It was an upbeat Friday night for the most part on the Brewers farm. Southpaw Robert Gasser continues to show the parent club they were wise to make sure he was worth being targeted in the Josh Hader deal. Biloxi's collection of veterans about to hit minor league free agency aren't going quietly. Fans in Appleton were thoroughly entertained in a number of ways as the T-Rats are rolling to wrap up their season. While Carolina did stumble, the Mudcats did help us reach back into the archival jukebox with video and lyrics that encapsulate how all Brewers fans are feeling right now about the big-league shortcomings. Transactions: - RHP Justin Topa returned to AAA Nashville, then immediately recalled to MLB Brewers (replacing injured RHP Freddy Peralta) - OF Jonathan Davis sent on rehab assignment to High-A Wisconsin from MLB Brewers Final: Nashville 9, Charlotte (White Sox) 1 Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of your Link Report routine: Sounds Extend Division Lead, Rout Knights - Robert Gasser tosses gem, Jon Singleton and Patrick Dorrian homer as Nashville evens series Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log First off, let's acknowledge that this nun in Charlotte would have had a better first inning than Jason Alexander Friday night - We don't know why Brice Turang had missed time since last playing on Saturday the 3rd, but it was nice to see him back at shortstop and not eased in with a DH role. We regularly link to Voice of the Sounds' Jeff Hem's pre-game interviews on our Minor League Forum, be sure you listen to Infield Coordinator Bob Miscik discuss Turang in detail here. Joey Wiemer on base four times including two walks and that .442 OPS for the month of July is a wondrously distant memory and outlier. Speaking of the pre-game interviews, be sure to bounce to the 4:30 minute mark of Manager Rick Sweet's latest chat here for his commentary on Wiemer's continued development. Not burying the lead - LHP Robert Gasser's line was very impressive for AAA start #2, just one walk, one HBP. Final: Biloxi 8, Mississippi (Braves) 3 Knarr's Quality Outing Supported By Early Runs In 8-3 Win - Ray, Whitley and Clarke Homer For Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log Plenty of video highlights via the Shuckers' Twitter Media Feed. Wes Clarke and Nick Kahle will be back in 2023, Corey Ray and Garrett Whitley will not as minor league free agents. Felix Valerio now 30-for-39 in stolen base attempts in 2022. LHP Brandon Knarr making 15 starts with one more to go at the AA level this year portends well, remember, this is only his 2nd pro season. Fireballing RH reliever Zach Vennaro's season-long game log reveals six-run blow-up outings in June, August and September. Plenty of zeroes, but oh my, those poor outings decimate the year-end numbers. Final: Wisconsin 6, Beloit (Marlins) 5 Eighth-Inning Rally Does It for the Rattlers…Again! - García homers twice, including late, game-tying blast, for Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log What a final week the T-Rats are giving us and fans in Appleton! You can tell Voice of the Rattlers Chris Mehring is pumped, that is one wonderfully beefy game report. "Beefy" as the Wisconsin Brats, heh... The video package is as glorious as those "Brats" uniforms. There are literally five or six truly eye-opening moments, Be sure to note how right fielder Arbert Cipion covered first base - say what? Yes, wow. Eduardo Garcia is a physical specimen, do we have to wait until a big-league debut before his MiLB Player Page no longer lists him at 6'2", 160? Garcia only turned 20 in July; he was limited by injury to just ten games in 2019, lost 2020 as did so many others. The strikeout issues are clear, the OBP is weak, but have Garcia open in Wisconsin in 2023 and hope the spring training developments truly blossom. AUDIO via the Rattler Radio Soundcloud: "The Timber Rattlers rallied in the eighth inning to win a game from the Beloit Sky Carp for the third game in a row. Chris Mehring and Kyle Lobner talk about Eduardo Garcia's big night and a few other details. Then, Joe Ayrault joins the podcast for more discussion after a win on Bratoberfest!" Not one, but two jersey auctions? Yeah, the Jackson Chourio options are already climbing, less with Jeferson Quero, that may be where the value is. The Carlos F. Rodriguez and Stiven Cruz jerseys are there for the taking for those speculating on the future big-league aspirations of the RHP's. Final: Myrtle Beach (Cubs) 