Transactions: RHP Connor Sadzeck was outrighted to Nashville. As a previously outrighted player (October 2019 by Seattle), Sadzeck has the right to refuse the outright and become a free agent. We'll await word as to if he indeed formally accepted this assignment back to the Sounds. RHP Jack Cousins had his rehab assignment moved from ACL Brewers Blue to Nashville. Final: Nashville 4, Charlotte (White Sox) 2 Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Hiura's Homer Leads Sounds to Another Win - Nashville has won nine of 10 games against Charlotte in 2022 Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log For everything from Freddy Peralta to Dylan File to Jake Cousins on the mound, fine infield defense, and photos from Tim Dillard's big Bobblehead and Jersey Retirement Night, please check out the Sounds' Twitter Media feed this morning. Roster observation: catcher Alex Jackson yet to play since his activation from the IL on July 17th. With three catchers on the big league level, and four catchers at AAA - Jakson Reetz got the start here, with Mario Feliciano, Brian Navarreto and Jackson listed on the Sounds bench. Final: Biloxi 10, Montgomery (Rays) 9, ten innings Frelick Walk-off Hit Salvages 10-9 Win in Extras - Shuckers Register 10th Walk-Off Victory Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log Biloxi's own Twitter Media Feed has offense from Thomas Dillard, Noah Campbell, and of course, the Sal Frelick game-ender Yes, it was 8-0 Shuckers after five. Wild night, be sure to dig into the summary and the links above. Stat observation: With Frelick reaching base five times in this contest, his OBP in 50 games with Biloxi this summer is now .391. His OBP in 21 games to start 2022 with Wisconsin? .391. Final: Wisconsin 4, Cedar Rapids (Twins) 0 Rattlers Shut Out Cedar Rapids to Snap Streak - Jarvis pitches six scoreless with eight strikeouts in 4-0 win Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log AUDIO via the Soundcloud Rattler Radio Podcast: "The streak is over! The Timber Rattlers shut out the Cedar Rapids Kernels 4-0. The victory ended Wisconsin's ten-game losing streak. Chris Mehring & Kyle Lobner go over a few of the turning points and stats. Via WSCO's "The Show with Leo and Balky (Thursday): Wisconsin Hitting Coach Nick Stanley (go to the 11:45 minute mark) - also Voice of the Timber Rattlers Chris Mehring (go to the 39:00 minute mark) Fitting that Justin Jarvis is the subject of Kyle Lobner's Latest "T-Rat Talk". Alumni observation: Video via MLB Network's "MLB Central": Enjoy the amazing journey of former Timber Rattlers infielder / converted to RHP Jose Cuas , now thriving in the big leagues with Kansas City Final: Fayetteville (Astros) 2, Carolina 1 Late Error Proves Costly in 2-1 Loss in Fayetteville - The Carolina offense struck out a combined 17 times in the 2-1 loss in Fayetteville Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log Thank you, Greg Young, Voice of the Mudcats for this addition to the game summary you just read - NOTE: Jheremy Vargas took a pitch to his helmet in the seventh and was forced to leave the game. His helmet absorbed most of the contact and Vargas is reportedly doing well. The fateful decider - only error #7 on the season for Zack Raabe: Likely over-worrying lineup observation: Catcher Jeferson Quero was the designated hitter Tuesday but has since sat out the last three games. Final: ACL Brewers Blue 4, ACL Guardians 0 Box Score / Game Log Combined two-hitter for the three Blue hurlers. fanning 13 while walking three, nice! Final: ACL Brewers Gold 10, ACL Cubs 7 Box Score / Game Log Gold with more walks (eight) than hits (seven). Three of the seven were two-baggers. Final: DSL Texas Blue 5, DSL Brewers #1 Squad 3 Box Score / Game Log Ugly, seven errors, so be sure to see how many earned runs were allowed by Brewer pitchers during their nine innings on the mound. Final: Phillies Red 7, DSL Brewers #2 Squad 2 Box Score / Game Log Clean defense in this one, but a four-run Phillie 8th bumped a one-run Brewer deficit to five. Good place to remind everyone considering the need for this particular report to be a bit more streamlined this morning, that on a daily basis, we kick off a preview and an "as the games are being played" discussion thread on our Minor League Forum. Now please be aware that its volume of content will vary quite a bit from night-to-night, depending on the availability of our minor league gurus and contributions within from our posters, but you'll nearly always find noteworthy tidbits. Here's Friday night's thread. On Saturday, all four full-season affiliate games are in the evening, so you'll be able to sample after the mid-afternoon big-league Brewers game. The Maryvale youth play their traditional Saturday morning game against each other. Both Dominican squads will be in action as well. Hope you all have a fine start to your weekend. My weekend kicked off very well, sitting among so many others - for those of you who will also be in attendance at Fenway Saturday and/or Sunday, keep up the great work. Taking the T into Fenway Welcome to my state! (I grew up and still live 50-60 miles to the south of Boston.) You should be fine with the "T", just keep an eye if it's an insanely late Sunday nighter - it helps immensely that ESPN starts their games an hour earlier than a few years ago. I'm not going to tell you not to go the bleacher route -- but especially if the Sox continue to stumble, wait out the StubHub route and just be diligent about updating your StubHub page and clicking on sections of interest. I'm going to see the Brewers Friday night and on Tuesday scored two $190 face value (each) field box seats between the Crew's 3rd base dugout and home plate for $55 apiece. That's not the available norm as I type, but those types of deals will come up occasionally, and I got lucky. Now, Yankees - Brewers is a different animal altogether, good luck regardless. Pro Tips for Visiting Fenway Park in Boston There are likely dozens of similar sites out there. Enjoy the city and your stay! Jim

The Sounds and Shuckers combined to surrender 17 runs and commit six errors. Although the Mudcats only plated three runs of their own, they played clean defense and saw strong pitching lead to victory. The Timber Rattlers learned Mother Nature is undefeated - when she says you can play, you play, and when she says you can't, you don't. Transaction: Brewers 40-man roster RHP Justin Topa (flexor tendon surgery on right elbow last September) began a rehab assignment with Arizona Gold in Maryvale. *** Final: Louisville (Reds) 10, Nashville 6 Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Fall Short in Louisville - Nashville Outslugged by Bats as Series Evens Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log Brice Turang's pedestrian .717 OPS seems to be one of the more misleading OPS lines in the system. Going the month of June without an extra-base hit didn't help, but as you just read in the summary, he’s hitting .302 in 16 games in July with an .849 OPS and a league-high 18 runs scored. Turang is only striking out at just under a 23% clip and has walked 34 times vs. 345 at-bats (hey, easy math!). He's playing all season at age 22 and is a rock defensively (only six errors, one in this contest). There's a reason Manager Rick Sweet gushes every chance he gets: Keston Hiura 1-for-5, one K, played left field in his Sounds return. It'll partly be Lucas Erceg's call if he wishes to return to the organization in 2023. A minor league free agent this fall, the Brewers would probably have interest in bringing him back, but he's an unlikely add to the 40-man roster. *** Final: Pensacola (Marlins) 7, Biloxi 5 Errors Doom Shuckers In 7-5 Loss - Frelick Records Three Hits, Mitchell & Wiemer Both Drive in Two Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log Plenty of game details at that summary link, but the real focus here is on the outfield duo of Sal Frelick and Garrett Mitchell. Mitchell gets the available video love below, but Frelick's just been a monster as well. The pair combined for four doubles. The drought of not having home-grown position players in the big-league lineup is going to end, and it's going to do so in a big way. So much faith and confidence in VP of Amateur Scouting Tod Johnson right now. You'll find out why "double" is in quotes in the tweet below: Honestly, we tend to get hung up on wins and losses here, when a game like this reminds us of what it's all about. High-end talent from within is so critical to this organization, that's not news. *** Postponed: Beloit (Marlins) at Wisconsin, rain Rattlers Game Postponed on Saturday - Wisconsin to host Sky Carp in doubleheader on Sunday DVR Reminder for locals: Sunday’s twinbill will be broadcast on CW-14 in Northeastern Wisconsin starting at 1:00 PM. Marvel Iron Man Jersey Auction Ends Early Sunday Evening! *** Final: Carolina 3, Down East (Rangers) 1 Mendez Hits Leadoff Blast in 3-1 Carolina Victory - Hendry Mendez extended his hitting streak to 12 straight while going 2-for-3 with a home run Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log There may be a difference in OPS of .280 points, but we should start considering more strongly that RF Hendry Mendez is the Robin to Jackson Chourio's Batman, or if not quite 1B to Chourio's 1A, then how about 1C? (Chourio's on his own planet.) It was seven starts ago on June 9th when we last saw RHP Edwin Jimenez this effective, that was five innings of shutout ball. RHP Michele Vassalotti recorded just one out, but it was the key out of the game, stranding two Jimenez baserunners in the 6th. Remarkably, this is 23-year-old Venezuelan catcher Jose Sibrian's 7th season in the system. Injuries (and the lost 2020) have limited Jose to only 192 games since his 2016 debut. He's set to be one of the youngest minor league free agents on the market this fall. Perhaps the Brewers seek to bring him back. *** Final: ACL Brewers Gold 7, ACL Brewers Blue 1, seven innings as scheduled Box Score / Game Log Shortstop Ney Serrano's 2nd inning line drive single to center field was the only hit for the 13-20 Blue