in 2021. Now 24, that should be taken into account. But De La Cruz got an out to strand three baserunners for starter Tyler Woessner and then went on to toss four additional scoreless. That's one of the more impressive relief performances in the system this season. This was Woessner's full-season debut. Via @Joseph Zarr in our Minor league Forum nightly thread: Uh oh, Woessner just took a hard-hit comebacker off his pitching arm/hand? It's hard to tell. The trainer came out and gave skipper Victor Estevez the 'no go' sign. MiLB TV subscribers: Go to the 01:26:25 hour/minute mark here. Ugh, but how lucky have we been to have Joseph somehow monitor so much game action live from his Pacific Northwest farm-cave. We've been privy to details we otherwise would not have been, so thanks, Joseph! 2022 first round pick Eric Brown, Jr. has been idle since Tuesday, three games missed. As is so often the case without a clear in-game exit, we are left to wonder. For all we know, Brown could be on a personal-related absence. No speculation on our part - yet. Monster game for 18-year-old LF Luis Castillo, 4-for-4 with two doubles. He factored into all three run-scoring innings, and in the unique summary-less scenario here, this is an ideal time for you to click on the game log and visit the 2nd, 6th, and 8th innings. It's four evening games for the affiliates Saturday night. Both Nashville (leading) and Carolina (trailing) see 3.5 game differences in their respective standings. Oh, and we kicked off a new "Alumni News and Notes Thread", be sure to check out the Friday nights of Ryan Aguilar and Cody Ponce! Catch you again Sunday morning, folks. 2. Ramirez last saw the mound in 2019 in Maryvale. Injuries stink. Shoulder surgery in November of 2021 the latest for Ramirez.
  3. Aguilar reached base three times via two walks and an HBP, OBP always part of his game.
  4. Replaced this: Braves (04/06/21) -- Acquired RHP Chad Sobotka and RHP Patrick Weigel in exchange for SS Orlando Arcia With this in the initial post of this thread: Braves (08/16/22) -- Acquired cash considerations for 1B/3B/DH Tyler White
  5. Just a reminder that if the Brewers are considering Erceg that decision will be made about ten days earlier than the others, as Erceg qualifies for minor league free agency if not added.

  7. With the minor league seasons wrapping up soon, we can begin to predict who the Brewers will be adding to their 40-man roster by November (or sooner) in order to prevent other organizations from plucking them in December's Rule 5 draft. All MLB teams need to finalize their Rule 5 protection "reserve" lists by November 20th. Via MLB.com - "Held each December, the Rule 5 Draft allows clubs without a full 40-man roster to select certain non-40-man roster players from other clubs. Clubs draft in reverse order of the standings from the previous season. Players signed at age 18 or younger need to be added to their club's 40-Man roster within five seasons or they become eligible for the Rule 5 Draft. Players who signed at age 19 or older need to be protected within four seasons." In November 2021, even though the Rule 5 draft did not take place later that winter due to the lockout, all MLB teams had to finalize rosters. The Brewers did not deem any minor league player worthy of protection and no players were added to the 40-man. The player many considered as a possibility, OF/INF Korry Howell, would later be traded (along with catcher Brett Sullivan) to San Diego in the deal that netted catcher Victor Caratini. Howell was having a productive 2022 season prior to a season-ending injury in June and is currently ranked at #10 in Pipeline's most recent and heavily reconfigured Padres Top 30. But in many ways, Caratini has filled a critical role for the Crew. The Brewers don't regret the deal. Prior to the 2020 Rule 5, RHP's Alec Bettinger and Dylan File were added to the 40-man. Both were dropped from the 40-man this year, each clearing waivers. Bettinger was since released and has announced his retirement. File remains productive and the Brewers maintain his rights for the 2023 season. File is eligible to be re-added to the 40-man as shown below. Following this list of 62 eligible players, I'll briefly provide my thoughts on who I would protect if I were in the GM seat. But we really look forward to seeing your responses in the comments. Keep in mind that although they may be big leaguers soon, players like Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell, and Joey Wiemer do not need to be added to protect them from Rule 5. Their pro baseball journeys are too short at this point. It's today's MLB. Season-ending injury was a knee, not the 103 MPH arm. Not quite: Victor Castaneda, Justin Jarvis, Felix Valerio, Eduardo Garcia Just to wrap up, there is a Minor League Phase of the Rule 5 draft as well: For the Minor League phase, any player not protected on a 38-man Triple-A roster from that same group can be selected. Any team with a full 38-man Triple-A roster is not allowed to make a selection, but teams can make as many picks as they want until they get to 38 players. That doesn’t mean, as it does in the Major League phase, that a player selected has to stick at that level. If a team takes a player in the Minor League phase, it costs $24,500, paid to the original team. The selecting team can then send its new player to any level in its system it chooses. Without getting too deep into the woods, the Brewers will likely set their "AAA" roster to 35 to 36, leaving room for them to make a pick or two in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft if they wish. They will create that list from the 62 names above. Those not included will be eligible to be plucked in the minor league phase of Rule 5. Final note: You see names on the list above, namely Nashville C Brian Navarreto and RHP Marcus Walden, plus Biloxi RHP Arnaldo Hernandez and C Jason Lopez, that seemingly will not qualify for minor league free agency and do not appear on our previously published list of those players. We have reason to believe that these players are on current deals that extend their relationship with Milwaukee into 2023. View full article