10, Carolina 3 Mudcats Drop Third Straight 10-3 in Myrtle Beach - Two three-run home runs in the first and second innings proved to be too much for the Mudcats Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log The Pelicans do a nice job with their own YouTube game highlights, though clearly here it's mainly a lowlights feature for Carolina. You'll see Robert Moore's RBI single, and the two-RBI base hit of Jace Avina (though to be honest, Avino's shallow fly to center field should have been caught). First round pick Eric Brown, Jr. with two hits to push his Mudcat OPS to .786 in 21 games. Remember how we just indicated Eduardo Garcia would benefit from beginning 2022 in Wisconsin? That's a conflict with Brown's trajectory, though with Brown's draft status, Biloxi may be his April landing spot. Player Development placement/assignments are such a jigsaw puzzle. It's been quite a while since we entered the BrewerFanatic Minor League Link Report Musical Time Machine, but my mention of "Jigsaw" just now brings us back to 1975 and an amazing musical arrangement for one of the greatest of all the one-hit wonders. On top of that, please read/listen to the lyrics of "Sky High" and tell me it's relatable to our Milwaukee big-league fandom right now. Blown round by the wind Thrown down in a spin I gave you love I thought that we had made it to the top I gave you all I had to give Why did it have to stop? You've blown it all sky high By telling me a lie Without a reason why You've blown it all sky high You, you've blown it all sky high Our love had wings to fly We could have touched the sky You've blown it all sky high Up, round, I've flown Then down, down like a stone I gave you love I thought that we had made it to the top I gave you all I had to give Why did it have to stop? Props to lead singer drummers (and lip-synching for these classic TV performances) Nashville has the earliest Saturday start at 4:35 Central. Promising RHP's Logan Henderson, the afore-mentioned Stiven Cruz, and Justin Jarvis will be toeing the rubber for their respective teams. Enjoy your Saturday, everyone! Saturday saw pitching dominance in multiple locales, though especially of note was youngster Carlos Rodriguez' effort for the Timber Rattlers, and the mound work of the opponent vs, the Shuckers. The Nashville and Carolina starters had excellent evenings of their own. Don't worry, we have offensive highlights as well, and the umpires managed to add their own level of dominance to the mix. Let's check it all out! Transactions: None Final: Nashville 4, Memphis (Cardinals) 1 Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of your Link Report routine: Tyler Herb Deals Sounds to Another Win - Right-hander fires season-high eight innings at First Horizon Park Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log Is it possible the Brewers work out a 2023 contract with RHP Tyler Herb for his age 31 season? Sure, and one would think Nashville is a welcome spot for anyone at the AAA level - don't overlook that when luring each season's incoming minor league free agent crop. Let's not oversell Herb's 2022 AAA efforts - he does have a .294 batting average against and scattered seven hits and an HBP here - but with no walks Saturday, he now is posting a 4-to-1 K-to-BB ratio. Managers tend to like that. With Esteury Ruiz ' call-up, the Sounds have only one non-catcher bench player. On this night, that was INF Andruw Monasterio getting the night off with Sal Frelick resting his legs a bit in the DH spot. Sal also played some early-game pinball - Brice Turang is so smooth - When the AAA affiliate is 29 games over .500, as they are today, it's likely we're going to want to see several of the contributors back regardless of their free agent status. Add 29-year-old Hobie Harris and his 1.72 ERA / 1.11 WHIP to the list. That being said, it's a two-way conversation and Mr. Harris is going to have offers to choose from. Turang on base four times, Frelick thrice -- my goodness, they are dynamic. Final: Rocket City (Angels) 8, Biloxi 0 Biloxi No-Hit by Rocket City - First Time in Franchise History Biloxi Has Been No Hit Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log While that game summary you just read was workmanlike, let's face it, the perspective is going to be more interesting from the other side of the glass, and we can all appreciate when history was made. MiLB.com's feature story adds more juice to the evening, even as Brewers fans may not be thrilled. Despite being drafted