Man Group. Blue's only run came in the first inning on a bases loaded walk. Team Gold (17-16) was aided by eight walks and an HBP by Blue pitchers. The highlight among the Golden arms was 31-year-old rehabber Justin Topa's stint, which went HBP, GIDP, and K swinging. There's that young man again -- 18-year-old Jadher Areinamo, playing shortstop, was the only player with a multi-hit game and he walked as well. He was caught stealing for the fourth time in eight attempts this season (Last year was 5-for-9). Sunday off for the Maryvale Crews. *** Final: DSL Phillies White 8, DSL Brewers #1 Squad 4 Box Score / Game Log All ten hits for the Uno boys were singles. The three arms utilized all sport ERA's of 6.62 and above, and the team committed three errors behind those pitchers. Backup catcher Roman La Torre out of Venezuela, who only turned 17 years old in May, has appeared in 14 games this summer. This was his 2nd with multiple hits, as he posted a 3-for-4 line. He's a LH bat. Switch-hitting CF Luis Lara, just 17, still has the top offensive numbers on the team, though his gaudy .338/.383/.527 June has molded into a .264/.317/396 line in July. *** Final: DSL Twins 6, DSL Brewers #2 Squad 1 Box Score / Game Log Coming off five innings of shutout ball in his last outing, RHP Daniel Corniel was hit hard here, surrendering all six runs in his four innings. This team's breakout star, 2nd year Venezuelan corner OF/1B Yeison Perez, doubled, singled, and drove in the only run for his club. Video game line is at .321/.389/.691 in just 81 at-bats. Perez was idle from June 22nd to July 4th, He posted a ridiculous 1.392 OPS in June, and in a similar number of July at-bats, it's a still-respectable .785. Shoutout to leadoff man and recently-turned 18-year-old second baseman Demetrio Nadal as the Dominican native singled twice and stole his 12th base in 13 attempts. Guess what? The Dominican League is having its All-Star Game Sunday! We won't know the Brewers participants until we see the box score, which will be available at the usual Dominican League link we provide below. *** Well, we learned that it's the folks in Louisville, Kentucky and not Zebulon, North Carolina who will see Freddy Peralta's first rehab outing. Missed opportunity, Brewers! That game will run concurrent to the Crew's big-league affair, so surely, we'll get updates from the Bally Sports team. But another reason to get that rather inexpensive MiLB.TV subscription! It was supposed to be an Ethan Small day for the Sounds, so we'll see if it's Small who piggy-backs on Freddy's outing. As for the rest of Sunday's action, Biloxi has the evening to themselves if you wish to check out Sal, Garrett, Joey and the men in Shuckerville. Stay cool and hydrated folks, we are looking at a record 100-degree day in my southeastern Massachusetts locale today. The full-season minor league affiliates all returned to play Friday night after four days off and let's just say, the Brewers bats (and their opponent's) were very refreshed. There were 18 runs scored in Nashville's game at Louisville. The Wisconsin and Carolina home games saw 19 and 22 runs light up the scoreboard, respectively, in games with unfavorable final scores. A combined 29 young men crossed the plate in the two Arizona Rookie games, a combined 21 in the two Dominican contests. Only in Biloxi, where LHP Nick Bennett (much more on him in a bit) and two relievers combined on a two-hitter in a 5-1 victory, did any semblance of mound magic prevail. Be prepared to refer to crooked numbers, positive and not-so-positive, when you review the teams' game summaries and the linked box scores. Strap on your seat belt, roller coaster fans - it is summer, after all! Oh, and one of the Brewers best prospects exited with what appeared to be a significant injury, sigh... Transaction: Sounds RH reliever Luke Barker has not officially been placed on the AAA injured list as of yet, but the news isn't great - Barker is not the injured prospect I refer to above. Our best to Luke, it's now #HealLukeBarker. - RHP Rafael Garcia was assigned to ACL Brewers Blue for rehab assignment, 21-year old Garcia threw 49 2/3 innings in Maryvale last year (6.16 ERA). He made his 2022 debut Friday after dealing with an undisclosed injury. Garcia was placed on the High-A Timber Rattlers' injured list to begin this season in what must have been a paperwork maneuver related to roster juggling. *** Final: Nashville 12, Louisville (Reds) 6 Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Singleton Hits Two Homers as Sounds Runaway Late - Nashville cracks four homers, use big innings late to overcome early deficit at Louisville Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log Cincinnati's AAA club has been as unsuccessful as their big-league mates - now 36-54. Your first-place Sounds, however, chug along at an impressive 55-35. Too bad this is only a three-game series. Sadly, road game without cultivated video, so take our word for it when we remind you that the top five in the order went 13-for-23 with six extra-base hits and seven walks. Only Mario Feliciano, back from his MLB taxi-squad stint, went hitless, though he drew a walk. Business card: 33-year-old switch-hitting OF Abraham Almonte, professional hitter. He has a 1.004 OPS vs. RHP's, may as well be stronger vs. those you'll see more often. No Keston Hiura (yet), thought this would be his latest "first game back" at AAA. Close games, blowout wins, bailing out the starting pitcher, it's been the theme of the Nashville pitching season - the bullpen's performance has been ridiculously strong and consistent. *** Final: Biloxi 5, Pensacola (Marlins) 1 Bennett's Seven Frames Helps Shuckers Start Home Stand with Win - Biloxi Pitching Holds Wahoos’ to Two Hits, Frelick Homers in Second Straight Game Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log It wasn't an eye-popping team offensive outburst (6 H, 4 BB, 13 K), but there's something about seeing a healthy Mitchell-Frelick-Wiemer outfield to be sure. Garrett and Sal combined for three stolen bases as well. This lineup is deep, Lutz-Valerio-Devanney in the 6-7-8 spots for this one. Shouldn't avoid mentioning Joey Wiemer's K %-age is now over 34% after his sombrero here. As for southpaw Nick Bennett, I strongly encourage you to read through this thread from earlier this month. It's by Jackson Sigman, a RH reliever for the 2019 Rocky Mountain Vibes team in the Brewers' chain. He now works for Driveline, the data-driven player development gurus. That's fantastic stuff! Now, Bennett's game log shows that he has sandwiched one middling effort between two stellar ones since that came out, but Nick is trending in the right direction. The Brewers' pitching development staff has been very productive, but this shows that sometimes a player has to go outside the system for a fresh perspective. If this is the new Nick Bennett, it's good for all. *** Final: Beloit (Marlins) 10, Wisconsin 9 Late Rattler Rally Falls Short of Sky Carp Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log Nice to have this audio back! Audio via the Rattler Radio SoundCloud - "The Timber Rattlers lost 10-9 to the Beloit Sky Carp in their first home game since July 3. Chris Mehring and Kyle Lobner talk about the 9-2 deficit and the comeback by the Rattlers to make Beloit just a little nervous. Manager Joe Ayrault joins the podcast with some clubhouse comments, too." Eight in the lineup with base knocks, five with multiple, including three for Ashton McGee. The three team errors were unfortunate, and RH starter Israel Puello's very impressive run of four starts to begin his High-A career hit a road bump. If you remember the "Beloit Snappers", then like me, this will make you laugh: *** Final: Down East (Rangers) 12, Carolina 10 Wood Ducks Outlast Mudcats 12-10 in Series Opener - Jackson Chourio went 3-for-6 with three doubles, three runs and two RBI in the Carolina loss Pre-Game Media Notes / Box Score / Game Log I've had many people send me messages about when the Chourio call-up will happen - I guarantee you the Wisconsin ticket office staff would like to know as well -- The start by RHP Stiven Cruz was similar in nature to that of Israel Puello in Appleton, heralded young arm who had a clunker coming out of the break. The darn box score and game log sent us to the MiLB.TV archive once again. Why would prized SS prospect Eduardo Garcia have to be lifted for a pinch-runner after going from first to third on a base hit in the 9th? For MiLB.TV subscribers: Go to the 03:45:45 hour/minute mark. The camera work captured it all very clearly. Looks like a right hamstring issue, though that's the unofficial word - because as we know, we won't get an official word! Definitely did not look promising for a quick return, though... *** Final: ACL Reds 11, ACL Brewers Blue 7 Box Score / Game Log Rafael Garcia, who you read about in the Transaction note to kick things off today, did not retire any of the four batters he faced in his start (three walks). Baby steps, Rafael, welcome back. My, oh my, Jace Avina, are you kidding? In case you missed the written report we linked to earlier this week, here it is in video form: Avina clubbed home runs #7 and #8 in this game, in just 90 at-bats! No bandboxes in Arizona, either! Avina added a single and a walk and now sports a .300/.427/.656 line. Now we should mention that 38 of his 63 outs have come via strikeout, a 42.2% K rate. Unlike his long balls, that won't "fly". What a fascinating rookie-level prospect! *** Final: ACL Brewers Gold 8, ACL Athletics 3 Box Score / Game Log Six Golden Boys with multiple hits, including 18-year-old infielder (3rd base here) Jadher Areinamo, who is flashing a .902 OPS. Unlike their counterparts in several outposts across the chain, the club here combined their efforts at the plate with solid defense and mound work. The two Maryvale clubs square off for the umpteenth time on Saturday morning. *** Final: DSL Reds 12, DSL Brewers #1 Squad 2 Box Score / Game Log Final: Nationals 4, DSL Brewers #2 Squad 3 Box Score / Game Log In that 2nd game, the Crew lost on a walk-off three-run triple after