  9. The rookie leaguers wrap up their seasons on Tuesday (today). Biloxi (September 18th) and Wisconsin and Carolina (each September 11th) have aways to go yet, while the AAA schedule extends all the way to Wednesday September 28th to meet the MLB need for available call-ups, rehab outings, etc. Today's report details the next-to-last games for those in the Arizona and Dominican complexes, though it's possible some players currently in Maryvale might find themselves in a Mudcat or Timber Rattler uniform in the coming weeks. Transactions: - RHP Jason Alexander recalled to MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville - replacing injured LHP Aaron Ashby - RHP Tyler Woessner (2022 6th round, Central Arizona JC) promoted to Low-A Carolina from ACL Brewers Gold - RHP Trevor Tietz promoted to Low-A Carolina from ACL Brewers Gold - Tietz had been with Carolina previously thru June 5th Final: ACL Brewers Gold 6, ACL Mariners 1, seven innings as scheduled Box Score / Game Log All nine in the lineup contributed for the 31-21 Gold squad in their 5th straight win. Despite the shiny record, the team has a run differential of -3. Arizona Complex League Playoff Qualifying Postseason begins on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2022. Three (3) division winners and one (1) wild card team (i.e., the team with the best winning percentage who is not a division winner). Unfortunately, the league standings seem to indicate the Brewers entry will fall just short of qualifying, with only Tuesday's game against their Crew Blue counterpart remaining on the schedule. The standings show an elimination number of three as of this post time, but that does not seem to be the case. With a walk and a base hit to go along with his 5th and 6th stolen bases, the ten-game pro debut of 18-year-old third baseman Luke Adams has been exciting (.357/.514/.536). Adams was drafted in the 12th round out of an Illinois high school. 15th round Florida JUCO catcher Satchell Norman is off to a similar ten-game pro start - .344/.447/.406. 19-year-old RHP Henrison Mota , a Dominican native in his 2nd season and first stateside, tossed three scoreless, striking out seven. His 3.62 ERA is fine on the surface, but Mota walked three here, representative of the 39 he has walked in 32.1 innings this season. Final: ACL D-Backs Black 4, ACL Brewers Blue 3, eight innings (scheduled for seven) Box Score / Game Log How the Blue Brew fared in the ghost runner inning may help explain their 19-33 record. Click on that Game Log link to follow along as the Arizona left fielder netted outfield assists both at third base and at home. Meanwhile a sharp fly ball double quickly ended things in the bottom of the inning. Prior to that, here's how the Crew tied things with a run in the top of the final regular inning - soft infield single by CF Jamal Zalm, to second on a wild pitch, and after two of his teammates struck out, stole third base and scored on a wild throw from the catcher. Three relative newcomers with a college background - 10th round 6'7" LHP Brian Fitzpatrick (Rutgers), and post-draft RHP signees Ryan Brady (Brigham Young) and Jonathan Beymer (Campbell) - combined for 5.2 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits and 13 strikeouts. At ages 22, 23 and 23 (Beymer turns 24 this week), such results are expected. Shortstop Daniel Guilarte stole three bases on as many attempts, and is now 8-for-11 in that department. I feel as though folks need to learn more about Guilarte, who may have surprised some with his jump to #16 on MLB Pipeline's Brewers Top 30 list. I strongly suggest you go the Top 30 list here and click on Guilarte's name to learn why the Brewers are high on him. Advancing his unique .235/.426/.510 line (.936 OPS in 51 AB's), 20-year-old catcher Jhonnys Cabrera reached base thrice including his 4th HR of the summer. Final: DSL PIT Gold 4, DSL Brewers #1 Squad 2, seven innings as scheduled Box Score / Game Log The 21-37 Uno Crew was down 4-0 thru four innings, then scored single runs in the final two innings, falling short. Giving a shoutout to catcher Ludwin Tejada, a LH bat in his true age 17 season (May 12th), single and walk here. The Dominican native has a .386 OBP with more walks than strikeouts in his smallish 60 AB sample. It was an uncharacteristically wild start for promising 18-year-old Venezuelan LHP Osbriel Mogollon, owner of a 2.74 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in an otherwise excellent debut campaign. Final: DSL Brewers #2 Squad 6, DSL Phillies Red 5, seven innings as scheduled Box Score / Game Log The 27-31 Deuce Men scored two in the 4th and three in the 5th thanks to sloppy Philly play to grab a 6-3 lead, and then held on for the win. Still listed as a catcher from when he first signed, Dominican native Juan Baez (he only turned 17 in June), has 18 errors split over 37 games at shortstop, nine at third base, and five at second base. Baez has posted a solid-enough .685 OPS with 17 stolen bases in 23 attempts. OF Irving Igualas only has a .592 OPS, but his name remains 80 grade. On Tuesday, as hinted at above, the rookies wrap things up, including one final faceoff between the two Maryvale teams. Nashville continues an extended