in 2021 (and 11th round at that), Chase Silseth actually has already made seven big league starts earlier this season (6.59 ERA, somewhat understandable). All three Trash Pandas pitchers on this night were from that draft class, which was memorable because the Angels used all 20 draft picks on pitchers. If you wish to see bats flailing, there's this video. Trying to be creative, but I have no guesses on what the three words may have been. Ump show. Felix Valerio was back at a more familiar second base after patrolling center field Friday night. With Wes Clarke behind the dish, three of the four bench bats were also catchers - Brent Diaz, Nick Kahle, and Jason Lopez. All four backstops are scheduled to return in 2023, the Brewers do love those warm bodies behind the plate (and for all those spring training bullpens). Final: Wisconsin 4, Peoria (Cardinals) 1 Rodríguez Perfect in Wisconsin’s 4-1 Win - Rattler righty records nine strikeouts over six perfect innings Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log Video is embedded in Chris Mehring's fine game summary, but for those of you who are click-averse for some reason (too early on a Sunday morning?), here you go - Refresher - Carlos Rodriguez doesn't turn 21 until three days after Thanksgiving. Though a native of Nicaragua, he was not an international signee, but a 2021 draft pick out of Florida Southwestern State JC. Perhaps based on his 2021 workload, Rodriguez didn't debut until this season. Here are the 2021 draft day scouting reports we linked to upon his selection. Carlos certainly is a viable choice for 2022 Brewers Organizational Pitcher of the Year, and his breakout within a debut campaign is fantastic for the organization. Ump show #2 on this night? MiLB.TV subscribers, not much to see, but go to the 01:27:00 hour/minute mark in the third inning here. Speedster Arbert Cipion squibbed a ball to short, and the Peoria shortstop made one heck of a play. Called out, Cipion flashed the safe sign as he crossed the bag. Cipion must have said something, as he was ejected, though we don't see the dramatics of it all. First base coach Liu Rodriguez had a distanced discussion with the umpire, but it must have been the same three words for Cipion that Justin Jarvis used with Biloxi. Jackson Chourio was 1-for-5, three K's as the DH, Jeferson Quero 2-for-3, three RBI, one K whil manning the plate. How many close games have the Timber Rattlers been involved in? Well, Cam Robinson, since twice-promoted, and James Meeker, have combined for 34 T-Rat saves in 2022 03:07:00 hour/minute mark, again here for subscribers. Third baseman Ben Metzinger, already with a two-hit night, is drilled on a high fastball and spends the next couple of minutes crouched over while being attended to. Seemed to hit the left forearm (perhaps, inconclusive) but the right-handed hitting Metzinger would stay in the game. He would, however, be replaced in the field for the 9th inning immediately thereafter. Hopefully OK, maybe a day off Sunday to take advantage of Monday off. Final: Carolina 8, Columbia (Royals) 7 Jaraba and Castillo Homer in Tense 8-7 Victory Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log Overlooking the unwanted late-inning dramatics, it was a nice four-inning start for 21-year-old 2022 11th round RHP Cameron Wagoner our of Eastern Michigan. It was his 2nd appearance and first start for the Muddies, and he's yet to give up a run in eight innings, fanning ten and walking just one. Spreading the love - a box score that each player in the Carolina lineup can appreciate. Double and single for 1st round SS Eric Brown, Jr. As Voice of the Mudcats Greg Young, Jr. notes - "Despite the victory, Carolina’s elimination number fell to three with only seven games remaining." Darn, the Mudcats may very well finish in second place in both the first and second half standings. To the delight of the Timber Rattlers' traveling party, Peoria scheduled a Sunday night game for their home finale, sigh. Thanks for reading and have a heck of a Sunday, everyone. *There seems to be a technical issue with the normal link we provide for standings and sortable stat pages. We'll look to rectify soon. I was 13 years old in that Bicentennial 1976 year and trying to build my budding Brewer fandom any way I could. Having Travers as a Massachusetts kid added to the fun. The '76 Brewers lost 95 games, but they were in the AL East and would make their Fenway visits, thrilling for Travers no doubt. Thanks for the article!