loading the bases on three non-base hits. Further specific details on both games are available via @damuelle in our Minor League Forum, follow this link to see the two posts. *** On Saturday, all the full-season clubs play early evening games. So that being said, we leave you with one of the more catchy pop hits of America' bicentennial year, though the artists came from across the pond. The Crew's minor league system enjoys a respite as the Maryvale games don't resume until Thursday, while the four-full season clubs return to action on Friday. In the sunny Dominican Republic, however, rookie complex league games will be played each day this week. Final: DSL Tigers #1 Squad 5, Brewers #1 Squad 3 Box Score / Game Log Team Uno falls to 11-18 with this loss, falling despite winning the hit battle, nine-to-three, though all nine hits were singles. Brewers #1 led 3-1 after six innings, but the Tigers got a clutch two-out three-run double in the 7th to take the lead. A home run in the 9th provided the Detroit kids with the insurance run. As @damuelle posted on our Minor League Forum, his comments in this report are italicized - 16-year old RHP Manuel Rodriguez has entered the radar: 4 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 1 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks in today's game. His season ERA is now 3.44 and WHIP is 0.87, although the 13 strikeouts (in 18 1/3 innings) and .212 BABIP should temper our enthusiasm for now. Rodriguez is a native of Mexico and turns 17 on August 8th. 18-year old 1B Arnys Rodriguez (.796 season OPS) reached base three times (single, walk, HBP) and also stole three bases. The switch hitter is the Brewers' 4th-oldest position player in the Brewers' chain at the DSL level, so perhaps he could be looking at a move stateside soon. Arnys Rodriguez turns 19 August 12th. 4th-oldest, crazy. Jhonny Severino, the 17-year-old baby bonus signing last January, had two hits but also two errors at shortstop, where he has struggled often. Now with nine errors in 17 games at short, and five errors in six games at third base. Plenty of time to get settled in that regard. *** Final: DSL Phillies White 9, Brewers #2 Squad 7 Box Score / Game Log Phillies committed seven (!) errors but their pitchers limited the damage to two unearned runs. Brewers #2 fielders added three errors of their own (one unearned run). Big 2022 signing 17-year old 3B Johan Barrios had a triple, double and three RBIs, but departed in the 7th inning of a then 5-4 contest. Hopefully that was a planned exit / sharing of duties. There were four HBP's in this game, two on each side. Phillies attempted nine stolen bases, successful on seven. Add up all that activity and game time was 4:01, as we have not seen evidence of a pitch clock on the island. 18-year-old Venezuelan native first baseman Yeison Perez was on base twice (single, HBP), and his OPS sits at a cool 1.143 through 67 at-bats, including seven round-trippers prior to Monday's game. Team Dos drops to a still respectable 17-14. *** We will post another report Wednesday AM, but with just one game, as the two Dominican clubs face each other in another morning affair in the Caribbean weather. It's not just the big-league Brewers who are stumbling towards the break associated with the mid-summer classic. After Sunday's action, all four full-season affiliates will be off until Friday the 22nd. The Arizona Complex League is now off until Thursday the 21st. Only the Dominican Summer League games maintain a normal schedule this week, with games set for this Monday. Not only that, but you'll notice there's been no buzz around any league All-Star games. Apparently, the powers around MiLB saw more benefit on having a full player time-off reset - so for instance, no Southern, Midwest or Carolina League All-Star Games this year. It would have been tough to coordinate with so many of the best prospects already in action for the Futures Game this weekend. Speaking of the Futures Game, MLB.com broke down how each team's representatives fared, so here's your most convenient click to learn about OF's Jackson Chourio and Joey Wiemer and LHP Antoine Kelly. Transactions: OF Tyrone Taylor assigned to Nashville this weekend for his concussion rehab stint. (Taylor was 0-for-4, one K on Saturday.) OF Matt Lipka was acquired from the Washington Nationals for cash considerations. This is the second consecutive season the Brewers have done this, as cash was sent to the Diamondbacks in late June 2021 for Lipka's services. Lipka then enjoyed a nice run in Nashville last summer. Thus far in 2022, the 30-year-old Lipka had struggled at AAA Rochester, with a .577 OPS through 104 at-bats. Prior to this deal, the Brewers' last trade with the Nationals was for a AAA depth southpaw in July of last summer. Only 12 months ago, so you remember who, right? Answer is at the link Finally on the transaction front, Milwaukee is making use of the final vestiges of their January 2022 international signing bonus pool, signing a RHP and CF, both 17-years-old, detailed here. It is not believed either signing involved significant dollars at this point in the process. *** Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Memphis (Cardinals) 10, Nashville 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Break First Horizon Park Attendance Record - A record 12,409 fans came out for Star Wars Night on Saturday You know the game didn't go well when everything in the game summary headline is about the Nashville fan base (which kudos to them, as the following there is excellent). But there are tidbits within the report (Pablo Reyes, Lucas Erceg), so don't be scared off of clicking by the final score. For fans of the legendary Olympic "Miracle on Ice", the starting pitchers were Herb and Brooks. Hey, remember when RHP Aaron Brooks was a member of Milwaukee's 40-man roster? Brooks was traded to Oakland for cash after his August 2018 DFA, never appearing at the big-league level for the Crew, and has carved out quite the journeyman career, including two recent seasons in Korea. Nashville had three doubles among its six hits (Reyes, Brice Turang, Weston Wilson), but didn't draw a single walk. RHP Luis Perdomo allowed two hits and a run in his latest inning of injury rehab work. Those Cardinals teams -- having guys ejected in the 8th inning, up 10-0. You do you, Redbirds. Hey, something for the massive crowd to cheer on this night. *** Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes via the Shuckers' Virtual Press Box Final: Tennessee (Cubs) 4, Biloxi 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please review: Late Rally Falls a Run Short in Shuckers' Defeat - Mitchell Drives in Two More for Biloxi We indicated yesterday we'd limit commentary and just let this latest Garrett Mitchell run ride, so as not to jinx it. It's working! Remember when Khris Davis would hit exactly .248 every year during his power binge years with Oakland? Check out RHP Victor Castaneda's year-to-year WHIP, in fact compare his batting average against, WHIP, ground ball ratio and more between this season and last. Castaneda only walked one here - that's been an issue prior - but given his stuff, the Brewers surely were hoping for better development at this point from the soon-to-be 24-year-old native of Mexico. Castaneda's line here was aided by the stranding of two inherited runners by RHP Harold Chirino with just one out in the 6th. Cam Devanney, playing third base in this one, walked (OPS now .828), but he's been so valuable all season and got some press up north this morning - *** Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes via their all-encompassing Virtual Press Box Final: West Michigan (Tigers) 3, Wisconsin 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers' site, game details, please review: Rattlers Fall 3-1 to Whitecaps - Warren’s homer is Wisconsin’s only run Darn, all three opponent base hits came in the fateful first inning. Justin Jarvis got through seven innings on 101 pitches; he has made big strides in 2022 after a rough April and should be a mainstay of the Biloxi rotation next season, when he'll be just 23 years old. Keep in mind this was a road game, but regardless, the local media shines the light on an excellent catch by Arbert Cipion in right field, and we watch Tristan Peters have a potential "fair pole" home run snatched away within this highlight package: A bit of a homecoming for Zavier Warren in this series, so his home run must have been rewarding, even in the loss. He was quoted in this article earlier in the week, expressing his appreciation: LMCU Ballpark plays Central Michigan University's fight song at Whitecaps game *** Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 10, Delmarva (Orioles) 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats' site, details, please review: Los Pescados Rally for Six in the Eighth in 10-2 Victory - Jeferson Quero went 2-for-3 with a go-ahead single in the second and a two-run double in the eighth OK, finally a win to celebrate and an emphatic one at that! "Chourio?! We don't need no stinkin' Chourio!" We'll jump all the way to the six-run 8th as Hendry Mendez cracked an RBI ground-rule double. From earlier this week, Baseball America's Josh Norris (Jackson Chourio's biggest fan), now has his sights set on Mendez: This is a joyous double-highlight tweet - both Jeferson Quero (DH'ing here) and Eduardo Garcia are featured. Folks, if you know Carolina's ballpark and the high wall in center, you recognize that Garcia's blast is an absolute bomb - young man has strength for days. The mound work here was excellent, and if Dominican-born RHP Alexander Cornielle can reign in the walks as he did in this one (zero), the sky's the limit for him. Cornielle doesn't turn 21 until next month. Thanks, Mudcats, for this game, we needed it, and yes, the Los Pescados jerseys are sweet! *** Final: ACL Brewers Blue 9, ACL Brewers Gold 1, seven innings as scheduled Box Score / Game Log Blue Man Group moves to 12-18 with the win, while the Golden Youngies fall back to .500 at 15-15. Congrats to 18-year-old second baseman Jonatan Guzman on his first pro home run. The Dominican native is debuting this summer in Maryvale. Guzman was part of the prized 2021 Chourio-Mendez, etc. international class but unlike Jackson, Hendry and others, did not play in 2021. I often check these HR "first's" in the game log to see if any were of the inside-the-park variety. Hey, at Maryvale, you never know. This one was pulled to left over the fence off of RHP Kevin Briceno, who we had recently highlighted after his own promotion from the Dominican Complex League (it'll always be the DSL to us). Briceno was charged with four runs against in 3.1 innings in his first U.S. appearance, though he did not walk a batter, which is par for the course for him. Switch-hitting 19-year-old Curacao native Jamal Zalm connected on his first stateside home run and 2nd pro blast (also off Briceno). It seems Zalm has settled into a corner outfield role as of late, rather than his utility infield beginnings. As you'll see in the box score, three others homered in this one. Right fielder Eduarqui Fernandez was ejected arguing a called third strike with his team up 7-1 in the 5th inning - who says there's no passion in these inter-organizational games? 