road trip moving on to Durham, while Biloxi and Wisconsin return to their cozy confines. Carolina hits the road hoping to maintain momentum for a long-sought playoff berth. Tough to psyche oneself up for finishing up five more turns at bat and at least four on the mound upon arrival at the park Sunday given the score. We will see. Actually, Gabe Holt led off the top of the 5th with a double, the last play before the game was called. Rally has commenced! This was Holt's 175th professional game, but first starting in the outfield. LHP Nick Bennett had pitched very well in a stretch of four of five games between July 7th and August 3rd. This came after online buzz about adjustments made via discussions with contacts working with the Driveline development team. Since that stretch, Bennett had been touched for three home runs in each of his last two starts, however, and this effort was just the last thing you want, putting the staff out with a 1st inning exit. Things were promising early on - Final: Wisconsin 6, Cedar Rapids (Twins) 2, completion of Friday's suspended game Bullpen Closes Out Suspended Game for a Rattler Win - Wisconsin beats Kernels 6-2 Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log Two-run home runs from Wes Clarke and Joe Gray, Jr. were the main reason the T-Rats overcame a 1-for-10 RISP game. All three of Gray's RBI came with two out, and I will admit to severely underutilizing the "2-Out RBI" notation within my box score analyses this season. Two singles and a sacrifice fly for shortstop Antonio Pinero, one of the (now 18) players set to reach minor league free agency this fall. The initial list was 20 in our feature article on the topic, but the Tyler White trade to Atlanta and Saturday's release of LHP Andy Otero has dropped the number. Garrett Whitley, spotlighted from the Biloxi game above, is on the list. Final: Cedar Rapids (Twins) 8, Wisconsin 3, regularly scheduled game, seven innings Early Homer Can’t Save Wisconsin - Cedar Rapids rallies from early 3-0 deficit for 8-3 win Box Score / Game Log Especially at this time of year when post-draft roster adjustments are frequent, things tend to get a little promotion-happy. Shortstop Eduardo Garcia is an example of a player, bumped up to Wisconsin from Carolina on August 5th just a month after turning 20 years old, who has a long way to go despite his prospect pedigree. Oh, Garcia's strong defense and on-the-surface fine .262 batting average with the Mudcats are notable, but the 122-to-19 K-to-BB mark at Carolina was not. Since his promotion to Wisconsin, Garcia has yet to walk and has fanned 17 times in 47 at-bats. Gee, talk about raining on his parade here, three-run bomb on Saturday. Expect Eduardo to begin 2023 in Appleton. Speaking of promoted players, RHP Israel Puello was a bit opposite, in that his surface numbers didn't scream Carolina success (3-7, 5.51 ERA), but his peripherals (61 K's, just 17 walks in 49 innings) did. Puello's first three starts with Wisconsin after his June 28th promotion were nothing short of spectacular. His six starts since have been poor, kindly speaking. Coaches need to unlock something, it's been too long of a rough stretch. Reminder - Puello's just 21 years old (22 in October). 12. It's not just Nashville, currently holding a 2.5 game lead in their division, that has us looking to the farm playoff chases. Though Biloxi and Wisconsin are on the edges of their own division races (going to be very tough for each), a resurgent and reconfigured Carolina team now gives us reason to hope youngsters there will gain the pressure experience of a late push and actual postseason games. 13. There were lots of wins within the Brewers system Friday night, punctuated by the fact that several of the top prospects excelled. OK, so there was nothing but misery in the Dominican, but better that than reversed with the joy at the upper levels - those youngsters have years and years to lick their wounds. Let's get on with it! So, in Game One, old friend Payton Henry set off a bench-clearing dust-up and got Esteury Ruiz and attempted peace-maker Pedro Severin ejected in the process. Our daily "as it happens" thread on the Minor League Forum (always a suggested follow) has some of the details. Lost in the offense's prospect goodness was the sour effort of LHP Ethan Small in the opener. Small's lack of development in 2022 despite an on-the-surface "OK" AAA ERA of 3.50 has been a disappointment. Not only does Brice Turang have 25 steals, but he's only been caught twice. Lost in the recent Frelick hoopla is that young Brice's 2022 has been nothing short of tremendous in every facet, overlooking a mysterious one-month black hole of XBH's that coincided exactly with the June calendar. 15. As you'll read below, some of the 20 players looking at MiLB free agency this fall had already extended their Brewer tenures beyond that initial commitment. From a team perspective, the obvious way of keeping a player from walking away is to add him to the 40-man roster. Milwaukee did just this with Tyrone Taylor in October of 2018. The lone candidate among the players listed seems on the surface to be now-power reliever Lucas Erceg, but whether that ends up happening remains to be seen. In approximately ten days from now, I will release a similarly profiled piece on those players who qualify for consideration to be added to the Milwaukee 40-man roster in order to prevent another organization from plucking them away in the rule 5 draft in December, so be on the lookout for that. It may prove helpful if you bookmark this page for future access when needed. Listed alphabetically, current affiliate noted: Robbie Baker, RHP, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, age 