After only four starts at the AA level, the Brewers moved their shiny new toy, LHP Robert Gasser, to Nashville for his AAA debut. Gasser squeezed a whole bunch into his evening, as we'll outline below. Corey Ray reminded us of all the "what ifs?" we'll be asking after he departs in minor league free agency this fall. Jackson Chourio should wear a Jackson Chourio costume this Halloween, he'd win every contest he enters. Carolina enjoyed the first few innings of their game, but little thereafter. Let's see how it all went down! Transactions: Timber Rattler LHP Karlos Morales ' MiLB Player Page still indicates "suspended" for his innocent role in the Wrestling Night dust-up, but he clearly is back as he played a big part Friday night. When this player eventually makes his way to Appleton for Lederhosen Night, he'll feel right at home: Final: Nashville 6, Memphis (Cardinals) 5 Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of your Link Report routine: Sounds Hold Off Redbirds at First Horizon Park - Rick Sweet wins 224th game as Nashville manager Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log Prized trade acquisition LHP Robert Gasser 's AAA debut was eventful, to be sure. Walk-walk-K-K (both looking)-double steal-F8 for a scoreless 1st. K-groundout-walk-walk-popout for a scoreless 2nd. Single-8-4 double play-K for a scoreless 3rd, Sal Frelick doing Sal Frelick things all night OK, so a roundabout way to get to three scoreless, and then there's a five-run Memphis 4th. The game summary mentions consecutive two-run base hits to trim the Sounds' lead to 6-5. The game log will come in handy for you here to get the full breadth of that 4th inning. Note the two-run double deflected off the glove of Weston Wilson that drove Gasser from the game. Watching it live at the time, certainly not an error on a tough play that brought Wilson to the left field wall, but it was hit very high, and Wilson had time to get under it but kind of semi-leaped thinking it was going over perhaps. If asked, Wilson would probably say he should have caught it. That doesn't excuse Gasser's six walks, but it would have made for a slightly more appealing final line. Speaking of Wilson, the minor-league-free-agent-to-be had done this earlier: Used properly in single-inning doses, RHP Trevor Kelley can be so nasty. He was money locking down the save with his side-winding arsenal. I think he may stick on the 40-man all offseason and be looked upon to contribute at the MLB level in 2023, we'll see how things evolve. Final: Biloxi 4, Rocket City (Angels) 2 Knarr's Seven Sterling Innings Helps Secure Shuckers' Win - Ray Homers Twice for Biloxi Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log Sterling is used as an adjective a lot more within the sports world than outside of it. I like it here. 24-year-old southpaw Brandon Knarr has had a heck of a year between his 10 Timber Rattler starts and 14 with the Shuckers. Yes, most of the heavy-lifting was at the lower-level, but Knarr has been a horse, avoiding the blow-up outing, never leaving without completing at least four innings, and only twice not making it through five frames. The peripherals are there to match as evidenced by a glance at his MiLB Player Page. Surely his managers appreciate Knarr's consistent efforts. Only four outfielders currently on this squad, and with Corey Ray getting the night at designated hitter, it was none other than 5'7" Felix Valerio patrolling center field for the first time in his professional career. It wasn't out of desperation but by choice as either Garrett Whitley or Terence Doston could have been stationed in center with Valerio in a more familiar left field. Valerio handled the two fly balls sent his way - neither apparently requiring a leap at the wall. As for Ray, Corey will have no difficulty finding suitors in minor league free agency aiming to finally get consistent production out of him. Both of his home runs, along with other highlights, are available via the Shuckers' Twitter Media Feed. Final: Wisconsin 6, Peoria (Cardinals) 1 Chourio Powers Wisconsin Past Peoria - Brewers outfield prospect breaks tie with his fourth homer in five games Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log Well, between the Sounds and T-Rats, at least the St. Louis organization is being handed losses somewhere. One more homestand, fans, just one more Appleton homestand. See him while you can. Hello again, just-turned-21-year-old RHP Alexander Cornielle . Folks, when you do attend that Timber Rattler final homestand, you have a chance to see Cornielle, and 20-year-old RHP's Stiven Cruz and Carlos Rodriguez in a starting role. Not to mention 21-year-old RHP Israel Puello , who has flashed brightly at times in Appleton. That is a very exciting and exceedingly young foursome. Look for Rodriguez, with his JUCO background, to be the one to start 2023 in Biloxi - I wouldn't mind seeing the other three back at Wisconsin minimally for April and May 2023, but surely the young men's ambitions (and spring wardrobes for the location) have other things in mind. Talk about the fruits of one's labor and an organization seeing a development plan