6'8" LHP Angel Perdomo retired all three he faced in his latest rehab appearance, fanning one. With Luis Perdomo rehabbing at Nashville, Angel Perdomo here, and 20-year-old RHP Michael Perdomo also pitching in this game. I'm all Perdomo'd out. As noted above, the Maryvale kids are now idle until Thursday. *** Final: DSL Angels 6, DSL Brewers #1 Squad 5 Box Score / Game Log Crew #1 scored three in the 7th to inch to within one and had men on 1st and 2nd with one out when the rally fizzled after an Angels pitching change. The team dropped to 11-17 on the season. Hey, another first career home run to acknowledge, as 18-year-old RF Duncan Garcia pulled a drive to left field leading off that 7th inning. Garcia had two of the four hits on the day for his club. *** Final: DSL Tigers #2 Squad 8, DSL Brewers #2 Squad 6 Box Score / Game Log Crew #2 (17-13) squandered a 6-4 9th inning lead here. (No, Josh Hader was not getting side work in...) In the fateful inning, RHP Waldin Rodriguez entered the game, hit a batter, was not ejected, but immediately pulled (injured)? RHP Stanley Encarnacion entered and took the loss. Getting work in? Brewers utilized eight pitchers, but it wasn't a bullpen game, as 18-year-old starting RHP Daniel Corniel, a Venezuelan native, tossed five scoreless, and allowed only two baserunners (double, single), in what was clearly the best outing of his rookie season. Brewers were 7-of-8 in stolen base attempts. We'll send you for a box score review again for the two Crew #2 home runs. Plenty of pitching changes, but three hours, 50 minutes? Not the first time we've noticed this on the island, where pitch clocks are likely not in vogue yet. Back to action Monday for both island clubs. *** The four full-season clubs have early afternoon start times Sunday, and the Shuckers and Timber Rattlers will be extra-anxious to head home after two full weeks on the road. Enjoy your summer Sunday, everyone! Back to action Monday for both island clubs. *** The four full-season clubs have early afternoon start times Sunday, and the Shuckers and Timber Rattlers will be extra-anxious to head home after two full weeks on the road. The Sounds walk off the rival Redbirds. The Shuckers earn a much-needed victory. Is that enough to clear the images of Josh Hader's very unfortunate Friday night in San Francisco from your memory? For most folks reading, obviously no. But hopefully you find enough positives within our report to find a distracting respite. Transactions: Carolina third baseman Alberis Ferrer rejoins the Mudcats after a brief formal rehab stint in Arizona. He last played with Carolina teammates on June 1st. RHP Kevin Briceno was promoted stateside from the Dominican League to ACL Brewers Gold. Back on June 30th, we were treated to these images to match up with the stellar island numbers the 19-year-old 2nd-year-pro had posted at that time, and Briceno has thrown 9.5 scoreless frames since this tweet: Finally, although it's not a formal transaction, Timber Rattler Tyler Black had to exit last Sunday's game in South Bend and has not seen action since. Say what one will about RHP Trevor Kelley's big-league efforts, but he has been stellar in 17 appearances with Nashville. Veteran starter Marcus Walden was brought in from indy ball purgatory June 22nd to soak up starter innings as he did here. Completing our focus on the mound, the top of the 10th included this web gem from Hobie Harris. Let's see - Kelley, Strzelecki, Barker, Sadzeck - Harris actually is very-deserving of his own chance to make a big-league visit with the Crew this season. We'll kick off today's report with audio links you can take in while perusing the details below. MLB Pipeline's Sam Dykstra joined Steve "Sparky" Fifer of WSSP for a fun chat about the Brewers' system - the Apple Podcasts link is here, or you can pull it up via other means at this link. Either way, go to the 17:15 minute mark. For many reading this now, one of your likely favorite Twitter follows is Daron at "Cream City Prospects", we've linked to him often, and with good reason. Granted, this interview is a couple of weeks old, but everything within is still highly relevant, and what's especially interesting is how Daron discusses the nature and inherent joys of following so deeply a minor league farm system, the amount of time involved, and more. Go to the 16:00 minute mark: Transactions: Ray's injury is undisclosed, within this past week, he had been described as day-to-day. In his seventh season in the system (last under team control unless added back to the 40-man roster), Ray's remarkably lackluster Brewers career appears fading in much the pattern of prior seasons. Of course, it's also a season in which the big-league club's center field issues have been pronounced. Ray's placement on the IL is retroactive to July 7th. Ferrer (MiLB Player Page) is already in his 5th pro season (again, the 2020 time warp), and the 21-year-old has all of 27-games in full-season ball, all with Carolina earlier this season, playing primarily at third base. He's been sidelined since June 9th. You'll find details on Sunitsch within this post at our season-long minor league transaction thread. *** Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 6, Columbus (Guardians) 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Belt Four Homers, Crush Clippers - Nashville Wins Eighth Consecutive Game Yesterday's report led me to bring out the "Lather - Rinse - Repeat" mantra. Seems today we'll just roll with "clicking on all cylinders". You know, it's now easier to actually nit-pick things in the box score, since all nine Sounds had a base hit (three with two), five drew walks, and on the mound, the combined effort of the four hurlers was pretty much elite. So, let's see - Pablo Reyes committed an error at short while Brice Turang did his quite-often Saturday night thing of playing center field. Patrick Dorrian was caught stealing. Brian Navarreto was assigned a passed ball. Luis Contreras threw a wild pitch. The Sounds were 2-for-14 with RISP and stranded 11 when they weren't clubbing home runs. Re-read the glorious game summary linked above. We tend to focus on the positive in a major way here. The Sounds are making it so easy to do that, so the prior paragraph simply presented a challenge. Remarkable run of success, men. *** Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes via the Shuckers' Virtual Press Box Suspended, top of the 10th: Biloxi 6, Montgomery (Rays) 4 Gameday Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please review: Shuckers And Biscuits Suspended In the 10th - Biloxi Holds 6-4 When Game Is Resumed on Sunday Normally we don't wish to overload on video, but with all the full-season clubs on the road, it's been a bit light in this regard this week, so we'll pepper you with highlights the Shuckers' crew culled from the Biscuits' TV feed. Can we talk about that Wiemer throw? How he had to contort his body yet still got the job done? My goodness. Yes, we know about the recent month-log malaise at the plate. But it's still so easy to picture a Hunter Renfroe-esque stint in Milwaukee down the road for Wiemer, with all three years of pre-arbitration salaries kicking off six-to-seven years of control. Joey doubled in this game, but also fanned three times and grounded into a double play in his other at-bats. My eyes must be fooling me - I don't recognize the 0-for-5, three K's next to the name "Reetz". Solid three innings for RHP Noah Zavolas, in line for the win in relief, after his last outing in which he had to take one for the team in a disastrous start. *** Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes via their all-encompassing Virtual Press Box Final: Wisconsin 8, South Bend (Cubs) 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers' site, game details, please review: Big Second Inning Pushes Wisconsin Past South Bend - Mort works five scoreless innings out of the bullpen as Rattlers move back into first place Big-time mound relief effort from RHP Zach Mort, the 25-year-old former Cub farmhand (8th round, 2018), and we don't want to overlook a nice game for RF Arbert Cipion, including the clutch double you just read about in Chris' summary. But I can't get past (again) the dynamic Canadian duo of Tyler Black and Tristan Peters, Black walked thrice and stole a base, Peters added two sacrifice flies to his home run and single. Go back to the box score and compare their batting averages and OPS. Why it's almost "Double Vision", which of course was a huge 80's hit for Foreigner. Wait - Canada, Foreigner, it's all coming together! By the way, The Athletic's Jim Bowden wrote that Tyler Black fetches rental 1B/DH Josh Bell straight up. Do you do it? Feel free to add a comment. It's been quite a while since our last Wes Clarke sighting, last played June 26th. The 1B/C has posted a .739 OPS in 2022. *** Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Kannapolis (White Sox) 8, Carolina 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats' site, details, please review: Chourio Hits 12th Homer in 8-5 Loss - Carolina outhit Kannapolis 13-5, but ended up losing for the fourth straight game It's the summer of Chourio. I can't even tell you how many quote tweets filled my timeline with this Chourio home run. I think it was because Brewer fans were so disgusted with Saturday's ugly loss to the Pirates that when this popped up shortly after, it was cathartic. Chourio also singled (caught stealing for the only the 2nd time in 11 attempts). Hey, we can tell you that Hendry Mendez had three hits, catcher Jose Sibrian and second baseman Zack Raabe had two knocks apiece, but c'mon, it's all Chourio, all the time. I mean, look at that 18-year-old smile: Actually, there is other news - shortstop Eduardo Garcia was hit by a pitch in the 9th inning and had to exit the game. Garcia turns 20 years old today (Sunday), hoping he's not suffering on his birthday. *** Final: ACL Brewers Blue 17, ACL Brewers Gold 2, seven innings as scheduled Box Score / Game Log I know what you're thinking, especially with how young these kids are in Maryvale, but no, game was not halted due to mercy rule. However, everyone did receive a participation trophy postgame. It was the 9-16 Blue squad over the 13-12 Gold club. The two teams combined (in seven innings) to commit four errors, walk eleven batters, throw two wild pitches, balk four times, and catch a partridge in a pear tree. The first six outings of 2022 for 20-year-old Columbian RHP Fray Morelo were very successful, but Morelo's prior game (and certainly this one) were anything but. Much of the damage fell on his unfortunate linescore. Yet it does seem when these two clubs meet, the overall coaching grades would probably fall at best in that C+ range. Oh yes, the rehabbers - Garrett Mitchell played CF, 0-for-3, two walks, stole a base. Mitchell grounded out 3-1, reached on a groundout fielding error to second base, and grounded to first when he wasn't walking (both walks in the 4th inning). Alex Jackson was behind the plate, he doubled on a fly to center in the first, then walked in the third inning. Jackson would catch the bottom of that frame before exiting. For the defeated Gold club, Alberis Ferrer (see Transactions note above) was the designated hitter, 0-for-3, two strikeouts. Did we mention that 19-year-old Venezuelan second baseman Alexander Perez hit a three-run home run in the 3rd, and a grand slam the next inning? Because he did, both off Morelo. This was Perez' 20th game in his 2nd pro season, and he lifted his 2022 OPS by 117 points (to .784). *** Final: DSL Tigers #2 Squad 10, DSL Brewers #2 Squad 0 Box Score / Game Log Try to find a positive. I dare you. *** Postponed: DSL Texas Blue at DSL Brewers #1 Squad Second day in a row. Methinks there may be a Covid-related issue here with the #1 club, but that is without any confirmation at all, obviously. *** I would like to thank the DSL clubs for reducing my typing here as I wrap up, because the beach awaits, and the Mrs. is getting antsy. It's all traditional Sunday day games today, and hopefully the Shuckers can successfully complete their suspended game. The rookie clubs are idle as is the norm. My buddy @damuelle will take care of you on Monday AM. How far-ranging is Brewers minor league fandom? If you've ever read our respective bylines at the base of these reports, you'll know I'm in Massachusetts (hence the Mass Haas / Moose Haas play on words), while Joseph is in the Pacific Northwest and Daniel is in sub-Saharan Africa, believe it or not. So yeah, that's why none of us were at BrewerFanatic's Am-Fam bash Saturday. Plane tickets lost in the mail ? Including the parent club, it was a 7-1 W-L record for the organization on Friday, which is a very pleasant way to start another summer weekend. We'll fill you in on Game Two of Garrett Mitchell's Arizona League rehab stint, while providing eyebrow-raising numbers on both Jakson Reetz and Joey Wiemer (as we search for the emoji with eyebrows moving in different directions ? ah, there it is). Plenty of insights to come, so let's kill the intro and move on, here we go! Transactions: None *** Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 6, Columbus (Guardians) 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Almonte Powers Sounds Past Clippers - Nashville Win Streak Reaches Seven with Fourth Straight in Columbus Lather. Rinse. Repeat. If the Sounds aren't on autopilot (In the best of ways), then it's pretty close. Power (Abraham Almonte HR #11, Jon Singleton HR #12), accompanied by speed (Pablo Reyes SB #10), joined by clean defense, and that's just on the position player side of things. Mix in another strong start (hello, wily Josh Lindblom) and stellar relief work, which is a given with this squad, and the proof is in the very tasty pudding. For someone who comments almost weekly on his pre-game interview show with Voice of the Sounds Jeff Hem about his lean roster, we currently count 17 (!) apparently healthy and active pitchers on Rick Sweet's squad. Almost surely at least one of the 40-man roster relievers (Trevor Kelley, Peter Strzelecki, Luke Barker) will accompany the Brewers on their upcoming road trip to Minnesota and San Francisco as a taxi squad member. But yeah Rick, on the mound, you're in good shape. Reyes, playing left field, walked three times here. Catcher Mario Feliciano played for the first time since July 2nd, 0-for-3 with a walk, but the fact that he was behind the plate pretty much indicates no concerning issue. Mini-trivia: How many catchers are currently on the 40-man roster? Four? Nope, it's five - Narvaez, Caratini, Severino, Feliciano, and don't forget Alex Jackson on the MLB IL. Jackson has a left middle finger sprain that has lingered for a full month now. Since we don't have video for this one, catch up down the foul line with starter Dylan File, and don't forget the most recent batch of Nashville pre-game audio. (We've asked if Biloxi's pre-games could be shared similarly, but it doesn't appear that's in the works for 2022 - next year we hope!) *** Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes via the Shuckers' Virtual Press Box Final: Biloxi 10, Montgomery (Rays) 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please review: Biloxi Blasts Their Way To 10-4 Win Over Montgomery - Reetz Launches League-Leading 21st and 22nd Homers You just read the details, now watch multiple highlights, culled together by one of the two Biloxi sports outlets we often get reports from: Oh Jakson Reetz, your age 26 season continues to amaze. Reetz' previous career home run high was 13 at High-A in 2019. I do wish the MiLB Player Page game log included a running account of OPS by date, as it does for OBP and SLG, it would make my point here clearer -- Reetz has been remarkably consistent even on a day-by-day basis. But here we go on a broader and yet still gorgeous scale: April OPS: 1.041 May OPS: 1.066 June OPS: 1.017 July OPS: 1.156 vs. LHP: 1.176 vs. RHP: 1.015 Day night, home, away, it doesn't matter. Do the Brewers want to add Reetz to their 40-man roster before he exits in minor league free agency this fall, knowing they'd have three optionable years? Did he sign one of those two-year minor league deals last December? Is he playing his way into being an important part of an upcoming deadline deal? Whatever the case, thank you Jakson. Felix Valerio has been caught stealing seven times, but he's also been successful on 21 attempts. So, on the cusp of productive, but seven is seven... Wouldn't have thought LHP Brandon Knarr was at 91 pitches with that pretty line, but that explains the pull after five frames. As you just watched, Thomas Dillard is the most barrel-chested of all the classic barrel-chested Brewers players, majors or minors, in team history. Have we ever seen a switch-hitter with this physical profile? To top off being eminently fun to watch, Dillard has been increasingly productive. You rock it, Thomas, upper-body, thighs, etc. We should add he's avoided the injured list his entire career. It pains me to type this, but Joey Wiemer is broken, 3-for-42, all singles, with 17 K's and three walks. Would love to know the true status of the hand and/or thumb, everything has cratered at the plate since that missed week. *** Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes via their all-encompassing Virtual Press Box Final: Wisconsin 11, South Bend (Cubs) 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers' site, game details, please review: Wisconsin Bounces Back with 11-3 Win at South Bend - Smith strikes out Nine and Peters drives in three for Rattlers Now that's how you quickly recover from a walk-off grand slam loss! So much goodness here - the Canadian duo of Tyler Black and Tristan Peters were on base six times combined, though in very different ways, as the box score attests. Double-digit steal totals now for Joe Gray (13-for-13!), Black (12-for-18), and Peters (13-for-19). All successful on this night. LHP Russell Smith's last 19.2 IP - one walk, 25 strikeouts. Yee-hah! I realize his use has been in primarily lower-leverage spots, but RH reliever Tyler Gillies has tossed five shutout innings over his last three outings, and the F* Cancer comeback continues, yes, Tyler, keep pushing. *** Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Kannapolis (White Sox) 5, Carolina 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats' site, details, please review: Carolina Totals Eight Hits in 5-0 Loss in Kannapolis - The Mudcats lost their third straight while suffering their league high eighth shutout loss When the Mudcats bats are quiet, they are really quiet. So sure, eight hits isn't awful, but they were all singles, the team was 0-for-7 with RISP, and stranded 11 overall. How good is Jackson Chourio? When you single and walk on a 1-for-3 night, and your OPS drops a point to .962, well, you've been solid. We'll give a shoutout to LH reliever Jakob Brustoski, who stranded two runners for RHP Fernando Olguin, who pitched well himself. That Cannonballers logo is glorious by the way. *** Up above, you watched Dylan File discussing the Arizona heat. Dry heat or not - it was 110 degrees at first pitch for both games in the desert Friday. Both games went nine innings! Final: ACL Brewers Gold 5, ACL Reds 3 Box Score / Game Log Twelve organizations field only one team in Arizona. Only the Giants and Diamondbacks, like the Brewers, field two. There is something to be said about having to spread the talent over two squads, so kudos to the Crew kids whenever they knock off one of these solo teams. The Golden Boys moved to 13-11 with this one, the first-place tied (w/Rangers) Reds falling to 17-7. 