27 Baker falls under the category of surprise minor league free agent qualifier as he only signed his initial pro contract in June 2018, when the Boston Red Sox made him a non-drafted free agent signing out of the University of Richmond. When the Red Sox released Baker as a victim of 2020 Covid roster-paring in May of that year, it effectively ended any seven-year hold that original contract had. When the Brewers signed Baker in August 2021 and assigned him to Carolina, they were not able to assume the seven-year control of the Boston contract. Instead, Baker signed for the remainder of 2021 and 2022. Clearly, Baker is much older than his competition, but he's in the midst of a near-perfect August, with only one baserunner reaching against him in four outings covering 9.1 innings (an HBP). The Brewers may choose to approach Baker to extend through 2023, one might think. Zack Brown, RHP, Nashville Sounds, age 27 It's a bit hard to believe that Brown, the Brewers 5th round pick out of the University of Kentucky in 2016 and Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2018, has yet to make his MLB debut, never mind be added to the 40-man roster. Brown did receive invites to big league spring training from 2019-2021 and was an alternate site participant in 2020. Brown, now strictly a reliever. is the owner of a 3.16 ERA and 1.08 WHIP with Nashville this summer, yet he has been bypassed by others, including those previously not on the 40-man roster, when callup opportunities were available. Brown should be able to find a landing spot elsewhere this fall. Harold Chirino, RHP, Biloxi Shuckers age 24 Earlier this year, I detailed the entirety of Chirino's Brewers baseball journey in this post. Chirino has been generally effective within the AA bullpen in 2022. He won't turn 25 until January and will be one of the younger minor league free agents available this fall. Yeison Coca, INF, Biloxi Shuckers, age 23 Speaking of being young, somewhat amazingly, Coca doesn't turn 24 until May 2023. Acquired from Boston as part of the Tyler Thornburg haul in June 2017, Coca was just short of two years of his initial signing with Boston. Because Coca was traded and not released, the Brewers maintained the full years of control over him. Known for his glovework, Coca has posted a .239/.304/.334 line in over 1700 minor league plate appearances (.638 OPS). Have glove, will travel. Organizations prize having defensive depth, and Coca likely will have suitors once he's deemed free. (On 9/25 - Signed to a minor league deal with a big league camp invite for 2023) Lucas Erceg, RHP, Nashville Sounds, age 27 Erceg won't turn 28 until next May. Most are very familiar with the career path of the 2016 2nd round pick, drafted as a third baseman. This past spring, Erceg was quite open about his struggles with alcohol and depression and journey to the mound, as detailed here by Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. To this very day, Erceg seems to be tantalizingly close to being a fireballing major league bullpen contributor. This will be a decision to watch for sure. Hobie Harris, RHP, Nashville Sounds, age 29 The bullpen corps at Nashville in 2022 has been pretty phenomenal and add Harris' name to the list of contributors. An easy-to-root-for 2015 31st round pick of the Yankees out of the University of Pittsburgh, Harris had a long stint in the New York system before he was taken in the minor league phase of the 2019 Rule 5 draft by Toronto. Milwaukee quickly signed him when he reached free agency for the first time last November. All 210 of Harris' pro appearances have been out of the pen. Much like Zack Brown this year, Harris has been the victim of having too much talent surrounding him in the Crew's AAA ranks. (On 10/19 - Signed to a minor league deal with a big league camp invite for 2023) Tyler Herb, RHP, Nashville Sounds, age 30 Herb was signed by the Brewers just prior to the start of the minor league season this past spring after time in the Seattle, San Francisco, and Baltimore systems. He was rightfully bumped up to Nashville after a month-plus with Biloxi. Primarily utilized as a starter, Herb has consistently posted solid numbers at the AA level and rough numbers at the highest minor league rung. It's inherently unfair to speculate, but it wouldn't appear Herb would be made a priority to bring back, but there is no risk in a minor league deal other than it's one less uniform to distribute to another. Josh Lindblom, RHP, Nashville Sounds, age 35 While Lindblom's three-year MLB contract for $9.125 million has proven to be mostly dead money on the big-league front, a rare David Stearns failed creative signing, Lindblom has at least been a useful innings-eater and clubhouse presence while with Nashville. Come this fall, the sides will shake hands and part. If Lindblom invested wisely, he's set for life. Matt Lipka, OF, Nashville Sounds, age 30 Lipka has been acquired by Milwaukee via trade in each of the 2021 and 2022 seasons to provide depth on the outfield grass. Even with the departures of David Dahl and Abraham Almonte, the sudden in-tandem promotions of the exciting law firm outfield trio of Frelick, Mitchell and Wiemer have relegated Lipka's role to fill-in as of the present. Carlos Luna, RHP, Biloxi Shuckers, age 25 (26 this September) Luna debuted with the Brewers way back in 2014 as a 17-year-old in the Dominican Summer League, and he absolutely dazzled in his DSL encore in 2015. We wouldn't see Luna again until 2018 when he finally came stateside after he lost two full seasons to Tommy John surgery and complications thereafter. Luna was an unfortunate Covid release in May of 2020 but was a welcome sight