through, as 6th year LH reliever Karlos Morales (one of those years was the lost Covid season) has had a 2022 he'll remember for sure. The recently turned 23-year-old should be in Biloxi at some point next summer. I'm sure other since-released players might roll their eyes at the term "seeing a development plan through", but those are certainly stories for other days. Final: Columbia (Royals) 17, Carolina 8 Carolina Pitchers Walk 14 in 17-8 Loss - The Mudcats led 5-0 after the third and 7-3 after the fifth before losing 17-8 on Friday night Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log Feel free to review just the first three innings of the game log - Mudcats up 5-0 after three. Go ahead, review another two innings after that - Mudcats up 7-3 after five. When you see those three double-digit ERA's of the three Mudcats recently promoted Maryvale pitchers, you're looking at a combined seven outings only. Regardless, that's some ugly stuff going on there. We just discussed all the Carolina pitching talent that has made its way up to Wisconsin, clearly backfilling is not always easy. The Mudcats reached base via HBP four times, including two by CF Jace Avina, who now remarkably has been plunked 18 times vs. 194 AB's in 2022. Compare that to Wisconsin single-season HBP leader Darrian Miller's 22 HBP's vs. 293 AB's. That's 9.3% for Avina, 7.5% for Miller. Avina did face a bunch of wild rookie arms while in Maryvale, though. Nice to see rehabbing Max Lazar's brief but effective start. Carolina has a 4:00 Central start Saturday, with the other clubs playing in the early evening. Thanks for joining us during this late stretch of the Minor League Link Report season. I'll catch you again Sunday AM. OK, so that's a headline that will grab your attention. Yet despite that wild moment, there were plenty of things to highlight from a pure baseball perspective on the Milwaukee farm as well. Let's kick off your Sunday morning perusal! Transactions: From Friday night's Link Report: "Health concerns first from the 3rd inning of Biloxi's Game One - Tristen Lutz was drilled by a pitch right off the protective left ear of his batting helmet, or perhaps just a touch above it. MiLB TV subscribers, go the 01:57:00 hour/minute mark here. Clearly shaken up but somehow managing to stay on his feet, Lutz was immediately whisked into the dugout. Hopefully OK, and surely, Tristen was placed on concussion-watch protocol immediately. Best wishes, young man." On Saturday, the Brewers placed Lutz on the Biloxi 7-day IL. And yes, there was this ?, congratulations Garrett! Milwaukee Brewers selected the contract of OF Garrett Mitchell from Nashville Sounds. Final: Nashville 3, Durham (Rays) 2 Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of your Link Report routine: Sounds Edge Durham - Outfield Trio of Frelick, Ruiz and Wiemer Each Drives in a Run Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log We are witnessing one of the greatest affiliate seasons in Brewers' history. That the Sounds are only 3.5 games up in the standings is only a testament to how well the Guardians' Columbus club has played. These two-city but twelve-game road trips in the new MiLB schedule format are absolute beasts, and the Sounds, as noted in the summary you just read, are 8-3 heading into Sunday's finale. We'll often utilize the "Three Quick Strikes" format - well, the Sounds' staff beat us to that long ago, and their notes at the back end of the summary on Esteury Ruiz, Sal Frelick, Joey Wiemer, Hobie Harris, Trevor Kelley and Tyler Herb are spot-on and eye-opening. On a side note, I'm surprised that spelling "Esteury" correctly is coming pretty naturally. The 7th inning game log reveals a rather tame set of circumstances, but there was something within the mix, including a base on balls by Lucas Erceg, that got pitching coach Jeremy Accardo ejected. For those of you still glancing at batting average (hard not to, even in this era of box scores), Mario Feliciano 's double and single have him up to .291, he doesn't have enough plate appearances to appear among International League leaders. (Brice Turang at .289 does, and he sits at 16th.) Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Chattanooga (Reds) 2, Biloxi 1 Tight Contest Ends In 2-1 Shuckers' Defeat - Biloxi and Chattanooga Conclude Series with Doubleheader Sunday Box Score / Game Log Let's just agree that those Mardi Gras jerseys the Shuckers sported Saturday (revisit game summary) are, well, they are something. Glove work gets the spotlight in a low-scoring affair - Both players highlighted, Garrett Whitley and Yeison Coca, qualify for minor league free agency at season' s end. Five of the Shuckers eight hits came from Gabe Holt and Brent Diaz at the bottom of the order, but the dreaded 0-for-9 with RISP and ten LOB doomed this team effort. For only the 4th time all season (23 starts), Brandon Knarr walked more than two batters. Yet he tossed six shutout frames here despite four free passes, pitching on nine days' rest. It's been a very solid season for the 24-year-old "undrafted" southpaw, who only wears that moniker due to the five-round 2020 Covid draft situation. Very