18-year-old middle infielder Jadher Areinamo (DH'ing here) was overmatched in a brief seven-game emergency stint in Wisconsin earlier this spring, but the talent he's shown in Arizona provides a hint as to why the organization trusted him with filling in for a bit. Two doubles and a single here, hitting .337 in Arizona now. Areinamo was part of the higher-profile group within the January 2021 international signing class that included Jackson Chourio (you've heard of him), Gregory Barrios (nice game here), Hendry Mendez, Luis Castillo and Daniel Guilarte, all performing well to very well in 2022. That signing class could prove to be looked back on very fondly down the road, we'll see. Free Ryan Middendorf. Like seriously, place the recent indy signing in the Biloxi bullpen already. Or Milwaukee, even... *** Final: ACL Brewers Blue 9, ACL Cubs 3 Box Score / Game Log Do they "fly the L" when the Cubs lose at their training complex? Because that would be awesome. Nice win for the 8-16 Blue Man Group. Garrett Mitchell was 0-for-4 with a walk and three K's, leading off as the designated hitter. He grounded out to second base in the lone plate appearance where the ball was in play. Career outing for 2nd-year RHP Yujanyer Herrera, who struggled when placed in Maryvale to begin his career in 2021. That'd be an interesting question for Tom Flanagan and the minor league staffs - a real analysis of what goes into the island vs. stateside placements, for instance would Herrera, a Venezuelan native, have benefited with a Dominican Summer League start to his career. For all the talk of successful Latin signings as of late, LH-swinging corner outfielder Luis Medina, who was MLB Pipeline's 13th overall ranked player for the July 2019 signing period, has not been on the good side of the fence. The $1.3 million signing added a low-pressure late home run to salvage a 1-for-5 evening. Medina now sits at a .560 OPS through his first 199 pro at-bats. Five-for-five in stolen base efforts here, including three by CF Reidy Mercado. The two Maryvale teams face each other Saturday morning. pre-game ritual includes cartoons on TV for the youngsters. *** Final: DSL Brewers #2 Squad 6, DSL Mets #1 Squad 2 Box Score / Game Log Both teams now 13-11 in a completely inconsequential factoid. 19-year-old rookie Dominican RHP Felipe De Los Santos allowed nothing but three singles in his five innings, striking out seven. Fellow countryman RHP Darling Solano, 18, did not allow an earned run in four-innings of piggy-back action, walking one and fanning seven. That's how you draw up a tandem for the day, folks, 18-year-old infielder Erick Reyes, in his 2nd season, pulled a line shot to left for his first professional home run. Doesn't matter who you are, that must have been a special moment for the Dominican native, who played third base Friday. 2022 has been a struggle for 2nd-year right fielder Jose Gonzalez compared to his 2021 figures, but he reached three times here and stole a base, thus Jose nets a deserved mention. *** Postponed: DSL Brewers #1 Squad at DSL Tigers #2 Squad, Rain It was 85 and sunny for the other contest. The island is larger than we think. Oh, those pop-up showers. Or, somebody left the sprinklers on the night before... Both DSL clubs are in action Saturday morning. *** The big-league Brewers have conveniently scheduled their Saturday late-afternoon game to allow everyone reading this to immediately turn to the men on the farm after the final pitch. For a second consecutive day, large crowds in Nashville, Appleton and Zebulon were treated to exciting victories. For a second consecutive day in Biloxi, not so much. Don't worry, Shuckers fans, we're calling it now, big win coming Sunday. We've got the details on all of Saturday's action, including full recaps on the four rookie complex league games, so let's kick off the festivities this morning. Transactions: RHP Trevor Kelley optioned to Nashville. With the Brewers about to head back to Milwaukee, it's likely Kelley will actually return to the Sounds this time, rather than begin another taxi squad stint. We'll see. Catcher Brent Diaz was assigned to Nashville from Biloxi. This isn't the 26-year-old's first visit to AAA, as Diaz began the 2021 season with Nashville, but saw action in only two games before heading to Biloxi for the first time. In 31 AA games with the Shuckers this season, Diaz has a fine .262/.350/.495 line with six home runs. *** Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 10, Indianapolis (Pirates) 8 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Singleton's Blast Lifts Sounds Past Indians - Sounds erase early five-run deficit, go-ahead with Singleton’s two-run homer in 8th It's more than just the outstanding 46-30 record. This Nashville team is consistently entertaining and simply put, fun to follow. Sounds management (as is Brewers brass) must be gleeful over the re-establishment of this relationship. Perhaps the best gift given to Manager Rick Sweet this season was the mid-May bump of 5'9" 30-year-old LHP Andy Otero from Biloxi. Otero's effective long relief stints have saved Sweet's bullpen load on basically each of his ten appearances thus far. In Saturday's case, it led to a win, as you just read in the summary. Following the Sounds-related Twitter feeds Saturday was like following an orchestral crescendo, fitting for the holiday. Allow eight second inning runs? No problem, let's tend to business at hand. Kudos, Otero, Zack Brown and Peter Strzelecki. What a bullpen masterpiece. Nashville rests Abraham Almonte (being careful with his status), Mark Mathias and Corey Ray yet recovers for the win. Keep this in mind as we visit Biloxi's roster shortly. One potentially important note to follow - the above-mentioned Brent Diaz pinch-hit for Mario Feliciano in the bottom of the 4th, still a close game at the time, Sounds down 8-7. Voice of the Sounds Jeff Hem had no immediate info as I reviewed the MiLB.TV archive, though he may have passed along information later in the broadcast. Newcomer Patrick Dorrian -- Behold the flip - *** Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes via the Shuckers' Virtual Press Box Final: Mississippi (Braves) 18, Biloxi 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please review: Early Runs Lead To M-Braves Blitz of Biloxi - Devanney Hits 10th Homer of Season for Shuckers Plain and simple, RHP Noah Zavolas took one for the team's sake here. No need to detail the carnage, the links are above. The Harvard product will need to work his way past this one. Infield defensive specialist Yeison Coca started in center field, just the third outfield appearance of his career, all this season with Biloxi. Why? Well... With Brent Diaz gone, the Shuckers bench to begin the game consisted of young OF Terrence Doston and backup catcher Jason Lopez as the nationwide hiring dilemma extends to Biloxi. Doston would come in for Joey Wiemer, but Voice of the Shuckers Garrett Greene put any injury concerns about that to bed. Speaking of bed, Joey's trying to wake up his bat - love the playful attitude, it'll happen, Joey. There was a bright spot as Cam reached double-digits in home runs for the first time -- *** Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes via their all-encompassing Virtual Press Box Final: Wisconsin 7, Cedar Rapids (Twins) 6 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers' site, game details, please review: Timber Rattlers Take a Thriller from Kernels - Wisconsin record eighth walkoff win of the season with a 7-6 victory in eleven innings The T-Rats are 7-1 to begin the second half! Gotta be riding in first place, right? Not so fast, say the 8-0 South Bend Cubs. Really? Guess where Wisconsin travels to Monday! No home runs or triples for either side, but this contest pretty much had everything else, as Chris Mehring's write-up which included plenty of words (good ones!), video clips, and full-game video highlights details for you. If that doesn't entice you to click above on a game summary, nothing ever will... Sure, one double was a gift, but 2021 33rd overall pick Tyler Black is the real deal. This was start #13 in CF by the way, one error and one assist in those games. Hopefully this will be a huge confidence builder for 6'8" LHP Russell Smith, what a performance. Taken exactly twenty picks after Black, this was Smith's second start after a 19-day break (injury or reset, unknown), and clearly his best performance in this, the TCU product's first season of action. *** Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 4, Fayetteville (Astros) 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats' site, details, please review: Mendez Homers and Collects Four Hits in 4-3 Victory - The Mudcats won their third straight with a crowd of 5,582 on hand in Zebulon As good a place as any to remind you to at least occasionally dig into the various Media Notes that we link to, even if at minimum the first page of each. We know we provide a ton of information within each report, and you only have so much time each day to dedicate to consuming as much as possible (and we appreciate it!), but yeah, do yourselves a favor and take that bit of advice. I'm on board with Victor, how much of a blast (literally!) is playing in front of 5,582 in Zebulon for these kids. Maryvale's attendance? Not quite. Did anybody else think like me within the hiring and service industry quagmire we're all facing, how were the Mudcats able to have enough help in place to service