on a re-sign a year later. Luna has been serviceable in an unsung middle and long relief role with Biloxi this summer. (On 10/28 - Signed to a minor league deal with a big league camp invite for 2023) Andruw Monasterio, INF, Biloxi Shuckers, age 25 Another former international signing (Cubs, 2014) who is set to reach minor league free agency at a very young age, though this is actually Monasterio's second spin as it's how the Brewers enticed him last November with a big-league camp invite. Monasterio played in mostly a reserve role for Nashville this season until a June 28th assignment down to a depleted Biloxi roster rejuvenated Monasterio big-time (.983 OPS in 43 games). Surely a minor league manager's dream, but unless the Brewers just like the continuity and the "we know you" aspect of their rosters, it's likely Monasterio will slide on out. (Has since been released) Andy Otero, LHP, Nashville Sounds, age 30 Otero's baseball journey began way back in 2009 in the Braves' organization. After pitching at high-A, ironically with the Carolina Mudcats in 2015, Otero did not pitch in affiliated ball again until the Brewers signed the Panamanian native in May of 2021 and assigned him to Biloxi. Since then, Otero has been effective in the underappreciated swingman role he has effectively occupied. Antonio Pinero, INF, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, age 23 Midway through Pinero's rookie season with Boston in 2016, the Red Sox were penalized for playing loose with the draft signing rules, and the Brewers scooped up the youngster. The owner of a .570 career OPS, you may as well insert the Yeison Coca career path seen above here for Pinero. Defensively a rock star and offensively limited, it will be interesting to see if the Brewer brass chooses to say goodbye to both infielders without an offer to tempt either or both back. Corey Ray, OF, Biloxi Shuckers, age 27 (28 this September) The first round of the 2016 MLB amateur draft became pretty much a wasteland, but that doesn't ease the pain of getting nothing but a memorable big-league debut game base on balls and run scored out of the #5 overall pick. It seems the Brewers organization has come to terms that this fall will bring the official termination of a failed partnership. Maybe Ray will reach out to White Sox management to see if his South Side roots can reignite the talent within. Jose Sibrian, C, Carolina Mudcats, age 23 (24 this October) Yes, a low-A ball player makes the list. Sibrian has battled injuries for much of his Brewer tenure, missing all of 2017 and of course, 2020. The five games played with Carolina in September of 2021 incredibly marked his first games with a non-rookie level affiliate. Known for his defensive acumen, it's possible this is an easy offer of a 2023 contract, but both parties need to be amenable. (On 10/31 - Signed to a minor league deal with a big league camp invite for 2023) Jon Singleton, 1B, Nashville Sounds, age 30 (31 in September) If not fully familiar with Singleton's unique career path, revisit this Adam McCalvy feature from March. Singleton has had several highlight-worthy longball moments in 2022, has walked a ton, and has certainly contributed to the Sounds' success this season. It all made for some interest among fans, but it seems this will be a one-year visit in the Crew's system, barring a don't-jinx-it Rowdy Tellez serious injury down the stretch. (Has since been traded to San Francisco for cash considerations) Nash Walters, RHP, Biloxi Shuckers, age 25 Walters was Milwaukee's 3rd round pick in 2015 (90th overall) out of a Texas high school. Walters was actually a minor league free agent in the fall of 2021, but the Brewers and he were able to agree on a return for this year. The 2017 and 2018 seasons were lost to Tommy John surgery and a less-than-successful initial rehab. Losing 2020 didn't help. Walters has a 4.81 ERA and a more telling 1.28 WHIP in 39 appearances with the Shuckers in 2022. The very full and effective Nashville bullpen has served as a block in a sense to the AAA level. (Has since been traded to Atlanta for cash considerations) Tyler White, 1B/DH, Nashville Sounds, age 31 (32 in October) Like Jon Singleton, White has hardly been an anchor to the Sounds' lineup, but his numbers haven't truly popped either at .230/.357/.431. The Brewers didn't miss with this minor league signing, they just didn't reap an obvious reward beyond a healthy AAA contributor. If nothing else, the Singleton and White signings backfilled a pretty glaring system power need at 1B/DH heading into 2022. Garrett Whitley, OF, Biloxi Shuckers, age 25 Yes, Whitley's current age surprised me, too. We forget that amid the restocking of the Brewers system at the upper levels late last fall, Whitley's arrival after a disappointing seven-year run in the Rays' system, being drafted as a high schooler 13th overall in 2015, was included. Recently dropped to Biloxi to make room for the previously referred to bally-hoo'd prospect trio, a change of scenery to Milwaukee's system didn't ignite Whitley. Weston Wilson, IF/OF, Nashville Sounds, age 27 (28 in September) Some look at the term "organizational soldier" as demeaning, and it is true that I have come around in limiting my use of the wording, though I disagree in finding it truly derogatory. A 17th round pick out of Clemson in 2016, Wilson has done everything but catch in his solid contributor seven-year Brewer tenure. Wilson has managed a suitable .757 OPS along the way. I really hope we see Wilson netting a decent payday in minor league free agency for an organization realizing they'll be getting value in versatility. EDIT: Additions are Nashville C Pedro Severino and RHP JC Mejia.