rare hiccup for a true undrafted player, RHP "Have luggage, will travel" Ryan Middendorf, who stumbled in his AAA debut. Since signing back on June 14th, the 24-year-old has played in Maryvale, Carolina, Wisconsin and now Biloxi. We just kicked off an Arizona Fall League Predictions Thread over on the Minor League Forum, and Middendorf's name has already been dropped. With Biloxi not challenging for a title and high school and college football season prep well underway, it's no surprise those local Biloxi TV station reports on the Shuckers dried up many weeks ago, Football's kind of big down there... Final: Lansing (Athletics) 3, Wisconsin 2 Rattlers Drop Another Close One to Lugnuts - Lugnuts beat Rattlers by a 3-2 Score on Second Straight Night Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log (Tomorrow meaning Sunday...) Guess whose jersey auction is generating the most interest - today's the final day of this auction. Major fan-boy here, and I can promise you that WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle most certainly does not suck, but this is fun history - Wrestling diehard and Voice of the T-Rats Chris Mehring , along with Angle in the booth, got to witness history, we are so happy for Chris on this day - and oh, Darrien Miller, too! Only at WWE night in Appleton could this have happened, and this may be the most ridiculous reason to initiate a brawl in history - really?! That Lansing player is going to be hit with quite the punishment. Oh, by the way, there was an actual full game played, including promising RHP Alexander Cornielle 's Midwest League debut, and the game summary linked above includes full highlights of that. Final: Kannapolis (White Sox) 11, Carolina 4 Early Deficit Too Much in 11-4 Loss to Kannapolis - The Mudcats fell to 4.5 games back of first with Saturday’s loss Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log Just-turned 19-year-old Yujanjer Herrera made his second start for the Mudcats since his promotion from Maryvale. This is what his first start looked like: Unfortunately, as the game summary painfully indicates, his second outing did not nearly go as well in one of the rougher prospect game lines of 2022. Props to RHP Jeferson Figueroa for stepping in and bringing a sense of normalcy to the proceedings. First round pick Eric Brown Jr. missed a fourth game, and with Monday off, a Sunday appearance would be nice but is probably unlikely. Sunday finds all four affiliates in action, naturally, but it's worth noting that the Shuckers play two, the Sounds have a later-than-usual 4:05 Central start, the Timber Rattlers game is the last to be broadcast on local Green Bay TV this season, and the noontime Central Mudcats road game is MiLB TV's Free Game of the Day, so check out rehabbing RHP Max Lazar. Misc. Minor League Alumni News & Notes
Jim Goulart replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
-
Friday saw a mixed bag of results, though contending teams Nashville and Carolina were victorious in their road tilts. Biloxi players finally got a chance to open their series after three days of rainouts and split their doubleheader efforts. Wisconsin had a disappointing evening. Along the way, there were two scary moments in which players were forced to immediately be pulled from the game. Some top prospects excelled. Here we go with another busy report! Transactions: - INF/OF Pablo Reyes optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers (creating space for the reinstatement of INF/OF Jace Peterson) - RHP Arielbi Gonzalez promoted to Low-A Carolina from ACL Brewers Blue - RHP Yerlin Rodriguez promoted to Low-A Carolina from ACL Brewers Gold Final: Nashville 11, Durham (Rays) 8 Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Wiemer, Sounds Slug Past Durham - Joey Wiemer Hits Two of Nashville’s Four Homers in Road Victory Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log First order of business was confirming that Sal Frelick was in fact simply enjoying a day off (he was). A thank you to Spencer Michaelis for splicing these out from the road Bulls broadcast. The Joey Wiemer blasts are in reverse chronological order - In a down season in terms of average and OBP, Wiemer has 19 home runs and is 29-for-32 in stolen base attempts. Wish my down seasons in life were as productive. Take a gander at Wiemer's month-to-month splits. We may never know the extent of the still unconfirmed hand-related woes that apparently impacted his June and July, but with his promotion, Brewers brass saw past that impact. The roadrunner Sounds only attempted two stolen bases, but both Esteury Ruiz and Garrett Mitchell were successful (naturally). Although not snapped when he was with Nashville, have to love the photo of Ruiz sitting atop his MiLB Player Page. When they weren't crushing dingers, the Sounds were 4-for-5 with RISP. Take note, big league club. Not a stellar mound night, Dylan File 106 pitches in just 4.1 innings, and while Cam Robinson opened a get-some-work-in 9th with single-walk-two RBI double, he immediately buckled down to retire the final three batters. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final, Game One: Chattanooga (Reds) 4, Biloxi 2 Box Score / Game Log Final, Game Two: Biloxi 11, Chattanooga 5 Box Score / Game Log Warren Drives in Six Across Two Games as Shuckers Split Doubleheader - Whitley Homers, Walks Four Times for Biloxi Health concerns first from the 3rd inning of Game One - Tristen Lutz was drilled by a pitch right off the protective left ear of his batting helmet, or perhaps just a touch above it. Best wishes, young man. Thomas Dillard saw his first 2022 defensive action at a position other than first base when he started for Lutz in left field of Game Two, and wouldn't you know, had an outfield assist. Don't expect days off for Corey Ray or Garrett Whitley while Lutz is sidelined, and Terence Doston remains on the roster and entered for Lutz in Game One. Thanks again, Spencer - a couple of filthy pitches from LHP Robert Gasser here. Gasser deserved a better fate in Game One, as the doubleheader summary detailed well. Gasser walked one, hit one batter, and fanned nine in 5.2 IP, touched for two solo home runs. Here is a direct link to the Shuckers' Twitter Media Page, where you will find ten, count 'em, ten videos from the Friday twinbill. RH starter Victor Castaneda can underwhelm as he did in the nightcap: four shutout innings and handed a six-run lead, then homer - bunt single - line drive single - line drive double - home run to start the 5th. Final: Lansing (Athletics) 3, Wisconsin 2 Rattlers Late Lead Disappears Against Lansing - Lugnuts beat Rattlers 3-2 Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log Honestly, I'm trying to picture the combined frustration level of a fan in attendance in Appleton Friday night who was also simultaneously listening to the big-league Brewers game. That game summary is just dripping with what-if's and why's. Nice awaited rebound effort from RHP Israel Puello, though, sweet. Saturday marks ten days since Jackson Chourio (sore right elbow) played. While that Chourio note may bum you out, these two interviews were fun, especially Metzinger, who only learned a minute or two prior he'd be going on the air - Via WSCO's "The Show with Leo and Balky: Timber Rattlers 7th round Louisville third baseman Ben Metzinger (go to the 12:40 minute mark) - also 2021 5th round Duke infielder Ethan Murray (go to the 37:45 minute mark) Speaking of audio -- "The final Los Cascabeles Night of the season was a tough 3-2 loss for the Timber Rattlers. Chris Mehring & Kyle Lobner talk about the positives like Israel Puello, Joe Gray Jr. and Jose Acosta. Joe Ayrault chimes in with a brief history of Hit Batsmen in the Darrien Miller family and more in this edition of the Postgame Podcast." Did we link within our daily reports to the latest T-Rat talk yet, with Darrien Miller? Here you go. As of Sat. AM, about a day and a half left for those sweet jerseys via auction. Final: Carolina 4, Kannapolis (White Sox) 1 Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log At least for the moment, no game summary available for this road contest. The Voice of the Mudcats, Greg Young, Jr., hasn't traveled with the team this season, something hopefully rectified in 2023 and beyond, it's amazing he has provided us with as much as he has this season. Remember Brewers, you own this affiliate! Yes, LHP Leoni De La Cruz was already 23 years old when he signed with the Crew in 2021. Now 24, that should be taken into account. But De La Cruz got an out to strand three baserunners for starter Tyler Woessner and then went on to toss four additional scoreless. That's one of the more impressive relief performances in the system this season. This was Woessner's full-season debut. Via @Joseph Zarr in our Minor league Forum nightly thread: Uh oh, Woessner just took a hard-hit comebacker off his pitching arm/hand? It's hard to tell. The trainer came out and gave skipper Victor Estevez the 'no go' sign. MiLB TV subscribers: Go to the 01:26:25 hour/minute mark here. Ugh, but how lucky have we been to have Joseph somehow monitor so much game action live from his Pacific Northwest farm-cave. We've been privy to details we otherwise would not have been, so thanks, Joseph! 2022 first round pick Eric Brown, Jr. has been idle since Tuesday, three games missed. As is so often the case without a clear in-game exit, we are left to wonder. For all we know, Brown could be on a personal-related absence. No speculation on our part - yet. Monster game for 18-year-old LF Luis Castillo, 4-for-4 with two doubles. He factored into all three run-scoring innings, and in the unique summary-less scenario here, this is an ideal time for you to click on the game log and visit the 2nd, 6th, and 8th innings. It's four evening games for the affiliates Saturday night. Both Nashville (leading) and Carolina (trailing) see 3.5 game differences in their respective standings. Oh, and we kicked off a new "Alumni News and Notes Thread", be sure to check out the Friday nights of Ryan Aguilar and Cody Ponce! Catch you again Sunday morning, folks. Just a reminder that if the Brewers are considering Erceg that decision will be made about ten days earlier than the others, as Erceg qualifies for minor league free agency if not added.