such a massive short-term bump in attendance? Since Mark Attanasio owns Carolina, was he behind the grill? Was David Stearns tossing peanuts? RF/CF Hendry Mendez posted an .879 OPS in 40 games as a 17-year-old in 2021. The sledding has been tougher in 64 2022 games, but Mendez raised his OPS 37 points to .665 in this one evening. What whip in this particular swing! MLB Pipeline is watching -- Admit it, you immediately overlayed this into the Milwaukee big-league dugout. *** Final: ACL Brewers Blue 4, ACL Brewers Gold 3, eight innings (scheduled for seven) Box Score / Game Log The Golden boys tied things up in the top of the final scheduled frame on catcher Jason Ollarve's two-run home run pulled to right. Ollarve only turned 18 in May, this is his second season (first stateside), and a big moment for his first professional home run. Loving all the LH-swinging catchers infused in the system. Blue then went down in order, sending the game to extra's and zombie/ghost runner territory. Bouncing back from surrendering the lead, Blue RHP Samuel Dario dominated the 8th, getting three consecutive swinging strike three's. Blue's victory came via K - intentional walk - wild pitch (runners now on 1st and 3rd) - pop out - stolen base - another intentional walk - and finally a traditional walk to end things. A bit of over-managing it seems. Three Gold batters were HBP, and one Blue batter plunked. One of those plunkees, Gold infielder Jose Caballero (playing second base Saturday), with a .366/.481/.415 line through 13 games, had to be lifted immediately. Hate to see that, especially in what is in effect, an intrasquad game. Caballero had stolen his 4th base of the season (in as many attempts) earlier in the game. Thirty-two K's in the game vs. four walks. Pitching coaches were pleased, anyway. The two most impressive pitching performances were from a couple of 24-year-olds who got late starts in affiliated ball - recent independent league signee RHP Ryan Middendorf who has been nearly perfect in his five appearances (0.55 WHIP, 0.00 ERA), and second-year Dominican signing LHP Leoni De La Cruz. As is the norm in the desert, both teams will enjoy Sunday off. *** Final: DSL Phillies Red 14, DSL Brewers #1 Squad 9 Box Score / Game Log A six-run 3rd inning saw the home team Brewers up 8-3 at that point. I'll help you with the math, it was 11-1 Phillies over the final six innings. Only one of six Uno pitchers represented well, and that was 16-year-old (17 in August) Mexican native Manuel Rodriguez. Rodriguez got two outs to strand an inherited runner upon entering in the 5th, then added two scoreless innings. Well, well, bonus baby Jhonny Severino, lookee here, 4-for-5 with a double. In his last four games, Severino is 12-for-18 with four doubles, a triple and a home run (two K's). So much for his slow start. He did commit an error at shortstop, his 11th overall on the season, his 6th while playing short (11 games there). Catcher Ludwin Tejada only turned 17 years old in May. Playing in his 7th pro game, Tejada singled four times and is now 8-for-19 (two walks, only two K's). Tejada is another LH-swinging catcher, as the Crew seems to have their fair share in the lowest levels of the chain, nice. Second baseman Angel Pereira exited the game after he grounded out in the bottom of the 7th. Simply noting this should his absence end up as extended. *** Final: DSL Tigers #1 Squad 6, DSL Brewers #2 Squad 4, seven innings as scheduled Box Score / Game Log Crew #2 led 4-3 after four, but a three-run Tiger 6th sealed the deal for the home club. It's just become a part of the box score perusal routine. Which position players left the game and if possible, determine why. Rookie infielder (played second base Saturday) Demetrio Nadal is celebrating his 18th birthday today, but hopefully he's not nursing a major injury. Nadal was hit by a pitch in the 2nd, and though he initially remained in the game, left to begin the 4th. Nadal's substitute, 16-year-old Donis Rodriguez, stole two bases after entering, though he also was picked off once. All six of the youngster's hits are singles thus far, though he's already stolen seven bases in eight attempts and has a .171/.383/.171 line after just 35 at-bats (nine walks, ten K's). Oh, the uniqueness we can find in those young teenage numbers. Like their Arizona counterparts, Sunday is Funday on the island. Wear your sunscreen! *** The only matinee on Sunday is in Appleton, as fireworks continue to be the star with a rare trio of Sunday evening games on tap. Sounds win big, Timber Rattlers score big early and hang on. Mudcats win behind a big mound performance by an exciting 19-year-old. Shuckers look forward to bigger things Saturday. Here's your theme song, Brewers farmhands, for the next three days. 'Cause baby, you're a firework Come on, show 'em what you're worth Make 'em go, "Oh, oh, oh" As you shoot across the sky Baby, you're a firework Come on, let your colors burst Make 'em go, "Oh, oh, oh" You're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe Katy Perry's complete lyrics on "Firework" are under-rated. Transaction: RH reliever Trevor Kelley was recalled to Milwaukee from Nashville - Kelley had spent the past several days with the big-league Brewers as a member of their taxi squad after his June 28th option. Perhaps you heard Craig Counsell discuss the complexities and balancing act of the taxi squad on his Friday WTMJ pre-game interview, how to keep players ready for action when clearly, they can't get into formal games. Counsell only foresees the taxi squad existing purely for Covid-related reasons. *** Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 13, Indianapolis (Pirates) 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Even Series With Two Big Innings - Ethan Small logs second consecutive quality start, earns fifth win of the year There were some striking similarities between this game and the blowout 19-2 thumping by Milwaukee Friday night over Indianapolis' parent club. The Brewers put together eight- and seven-run frames, while the Sounds twice plated five in an inning (and added a three-spot for good measure). Both clubs had their aces on the mound (Corbin Burnes, Ethan Small ). After a stretch of four starts in which he walked four, one, five and four batters, never going more than 4.2 innings, Small has back-to-back starts with one base on balls over 13 innings. Small fanned ten on June 25th, and just one Friday night. Do you see an enigma - a mystery wrapped in a riddle? Have to love those recent efforts, though! Congrats to 26-year-old RH reliever Luis Contreras on his one-inning scoreless AAA debut, though he loaded the bases with one out before working out of his jam. Easier to catch foul pop-ups with a catcher's mitt? Pedro Severino was charged with an error on a dropped foul fly while playing first base. going to be fascinating what happens there. Speaking of a mystery wrapped in a riddle, going to be fascinating what happens there. Mystery #3 - what happened to Pablo Reyes mid-game? I try to make sense of it here. Brice Turang was on base three times, but do you know what else? All 25 of Turang's hits in June were singles. In May, just three of 27 hits went for extra bases. Turang batted .260 (OBP .295) and .263 (OBP .327) respectively those months. Naturally, his lone base hit Friday was indeed a single. Meanwhile, Abraham Almonte has no such issue with XBH's. He's slugging .529. *** Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes via the Shuckers' Virtual Press Box Final: Mississippi (Braves) 4, Biloxi 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please review: Shuckers Shut Out By M-Braves - Knarr Turns in Quality Outing in Loss If you want playing time in the Brewers organization, Biloxi is where you want to be. With Sal Frelick (apparent hamstring) and Gabe Holt (unknown injury) sidelined but not on the injured list, the only two current bench players are the backup catchers, Nick Kahle and Jason Lopez. Fun for 21-year-old CF Terence Doston to be in the mix, but for someone who has yet to even see Carolina or Wisconsin, is this best for his development curve? Surely, we thought Doston's May 19th Biloxi placement was a temporary emergency assignment. Only one misfire in five starts at the AA level for LHP Brandon Knarr, he's so solid. It's a darn shame he'll always go down as "undrafted", when clearly that was only due to the 2020 five-round draft. When he hits MLB, that won't matter. If you're a subscriber, you'll read that The Athletic's Will Sammon ended up including Knarr (along with OF Joe Gray, Jr. and RHP T.J. Shook) in his proposed Andrew Benintendi trade package with his Royals' beat writer accomplice. Sammon did also hint that Milwaukee would like one additional piece, like a controllable reliever, in that deal. You know, I won't, but I could vent as to how we still don't know why OF Garrett Mitchell hasn't played since May 13th (Bally Sports had indicated an oblique injury weeks ago, but they don't include that note in their weekly prospect roundup any longer), Wait, too late on the venting... *** Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes via their all-encompassing Virtual Press Box Final: Wisconsin 12, Cedar Rapids (Twins) 9 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers' site, game details, please review: McGee Drives in Six and Miller Drives in Five for 12-9 Wisconsin Win - Timber Rattlers score eight runs in first inning and built 12-2 lead First of all, the latest Timber Rattlers jersey auction (Military Appreciation) ends Sunday, and I love the fact that big leaguer Alex Hall 's jersey is currently the highest bid-upon. I know it was included in the detailed game summary you just read (you did, right? No? I'll wait...), but the video below is mandatory viewing, if for nothing else that Ashton McGee' s huge night was awesome, yet the most entertaining moment was his face-plant/stumble trying to stretch his gapper to a triple. And do yourself a favor whenever Chris Mehring and Kyle Lobner make their Postgame Podcast available and find time for the approx. 