  16. Five days after the conclusion of the World Series, minor league players who have reached the end of their seven-year commitment on their initial professional contract finally get to test free agent waters. In some cases, this is an opportunity to net a contract in the low six-figure range, which is not significant compared to big-league money, yet certainly can compare favorably to career earnings to date. While some players signed for considerable up-front money (hello, Corey Ray), many others did not. 17. On Friday, Nashville was victorious while the other Brewers full-season affiliate outposts all took losses. On Saturday, the opposite occurred. Despite the Sounds' defeat, Nashville maintains a slim two-game lead in the standings at 66-43, as the Guardians' Columbus squad has had a similarly strong season. Let's check in on that very competitive AAA game as well as see how all the current one-game winning streaks began! Oh, by the way, you'll read that on three occasions below I refer to consulting MiLB TV archives for play reviews. There is a "move ahead 15 seconds" feature. With the advent of the pitch clock, this feature is truly amazing. You literally bounce from one pitch to the next with a single seamless click. I find it much too remarkable (not to take away from all the fine broadcast work that happens in that industry, especially in the Brewers system). Transactions: RHP Peter Strzelecki recalled to MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville (replacing injured RHP Trevor Gott) RHP Justin Topa reinstated from 60-day injured list and optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers RHP Jonathan Beymer (undrafted free agent from Campbell University) assigned to ACL Brewers Blue RHP Patricio Aquino placed on ACL Brewers Gold's 60-day injured list Aquino last pitched on July 29th. The 19-year-old Dominican native is in his 2nd pro season, first stateside. In eight 2022 appearances (seven starts) covering 34.1 innings, Aquino has struck out 49, walked 16 and plunked five. Twice this season, he's pitched six scoreless innings, netting highlight videos from the Player Development Team: Final: Gwinnett (Braves) 7, Nashville 6, ten innings Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Comeback Bid Falls Short in Thriller - Nashville falls to 5-4 in extra-inning games Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log The Sounds, actually all the affiliates for that matter, make it difficult for us to highlight perspectives on the game outside of the fantastic write-ups they put together, even with such a classic affair like this contest. To appreciate how this game went down, a read of the summary is a must. Jake Cousins began his 30-day maximum rehab on July 26th. So, less than two weeks remain before the Brewers need to activate Cousins, who has looked strong thus far. Cousins could be called up or be optioned to Nashville. Either way, a 40-man roster spot would need to be opened up when he comes off the 60-day IL. There are four catchers on the Sounds roster, it was 40-man roster backstop Jakson Reetz who saw the action in this one. This is while Mario Feliciano is needed on the big-league roster in Omar Narvaez' absence. The Crew is carrying five catchers on their 40-man roster currently. Both managers were ejected in this game, with the Sounds' Rick Sweet booted while contesting an HBP of the opponent's foot by Cousins in the 9th. I went back and checked the video, Sweet was given a long leash - he was miffed that initially the home plate umpire indicated it was not an HBP but when the umpire crew got together, they decided it was. I thought it got the batter. But you have to envision Sweetie and his glorious moustache wearing the Margaritaville jersey (auction is wrapping up soon here). There are multiple very worthwhile video clips on the Nashville Twitter Media Feed this AM. Don't blink or you'll miss the flash speed of both Garrett Mitchell and Esteury Ruiz. We'll pick this one clip to duplicate here. Do the Brewers extend a 40-man roster spot to Lucas Erceg this fall to prevent him from leaving via minor league free agency? Final: Biloxi 3, Rocket City (Angels) 1 Castañeda Hurls Six Quality Innings as Shuckers Top Pandas 3-1 - Dillard Homers, Draws League-Leading 70th Walk Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log Dillard's .364 OBP this season is close to his pro career mark of .370. His splits vs LHP/RHP are not significant, seems he'd be better off in terms of a big-league projection if they were and he was absolutely mashing righties, but that's not the case. For him to carve out a Daniel Vogelbach-type path - remember, Dillard's only a first baseman now, he'll need a standout skill. Tristen Lutz came out of the game after grounding out in the 7th. I went back and watched the MiLB.TV archive, it wasn't the type of grounder where Lutz had to go all-out, and it didn't appear he was favoring anything at the end of the play. Closer Cam Robinson is going to be a very interesting name when it comes to Rule 5 protection this fall. Final: Wisconsin 5, South Bend (Cubs) 1 Wisconsin Uses Three Relievers and Hits Three Homers for the Win - García, Acosta, and Chourio go deep while Schanuel, Middendorf, and Baker shut down South Bend Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log That's one thing we may not have realized about Jeferson Quero - oh, we knew he had legs, it was the flow on top ?. Game is a microcosm - if your team can slug, you can win despite lack of an outstanding hit toolkit otherwise. If you can't slug, good luck even if you are piece-mealing best you can. XBH's certainly the key here. As long as I was in MiLB.TV mode, figured why not make it a trifecta. The next reliever was Ryan Middendorf. He pitched a scoreless fourth and a 1-2-3 fifth. In the sixth, Jordan Nwogu hit a high fly to left-center that was misplayed into a triple. Luis Verdugo knocked in Nwogu with a grounder to short to get South Bend on the scoreboard. At the 02:09:30 hour/minute mark here, Jackson Chourio had a heck of a time in the drizzle-dark sky surrounding what should have been a standard warning track catch and the ball landed a few feet from him. This game should have been a shutout