With the minor league seasons wrapping up soon, we can begin to predict who the Brewers will be adding to their 40-man roster by November (or sooner) in order to prevent other organizations from plucking them in December's Rule 5 draft. All MLB teams need to finalize their Rule 5 protection "reserve" lists by November 20th. Via MLB.com - "Held each December, the Rule 5 Draft allows clubs without a full 40-man roster to select certain non-40-man roster players from other clubs. Clubs draft in reverse order of the standings from the previous season. Players signed at age 18 or younger need to be added to their club's 40-Man roster within five seasons or they become eligible for the Rule 5 Draft. Players who signed at age 19 or older need to be protected within four seasons." In November 2021, even though the Rule 5 draft did not take place later that winter due to the lockout, all MLB teams had to finalize rosters. The Brewers did not deem any minor league player worthy of protection and no players were added to the 40-man. The player many considered as a possibility, OF/INF Korry Howell, would later be traded (along with catcher Brett Sullivan) to San Diego in the deal that netted catcher Victor Caratini. Howell was having a productive 2022 season prior to a season-ending injury in June and is currently ranked at #10 in Pipeline's most recent and heavily reconfigured Padres Top 30. But in many ways, Caratini has filled a critical role for the Crew. The Brewers don't regret the deal. Prior to the 2020 Rule 5, RHP's Alec Bettinger and Dylan File were added to the 40-man. Both were dropped from the 40-man this year, each clearing waivers. Bettinger was since released and has announced his retirement. File remains productive and the Brewers maintain his rights for the 2023 season. File is eligible to be re-added to the 40-man as shown below. Following this list of 62 eligible players, I'll briefly provide my thoughts on who I would protect if I were in the GM seat. But we really look forward to seeing your responses in the comments. Keep in mind that although they may be big leaguers soon, players like Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell, and Joey Wiemer do not need to be added to protect them from Rule 5. Their pro baseball journeys are too short at this point. Current Nashville Sounds: LHP Clayton Andrews RHP Caleb Boushley INF Patrick Dorrian RHP Dylan File RHP Matt Hardy C Nick Kahle C Brian Navarreto RHP Cam Robinson INF Brice Turang RHP Marcus Walden Current Biloxi Shuckers: LHP Nick Bennett RHP Victor Castaneda RHP Luis Contreras INF Cam Devanney C Brent Diaz 1B/C Thomas Dillard RHP Arnaldo Hernandez RHP Robbie Hitt INF Gabe Holt RHP Justin Jarvis C Jason Lopez OF Tristen Lutz RHP Abner Uribe INF Felix Valerio RHP Zach Vennaro RHP Noah Zavolas Current Wisconsin Timber Rattlers: 2B Jose Acosta OF Micah Bello RHP Justin Bullock OF Arbert Cipion RHP Taylor Floyd SS Eduardo Garcia RHP Rafael Garcia RHP Tyler Gillies OF Joe Gray, Jr RHP Max Lazar 1B Ernesto Martinez RHP Joey Matulovich INF Ashton McGee OF Reidy Mercado LHP Karlos Morales RHP Zach Mort RHP Israel Puello OF Carlos D. Rodriguez RHP Brady Schanuel RHP Christian Tripp OF Je'Von Ward Current Carolina Mudcats: 1B Jesus Chirinos RHP Jhoan Cruz OF Eduarqui Fernandez INF Alberis Ferrer LHP Pablo Garabitos RHP Juan Geraldo LHP Jackson Gillis C Alex Hall 3B Branlyn Jaraba RHP Caden Lemons RHP Michele Vassalotti Current Maryvale Brewers: C Jhonnys Cabrera INF Daniel Castillo OF Oswal Leones RHP Mario Perez LHP Josh Shapiro My Protection List: Brice Turang (Lock) - Most likely won't need to wait until November 20th and will see action down the stretch Cam Robinson - Rare for a pure reliever to be added, but hard to dispute the amazing 2021-2022 production Abner Uribe - Two pure relievers? It's today's MLB. Season-ending injury was a knee, not the 103 MPH arm. Not quite: Victor Castaneda, Justin Jarvis, Felix Valerio, Eduardo Garcia Just to wrap up, there is a Minor League Phase of the Rule 5 draft as well: For the Minor League phase, any player not protected on a 38-man Triple-A roster from that same group can be selected. Any team with a full 38-man Triple-A roster is not allowed to make a selection, but teams can make as many picks as they want until they get to 38 players. That doesn’t mean, as it does in the Major League phase, that a player selected has to stick at that level. If a team takes a player in the Minor League phase, it costs $24,500, paid to the original team. The selecting team can then send its new player to any level in its system it chooses. Without getting too deep into the woods, the Brewers will likely set their "AAA" roster to 35 to 36, leaving room for them to make a pick or two in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft if they wish. They will create that list from the 62 names above. Those not included will be eligible to be plucked in the minor league phase of Rule 5. Final note: You see names on the list above, namely Nashville C Brian Navarreto and RHP Marcus Walden, plus Biloxi RHP Arnaldo Hernandez and C Jason Lopez, that seemingly will not qualify for minor league free agency and do not appear on our previously published list of those players. We have reason to believe that these players are on current deals that extend their relationship with Milwaukee into 2023. View full article