20-minute listen. What to make of this performance by LHP Antoine Kelly ? Bizarre comes to mind. Kudos to the Cedar Rapids squad, not a single Timber Rattler was hit by a pitch after half-a-dozen Kernels were plunked in the game. Thankfully no one had to exit after their HBP. And hopefully no retaliation after a night of caring to the bruises. Awesome to have the April version of catcher Darrien Miller back, after his May slump and injury time off. Miller's OPS was .911 in the first month. Didn't bring Doug Melvin and Gord Ash to Appleton? Missed photo opp. By the way, yeah, that game was wild in that it came down to the end like that. Goodness. *** Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes (unavailable) Final: Carolina 5, Fayetteville (Astros) 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats' site, details, please review: Cruz Cruises as Mudcats Win Second Straight 5-2 - Stiven Cruz totaled a career-high six innings and struck out five in his scoreless outing Stiven Cruz another early success story. Just 20 years old out of Nicaragua, dominant in 2021 during his rookie season in the Dominican Summer League, the Brewers saw him in extended spring in Maryvale and on May 12th decided that - "no, you don't need Arizona Complex League action". Six weeks later with Carolina, Cruz has barely more walks (ten) than starts (nine). Talk about wishing our lives away, but I bet many of us can't wait to see the fruits of these lower-levels and what we're talking about in three or four years. Consider this - it's been nine games without a multi-hit effort by Jackson Chourio (double in this one), yet his OPS still sits at .938. *** Final: ACL White Sox 4, ACL Brewers Blue 2 Box Score / Game Log One bad inning, a four-run 2nd, hurt 19-year-old 2nd year Dominican RHP Arielbi Gonzalez and the club, despite five stellar innings of relief work by three of Gonzalez' teammates. Monster game for 2021 14th round pick Jace Avina - a triple shy of a cycle, but with four hits (two singles), so even better than your standard "triple shy of the cycle" comment. The recently turned 19-year-old out of a Nevada high school did not see formal action last summer. This is probably a good time to link to the scouting reports on Avina we had available on draft day 2021. So yes, add another center field prospect into the mix, .993 OPS through his first 61 AB's. Tough to win when RISP shows 0-for-7. *** Final: ACL Brewers Gold 4, ACL D-Backs Black 3, seven innings as scheduled Box Score / Game Log Second baseman Gregory Barrios scored the go-ahead run in the top of the final frame when he doubled with two out, and later crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Brewers name Minor League Players and Pitchers of the Month for June Castillo and Quero Earn Players of the Month; Jarvis and Robinson Named Pitchers of the Month Congrats to all, and 18-year-old corner outfielder Luis Castillo (DH'ing here) kicked off July in style with a two-run shot pulled to right field in the 6th. Sweet! *** Final: DSL Texas Blue 8, DSL Brewers #2 Squad 7, eleven innings Box Score / Game Log Via @damuelle, from our daily as-it-happens discussion thread on the Minor League Forum: I love the DSL Brewers2 squad giving us a reminder that they're essentially high schoolers, so expect bizarre outcomes from time to time: No hit through six innings and trailed 3-0 Scored five runs on one hit in the 7th inning for a 5-3 lead Scored two runs in the 11th inning to re-take the lead at 7-5. They still had only one hit in the entire game at this point, but then collected a 2nd (meaningless) hit later that same inning Lost 8-7 in the bottom of the 11th. Outhit 10-2 in the game, but collected eight walks and three HBPs *** Postponed: DSL Tigers Blue at DSL Brewers 1 *** All evening action at the full-season affiliate home parks Saturday, while the DSL kids wrap up their week of play and the two Maryvale teams square off in morning action. Looking forward to eventual video from Brewers Player Development on Luis (1.109 OPS through 65 at-bats -- .629 OPS in 139 at-bats in the DSL in 2021). Monday's action on the Brewers farm was limited to Arizona and the Dominican Republic, not unusual for the first day of the workweek. And while the few players who may eventually see big-league action are a half-decade or more from that MLB debut, we can dream on their exploits as we continue to chronicle each game for you. Transaction: INF Pablo Reyes optioned to AAA Nashville *** ACL Summaries compiled by @damuelle, DSL by yours truly Final: ACL Brewers Blue 7, ACL Giants Black 1, seven innings as scheduled Box Score / Game Log The Brewers in Blue improved to 4-12 with a comfortable victory over the 11-3 Giants Black team in this seven-inning game. 19-year old (turning 20 this Friday) starting RHP Alexander Vallecillo won his second straight game, giving up just one run on three hits while striking out 11 hitters and walking one. He’s now K’d 27 batters in 20 innings pitched. The team jumped out to a 5-0 second inning lead on a Jonatan Guzman two-RBI single, Jace Avina (season OPS .869) RBI double and Daniel Guilarte (season OPS .821) two-RBI single. Avina also doubled and scored on a Guilarte RBI single in the fourth inning. Dual-threat Quinton Low tripled and scored in the fifth inning to complete the scoring. The 13th round 2021 draft pick has pitched in three games (four innings – 0.00 ERA) and also played 10 games at first base (40 plate appearances - .623 OPS). Registering eight hits in 28 at-bats sounds a lot better than striking out 13 times in 28 at-bats. Both happened for the Blue squad in this game, with OF Eduarqui Fernandez victimized three times to drop his OPS to .779. DH/INF Alexander Perez stole two of Blue’s four bases in the game. 19-year old RHP Samuel Dario (3.00 ERA, 1.08 WHIP in 12 innings this year) bounced back from his last relief outing, pitching a scoreless seventh inning. Final: ACL Padres 7, ACL Brewers Gold 3, seven innings as scheduled Box Score / Game Log The loss dropped the Gold team to 9-7. Although they trailed 6-0 early and never really threatened the Padres, Gold had solid traffic throughout: 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position, ten men left-on-base. They left men on base in every inning of the seven-inning contest. Starting 20-year old RHP Domingo Mejia had his shortest outing (2 innings, 5 runs, 4 hits, 3 walks, 2 Ks), then RHP Trevor Tietz didn’t fare much better (2 innings, 2 runs, 3 hits, 2 walks, 2 Ks). However, let’s give credit to 19-year old LHP Fraudy Maldonado, who covered three scoreless innings, conceding just one hit and no walks. Normally reliant on strikeouts (38 Ks in 26 1/3 career innings entering the game), he managed to get the job done without registering any K in this one. The 2019 international signee of the Mets never got to debut with them (2020 Covid wipeout, March 2021 release), so let’s hope he continues to show them what they’re missing. Offensively, 18-year old INF Jadher Areinamo has to feel good about the first homer of his minor league career, a solo shot in the seventh inning to raise his season OPS to .851. 18-year old OF Luis Castillo reached base twice (single, walk) to keep up his average (.407 this year) and OPS (1.153). 19-year old INF Jesus Parra still has a troublesome BB/K ratio (3/14 this year; 4/35 last year), but the 2018 signing ($210k bonus) is seeing better results: .265 AVG / .333 OBP / .469 SLG. He doubled, singled and walked in a 2-for-3 effort in this game. 18-year old major 2021 signing SS Gregory Barrios picked up two singles to lift his season OPS to .685. 19-year old INF Jose Caballero went 0-for-2, but still reached base twice (walk, hit-by-pitch), so his season OPS didn’t suffer much (now .918). *** Final: DSL Brewers #1 Squad 8, DSL Cardinals 1 Box Score / Game Log Any win over the Redbirds is a reason to celebrate. Dominant win, all the better! 19-year-old 2nd-year Venezuelan RHP Kevin Briceno was wondering why he's not stateside prior to the game (our words, not his, obviously) and he simply went out and dominated over five innings - 2 H, 1 R (a home run), zero walks and nine K's. Six of the 12 Team Uno hits were doubles, including two by switch-hitting first baseman Arnys Rodriguez. A double was among the four base hits by 17-year-old bonus baby third baseman switch-hitting Jhonny Severino, a good point to turn the corner on his pro debut season. Severino handled his one ground ball chance cleanly, as he has struggled in that regard early on. Switch-hitting (catch a theme here?) center fielder Luis Lara, the 17-year-old who has been featured prominently here since Day One, doubled and singled. Here's how I look at complex league box scores. Once it's established that there is a level of really solid numbers being put up by a collection of youngsters, give me the crooked numbers on their lines. Clearly this will mean more in another month. It's a nice note if a player with a .500 OPS coming into the game gets three base hits, but give me sustained success, produce "stars" within their current level, and move on. So, for instance, Lara has been a stud in this way. Wonder how many of these switch-hitters will still be doing so in two years? Splits too small to analyze at this point, but love that the Brewers are both targeting and encouraging this. Poor St. Louis organization, not enough prospects to field two DSL teams... *** Final: DSL Phillies Red 12, DSL Brewers #2 Squad 2 Box Score / Game Log A double and two singles for 18-year-old 2nd-year Venezuelan native Brayan Oropeza. Primarily a catcher, this was his second game at first base this season. A 1.502 (!) OPS tells us he's off to a sizzling seven-game start to his season. *** It's nothing but home cooking for the Brewers' top four affiliates this week - Organizational Scoreboard including starting pitcher info, game times, MiLB TV links, and box scores Arizona Complex League Scoreboard Dominican Summer League Scoreboard Standings and sortable stat pages Current Milwaukee Brewers Organization Batting Stats and Depth Current Milwaukee Brewers Organization Pitching Stats and Depth View full article