for the Brady Schanuel - Middendorf - Robbie Baker triumvirate. By the way, did you know that Baker surprisingly qualifies for minor league free agency this fall? I hope to put the wraps on my BrewerFanatic article with the details on that qualifying list by this evening, so look for that! Final: Carolina 6, Delmarva (Orioles) 0 Cornielle Totals 10 Ks and Perez Homers in 6-0 Victory - Alexander Cornielle reached double digits in strikeouts while punching out 10 over six scoreless innings Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log Twice before within this season, the @BrewersPD Twitter feed had spotlighted Alexander Cornielle, here you'll see. I'm guessing the soon-to-be 21-year-old Dominican native will have a third highlight reel posted this week after this incredibly strong candidate for farmhand pitcher game of the year. No walks (one HBP)! Sorry Hedbert, you still should come back to Carolina for a month or two next spring and show you can dominate in other aspects of your game - we know you can occasionally do this: Six of first-round pick Eric Brown Jr's. ten professional base hits have gone for extra bases - triple and double in this game. Just 1-for-8 (one walk, no K's) in the two games since his return, but how great is it that Hendry Mendez is back after that scary crash landing on July 31st? Final: ACL Brewers Gold 8, ACL Brewers Blue 2, seven innings as scheduled Box Score / Game Log The Blue Man Group (now 17-30) was being shut out until rehabbing Timber Rattler first baseman Ernesto Martinez clubbed his 2nd Arizona home run in the final frame, OPS .969 in six games. Guessing there's a good chance he joins up with his T-Rat teammates on Tuesday. 2022 has been rough for 19-year-old third baseman Jheremy Vargas, .579 OPS in 84 Carolina games. Shaking off his recent demotion, 3-for-4 with two doubles for Team Blue in this one. For the 26-20 Golden Boys, six pitchers toed the slab (haven't mixed that phrase in enough this year), with five avoiding any runs against. In typical Jakob Brustoski fashion, his scoreless inning didn't lack for drama: leadoff double, wild pitch, K, K, walk, walk, K. In 27.2 IP between Carolina and Maryvale, the powerful hulking southpaw has fanned 64, walked 44, hit another eight, and thrown 28 wild pitches. I'll let you reattach your brain to your skull before you attempt to re-read that sentence. Nice game for 12th round teenager Luke Adams, 2-for-3, 2 SB, 2 RBI. He also played left field for the first time (3rd base in the few games prior). Final: DSL Nationals 5, DSL Brewers #2 Squad 0, seven innings as scheduled Box Score / Game Log In four of the last five Brewers DSL games, Teams #1 and/or #2 have been shutout. Thankfully, Team One was idle Saturday... RHP Daniel Corniel (not to be confused with today's Carolina star Alexander Cornielle) pitched pretty well, SS Demetrio Nadal reached three times, and catcher Eric Martinez (playing first base here) doubled and walked to lift his OPS to .861 on the season. All three mentioned are just 18 years old. On Sunday, Wisconsin plays opposite the big-league Crew, but all the other affiliates have early evening games you can sample after Milwaukee reclaims the NL Central lead. As is the norm, the rookie kids are idle until Monday. As always, thanks for reading! 19. The Sounds have blessed fans all season long with their exciting winning ways, and that was the case again on Friday night. As for the rest of the chain, not so much, and especially at the lower levels, where offensive production, or lack thereof, was glaring. Just because the fun ends after AAA, be sure to stick with the report to the end, thanks as always! I'm aware you just read this but it bears repeating within the tweet- Sal Frelick (3-for-4, 2 R, 2B, RBI, BB) is leading the International League with 16 hits in the month of August… My goodness, did the Brewers nail that 15th pick in the 2021 draft. Never mind helium, this is straight-out ready for takeoff stuff. Pull the trigger, Brewers brass. Credit where it's due to Pablo Reyes, heck of a season. Dylan File is still under team control for 2023. Frelick on base four times, Garrett Mitchell thrice, Brice Turang contributes with a sacrifice fly and a walk, whether with since-moved productive veterans or the latest infusion of rambunctious youth, the Brewers have done right by the folks of Nashville, Tennessee in 2022. Final: Rocket City (Angels) 14, Biloxi 5 Pair Of Big Innings Undo Shuckers - Brent Diaz Records Three Hit Night Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log A reminder that the moniker Rocket City is representative of the combined area of Madison, AL, the city of 50,000+ that is just eleven miles from Huntsville (pop. 150,000). I have many fond memories of the contacts I maintained in the media, the local fan sites, etc., back in the earliest days of Brewerfan. Very happy that the folks there have their new ballpark and didn't lose baseball altogether. As for their old once-deteriorated ballpark - In the Spring Season of 2023, Joe Davis Stadium will open its doors to unveil its renovation from a single-use baseball facility into a multisport venue ready for football, soccer, lacrosse, field hockey and ultimate Frisbee. The field will be artificial turf to maximize flexibility and accommodate intensive daily use. The listed 2,920 who pulled themselves away from the adjoining casino saw the Shuckers down only 4-3 through six, before things fell apart. Regardless of the personnel makeup, the Biloxi bullpen cumulatively has been either fantastic or disastrous in their mound efforts in 2022, with little in-between. This game fell in the latter category. This offense is going to be workmanlike effective but rarely individually spectacular for the remainder of the season, a veteran group in the what-you-see-is-what-you-get mold. Catcher Brent Diaz will be back for his 7th season of control in 2023, and his very solid efforts continued here on a three-hit night - The Shuckers posted an additional two video highlights on their Twitter Media feed. Final: Delmarva (Orioles) 2, Carolina 0 Mudcats Held to One Hit in 2-0 Loss in Delmarva - Jace Avina had the only hit in Carolina’s 2-0 loss to the Shorebirds on Friday night Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log Can we all admit it's been a really poor season for Hedbert Perez, now at .212/.264/.378? OK, 31 of 73 hits have gone for extra bases, but tons of work to do. He'll turn just 20 years old as the 2023 season begins. Capping that, Igualas was immediately caught trying to steal second base. The Dueces Wild club did not run wild on the basepaths. One of the two players who walked, power bat RF Yeison Perez, was also caught stealing in the top of the 4th, and concerningly immediately exited the game. Three Crew relievers combined for six innings of one-run ball. And yes, four straight shutouts to end your report. Only one game each in the Dominican and Maryvale on Saturday. 21. The big-league day off allowed Brewer fans to catch their collective freefall breaths. It being a Monday, there were only rookie level games to follow, but we're here to provide those details for you. Transactions: 2022 draft round in parentheses 3B Ben Metzinger (7) assigned to Wisconsin Timber Rattlers from ACL Brewers Blue. SS Robert Moore (2B - compensation round) assigned to Carolina Mudcats from ACL Brewers Blue. SS Branlyn Jaraba assigned to Carolina Mudcats from ACL Brewers Gold. SS Eric Brown Jr. (1) assigned to Carolina Mudcats from ACL Brewers Gold. C Alex Hall assigned to Carolina Mudcats from Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. C Jeferson Quero assigned to Wisconsin Timber Rattlers from Carolina Mudcats. SS Jheremy Vargas assigned to ACL Brewers Blue from Carolina Mudcats. 3B Luke Adams (12) assigned to ACL Brewers Gold C Matt Wood (4) placed on ACL Brewers Blue's 7-day injured list C Darlin Lora placed on ACL Brewers Blue’s 60-day injured list C Felipe Valderrama placed on ACL Brewers Blue’s 60-day injured list Carolina Mudcats released SS Luis Silva. Carolina Mudcats released RHP Junior Montero. Our own @damuelle detailed the pro journeys of Silva and Montero here. Final: ACL Brewers Gold 9, ACL Athletics 3 Box Score / Game Log Gold moves to 25-18, 2nd place in their division, two games out of first (standings) The victors scored early (up 5-0 after three innings) and late (two runs in the 8th, two runs in the 9th). The five Brewer pitchers combined to strike out 15, but they also walked eight, plunked two others, and threw five wild pitches. The Athletics stranded 12, and were 1-for-8 with RISP. Starter Henrison Mota's ERA is 4.05, but all the peripherals are poor. No immediate callups imminent for the arms used in this one. It's been a rough 2022 for OF Eduarh Colina, but the 19-year-old RH bat out of Venezuela homered (right-center) and doubled. This was the professional debut for 18-year-old third baseman Luke Adams, the Crew's 2022 12th round pick out of an Illinois high school. Adams struck out, was HBP (scored a run), and lined out in his three plate appearances. 15th round catcher Satchell Norman had two hits including a double and is off to a nice start five games into his career. He also stole his 3rd base in four attempts (catcher speed!) and committed his first error (throwing). Triple, single, and walk to pad the July numbers even further for this native of The Netherlands: Final: ACL Reds 7, ACL Brewers Blue 6, seven innings as scheduled Box Score / Game Log Now 17-26, the Blue Man Group did their Golden buddies no favors by losing to the first-place Reds. The best thing done by the two Brewer arms was get four double plays in just seven frames. Timber Rattler first baseman Ernesto Martinez pulled a ball to right for a home run in his 2nd rehab outing. 2022 9th round JUCO catcher Tayden Hall, like Satchell Norman in the prior game, is off to a nice start at the plate, 1.089 OPS through his first five games. Final: DSL Brewers #1 Squad 5, DSL D-Backs Black 1, seven innings as scheduled Box Score / Game Log How convenient another player highlighted by Brewers Player Development shined again on Monday: So, after Monday's game, that tweet can read 32 K's and 10 BB's in 27 innings. These comments are from my co-reporter @Joseph Zarr in our Minor League Forum thread - Another game completed for the DSL Brewers 1, and yet another LHP Osbriel Mogollon stellar outing. This young lefty continues to shine: 5 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 1 R, 5 K 18-year-old lefty batting catcher, Edgardo Ordonez, continues to catch my eye: 2-for-3 today with his 3rd double and two runs scored batting clean-up. He had gone 0-for-7 to start August, but today's numbers are more in line with his season to date: 78 AB's, .282 BA, .803 OPS. Ordonez also threw out a runner attempting to steal 2nd base where he is currently throwing out 35% of base runners. Luis Lara and Johnny Severino have both cooled off recently - they went a combined 0-for-6 today; 0 K; 0 BB. And, alas, Severino commits a fielding error at shortstop. He now has 18 errors combined between shortstop and third base in 44 games played and over 272 1/3 innings in the field. Final: DSL Mets #1 Squad 4, DSL Brewers #2 Squad 2 Box Score / Game Log Once again via @Joseph Zarr - Another Yeison Perez double - his 15th of his season. While the Brewers 2 successfully swiped four bases, C Brayan Oropeza strutted his improved results throwing out all three Mets' SB attempts. Also, of note here: whereas Jhonny Severino continues to induce 'concern' or valid questions abound about his error-prone ways between his time at shortstop and third base, 17-year-old infield prospect Juan Baez has quietly caught my eye. Baez has had a productive season at the plate, and he has half the errors of Severino. Plenty of time for both players to continue to grow, but it's worth noting Baez is making a name for himself in 2022. Baez finished his day 2-for-3, 1 RBI, 1 2B (his 8th), 1 K, and 1 SB (his 12th). On the season, he is now hitting .286 with a .729 OPS in 154 AB's (typically batting second in the line-up). While the Mudcats hit the road, the other three full-season affiliates all get to enjoy home cooking this week. The rookies all continue play in what will be an eight-game Tuesday night. It also appears that MiLB is now including games from all levels, full-season and rookie complex, in their organizational scoreboard link we provide below, nice.
